Livestreaming the Darkon documentary - Wednesday 8/21 7:00PM EST
Dogberry replied to Dogberry's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Bumping as a reminder. I should be getting home from work shortly before 7:00 p.m. today. If you want my commentary on the movie we can work some way out of doing that in mumble chat or something. I'll post the link around when the time comes! -
A jagged piece of blood stained coral. It's the piece that was taken from his eye after waking up shipwrecked after the calamity. He still carries it around, much like how he still carries around the memory of what he saw that night.

She isn't ugly. But I will say at in my personal view that the blockiness of their nose can make the face seem off. I like the blockiness of the nose. Eye of the beholder, and all that. Speaking of eyes, hers remind me of my wife's so A++ would bang.

Livestreaming the Darkon documentary - Wednesday 8/21 7:00PM EST

Awesome! Seeing the documentary is what got me wanting to go. It really does have a good story that it tells, with the epic rivalry between the two "main characters" and the struggles they go through in and out of the game. And as far as the way it makes the game look, it really does make the game look like a blast. The only thing that bugs me about the documentary is that I feel that some of the people in the movie weren't portrayed very fairly, but I'll elaborate on that during the stream. -
OK, I'm posting to gauge interest in anyone who may want to watch a stream of the movie Darkon. Darkon is a documentary about a LARP that has been going on since 1985 in the Baltimore/DC area. It also happens to be the LARP that I play in. I was able to score a free copy of the documentary at a Darkon event this weekend. While we're waiting for the FFXIV to launch I thought it would be amusing to stream the documentary and answer any questions and give commentary about the game and the people in the documentary. If there's any interest, I'll post a link once it gets closer to stream time. Here's a trailer! nvoTE00AdRA And no, I'm not in the movie. It was made years before I started playing.

That is just a gorgeous banner. Good luck with the site and with your FC! It looks like you're off to a good start!

Here are some lyrics I've been working on. I'll get some music written up soon enough. This one's not nearly as much of a downer as the last one. I wanted to write a song like the one Gurney Halleck sang in the Dune books. I've never found a better example of the warrior troubadour than Gurney Halleck. This one is called "Gridanian Girls." Ul'dahnese girls, so lovely in silk, And Limsa Lominsan skin fairer than milk, Each lasses' caress, I must confess, They set my heart aflutter, And when we go to Ala Mihgo, My affections stray to another, At Ishgardians fair, I may stop to stare, There must be something in the water But none of these beauties, Can ever compare, To a fine Gridanian daughter! I find them the best, By Nophica blessed With temperament, Beauty and charm! And, to me, at least, I always find peace, When held by Gridanian arms. Or so I say, It must be that way, For if I didn't, They'd bring me to harm. Oh Gridanian lasses, forgive our tresspasses, Your beds are so soft and so warm. At the conjurer's guild, My heart was filled, By a sweet sister of the Shroud, Our heads in the clouds, Our love was too loud, Oh my love was ever strong-willed. But on I did move Her father didn't approve So tears in our eyes, We made our goodbyes, And her memory I promptly removed.

OK, so I've started a bit of a music project where I wanted to write songs that would be sung in Eorzea. I'm a big fan of filk music, and the songs I like best feel like they come from a natural place in the universe they're about. For this song, I wrote it up pretty quick, actually. In a nod to Final Fantasy 7, I borrowed the chord progression from "Anxious Hearts". The song is from the perspective of someone who lost a person very dear to them in the calamity, and is haunted by traces of the memories that have been erased. I put it up on my tumblr here: http://radiofreealcyone.tumblr.com/post/57675623132/so-heres-a-very-rough-version-of-a-song-i-wrote Forgive the roughness of it, I recorded it right after I wrote it so I wouldn't forget it. Once I get the song down perfect, I will record it on better equipment. Also, forgive my mushmouth singing. I don't have a title for this one yet. If you can think of one, I'd be happy to use it.

I'm a big fan of cranberry juice. Absolutely love that stuff. I just stole my name from Shakespeare. Hope to meet you in the game, maybe we can see the adventures of Foxberry and Dogberry!

HELLO FELLOW ANIMALBERRY! HOW ARE YOU TODAY? WELCOME TO THE RPC! SORRY FOR CAPSLOCK I SAW YOUR NAME AND GOT EXCITED AND NOW I THINK I'M STUCK.

Dogberry always kind of struck me as a surfer. I kind of wonder if there's Surfing in Eorzea. Of course, whenever there's a beach, there's no surf, so maybe not?

From the sound of it, the Garlean Empire applies something similar to the BITE model. The BITE model is a "brainwashing" technique used by many different cults and high control groups. BITE stands for the different kinds of control those groups put over its members. These are: Behavioral Control Information Control Thought Control Emotional Control This is a video by Stephen Hassan, the person who created the BITE model, talking about it: Much of what has been discussed in this thread already are perfect examples of these types of control. For example, being forced to kill something once a day is a "thought stopping" activity. A repetitive ritual that must be done that requires no thought beyond the actual process of doing it. As all members are required to do it, it forms bonds with those made to do it. The bonds created act as a kind of emotional control. To even think of betraying the cause is to think of betraying your brothers. I could go on about this kind of control for quite a bit, but there's another video that explains it much better than I can. qfb5FYd83Ao Sorry for the wonky formatting, Vimeo won't just let me copy and paste the damn Url without thinking I'm trying to embed it.

There is never too much Iron Maiden! Iron Maiden is fantastic! But seriously, glad you liked Hellboy. It is a fantastic comic. I just found out that Brian Wood is writing for Conan now, so I guess I need to start reading that. I was all about DMZ when that was running. I really like Brian Wood's writing. I think he could do some great things with Conan.

What games are you playing/looking forward to?
Dogberry replied to Orlog's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I've been playing a lot of tabletop wargames lately. I actually haven't been around as much lately because I've been getting ready for an upcoming Warmachine/Hordes tournament. Playing some games to get the rust off and painting up my army. Gonna be good. Thinking maybe I might hop down to the NOVA Open Labor Day weekend. Do some open play, maybe participate in an Infinity tournament. My Infinity game is so much stronger than my Warmachine game. Also, X-Com and Organ Trail. -
What do you mean by "you people?" Just kidding! You can always roll on both. I intend to have a few alts between both.

I grok you, water brother. Welcome to the community. There's a ton of groups and people to play with across two servers, which is pretty sweet. I hope you make yourself comfortable and have a ton of fun here. Aquafraternally yours.

Dried blood, maybe? Moko Grass: Best enjoyed on the 20th day of the 4th Astral Moon while listening to your favorite bard. Bring snacks. Resinated Pipe: A well-worn pipe full of sticky black resin. Knucks: A multi-purpose tool used by pugilists, primarily as a weapon, but can double as a hammer, a grain mill, a can opener, and an antidepressant. Dad's Net: A net full of holes. Somewhere in La Noscea, an old man weeps. Yeah, I have no idea why there's so much space up top here.

If any of you are going to Otakon, hit me up. I may be at the convention or I may not because I've also got a big larp event the next weekend, but I live 20 minutes away from the convention center so even if I'm not at the con we can still meet up. Also, if you're a larper in the mid-atlantic area, come to Bellum Aeternus on August 15-18! It's Darkon's big festival, much like Dagorhir's Ragnarok event. It's going to be four days of hard fighting, lethal political role play, ren faire style shops and food, musicians, dancers, and basically a big party.

Characters in media that influence/are similar to your character!
Dogberry replied to Orlog's topic in RP Discussion
I've said in other threads that Dogberry has a similarity to Marv from the Sin City comics. He's not nearly as chauvanistic and socially ignorant as Marv is, but at his core, he is a very big man with a very violent nature and a tendency toward emotional confusion. Like Marv, Dogberry finds it easy to get emotionally invested. Dogberry also resembles Brock Sampson when his over the top machismo conflicts which some of the not-so-macho things he does. While watching The Venture Brothers, I became fascinated with the idea of a character who was basically the ideal macho man, yet would still do things like dress up in victorian garb and having a tea party just to humor someone he cared about. He either isn't aware of this clash, or if he is, he doesn't care. -
Yeah, same. Card wrote a few good books in Ender's Game, Speaker of the Dead, and even his "Alvin Maker" fantasy series. But he is a bigot. It's always important to separate the artist from the work, but not let the work excuse the artist. H.P. Lovecraft was apallingly racist even during his time. This doesn't mean it's not OK to enjoy "The Call of Cthulhu", but you can't give him a pass on his racism just because he wrote a cool story.
-
Hello, Ender. I am a big fan of your tactics in the battle room and your work on the Third Invasion. I'm sure you get that all the time. Sorry, I just had to. Welcome to the game!

Dogberry has a need to constantly keep busy. In idle moments he finds himself becoming hypervigilant and jumpy. He begins pacing, he gets grumpy or paranoid, and eventually finds himself in trouble when he becomes a danger to himself or others. To combat this, Dogberry has three ways of making sure he's constantly busy. First, he trains. As a pugilist, he needs to be in peak physical condition. Whether he's out in the field, beating up woodland creatures, or punching practice dummies, he makes sure to at least get a good amount of training in. Second, he works. If not taking a job from Blue Skies, he's looking for something to do. That might mean finding a boxing match or pit to fight in. It might mean taking on odd jobs for random people. If there's nothing, he goes back to Eastern La Noscea to help his father repair nets and mend sails. His father is getting older and is starting to lose his sight and a bit of manual dexterity. Dogberry will go over and help him earn a little extra money. Third, if he's tired from training and worn out from work, is that old stand by intoxication. Alcohol and moko grass at least takes his mind off the fact that he is idle. It is not the healthiest or most respectable or crutches, but it is effective. He'll find himself at a bar, buzzed on moko grass and nursing a bottle of whiskey to stave off the tide of panic that rushes over him whenever he has time to himself.
-
Good question! Dogberry's bag usually contains at least three small items. The first is a small pipe, the second is a leather pouch containing moko grass and some matches, and the third is a piece of coral. As he doesn't have much gil, and doesn't think anyone is likely to rob him, he usually has all of his gil, which is usually less then a thousand. From there it's full of whatever odds and ends he finds useful at the time. Rations and water if he's on a long trek, or stuff he can sell, or occasionally bricks when he wants a hard workout.
