How is my name not Lore Abiding? I'm tired of being told it isn't.
Gegenji replied to Mother's topic in Character Workshop
As a bit of an extra nail in the coffin... I wonder if George Washington Carver ever got picked on or ignored for having the full name of a president in his name. And, to a more of an extreme sense... man, if we couldn't name people after famous entities, think of all the names from the Bible we couldn't use. Jacob, David, Joshua, Peter, Mary... That said, I do agree with Six on the point that some names - if of high enough profile and used in their entirety - will likely get you some odd looks. Naruto might work, but Naruto Uzumaki might get people wary. Abraham or Lincoln might work on their own, but combined... not so much. I think the issue would also be magnified if the name doesn't fit the naming schemes of the race or doesn't have a good explanation for why they're named like that. Like a green-skinned Sea Wolf who is just named Bruce Banner. In the OP's case, it's a name that fits the naming scheme just fine. Of course, I might be a bit biased on the matter considering my Raen's (first) name is taken from a fighting game and I've yet to see any issues with it. -
I was actually surprised at how effective it was. I honestly expected the queues to be about back to "normal" - aka the 3+ hour wait - by the time I got home (around 5pm EST), or at least have gotten back to that sort of timer by 8pm-ish. Finding out that it dropped to a little over an hour at most even at the peak times is really good to know! ... And makes me all the more annoyed at the AFK-dodgers who caused it to get like that in the first place.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
In the meta-view, SCH is the "weakest" healer. Also, with SB, SCH lost three DoTs (Bio, Miasma II, and Aero - though the last one couldn't be spread to other targets) and access to Stoneskin. So a lot of their "passive" damage potential was lost, and AST can bubble basically as good as they can and they have their cards to further bolster the party along with their heals. ... Something to that effect, anyway. -
Tried, hit a "wall" of 26 people. Then I was in.
-
By a primal, I'd wager. I'd be tempted to try this if I had any artistic talent.
-
Only one way to find out! I'll be home in two-ish hours as well. We can build a camp fire and sing songs together while we wait. I have a balcony. Terrible idea, I'm a horrible singer.
-
I won't be home for another two hours. I wonder if it'll be back to "normal" by then.
-
... That was a concern? I was under the impression that the time of the disconnect would be unique to the datacenter and the part of the globe it's covering.
-
It's funny, the noon PDT time-frame falls pretty neatly into the guesstimate range I had when discussing the timing for the forced disconnect. The initial concern was interrupting RP events and the like, obviously, but I ultimately assumed that the best time for SE to do this thing would be in the "noon to early afternoon" time window. With the cutoff being around 4pm at the latest (EST preferably, since I'm EST, of course). The reasoning for it was pretty simple. The further you get into the evening, the more likely you're going to be dealing with people who are... y'know, actually playing as opposed to idling. The kids are home from school and the adults are home from work - at least, if you consider the normal school and work schedules (your 9-5s and whatnot). It kinda sucks for the people with alternative work schedules (graveyard shifts and the like), but then again... they're most likely to actually be playing and can just reconnect afterward. Thus, it should hopefully catch most of the idlers who set things up before going to class or work. As mentioned, it won't keep them from coming right back and doing it when they're home... but I guess it's a start?
-
Also, I've been thinking. What will this mass-logoff actually accomplish? If it's announced and the people are anywhere near or around where they can log back in... that just means there's going to be a "new wards added"-esque stampede as soon as the servers go live again. So there's likely to be just as huge of a queue then as everyone tries to flood their way in. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who loads up the connection fast enough to get in... but how long before it's back to being stuffed to capacity again?
-
The idea isn't just to add more Worlds/servers. It's to split the existing ones into new data centers like they did with the US/EU one. I mean, maybe they would add a couple new Worlds if there's some sort of "minimum number of Worlds" requirement for a data center... but the general idea is that there'd be a whole new data center being used for not only those worlds, but for their cross-server instances and the like. And a separate "staging server" for people waiting to get loaded onto their Worlds. If my understanding of how it all works is right (it very likely might not be, Unnamed will probably swoop in and point in all the things I've got wrong here at some point or another)... then not only would that help the queues to login, but it'd also help the dungeon queues. Stop the situations like what I saw on... Sunday? Where a near instant to five minute queue for Palace of the Dead for a single character turned into a 30+ minute wait and at least a 5 minute wait for a full four-man team. There are already two NA data centers - Aether and Primal. ... A third one then. Aether, Primal, and... I dunno. Eikon? Something. Or at least see how feasible it would be to transfer a heftier World from one to the other. Move Balmung/Gilgamesh to Primal or something. Just so the super-bloat isn't all confined on one data center.
-
Kind of hijacking this a little, but that Envoy group might be a good fit for my little refugee Raen toymaker too! That said, Moku could potentially bump into and interact with Rae (to keep things on topic!). If not during the escape, then while they were being shuffled around as the Eorzeans tried to figure out what to do with them. I personally plan on having Moku's "base of operations" be up at Revenant's Toll, since that's where a majority of the refugees ended up, but he's currently in Thanalan while I get him up to speed... so things could still work out? ... Also, it should be noted that the Garleans have occupied Doma for a good twenty years now, and the MSQ as far as I can tell doesn't show any issue with the Domans communicating with their Eorzean visitors. Just a warning in case people bring that up.
-
... Maybe they'll have to add more data centers? And straight up relocate some of the heftier Worlds onto them? Like, we have the Aether data center for all of the US, right? Maybe we need to have one for East Coast and one for West Coast with, like... Balmung on one, Gilgamesh on the other, and divvying up the rest of the Worlds between them for an even split of population? I dunno.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
That's my usual approach to it. Not only is it usually the vocal minority making a fuss, it's easily ignored or blocked by turning off /shout chat. Beyond that, there's also a very low likelihood I'll even end up bumping into or RPing with these people anyway... and even if I do it's not like I'm going to openly announce "OHEY MY MAIN'S ON BALMUNG" or "I GOTTA ALT ON MATEUS." That sort of stuff will likely only come up if we hit it off and want to schedule another meeting for RP. ... And if finding out the fact that I have characters on one, the other, or both is enough to set them off, then I might not really want that next RP interaction anyway. -
One can only hope that this is more of a temporary fix and they'll come down the pipe later with a patch or something that blocks the AFK evasion methods. I mean, they're pretty well-known, right? At least, the crafting-lock one is pretty obvious if you look around - people all over all somehow in the middle of crafting with that red chair...

Oh, that's a bug? Huh, I had the same thing happen on both my characters. Just knew where to look the second time. Thought it was intentional for some reason. -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Oh, I don't have a negative view on Mateus at all and was fairly certain it was - as you said - a vocal minority situation. I tend to turn off shout-chat anyway just because there's been very little there that has been worth leaving it on for, especially in the cities. This was just a new one that just had me shaking my head a little. ... And my view on avoiding the Us vs. Them applies to both sides of the table. Just as I don't like seeing people dig at Balmung on Mateus, so too should Balmung not get all up in arms about Mateus. Both are offering wonderful RP opportunities and having them both isn't somehow "hurting" either side at all, despite what people might think. I'm looking forward to hunting for some RP on Mateus once I get my little toymaker up to speed. Though I suppose the biggest "issue" will be juggling characters cross-server. I might have to go even more on the "scheduled RP times" for the guy, but I'm willing to see how it plays out. -

Fair enough! Speaking of current gripes, then. And it's actually not about dungeons or content or anything like that. I recently made my alt on Mateus to have it to RP there and to see for myself how insane the XP bonus is (it's redonk, if you're curious). As such, I had /shout chat turned on in Ul'dah... and for almost all my time in that city I was hearing people complain about Balmung and how terrible and toxic and horrible it is (and full of nothing but ERP and drama, apparently). I mean, really guys. You're going to find terrible people everywhere, on any server and in any decently sized group of people in general. Let's not make it an Us vs. Them situation like what happened with Gilgamesh. We're all RPers, we all are here to have fun and goof around with our pretend-times on the Interwebs. Let's not introduce even more drama by drawing unnecessary lines in the sand. -

As a SCH, I've always been of the mind of having the tank pull as much as they're comfortable with. Doubly so in SB since they seem a bit extra squishy. But it also heavily requires said tank to be aware of how much they can pull. While I tend to not pull more things, I have seen tanks who pull far too much. Or pull a decent amount and refuse to use their defensive cooldowns. Or surprise me with a huge pull (which also tends to happen when I'm out of Aetherflow stacks) and so they die because I couldn't respond in time to the sudden increased influx of damage. ... So yeah, you can find problem folk across all roles. And it's never fun to meet any of them. -
discussion What it Means to be a Half Breed
Gegenji replied to SapphireSkylines's topic in Lore Discussion
If it helps, there's actually a decently long-standing issue with Chachan's parents regarding the fact he's dating a non-Lalafell and, to a lesser extent, someone not of Doma. The latter isn't as big of a sticking point since his mother is from Ul'dah... but it's definitely been an interesting series of RP trying to "convince" the stubborn old smith to accept the relationship. ... It's also been a bit of work on my end since I'm the one RPing the entire family and their interactions. Quite rewarding, though, and makes for good story. And vaguely relevant to the topic at hand because, if they have kids... they'll be Lalaqo'te or whatever the term for them is. -
Once you reach lvl60 in certain class, the buff will switch off for that particular class but will automatically switch on for any other class under lvl60. ... My god. Just think, the Armory bonus is another +100% XP up to level 60. Add the +10% XP from Heat of Battle II to the formula as well for maximum XP gainage and... 100%+((100%+80%+10%+3%)x2) = +486% XP per kill. Let that sink in. Once you get one combat class high enough to start giving an Armory bonus, your subsequent combat classes are effectively getting five times normal XP per kill. You could probably just, like... dungeon or FATE farm and rake in the levels. EDIT: Granted, that's only up to level 25 and if you have all the +XP equipment. But even if you had ONLY the armory bonus (which lasts to 60, same as the server XP doubler, mind you)... that's still triple experience per kill. Not too shabby. EDIT 2: Also also, if we want to go full math-splosion here, we can also include the XP training manual (+15% XP) and rested bonus (+50%) for another 65 turned 130% XP bonus. So, yeah. If you have everything going you're only getting +616% XP a kill. Only.
-
I just never realized how much it was boosting. A straight up doubler on ALL your XP, including any other bonuses you have? That's crazy, no matter how much or little of the +XP equipment you have. ... Do we have any confirmation if it goes away once you hit 60 or collectively have gained 60 levels or whatever? Because if it sticks around while you still have stuff under 60, then you might be able to get the Armory bonus on top of everything else. :dazed:

So, I made my Mateus alt and MY GOD. I would already get +80% XP just from equipment: the Friendship Circlet (from Recruit-a-Friend, +20% XP for classes up to 25), the Ala Mhigo Earring (Preorder bonus for Stormblood, +30% XP for classes up to 50), and the Brand-New Ring (Hall of the Novice, +30% XP for classes up to 30)... But the XP bonus for the chosen servers seems to be just a flat doubler for XP. Quests give +100% and all my equipment (and food) seems to have double the XP bonus. So... yeah. 100%+((80%+3%)x2) = +266% XP for each mob kill. I've only just cleared Satasha and my alt is level 24. And that's after I finally broke my habit of doing all the side quests at around the time I started city-hopping for the MSQ. I made him at around 6pm, went to bed around 11pm. So... 5 levels an hour on average. AND I'm not even in an FC yet to get the bonus for killing stuff that they can give you or any rested or combo-chain XP. I know it'll taper off as I hit the markers where I can't use some of my +XP equipment (25 loses the hat, 30 the ring... so down 50% there...), but I'll still be getting... what... +166% up to level 50? It's pretty ridiculous, frankly. Seriously, if you're concerned about having to level up an alt on Mateus or the other servers on the "PLEASE GO HERE" list... don't be. I'm honestly curious to see if I can have him to 60 before the week's end.

A bit of a double-post, but I'm planning on having Moku make his steps into the world of Hydaelyn after work today. I just wanted to thank everyone who gave the thread a look-see and provided input and suggestions on him! Once I get him situated, I'll probably make a Making Connections thread for him to see if I can't get the RP ball rolling. As well as perhaps find him a FC. So, if any of you Mateus players are interested in my toymaker, please look forward to the thread! Thanks again, guys, and feel free to throw out any other ideas and feedback here should you think of something.
