The two Miqo'te tribes, from my understanding, basically suffer from the same problem - there are more females than males. They just handle the situation differently. With Keepers, they have developed into a matriarchal society where the females hold most of the power. Males are raised, and then leave to wander about between the other Clans to aid in producing offspring. I would assume they'd have to have some level of self-sufficiency during their wandering, but if they're also tasked to do similar chores when they're staying with a Clan I'm not so certain. Also, the duration for which they stay I'm also not too knowledgeable on - maybe it depends on the Clan? They could be allowed to stay for a while, or just enough to do their duty and then move on? With Seekers, the lack of males has taken a different tack - they seek to ensure that only the strongest of the males produces offspring, much like lions in the Savannah. The current head of the the tribe is, of course, the Nuhn and all other males are Tias. While I believe - again, like lions - the females do the majority of the hunting, I don't think there's any particular limit on what Tias can do beyond "don't mate." A Tia with enough leadership skill could very well be a Nuhn's advisor and effectively lead the tribe while the Nuhn performs his duties... unless said Tia uses that advantage to seek to become Nuhn himself. And finally, for the eye thing... I think Keepers may have a light sensitivity such that they don't like really bright lights, but I don't think it's anywhere near a Drow's. You're comparing a race that just frequently acts in the night time to a race that lives so deep underground that they never see the sun. And as for Seekers, unless those eyes of theirs can do what cats do, I would figure the safest thing to assume is that they have the same level of night-vision as a Hyur. Just as an aside, these all seem like pretty solid concepts. Heck, I think someone a while back had an idea for a seafaring Seeker tribe that looked pretty interesting. Don't know if that actually manifested, but I thought it relevant... especially if it did get off the ground, since that could mean a potential RP group for Idea 1. As for Idea 2, which I quoted, I've actually seen a fair number of PC Nuhns. Though how many of them actually run with the title as being in that role for their tribe and have an actual PC group around them... and how many are just taking the name for the bragging rights, I'm not sure. I've seen a lot of Nuhns who seem to have a lot of time on their hands, considering the time they hang around the Quicksand and other bars. Though, to be fair, bringing together a whole group of RPers for a Seeker tribe is a bit of a daunting task. I had an idea for one a while back that never really manifested, and I can recall only one tribe that was actually decently populated with RPers and that was back in the more active hayday of the RPC. Most - from what I've seen, anyway - seem to play those who have moved away from their tribal life. Though, again, that's just what I've seen and I haven't really been keeping tabs on such things.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I don't even slot it on my bar. It's like... what's the default set to USE for Healer Role abilities? You have five slots and, like, six good abilities. Personally, I'm running dangeresque without Esuna (which is only a problem in certain cases, really). So Protect, Largesse, Lucid Dreaming, Eye for an Eye, and Swiftcast. Though, I AM a SCH, so if I couldn't spread Eye, I'd probably swap that for Esuna just for those few situations where I need to remove a Doom or a poison effect or something. But that's six abilities jockeying for a position for doing healer-y things even before I look at improving my damage. ... Like, if they merged Cleric Stance and Largesse into a single ability, that might be nice. But they you'd have to figure out whether you're going to use it for that big heal or to eke out some more damage. And, given our horror stories here... our PuG healers will either use it solely for DPS, just healing so they can go back to dancing that much sooner, or not at all. -

That tends to be how it goes, unfortunately. Despite how bad some PuG tales are, you usually zone in expecting things to go all right. So you might not notice some things right away unless it's noticeably impacting your experience. Heck, sometimes I've forgotten to put on Shield Oath due to the level adjustment but I'm spamming my enmity moves enough that I'm maintaining aggro so I don't notice it until someone tells me a few pulls in. That's just a low key example of it, but stuff like healers ONLY healing or DPS being problematic (such as continuing to single-DPS in big groups or, almost at the opposite end, spamming AoE stuff with single and two-mob pulls) aren't always noticeable right away. Or DPS/Healers in bad or broken gear - it's far more noticeable on tanks since they'll be horrendously squishy (though that could also be assumed to them just not using their cooldowns). I've had experiences with all of them in some shape or form, and I usually don't really notice it right away. Too wrapped up in my own role a lot of the time. -
[The Dollhouse] Free Sketches & Chibis <Accepting Requests>

Ooo! Um, well, if you're willing to try drawing a Lalafell, I have a dorky friendly little one that I just made some new glamours for! Chachanji Gegenji ... And I'm only now realizing I only have smaller screenshots available of his normal working outfit. Derp. Can't show it on-model, but he's supposed to be a little burlier than your average Lalafell. Life as a smith and all that, so he's got bulkier arms and some chest definition and all that. Also freckles, which tend not to show up in screenshots unless I pull in real close-like. Or someone just takes a nicer screenshot like Jancis did at one point: So, um... yeah! Feel free to go with any of his outfits you like. -

can I ask if you told that healer to his or her face what you just wrote in here ? On the last boss? I suppose after that would be the best time for it if they didn't immediately gun it to the exit. Or you didn't yourself just to be away from the guy and move on with life. I could see either happening, really. ... I have seen this done myself, by the by. It's certainly frustrating that a healer would rather dance than, you know, put in a little more effort. -
Well, you also have to keep in mind that the in-game time goes WAY faster than our own. Just during the Grindstone, if we went by the in-game day/night cycle, three/four hours for us was "technically" a good couple days in Eorzean-time. Not that we stick to that, of course, or we wouldn't have time for anything! But yeah, if you just watch how fast time ticks by switching to Eorzean Time... it might take a day for a Chocobo to say, run from Ul'dah to Horizon. The math probably doesn't perfectly check out (I doubt that much thought was put into it), but it does mean Eorzea's probably a lot bigger than you're giving it credit for.

I think I've seen a few people run with that idea, especially in magic tournaments around the time MCH came out. So, I think you should be fine with that.

How is my name not Lore Abiding? I'm tired of being told it isn't.
Gegenji replied to Mother's topic in Character Workshop
That's not what that word means. A xaela named after a ooc fox spirit is a pretty oocly idealised thing, if you ask me. Which is the definition of a Mary sue. But these are all just opinions, not facts. Conversely, I think naming someone after someone famous is just... normal. As I think it was mentioned earlier, wouldn't we all be Mary Sues if we have names from the bible? All your Joshuas and Johns and (literal) Marys are "Mary Sues" in this case. I lean towards Mary Sue-ism being less about the name of the character and more about the character itself in its abilities and forced importance onto the scene they are in. What their name is? Not so much. It could be an indicator of a Sue (comedic example: Maximum Edgelord McDeathmaster), but not always. -
I think saying you're the one who handled Edda or the Lich or what-have-you might be stepping on some toes for some people (That's WoL stuff! Or something.)... but you could probably make the delves and stuff IC, or at least use the dungeons as set dressing for something else with a bit of imagination. In fact, PotD might be really good for something like that since you can pretty easily go in just by yourself or a pre-made/undersized party - which is a tack you can take with doing "IC" dungeon runs for similar purposes. The only issue might be, like with doing IC dungeon runs, the dungeon timer. Work around that, and I'm sure you could do plenty of fun stuff for RP with PotD.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Is it a myth? Or is it no longer a truth now, with Stormblood changing things up? And, as such, the fact that DRG and MNK can possibly AoE effectively now hasn't really cottoned on with the general populace? They could certainly be acting on previous understandings on how things worked, and I do recall MNK and DRG not being too great on the sustained AoE during the ARR/HW periods. And, again, just because DPS has AoE options doesn't mean they'll use them. Just like my DRK who refused to use Unleash that I mentioned earlier, you can just as easily have... say... a SAM and BRD as your two DPS and they're almost exclusively single-targeting. Or they could just be bad - like the SAM I had in my Expert yesterday that I could've sworn was purposely standing on top of me to try and get me killed with AoE effects (though that was more issue with the second and final bosses of Ala Mhigo) and only ever seemed to use the Two-Sen AoE move and not the other four at his disposal. Or you could have a healer that's more focused on DPSing than healing - referencing my Haukke Manor complaint from earlier. Sure, that happened in Leveling, but it's still a thing that can happen at any level of play. You don't know what you're going to get in a roulette, so expecting people who keep pace with you is a nice idea... but it never hurts to be cautious. And even then, some people will surprise you. Heck, I had a Omega V4.0 with a DRK offtank on Tuesday who refused to avoid any of the big hits, stood in the middle of the room for Decisive Battle on purpose and hit Living Death, burned the LB3 on a tank LB for no reason, and the entire time was complaining about not getting heals. The various stories of various PuGs that inspired me to create this Vent Tent to begin with is proof enough that - while hopefully the rarity as opposed to the norm - you're going to run into people in roulettes who are problematic. As a tank, I'd rather err on the side of caution and do smaller pulls until either I can gauge the skill of my team or I get the okay from, like, the healer that I can make bigger pulls. Of course, if it looks like everyone can manage and the tank is STILL doing itty-bitty pulls? Then I'd certainly be annoyed too. Still, even dismissing the idea of the Potential Bads you could end up with... it's possible that you just have players who aren't comfortable yet making big pulls. Stormblood's been out for all of, what, a month? Maybe they're not geared enough yet (either in actuality or in their mind) to tank/heal/whatever for the larger pulls. Maybe they don't know the dungeons well enough yet to have figured out how many pulls in you can go. I remember one of my first runs of TotF, we had a tank get a little too ambitious after the first boss and pulled the next two packs - the second pack including a bear and a swarm of small enemies, and he died before the healer could get a heal off. I'm sure as time passes, and people both get more familiar with the dungeons and more gear from them, that people will do bigger pulls. Even now, I usually see the default "first pull" for Ala Mhigo being the first two packs - only newcomers to the instance just pull the first one. And pulling to the barriers in the first legs of TotF seems to be pretty commonplace too. And, honestly, just speaking from personal preference... I'd kinda prefer baby pulls than over-aggressive tanks (and, as mentioned before, DPS) pulling too much and getting everyone killed. Especially if said individuals throw a fit afterward because their eyes were bigger than their iLevels (I'm so witty :bomb: ). -
Aye, don't think that's too far fetched from what I've read so far. It just seems to me a bit far-fetched to find super detailed tomes just casually laying around for the grabbing. I dunno... :tonberry:
-
To be fair, the texts you're finding are not in super great condition. Of course, the one you need just so happens to have enough of it readable to solve the problem at hand, so... *shrug?*
-
Mmm. Not so much. There's texts apparently that describe Red Magic out there. You go looking around some ruins in Gyr Abania for some texts during one of the 60+ RDM quests.
-
Seems legit. ... Though, that said, if one wanted to be a bit cartoony they could have the mask itself be expressive enough for the emotions. Larger eye holes for scared, tears pouring out of it for sobbing, that sort of thing.
-
They are not. White Magic was developed by the Amdapor. During the time of the War of the Magi, Conjury didn't exist. Conjury was taught to the Gelmorrans by the Moogles. The only "relationship" between the two is that they both draw from ambient aether and they both can be used to heal. But they were developed/discovered independently. Neither falls under the "school" of the other. Ah, right right right. I forgot that bit. Though, that said, does that fact alone really mean they couldn't be connected? I mean, maybe the Moogles were taught Succor (or a weaker version of it) and what got effectively telephoned to the Gelmorrans (either because the Moogles were taught something weaker, they forgot details over the ages, or just wouldn't/couldn't provide a 100% transfer of knowledge) is what became known as Conjury? Obviously, that's just personal musings and the reason why CNJ progresses so effortlessly into WHM (and uses all the same spell names and such) could just be a mechanical constraint of the game but... it makes one wonder, you know? ... Even if it's kind of moving off-topic. Though, that said... if I'm remembering the conversations from the RDM questline correctly... knowledge of Conjury is still apparently a good enough "substitute" to having access to Succor if they're not actually somehow related to one another. Otherwise, why would the mentor suggest one be skilled in an unrelated magic field? Unless the Red Mages adopted Conjury into the development of their Red Magic at some point.
-
Ah! I remember that quest-line! I actually feel kinda dumb for having it slip my mind since it's actually part of a huge side quest chain... and gets mentioned again offhand at the end of another quest. (Was that guy a descendant of that pairing too, or just part of the family? Because he looks pretty normal...) ... Though, I don't recall the bit about someone describing the offspring. But that could just be me forgetting some of the minor details.
-
... Really? They're not related at all? I could've sworn they were. And anyway, the RDM questline actually states one needs skill in Thaumaturgy and Conjury. I forget how many times, but I'm fairly certain it gets mentioned at the end of the level 70 capper quest where... So thaumaturgic and conjury...ic knowledge - and maintaining balance between them - is required to succeed as a RDM.

I don't quite remember where I heard this or if it was documented somewhere or just pure fanon... but what I recall hearing is that the "base" race of the crossbreed is that of the mother, with some traits inherited from the father's side. So a M Roe/F Elezen offspring would look mostly like an Elezen, except possibly more stocky and/or having some Roegadyn features. And, vice versa, a M Elezen/F Roe child would be mostly Roe but possibly ganglier and/or having features like a longer neck or slightly pointed ears. Something to that effect, anyway. 2nd person who's said this so I'm starting to believe it's a real thing. Then the question is just how much of something someone gets. If it's a male miqo'te and a female au ra.... They're an Au ra with miqo'te ears?... or tail?... or... ._. I don't really know how to go about this lol. Most other races get away with the ear thing or something but in situations like this, I wonder what to do. Yeah, I think when you add Miqo'te and Au Ra to the mix is when things start becoming more questionable. From my point of view? If the mother is an Au Ra, they are going to have horns and scales... with the Miqo'te traits that get past along being lesser things. Their eyes or their fangs, maybe facial markings. Perhaps, to the extreme, maybe they DO have a light layer of fuzz on their tails and/or horns. Conversely, a Miqo'te mother would mean mostly Miqo'te features. Maybe they get the limbal rings? Maybe their ears and tails are less furry, possibly with some scaling here and there? Really, I think the real answer is that we won't really know unless SE provides a child of such a union. Remember, the only crossbreeds we've seen so far have been Elezen/Hyur and - if I recall correctly - a crossing of the two clans of Miqo'te. We haven't seen several of the potential combinations. Miqo'te crossed with anything other than another Miqo'te, Au Ra with anything else, and the ever mind-bending idea of a Lalafell and a Roe. So all we're left with is personal guesswork on how the genetics would work out, perhaps tempered somewhat by what we know of actual genetics.
-
Just a minor nitpick, but it's the other way around. Black Magic is an extension - a technique - to allow Thaumaturges to reach greater levels of power. A Thaumaturge's ability is limited by their own personal aether - as seen in the THM questline. Shatotto - who I believe suffered from a low aetheric well also, but am not certain - developed the technique to instead draw power from the planet instead of being forced to be limited to one's own... well, aetheric limits. From this came the ability to cast bigger and more potent magicks, to call down the stars and move mountains. And thus Mhachi was able to wield a great arcane power, without really caring about how it would affect the planet. The Elementals, to combat this, bequeathed Succor on the nation of Amdapor. Or those bequeathed the power became the nation of Amdapor, I don't exactly remember if the order of operations for this was ever explicitly stated. Conjury already drew power from the planet, but in small amounts and you were taught to return what you took. Succor, however, much like Black Magic (and thus, in my mind, is - again - a technique) draws far more aether to power their own greater spells. ... Though, do we know if Conjury came first? One could potentially argue that Conjury could have come afterward. A watered down version of White Magic, and the idea of "returning what you take" becoming part of the process specifically to prevent a repeat of the past? Might be worth digging into. ANYWAY, Black and White clash... along with a third party that still uses their own personal aether, but also brings to the fore more tactical prowess rather than just raw aetheric power: Nym. This conflict is later known as the War of the Magi, and the amount of aether being drawn by Mhach and Amdapor risks killing the planet. In an attempt to end this, the Elementals intervene once more and in a much more final fashion - they flood the world. ... and a small group of refugees from both sides end up in the lands of Gyr Abania (via a ship you can actually visit IG)... and rightly decide that they probably shouldn't use the White and Black techniques anymore. Thus Red Magic is developed and we have the Red Mages we know and love today.

Funny thing is... just having a few other words in and of itself doesn't mean it's a whole new language. Different dialects of the same language could use different terms. See the British English's "rubber" for "eraser." These could also extend to slang terms for various occupations as well. Next up, currency. Are we sure that koban and gil are the same thing and not just different currencies for the different locations? After all, we have the American dollar versus the English pound - to again make that comparison. Maybe the reason everything in Othard seems so pricey is because the gil is weak over there compared to the koban! And, as a third musing point: kami and other religious terms. Those, again, could be specific to that religion and not be a local language thing. Allah is still Allah to Muslims no matter where they are, and the Jewish faith has rabbis instead of priests. A few unique phrases and terms does not a new language make. The wall scrolls and the like with the completely different language, however, are stronger suggestions that there might be another language at play. Even if it's fallen into disuse and it's merely certain terms have just held on into the modern Hingan/Doman dialect of the "common" spoken language.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
To be fair, "baby pulls" is going to be heavily dependent on what your DPS looks like and how confident you are in your healer to keep you up. If you don't have good AoE damage, big pulls can be time-consuming... and MP-consuming for your healer. Or you could just drop due to either the healer not being able to keep you up or, since we're talking Vent-Tent material, they're too focused on DPS. Which is, oddly enough, a topic that came up recently in an LS chat for me. Super-DPS-focused healers. The launching point was someone complaining about getting into a PotD with two healers who apparently would rather die doing their mad deepz rather than fling around a single heal. And, on the same day, I had a... mildly troubling healing in my Leveling roulette in Haukke Manor (NM). To be fair, we got through the whole thing just fine without any deaths. However, there was many a time where I was worried (as PLD tank) about how low my HP was dipping. Meanwhile our WHM is spamming their attack spells as I consistently drop to quarter and lower health on trash pulls - which quickly meant I started pulling smaller groups since I was fairly certain I was getting more "heals" via my base HP regen out of combat than I was getting from our healer. Who seemed deadset that the "rushdown" strategy would work better, but also apparently didn't seem to see the need to top me off after battles either. ... Really, the only times I think I actually saw her healing was during the bosses where she HAD to or I'd die... and one accidental big pull past the first boss when one of our DPS jumped over the railing rather than go around with me and I had to grab and tank both packs. We had a THM and a BLM as our DPS, so it wasn't really a problem... but, again it was more a concern that if I pulled big my super-aggro healer wouldn't heal me. So... yeah. Long story short, there can be multiple reasons why someone might do "baby pulls." Hopefully, though, if you ask the tank to do big pulls... they will oblige. Though, I personally would be more obliging to the healer saying "pull big" rather than the DPS. And I especially don't like when DPS decide to "help" with said pulls by running ahead and grabbing the next pack "for you" - which is what our SAM decided to do in my Leveling roulette of Shisui of the Violet Tides yesterday. :dazed: -
The original "go-to" server for RP on FFXIV was Balmung, but it's currently on lock-down because it's stuffed to capacity. However, there are several other servers that have their own RP communities! Most notably are Mateus and Omega (the latter being an EU server, so if you're EU, that's probably going to be your go-to!), but there are several other communities on servers like Jenova and Faerie! Checking the Free Company and Linkshell Halls in the Resources section of the forums should give you a good starting point, but the RPC isn't the be-all, end-all for FFXIV RP, so there could be plenty of other RP groups that just have not registered and/or advertised their presence here.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Oh, just to add a bit of venting of my own to this thread... I think I came across my first obviously bad instance of someone who had used a jump potion. Was doing 50/60 Roulette on RDM, and got the original Wanderer's Palace. Yay! AoE central with me being able to spam my Doublecast Scatters! ... Or so I thought. Before we even pull, the DRK is barking some strange orders ("Don't run ahead." "Let me pull.") and those sorts of things. We just tell him to pull big because we had a good AoE group and he, thankfully, does so. ... but he doesn't use Unleash. At all. He continues to try and single-target damage when he has groups of 6+ enemies sitting on him. Or, sitting on him until anyone else does anything else to generate even the slightest bit of threat. I don't remember how the conversations that followed went exactly (this was last week or so and I didn't bother committing it to memory), but... I vaguely remember how it went. At some point - a couple pulls in or so - I throw something out akin to "Hey tank, you have an AoE aggro move. Please use it." I forget if he ignores me at first or if he responded right away, but at some point he counters that he's level 60 and he got dropped to 50. Which... shouldn't matter, right? DRK "gets" Unleash at level... 16-ish? He should have it. So by the first boss we (the other members of the group get in on this too at some point) are in this big debate with the guy. Use Unleash; "I don't have yet." Yes you do it's level 16, "DRK got changed with SB." No, I'm both looking at a wiki and I'm talking with a friend on DRK and you should still have it. Back and forth until we finally get him to realize we're not talking about his level 54 AoE health drain move, but Unleash... which we had been calling Unleash the whole time. The healer literally copies and pastes the description for Unleash from a wiki or something and the guy finally says "Oh, yeah. I have that. Sorry, I thought you meant something else." Fortunately, once he "realizes" he has Unleash and starts using it, the rest of the run goes... all right. Minus his obvious lack of understanding how the dungeon works even though there was no new player bonus and he was apparently a level 60 DRK. Still, the rest of us knew what we were doing and we clear it out well enough and I duck on out. Not the biggest problem in the world, but it irked me that the guy fought with us tooth and nail about whether or not he had an ability that DRK "has" at level 16, and going so far as to proclaim that the SB expansion moved it to such a high level that he didn't have access to it anymore. :dazed: -

To be fair, it's almost stupidly easy to just toss out a Verraise as your Dualcast spell. I've actually raised both my tank and my healer in a 4 man run gone bad by Dualcasting the first Verraise and Swiftcasting the second. Plus, RDM is insanely MP efficient so you're never really hurting for MP. The only thing you might be missing in tossing out the Verraise is another Verstone or Verfire Ready proc. Oh no.
