  1. That's okay. I think I have a work-around for it.
  2. On second thought, count Abodo Po out. But count Uther Skystrider in. As an outsider with a high respect for chivalry, I could see him making an ideal supporting character for the non-Devils side. And yeah, it'd have to be non-Devils side because he's pretty much Neutral (former Lawful, sometimes Chaotic) Good all the way around as far as alignment. Still think it's a great idea. Just switching parts for it.
  3. Well, I've got my key plot point now. I realize it's probably not wise to make an Ishgard-born character because of the little lore surrounding them. I figure if I tread lightly though and put in some kind of emotional attachment ("I don't want to talk about it.") and just focus on the facts that we know, it could work. I'm not going Elezen because I don't really like their proportions (plus I'm too short IRL too enjoy being tall in a game), but I'm going to make my Hyur Dragoon very Medieval-European in place of that so it still keeps the Dragoon feel and doesn't seem out of place for what we know of Ishgard. Everyone in the family will have given names inspired by the King Arthur legend (Uther, Arthur, Bors, Mordred, Gawain, etc). Hopefully it works and I don't look like a lore-breaking idiot. One more question! Do we know if and how much Ishgard was damaged during the Bahamut attack or has that yet to be released?
  4. Absolutely. And thanks for the help and the speedy replies, everyone. I'm going to get to work on Uther Skystrider's wiki now that I have all the information I need for a basic framework. I'll add and edit accordingly when SE releases more info. Thanks again!
  5. Never? I've come up with three characters since I've been on these forums. And I still don't know which one is my favorite! I have a problem
  6. Hey everyone, I was wondering if you could pitch in and help me out. I originally posted a question about dragons to the Observational Question(s) thread, but then realized I had a lot more. I'm attempting to create a dragoon character, as it was my (second) favorite job in FFXI and I'm a huge fan of Kain Highwind from FFIV. Obviously, I chose to give him a backstory based in Ishgard. As I was laying out the details I realized I don't know much about the city-state. So I decided to post some questions here to help build a better Ishgard-born Dragoon character. 1. What is the primary race/clan of Ishgard? I always imagined it being Highlander Hyur, but after reading about Ala Mhigo, this seems unlikely. Is it a melting pot like the other city-states? 2. Exactly how real of a threat are the dragons? Clearly they're somewhat of a threat since there's a humongous Dragoon corps there that refuses to leave most of the time. But are these gigantic dragons that destroy everything on a daily basis or smaller dragonkin that kind of wander around attacking people. Are they actively at war or is it a type of passive protection sort of deal? 3. Their chosen deity is Halone, the Fury, but how strict are they on that? Will you be banished for not worshiping Halone or is it sort of like the main three city-state deities where no one really cares? 4. What is their relationship with other city-states? It seems to me they are isolationist, but after reading that they are the main source of chocobos, it stands to reason that they have to trade with the outside world. Gridania is the closest city-state it seems. Are they rivals or do they work together? Or do they keep to themselves outside the chocobo trade? 5. Speaking of chocobos, should we assume that Ishgardians are outstanding chocobo riders? The combination of a polearm-heavy military and the largest chocobo population in Eorzea leads me to believe they're very proficient mounted knights. How well does that hold up with the rest of the lore? 6. Is their culture a strict Spartan-like culture of every male being trained to fight dragons since birth, or is it just something like "if you do join the military, you will be trained as a Dragoon. Otherwise, do whatever you want in life"? Help is always appreciated. Thanks, everyone!
  7. That's a better explanation than any SE could conjure up, imo. Also, while we have this question thread up, I have another question: How common are these "sentient dragons" in Ishgard? What I've read says that Ishgard's military is almost entirely made of Dragoons and they couldn't spare any to the Grand Companies because they needed them. That leads me to believe that dragons are a pretty real threat, but does it take one Dragoon to kill a dragon or is it like a month-long military excursion to battle one? And how often are they showing up to wreck everyone's day? I'm working on a character to replace A'sili Abarskyf as my designated Disciple of War, and he was going to be of Ishgard origin, so if anyone could help that'd be appreciated.
  8. You caught Abodo Po at a bad time. Despite being a dedicated and well-paid scientist for six years, lately he's been .... well, he's been a homeless vagabond. Unemployed Uther Skystrider, a character I'm going to test out before I Jump (its funny because he's a dragoon) into, is .......... also unemployed. (assuming he's up my alley and I want to RP him at launch) I need to stop making dirty hobos.
  9. This is awesome. This is beyond awesome. But it's also kind of depressing. I thought I knew what I wanted to look like, but now with all these options I have to spend at least two extra hours in the character creator... and I have a new character idea so that's like four hours. I'll be sure to RP with you guys in a year when I'm done exploring all my character appearance options. :?
  10. My vote two weeks ago was for my former main character, A'sili Abarskyf, who I won't be playing at launch initially. Abodo Po was a 23 year old scientist when Dalamud fell. Didn't get frozen, became an adventurer. He'll be 28 years old at ARR, with five years of adventuring experience. He'll be experienced enough at that point to not be seen as a rookie, while the people who were frozen will still see him as "new" because he didn't start his career until after everyone was frozen.
  11. Welcome! I was a little intimidated to join first, too, but this community is very helpful and I feel right at home with them now. On a side note: Your comic book comment caught my eye. I've been reading both Marvel and DC comics on a monthly basis since I was six years old (that'd be 1996.) As for X-Men, right now I'm following Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men, Wolverine, and Savage Wolverine. (I also follow Superior Spider-Man, Avenging Spider-Man, Batman, Justice League, The Avengers, and Captain America) Just thought I'd share that so you don't feel like an outsider. Your character sounds interesting. I like this idea a lot. It's very Joan-of-Arc-meets-Pirates. On the RP experience note, a few of us don't have much RP experience. Personally, I have just enough to know what to do and what not to do. (My experience doesn't extend past Final Fantasy XI, LOTRO, and Champions Online, of which I RP'd for about a combined year. And Champions Online RP was virtually nothing but god-moding and meta-gaming. Every character did it with no exceptions. It sucked.) This is a long, drawn-out welcome, but that's not uncommon for me. Anyways, I hope you enjoy your stay in our wonderful little community, and I hope to RP with your character soon.
  12. These are good questions that I don't have the answer for but I'm sort of wondering the same thing. I've been wondering about the Male Miqo'te thing for a while (though honestly, I'm not playing one as of yet so I have to admit I don't really care.) and I've been thinking the Ul'dah thing over. My character is from Ul'dah, and disappeared when Dalamud fell. It was easy for him to run away because of the chaos. I never expected that Ul'dah itself was being destroyed, but I always assumed the danger was close and real enough so that there would be hysteria in the streets and make it easy for him to slip out of town unnoticed. If someone could clear up the exact impact the event had on Ul'dah, it would really help me get my story straight.

    Heyo!

Welcome to the RPC! Come on in here and give us a big ol' hug! I've recently decided on Heavy RP so it's good to see some more Heavy RPers in the group. (I'd hate to be the outcast of roleplayers by roleplaying too much lol) If there's anything you need, don't hesitate to ask one of us, and if you're stumped for ideas (it doesnt look like you are) feel free to check the Player Characters section of the wiki for some possible inspiration!
  14. Both of you made great points. Somehow I overlooked the entire Bahamut attack thing. I guess I was pretty tired when I asked my questions. Also, the part about using beta to decide what a character will look like is another thing I overlooked. In every beta I've been in, I've spent almost the whole time making characters, running around with them to test their appearance, deleting them, and re-making them over and over to get them perfect. The only way I could RP that is "I'm getting a lot of haircuts and facial reconstructive surgery today." Maybe I'm just too excited to jump into RPing. When writing the thread, the 1.0 character integration was on my mind as well, and how that is going to play out in a beta where everything except those characters gets wiped between phases. I suppose it's different from a player-to-player basis, as most things in RP are. Thanks for the speedy answers!
  15. This might get me the award for "dumbest question of the year" but I've been wondering this for the past few MMOs I've played. What is the etiquette on RPing in betas? Hypothetically, if someone in the RPC ran into someone else in the RPC during a beta, would they RP? Or is a game's beta considered universal OOC? In addition to this, if RPing were to happen, would it be considered canon or just a sort of practice RP session that doesn't count? Or do heavy RPers make separate characters for beta testing? Keep in mind this isn't just a FFXIV question. I've been wondering this for a while in regards to multiple games.
  16. Right now, Abodo Po falls under Thaumaturge/ Black Mage, but I see him becoming a sort of half tech half magic class like a Gun Mage in the coming years as he finds a balance between science and magic. Right now he is kind of flip flopping between 100% magic and 100% science.
  17. I'm going to hop on the bandwagon here. No point in a chatroom this close to launch. Especially one that costs money. Skype works fine and once the game is out there won't be much use for chatrooms since we'll all just be running into each other and RPing all the time in-game. It's a cool find for sure, and I'm not trying to sound harsh, but I think we could save some time and money by just skipping it, seeing as how we're getting damn close to release.
  18. I was thinking the dragoon looked really cool, but really familiar. Then I remembered the Final Fantasy IV logo. Nice try, SE.
  19. I guess I'll join the chanting now that I've said my piece. ONE OF US ONE OF US

Yeah, I can't say I disagree with that. No one should be told what to play and everyone should be able to play what they want without someone getting on their case about it. I'm not saying "Don't play Miqo'te. There are too many." I'm just commenting on how strange I think it is that the population balance in-game is so different from the population balance in the lore.
  21. I, too, despise lore-breaking.... I accept your terms. Whether I have a choice or not.

^ This. I think it's weird how low the Hyur population is and how high the Miqo'te population is. Elezen is right where it should be, Lalafell and Roegadyn are a bit low, but that's understandable. People aren't usually big fans of the extremes in most games. Play what you want of course, but I couldn't help throw in my observation. I won't shun anyone for playing an admittedly cool looking race, obviously. I just think the population ratio is off. The way I always saw the population was Hyur - 30% Elezen - 25% Lalafell - 20% Roegadyn - 15% Miqo'te - 10% or something to that effect.

    Mission Accomplished.
  24. OB is phase 4, but phase 3 they're trying to integrate PS3 and Legacy characters. Also, for anyone interested that didn't know; New Gridania, Old Gridania, and Character Creation have been removed from the NDA. You can talk about them now but you still can't show screenshots, sound clips, or videos. Didn't know the proper place to post that, so I just kind of said it here.
  25. I'm a little late on this welcome wagon, but :bomb::tonberry::ahriman::cactuar::chocobo::moogle:WELCOME TO THE RPC!:moogle::chocobo::cactuar::ahriman::tonberry::bomb: (Don't ever say I didn't do anything for ya) I love the idea of a nomadic desert family (well husband and wife at least) of Miqo'te. It sounds like an interesting way of still having the husband-and-wife dynamic while staying adventurous. In FFXI every married couple I RP'd with was tarutaru and none of them seemed to care about character development beyond "we're married"... it was like RPing with the Ice Climbers. I hope you enjoy your stay and I hope to RP with your nomadic miqo'te desert couple at launch!
