  1. Personally I think that... while playing a "villain" and "jerk" character might be fun... it's often not very fun when it pops up spontaneously in RP sessions. I've played villains in the past and it has always been based on a certain amount of planning and Private Message based consent gathering. I mean... it's not like we would plan out every detail of the RP and there was still a lot left to improvisational fun. Still, having the basic guidelines of "this is ok" and "this is not ok" at first really helped in that kind of... erm... "sensitive" RP territory. I honestly feel like just butting into RP sessions with a villainous character and acting like a jerk without first gaining consent of all parties involved is treading on pretty shaky ground. Not everyone feels like an antagonist is welcome or necessary or desired in their RP sessions.... and tension might be alleviated if you, the player of the villain, gague that receptiveness through PMs first.... no?
  2. I'm not going to blather and ramble too much here because I'm still fairly new to this RP community. But still, as an out transwoman, I have found it nice to be part of communities where I can feel less alone and isolated in that. I know some of you like being all strong and independent... but some of us do appreciate support and similarly understanding people to talk to when issues arise. For me MMOs are about more than just RP, questing, dungeons, etc... to me it's a social community where you spent a significant amount of time doing fun activities like that... but still a place online to go and be social. And for someone who sometimes finds themselves in the crosshairs of a still rather hostile society... It's really important to have safe spaces you can turn to. Just saying... It seems nice here so far... but I HAVE witnessed a number of incidents in other MMO games that make me feel less safe sometimes to be open about who I am.
  3. They actually timed this perfectly for me! I just got done at 3am Pacific Time with my weekly radio shift so now I'm hope and ready to play and hour after the scheduled maintenance and *zoop* it just logged right in! Yay! I feel bad for people later in the day when everyone starts to wake up and crowd in at the same time... *shivers*... but, since I'm a night worker and all, I'll be asleep by then! ♪★~(◡‿◕✿)
  4. That's a glitch, you're not getting any closer to getting in. You need to start over. Really? Because the other day I dropped from 255 in cue to 1 and stayed there for a good 15 minutes or more before I finally walked back in to see it logging in. I think the counters just are being goofy and not showing proper numbers but that doesn't mean that you aren't still in cue. Oh yeah, and with those crashes trying to get into the servers... they were happening to me constantly too until I figured out a little trick. I first sign into one of the JAPANESE data centers and then exit out and re-enter into Aether. So far this has worked for me every time! (。ゝ‿‿・)ノ~☆*♪★
  5. It's funny... because recently I was thinking more about my own character's backstory (that I'm still trying to work on forging) and I thought about the idea of having her (a Dunesfolk Lalafell) adopted by Qiqirn. Then again, if adoption is totally way super over-done... I'd hate to beat a dead trope. Even if a Lalafell/Qiqirin combo is somewhat rare (I'd imagine).
  6. Thank you for your welcomes and such, yes yay hoorayyy! ゚・✿ヾ╲(。◕‿◕。)╱✿・゚ Tomorrow is the last day of my sub and then I'll be upgrading to the full game (which arrived in the mail the other day). So I certainly look forward to playing with you all in the future. Still tossing and turning around silly ideas in my head for my character's backstory, to be honest. I think being fresh into a whole new world with lots of lore to look through is holding me back a little... but I've been trying to read through the forums and game docs to get myself acquainted. To be honest, I'm kinda' hoping to connect my character's backstory to the Qiqirn somehow because I utterly love and wub those little beastie rodent people! Maybe I should have her grow up somewhere near Nashmau then (wait... no that's from FFXI isn't it???)? I wonder if I can take an early "research jaunt" to visit there? Seriously though, when I saw little Chuchuroon staring at the fish in Limsa I nearly fell over with giddy tears in my eyes due to the adorableness! I  Yoou Chuchuroon!!
  7. So like.. only one day down without the game then, eh? If that's so then... *sighs relief* Ooh! And in good news... my full copy of the basic game + 60 day time card arrived today! Yayy!
  8. By the way... um... I'm honestly a little confused. I see that the game is coming down for maintenance for a full day before this "Early Access" to Heavensward begins... but what's the deal with non-Heavensward players after that point? Can we still access the vanilla game after the 19th? Or does "Early Access" mean that the entirety of the servers will be roped off and gated for EA code possessing Heavensward players only? Maybe I'm missing some important articles here but everything I'm reading so far seems to kinda' ignore giving any instructions towards non-Heavensward/non-EA players. I was under the impression before that the game would go down for a day and then come back up and normal players could play normally? Buuttt... maybe that's not the case?? :?
  9. Well... it's certainly the game in the series that needed it the most. I remember having a fondness for the aesthetic quality of all the early 8bit and 16bit games that I was raised on... so when I first played FFVII in my early 20s my impressions were NOT positive! I mean... it grew on me and I did wind up enjoying it in a lot of ways... still... aesthetically it felt like a huge step backward from the charm of the 16bit era I'm glad things got fixed to look much much nicer in FFVIII and (OMG my favorite) FFIX!
  10. Interesting to know and thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll just have to continue to keep my eyes open as I play the game and explore the lore more. I do admit that, asides from the vocational crafting guilds, I haven't seen much in the way of schools or academies in-game either... then agian, I haven't been playing long. It's good to know Dunesfolk would likely be more educated since bookish little Suviyo is a Dunesfolk Lalafell and all.
  11. She'd totally be an awkward nerdy girl... A strange bookish type with a bit of an eccentric flair... The quiet one in drama class prone to occasionally bursting out in small moments of giggling whimsy before retreating to the corner again... The girl who takes part in high school band out of a giddy love for music despite not being very good at it *skronk* (。^_・)ノ♪
  12. You know, I've seen this stated in the forums here a few times while looking around and I'm a little confused about it. Is there anything in-game that supports the idea of a large number of illiterate people? Because... so far... all I've seen are examples of people being pretty literate in general. Books, logs, journals, letters, etc... all being passed around in quests.... Signs and posters on the walls... Wearable "reading glasses".... Books decorating buildings... etc... There's also a statement in the Hyur character creation about how Midlanders are taught to read very young or "trained in letters from infancy" if you will. The only thing I've seen to support illiteracy in game was a one-off statement from a game dev without much elaboration (or racial/regional/cultural specifics). Curious if anyone here could point to more examples from in-game text/lore to support this at all? I'd LOVE to know though, because I'm thinking of having my character be pretty literate... or perhaps a "book nerd" if you will. It would be nice to know how odd/rare that kind of thing actually is amongst people (or Lalafell specifically) so I can RP appropriately.
  13. It's funny, in another game I was RPing in... it seemed like I was coming across people RPing this type of scenario constantly! Honestly, I have to say that I'm a little bothered by RP that involves denying one of the player's sense of agency in a situation. And really... it just seems really odd and unlikely that people would find themselves being kidnapped right and left all the time. Also things like the whole "Save the Princess" trope comes to mind when I think about this... and it just winds up feeling pretty tired... plus a little more than regressively disempowering for a female character. So yeah... Unless there was a fun and unique way of playing with the trope and flipping it on its head... I'd rather not ever RP a scenario involving it, myself.
  14. Hello there! I just started playing on my free trial recently and my full boxed copy of the game should be coming to me in the mail soon. I was playing on Famfrit at first because a friend of mine was on that server... but totally wanted to set up a character on Balmung because I truly do enjoy RP! Luckily my roommate was able to get me signed in to Balmung while I was away at work around 2am (I'm a night worker) and I played a bunch this last weekend.... Sooo yayyy!! I'm NOT going to be buying Heavensward any time soon. Maybe a year or two from now I will... but for now the main game is more than enough for me. Erm but yes, let me see... I haven't entirely fleshed out all the backstory and details for my little Lalafell character Suviyo Viyo since I still have a lot to learn about the lore surrounding this game and its world. In general I think I fall somewhere mixed between light and heavy RP. I do like to stick to lore somewhat without doing any wild lorebending-limbo dances (although I try not to be super stodgy/stiff about things)... and I like to focus on having a character who is NOT a "big hero" and more of a whimsical girl focused on the small wonders of daily life and travels in a magical and fantastic fantasy world. I'll look forward to possibly RPing with some of you all in the future! ✲゚。.(✿╹◡╹)ノ☆.。₀:*゚✲゚*:₀'✲゚♪
  15. I'm glad to see there are other people not jumping straight into the expansion. For me it's because of the expansion (and the resulting drastic price drop to $9.99 for boxed copies of the main game) that I can finally feel like I can afford to purchase and play it. So yeah, Got my character set up on Balmung and I'm likely going to go about the process of leveling her up and getting a better feel for the lore and stories of the game and then hopefully get into RPing with some other people. I might purchase Heavensward if/when it drops down closer to $9.99 in price. To be honest, I'm rarely into being the first to purchase and play things. I just bought an Xbox 360 recently and had fun playing games like Oblivion for the first time! I remember back in 2001 or so was when I got my first Playstation... a good six years after its release and it was totally "new" to me. And on and on like that... yup...
