I wasn't talking about gear but crafting materials. Though, with 25 slots for each type of gear against 19 Classes and 9 Jobs at launch, as well as the prospect of multiple gear sets for different purposes, it's not a complete non-issue either.

So how about looking at the opportunities for that within the lore? First thing that springs to mind: Something important to him was annihilated in the Calamity. From Bahamut blowing up his Dad to a fragment of Dalamud falling on his tiny home village, there's plenty there to work with. Or maybe he's originally from Ala Mhigo. Even if it's someday liberated from Garlemald, it'll never be what it once was. At least he has the solidarity of other refugees. Or it could be something more low-key and personal. Each city presents its own dangers that threaten to take away all sorts of things important to people. Limsa still has to deal with pirates who refuse to get behind Merlwyb's new order, not to mention those who've gotten in line and been excused for past crimes still committed those past crimes. Then there's the Sahagin, kidnapping and brainwashing to satisfy their Primal, Leviathan. Ul'dah has all sorts of political backstabbing. Members of the Syndicate, like Lord Lolorito, who destroy lives with just a signature because there's a slight profit in it. Gridania may have the worst of it. Simply hunting in the wrong place or stepping on the wrong mushroom could invoke the wrath of the Elementals. If they're angry enough, that means becoming an outcast with little hope of redemption. If that happens to someone close to you, you may have to just live with it. Basically, there's lots of ways to lose very important things in the setting already. :cactuar:

Rhostel and Nahctgeim were nowhere near Carteneau. Nahct has certainly never been there at all. Cyroliant, though? Well, it would be a shame to not have at least one character use that spiffy tattoo. And it makes a lot of other things about his background click into place.

Yup! Was me. You settled on Izaza Iza, huh? Cool!

Does the Emergency Lalafell System come with a complimentary Lalafell? >_> (Welcome and stuff!)

That could just be an indication that Odin will dismount at some point while you fight him. I guess then you have to fight him and Sleipnir separately, kind of like how chocobos will fight alongside players once we dismount?

Don't worry, PS3 FFXIV is really real this time, and what's more, the game is fantastic and sure to be at least a moderate success. But then, you already know that, am I right? Welcome!

Heya. I'm Australian, so being on late by American standards is something that will happen for me on occasion. As for your questions, they seem to be based on faulty premises. You can already choose your nation, it's a component of your class choice. You start in the city with the guild for that class. (This kind of sucks for Limsa Lominsa.) This goes for Legacy characters too. That said, my answers are 1) the ones that are not Gridania, and 2) every class, probably eventually ending up with every combat class at max level on all of my characters. Each would have their particular IC classes, though. I'll most likely specialise my characters to each concentrate on select crafting, and maybe gathering, classes since I'm not quite as fond of that gameplay and to save inventory space.

Holy crap, your avatar is gorgeous. Hi! :moogle:

Viper, you may find you don't get much of a response. That's just because everything you've mentioned has been hashed out to death already, not any slight on your person. I don't think anyone would blame you for not reading through everything that's been said, though. Basically, don't worry. The only real problems here are those caused by pessimism. Patience and acceptance will be rewarded.

I'm only OOC racist against Midlanders. So boooooring.

What happened to Gerik letting his hair grow? :\ Unfortunately, I didn't grab screens of my 1.0 characters. The difference between Nahct and the character I'm converting from 1.0 to make her is staggering.

Don't be passive-aggressive. It helps nothing and nobody anywhere, or at anytime. Just following the letter of the rules while smoothing over a misconception that needed to be. It's not really passive-aggressive when it's totally unambiguous what I meant. Good news, though, no remorse needed! Talked to Ryanti, he's just bewildered and frustrated at how misinterpreted he was. @Uther - A small, manageable eruption now, while it's still fresh enough to be healed properly and not leave a scar. No one involved is so unreasonable as to be unable to comprehend the miscommunication going on here. Just takes some perspective and a little swallowed pride.
-
@Uther - Maybe. I don't think leaving things be solves anything, though. Just leaves bitterness to fester and erupt later. @Armi - Yes! That's a point I was going to make. Sure, Rhostel's tough, muscular and scarred, but she's got a great body and classically attractive features. That's the milieu we're working in. I don't stick exactly to her model, but I've no desire to stray too far from it. If there were more customisation options, would I make take advantage of them to make her uglier and more butch? Maybe, maybe not. But I don't, and that's fine. What there is suits what the game is trying to be. @Beatric - My post was a commentary on what may have been better, not an expectation that it should. I didn't spare Ryanti, you know. And that line about remorse was directed at the one person who agitated this whole matter into a drama fest. That person is not you.

I'm sorry, I was highlighting the things I most agreed with and wanted people to look at. Fixed. Thanks!

I, uh, don't feel comfortable with that edit of my post, FG. It emphasises things in an unbalanced way, and might reshape readers interpretation of my thoughts. Also, it's missing a correction I made. >_>

If only there was a Wrestler Job. Rhos totally would suplex a train. (Yeah, I know Sabin is a Monk, but his version of Monk is almost nothing like FFXIV's.)

I was eager to talk about this initially, but by the time I reached the end of the thread, my enthusiasm was stone cold dead. Yes, Ryanti was overreacting, but if you read his very first sentence again, it's clear why: He's been hassled for playing pretty characters in other games. Seeing this thread obviously triggered some bad memories which prompted him to assume the same thing was happening here. It's not, and ideally he should have taken a step back then reread what people were saying. That said, there's no excuse for anyone going out of their way to try to extract more aggressive interpretations from his post. He was being sensitive and awkwardly explaining his feelings, not trying to mandate prettiness for all. If you've managed to chase him from the community over this petty BS, I hope you feel some remorse over it. Also, the title is misleading. It does sound like an attack, because it's specifically calling out pretty characters. The opening post does so as well, and it's easy enough to assume it's an attack rather than an admission of confusion or a confession of differing tastes. It really should have been called 'Rugged characters in a harsh world'.

For reference, I'd love to see a Lalafell based on this guy: He pretty much fits both options 2 and 4!

Of Chocobos. Questions, and possible confusions.
Rhostel replied to Black's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Actually, I'm fairly certain that is is an actual chocobo. I've never seen anything about barding in any official reference to the Legacy program. The Legacy program information page is quite explicit that it is a chocobo that you're rewarded with. My impression is that the chocobo itself will have distinctive plumage from the standard, or possibly that it has particular barding which cannot be customised. If you didn't get a chocobo through the Grand Company system in 1.0, you won't have one sitting in your inventory or at the Calamity Salvager. If you did, instructions to find the Calamity Salvager in your starting city can be found here. To earn a chocobo, I believe the system is the same now as it was before, more or less. Get to level 20, go through quests that lead to joining a Grand Company, do stuff for them, purchase (or get rewarded with?) a chocobo whistle. This has nothing to do with Legacy chocobos, so far as I'm aware. -
Went back to my sketchbook to update some old sketches to Rhostel's final appearance, for use as reference images. (Already added them to the reference thread.) Interesting note: Rhos doesn't really have any scars on her back. She charges into danger, she doesn't run from it or let it sneak up on her.

You're talking about the Legacy program reward chocobo? Pretty sure that's not implemented yet. -
My answer to this question can be pretty much summed up as: Ehhhhhhhhn. Intelligible answer: I pick what suits the character idea I get. Long answer: I like certain things more than others, and I tend to get more ideas for those, but it's not predictable and I can end up playing characters I'd never anticipate. If you'd told me a few months into playing WoW one of my most cherished characters ever by the time I quit for real would be a night elf warrior, I'd kick you in the teeth. Detailed answer: For Rhostel, I felt a strong pull from the Ala Mhigan lore, especially the refugees, and wanted to play right into that. That made Highlander the logical choice, and that was a little before Highlander females were even fully confirmed, let alone any concepts shown. For Nahctgeim, I wanted to translate the concept of Asami from Avatar: The Legend of Korra into this game. We'd seen female Roegadyn in several screenshots by this point, and I knew their statuesque fabulousness was perfect. Making her a Sea Wolf made everything click into place. It also lead to several divergences from her inspiration, making her all the more rounded and unique.
