My Raen was traveling from Xaela tribe to Xaela tribe when the Garlean invasion hit. She happened to have a bodyguard at the time, so we agreed to have them embark on a two week excursion across the Steppes fleeing the Garleans towards the coast. They traveled at night and hid during the day. Once they arrived at the coast, I sort've assumed there would be boats and captains for hire to port refugees away. Now that you mention it though, the Garleans may have been watching the seas... Anyway, I was playing it as 'sailing crews were whisking large groups to safety', not that my character was doing the sailing herself

Totally read this as 'Nervous Wreck introduces herself' and thought to myself: oh another Roegadyn? Coooolll

Real power has zero to do with level. Zilch. Nada. It has nothing to do with gear, gil, or class. It has *everything* to do with how your character carries themselves. Do they, by their actions, instill awe, fear, or respect? Or are they a cartoon caricature looking for a fight with anything that moves? Power is never assumed and must be continously earned. Just because you are considered OP in your circles means nothing to me. You must prove to my character you are someone to be reckoned with. Do people get out of line trying to prove how tough they are? Absolutely. Their actions show they don't have a firm grasp on how power is represented, and this has *nothing* to do with level. It has to do with skill in story telling. Player level can only be accessed via meta-gaming, and therefore should be tossed right out the window. Pay attention to the rp first, and then decide how you feel about the person.

Haha yea. My Au Ra monk belonged to a Doman temple with its own tenets and skills. I feel there's a bit of a rift between those who create their own content, and those who only adhere to what they can see. Neither side is inherently wrong or right, but to go too far in either direction kind've precludes you from larger community rp. Flexibility within reason, is basically what um trying to say.

@Lilla: I'm one of those people who doesn't enjoy surprises. This isn't a personal attack on anyone, but I simply do not trust the basic rpers story telling skills. I've had someone try to eat one of my chars, and they didn't have an out. I've had chars I've poured countless hours into become broken to the point of no longer fun to play by surprises. While I try not to stir up any ooc drama, it does leave me ooc upset to lose my joy over a character The solution I've come up with iS extensive ooc communication. Especially initially. I have people I've rpd years with who can surprise me all they want because that lvl of trust is there. But new people? That trust has to be built first. Usually by engaging in safer rp and feeling each other out.

See, I never said anything about high level characters not having flaws. Flaws are absolutely necessary for a character, OP characters are boring and annoying to RP with. My stance is that between two good RPers, if they are fighting (without rolls and no OOC arrangement) I will not be able to take a level 20 character as seriously as the level 55 one. I once had someone oocily make veiled threats towards my character, claiming she had been "an expert ninja and dancer and sorcerer" because she was "trained all her life". She was level 18. She was threatening my level 50 character OOCily. I'm sorry, perhaps I am horrid, but I find that laughable at best. Perhaps it was the unprovoked veiled aggression that left a bitter taste in my mouth towards such individuals. Does it mean I would never allow my character to get beaten by a low level character? Absolutely not. In fact, she has lost many fights and has been nearly killed by low-level characters. But I believe that for such scenarios, there has to be an OOC agreement beforehand (and trust), while I am more open to a level 50 random seeking a fight with my character. But their life didn't begin at lvl 1. Their training didn't begin at lvl 1. Their story began long before the ooc player ever set foot in Eorzea. That's why it's called a BACK story. Ooc lvl has absolutely nothing to do with it. Dnd rp is not the same as mmo rp

I do prefer rolls. Especially when matched with character sheets. I'm talking about non-roll based combat though, which seems to be rather popular. There is no ultimate decider for non roll based combat, so yea... you run into people building enough power levels to slay a Primal when they are sitting at lvl one. They have not signed on to an agreed set of rules so they go as far as their imagination allows... which can be pretty far. I avoid combat rp unless I'm comfortable with the other rper, or unless there are established groundrules. EDIT: @ Gege: I had someone comment icly on my characters archery, because they checked to see I was oocly an archer. But... I had my bow hidden. I was oocly archer because it was a higher lvl class, therefore access to more clothes. Icly, my character explained they'd never touched a bow in their life. They preferred to do their talking with their fists. The other person seemed sorely confused ^^;

This is why I prefer dice and simplified char sheets with any combat related rp. Because otherwise... people just cheat. Suddenly become capable of things they hadn't been capable of before. Dice keeps people honest. Dice, or heavy OOC communication before the conflict. However, I personally don't think ooc level matters, only authenticity of how you've played ur character up to that point.

Apologies for not responding to people sooner... This Linkshell is no longer active. Would appreciate if the Mod removes it. Will be launching a similar idea soon as a FC and/or LS based out of Limsa, so please feel free to PM me on this site if you have interest/questions about it.
-
Hugs and Cake is a good one with a lot of nice open minded people who rp and do progression. Another is Open RP, which is very similar. Look in the Linkshell hall and see about contact information for them .... Mel beat me to it..

First and foremost... pre-emptive welcome! Yes logging on to Balmung is pretty hard right now, but I imagine it's the same with Gilgamesh, since they share the same data center. The RP community on Balmung is large. I often see lots of rp going on in the world, in random areas, and there are lots of events. That said, not everyone is welcoming to walk up rp, and some may flat out ignore you. It's a Community. Which means while there are a number of prickly folks, there are also a lot of nice ones. Networking through various LS' S is probably the best way to find RP: almost all of my rp in this game is pre-scheduled, which suits me just fine, as I love the games pve content too. Through networking, I can get as much or as little rp as I want (usually) because as stated... the rp community here is really big :0) Also, you should totally rp with Melodia because she's awesome c:

By accessing the email. I got for my EA registration, I was able to follow the same link to get my HW registration code. Hope that helps!

Once I'm able to get in game consistently Flo I'm more than happy to rp with you more. I've got at least 1 (possibly 2) Au ras on the way

The Great Crash of '15 - Gripes and Rants Are Going Heavensward

Going by the notice they posted here, http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/240082-Aether-Data-Center-Down?p=3052265#post3052265 there really isn't a 'plan' to fix anything. So I doubt we will see a resolution so much as its all about to get worse on the 23rd and stay bad until traffic dies on its own. Which hopefully will be within the month but I still don't feel I should pay them for an inaccessible game. I work from home and I can say I tried for four straight hours with zero results. Both times I even managed to get in a queue, the lobby error eventually booted me anyway. If we can't get on now, launch is gonna make it impossible. I also like how they say that Gilgamesh and Balmung /happen/ to be on the same data center. You freakin' put them there! They didn't stumble in there on their own. What I managed to play yesterday was great but I'm left kinda bitter when its all a matter of luck if I can play at all and for how long. Probably won't go over with new players either. You are gonna have a free week when your game isn't playable to huge chunks of people? *thumbs up* Great plan. I'm starting to wonder if the RP community should take over a less populated server somewhere. It wouldn't be optimal, but having our RP community essentially sitting on the two biggest servers makes this more painful for us. There are deep roots though; there might not be a good way to go about this. I've started to wonder the same thing. I mean, it will never happen, but it would be nice. However, around 9 pm EST last night I decided to poke around on Primal, the other NA data center. I could get on easy enougj! But every single server was closed to new charactets. I can only imagine what a new NA player must be thinking, unable to log onto one data center, and unable to create a character on the other. So then I went to the EU data center. All but three were closed off to character creation. While I'm aware these restrictions are most likely lifted during non peak hours, it sure feels like SE'S servers are overcrowded as a whole. Since I can only play during peak EST hours during the week, I feel like I have three options: -derp around on my EU character. - unsub for a month and come back hoping people have left... hoping people have left just feels like a flawed philosophy >_< -radically change my sleeping habits. I'll probably go with option 1 long live Zodiark! -
There is a lot of truth to this and I feel it accounts for a lot of "fish out of water" style backstories. When it comes down to it, characters need a reason that they left home and there's only so much you can do here, especially with reclusive tribes. I feel that we'll see a lot of it with Au Ra also. Agreed. And as I've mentioned before, I've seen the exile/outsider route taken far more often then 'adopted', and I think we are already seeing that with a lot of Xaela. I didn't want my character to have done something wrong, nor did I want her to have some quirk that set her apart. Though, I suppose she is different in that she feels no desire to leave home and do amazing things. Her great adventure in life was learning to be a better chef ^^;
-
Miqo'te lore screwed over Seeker role-players in that regard BUT! there are ways to spin it other than "adventurer" or "adopted." For example, I have a Seeker who was sort of the runt of the tribe, a wimp, who spent more time at home reading and daydreaming than doing anything productive for the tribe, which led to some resentment from her tribe. She read a lot of romance novels and books about other places and cultures, and romanticized them in her mind. She preferred the allure of them rather than the feral tribal life that she just didn't fit in with, so she left after her mother died. I have another Seeker who was kicked from her tribe when her interest in technology and all things Magitek and Allagan was feared to be traitorous or sympathetic to Garleans. I have another Seeker whose tribe disbanded due to internal power struggle, betrayal, and its leader being murdered by one of their own. Another alternative: my RP partner plays a Nunh who was exiled from his tribe when he began abusing his position and mistreating the women in his tribe. There are plenty of alternatives for anyone wanting their own twist on things! I have actually met a lot more 'outsider' and 'exile' Miqo (especially amongst Tias and Nuhns) then I have adopted Miqo. And yet, despite the fact that this trope is heavily overused, all the characters you described sound interesting to me. A trope doesn't define a character, who they are in the here and now does.
-
@Daitokuji: But... in order to actually rp with people, you have to be the trope: 'adventurer dissatisfied with home, seeks new horizons'. It's 6 in one, half dozen in the other. Traditional Seekers are reclusive, keeping to their tribes, generally not making contact with the outside world. There are small pockets of Miqo that engage in tribal rp exclusively with each other and that's awesome. But any Miqo who has entered the wider world has embraced a vastly overused trope. Whether it be 'the exile' 'seeks new horizons' or 'adopted' most rpers.... actually want their characters to rp with other people. So they used the trope that best suits them as to why their character is no longer in the tribe.

The Great Crash of '15 - Gripes and Rants Are Going Heavensward

I figured there'd be a lot more emo Au Ras o: -
Good stuff here, but I also stand by my previous statement that due to sheer numbers, pretty much all bases of Miqo RP are abundantly covered. That includes tribal kitties, brooding male Miqos (of which there are far too many to count) adopted kitties, backwoods Keepers, etc. etc. the entire race has pretty much become a trope. Which is fine. Obviously I play one so I'd be a big fat hypocrite if I didn't rp with Miqo's. In fact, I rp with quite a number of them and enjoy their stories, even if I've heard it before. And honestly... I don't think I've heard an original story since I started playing ARR. It's not in the story itself, it's in how believable and real you make it feel to others around you. Just as Xaela has become an instant rp trope (seriously, am I the only Raen on Balmung?) it doens't mean there won't be good stories and good rpers amongst them. Finally.... backstory is meant to define and guide who your character is in the here and now. Claire was raised Hyur, by a baker. Because of this, she's led a sheltered life free of danger and hardship, which at times leads to some really enlightening, eye opening moments when she realizes just how dangerous the real world can get (she's a bit of a coward when violence is involved). I don't know that she could have reached this personality growing up in the hard tribal life of a Seeker. She would not have been the character I wanted to play when I imagined her. The Seeker lore can be pretty limiting for those who want to play Miqo's as something other than 'fierce amazonian', and so adoption is a pretty easy route to take. It's a means to an end. Imperfect, but if it's what led to your character being the awesome person they are today, then it's the backstory they were meant to have!
