I think it's more about fish not being an efficient means for earning Gil compared to other avenues, in part from not using them for 'essential' crafting recipes. I'm pretty sure it's been indicated that they're not pursuing a total removal of them from any practical purpose at all, just that you won't find you need crafting materials exclusive to Fishing for the one and only best of the best doohickey.

Ala Mhigo was famed for several things; the Monk Job has its roots there, for example. The sword is just that, a sword. It doesn't mean that everyone in Ala Mhigo always used a sword. Besides, looks like a greatsword to me.... Did you know that Yoshi-P has indicated the liberation of Ala Mhigo is slated for future content?

I can't even words. -
There's pretty much an inbuilt reason why your character not just would but pretty much has to go to Limsa Lominsa to start his adventuring career: That's where the Marauders Guild is. If he's going to learn to axe fight, he's got to learn it from those who have the time and resources to teach him. Alternatively, maybe he starts his career out in the Black Shroud, learning the ways of one of the local guilds. Eventually he gets frustrated one way or another, and hightails it for Limsa Lominsa and the Marauders Guild. He won't start as a Marauder, but it gives you an in character grounding in Gridania and motivation to later take up a non-Gridanian fighting art. In other words, don't bemoan the Class/starting city ties, use them.

ARTAAAAX! PLEASE! You have to TRY! You have to CARE! DON'T GIVE UP! DON'T GOOOOOOOOOOO! ...Sorry, I don't know what came over me, but my cheeks are really damp for some reason.

I believe the most recent update to the official roadmap states that Job unlock quests won't be available until Phase 4.

Niiice. Do I detect an Amano influence, especially in Basking Tiger? If you wanna draw my characters, I have a post in the reference thread! Also, my anatomy is decent enough for full body drawings, but faces are so much more comfortable to work with, am I right? -
Since I've got some references assembled in the thread for that, I guess I might as well raise my hand. I'd like to see Rhostel with a dorky grin or Nahctgeim with a triumphant smirk, please.

I've been hanging around a long while (back into 1.something) but I've barely RPed with anyone (mostly from wanting to play characters meant for ARR and personal health issues). I've never felt unwelcome or like people weren't happy to RP with me when I would be ready to. This is a fantastic community.

While I don't doubt that the FMS may be a wholly intentional metaphor for PTSD, and other things like veterans being well-remembered and important to society as a group, but often overlooked and dismissed individually, that's clearly not what this is. This is magical amnesia. It affects people so widely because it's magic.

I think there's room for badarse Lalas that aren't Ship. You just have to think outside the box marked 'dwarvish stereotypes'. I got some examples! The Lalafell jock. Pugilist is a great choice for this. A very active, dynamic youth, who occasionally gets laid out flat, but always picks up and keeps trying. I'm thinking about using this, looking at Tidus for inspiration. The stern elder. This Lalafell's seen it all, and now is semi-retired, taking on students. A tough but fair tutor, trying to instil discipline in the apprentices for their own good. Doesn't have quite as much energy for travel these days, but can throw down with any whippersnapper. The valiant champion. Being gallant and virtuous doesn't make you a sissy, in fact if you follow through and put yourself on the line constantly, that makes you a total badarse. Someone aspiring to be a Sultansworn would be a great concept for this. The dervish. Dunesfolk don't all live in Ul'dah. There are many nomadic tribes hidden in the desert, with proud martial traditions. Some practice banditry, others just want to keep outsiders away. If you want to play a professional assassin, this is the most logical background for it in lore, of any race.

Does this contest absolutely have to be pairings with the opposite gender? Even if our characters aren't inclined to their opposite gender, or don't share the gender expression of their models (or are non-binary about gender)? The following is not in any way speaking for Kylin, it's just my thoughts: I think the point of the dance has nothing to do with encouraging romantic pairings, so sexuality isn't really relevant. It's randomised, after all. It does seem to be about traditional gender roles in dance, so on that front any character who doesn't identify their gender strictly with their biological sex should be able to choose which side they want to be on. If they can't choose a side they'd prefer to be on for just one dance, then there's not much that can be done for them. There's no exclusion, the activity simply is what it is, and picking one or the other for the duration of the dance in no way implies an opinion about the greater whole of any participant's lifestyle.

Yessss. Akihiko Yoshida is godly. That Marauder is the best thing ever.

So, while I was exploring the beta this weekend, I stumbled across Little Ala Mhigo. I couldn't stick around for long and talk to all the NPCs, but it's looking a little bit nicer. Even has its own Aetheryte now. I also noticed a couple of the entrances had these huge banners hung outside. They're all identical, but I don't recognise them. All things considered, I think I may have found the official crest of Ala Mhigo. The first two were outside the Eastern entrance, the third outside the West. I didn't see any hanging near the Southern entrance, the widest one that leads directly to the Aetheryte. It did have several of those high walls, but they were all bare.

At the very least, there is a wooden mask available to all Gridanian characters through their early main story quests, and some others that can be crafted by Carpenters.

We've been told AF sets will be able to be dyed at some later date. Not right away, but once they become commonplace enough that iconography is less important than variety. Personally, I'm keen to see Rhos in some firetruck red Dragoon gear.

Definitely applying.

Heyo! You're still up for having Rhostel as a guard, right? I'll be making a temporary version of her, levelling up to ~15 to get a solid suit of armour and unlock airship travel/dyes for RP during open beta, until I can update her 1.0 incarnation.

Well, they're definitely not ageless. Just look at Louisoix. Beyond that? ¯\(°_o)/¯

There was a thread like this a few months ago. *goes digging for it* AHA! My response there still applies, but I'm gonna go think about my other characters now.

It can't be that simple, Uther. I just explained why.

I think it's better left to more specific Linkshells and Free Companies to run their own VoIP chats. They can always invite outsiders to join in when they want to chat. So many of us are already on Skype and can use that for any impromptu voice chat with particular people. I'm concerned that this will inevitably alienate those who do not want to use it. I wouldn't like to speak, and just sitting in there listening without saying anything would make me feel like a creeper, whatever the reassurances of anyone participating. On the flipside, many of those who do participate will drift away from more accessible communication options, because they're too busy concentrating on listening or just feel they don't need them so much. Just looking at how split the vote is gives me great concern. Deir, I know you're not looking for debate, but what you're proposing is something that could have an adverse affect on the community. A debate can't be avoided, whether a civil one now or an explosive one later. Whether it's in the name of the RPC or Intermission, it's a general RP community thing. It affects everyone, whether we participate or not.

Yeah, and Highlander (refugees) are common in Ul'dah, Plainsfolk are common in Limsa Lominsa, and so on. They're not culturally dominant, though, so I didn't get into it. For the other cities, Highlanders were dominant in Ala Mhigo, before the Garleans, Ishgard's culture seems to be defined by worship of Halone and hatred of dragons rather than anything racial, and Sharlayan is still very unknown. I get the impression that it's rather egalitarian though, fixed on intellectual pursuits.

It's probably important to note that, while not uncommon, most people in Eorzea do not have the Echo. If you want to roleplay someone who doesn't, you won't be alone. It is a special trait, but not one that suggests your character is special in any way other than having it.

1. It's like a a wuxia movie, or shounen anime I guess. Magic is magic, but you also have your supernaturally skilled martial artist types. It's nothing like casting spells, it's just letting the Aether (think chi/ki) flow through you to enhance what you do. 2. The specifics vary depending on the type of magic, and you'll get some insight from Class quests (which happen every five levels) and Job quests (which start at 30). Some talent with manipulating Aether is necessary, but it doesn't count for everything. 3. Limit Breaks are big and distracting, but they are incredibly powerful and important to the whole group. Everything else is pretty but not so extravagant as GW2. There are 'combinations' but not in anything like the way GW2 uses the term. More like fighting games, using certain abilities of yours in succession leads to more impressive effects on your targets. Monks/Pugilists particularly benefit from this. 4. Off the top of my head: Sitting in chairs, facial expression emotes, dyes, Linkshells (private chat channels, which I know GW2 suffered a lack of), the Lodestone, and lots and lots of clothing. 5. Uh, see above for most of this. Item appearance won't be transferrable, instead they're going with the far superior option of a wardrobe system. That is, you just equip what you want to look like in special appearance slots, and you're done. I think it's planned for the first major patch after launch. 6. None whatsoever, to our knowledge. Yoshi-P seems very much against it, considering his particular objections to F2P. 7. It's pretty fast. Cycles multiple times per day. Forget how often. Yes, there is weather, including rain, wind, duststorms and more. 8. Some in cutscenes, but we don't know how much, other than almost none is implemented yet. 9. Super easy, you can advance all of them (but only one at a time) and Jobs don't make it any more difficult. You change Classes just by changing equipment, and you can save multiple outfits for practically instant switching. 10. Traditional Miqo'te tribal society has some major gender issues, that differ wildly between the two Clans. Other races are more relaxed, Hyuran perhaps most of all. 11. Eorzean's the main one. That's all I really know. 12. Perhaps not! So long as you're not threatening, they're quite amiable. :moogle:
