For Sola: For Lyra: For Claire:

Hello Thomas, and welcome to the rpc! If you are new to roleplay, I would suggest looking for a FC or LS with an emphasis on lighter, more social driven rp, as to jump into a heavy story from the get go can be a little overwhelming and intimidating. You might also want to check out events, or hang out for a little bit in some of the taverns, just to watch and pick up some tricks of the hobby. But your best bet to find a small group, or some 1 on 1 help/instruction/beginner friendly rp is in the aforementione Rp FC/LS

The weekends usually won't work period, but I was able to get in at 7 am on a Wednesday. Though you may have to try earleier than that.

Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to roll a new character on Balmung or Gilgamesh right now (the two rp servers), as both are very populated/full. The best time to try is very early in the morning, but there's no guarantee that will work. However, should luck and determination prevail, then certainly we should rp! Good luck!

Overpowered or underpowered characters?
Magellan replied to Mitzer The Mighty's topic in RP Discussion
You say that, but I don't know. What would you define as OP, then? I'd like for my character to have credibility for RP purposes, but /random just hates me and she's never won a single fight using it. That's just bad luck, but it definitely stretches the plausibility of her having trained her entire life to beat people to death with her bare hands. I don't really care about her being the strongest, but I'd like people to at least have IC reason to take her seriously, lol. See, and there's a problem there (bolded part). Not on your end; its certainly plausible for you to construct a viscious killer (and/or just strong, capable fighter), but there are not too many people out there who seem willing to let their PC's die, or get their butts handed to them. In order to build up the plausability of your characters fierce veracity, you'd almost have to have her attack npcs just to show what she's capable of. I agree the dice system can be too simplistic, and those of us prone to bad rolls (such as yours truly) can get nowhere with it. I had a character who was supposed to be an excellent hand-to-hand fighter, a skill she tried to train others on. Only, she kept losing every sparring match because characters who had had zero training in this combat style were pulling off moves that'd put Jason Bourne to shame. And that smacks of OP; implausibly giving your characters skills they simply don't have cuz: Nope. I don't lose fights. There are enough of these sorts out there that I only combat rp with close, trusted friends. Even if two characters fight that are equally trained, there's not really a good system in place to determine the outcome, so OOC trust between combatants is key. -

I've got a brawler character. This sounds like this could be fun -
Overpowered or underpowered characters?
Magellan replied to Mitzer The Mighty's topic in RP Discussion
I have yet to come across a good OP character. I'm not saying its impossible, but things can (and often do) become such an epeen measuring contest, because there is no 'authority' (read, DM,) who can settle who does, in fact have the stronger character in a combat situation. You can settle on /random rolls, though that might be a little too basic for some people. On the whole, I actually try to avoid combat rp altogether, unless I am on my underpowered characters. Then, I know my characterbis gonna lose anyway, and I can have fun with it. On my stronger characters, however, well... people tend to act like their characters have never lost a fight in anything, and it can quickly escalate in a dragonball z episode, which is not a show that ever interested me. Npc'd OP characters, however, can be very fun. OP player characters, not so much. -
Very interesting article, solid read. I was guilty of a lot of bleed with my first FFXIV character. I was still pretty new to rp, and felt both her joys and her heartaches way too hard. While it made for intensely satisfying, rewarding rp, and a sense of boundless, pure creativity, it also had the Icarus effect: when the story she was in crashed and burned, so too did I. Unfortunately after that, I found myself unable to connect with my characters in any meaningful way. It was a full year before I picked up rp and mmos again, and when I feel bleed at the fringes now, I make sure to strengthen my alibi, as the article coins it. However, I have also managed to find the line where I can connect with my characters again, can fully emphathize with them, even cry and laugh with them, but am able to much better put them down when I am done playing with them and mitigate any sort of negative bleed effect. I see a lot of people make the same mistakes I made, and through my own edperiences know not to judge them by it, but to try and help soften the emotional impact bleed can cause. Only through experience do we learn to identify and properly control this aspect of rp.

He might get along with my character Claire Fialo. She's a bit of a talker (aka loud) too. Plus, she's an IC chef, so if he's always hungry..... I'll be on her all night tonight if ya wanna send a tell.

That sounds perfectly fine! We'd love to have you. When are you usually available in-game? My character would love to meet yours, if that's alright with you! I'll probably be on my character Sola Rose most of the night. I'll be on claire tomorrow, off and on 5pm-11pm US EST, my usual weekday login times

The problem with MMOs is, I have trouble killing, maiming, or otherwise incapacitating a character I have spent literally hundreds of hours leveling, gearing, finding the right rp clothes for, and a lot of times spending real money on to deck out. 'For the sake of story' kinda loses out in the face of this. I'm a hobbyist writer, and I'm much rougher on my characters in my own stories, or even in forum rp, than in game. Because if I no longer like my character ICly (or if they are dead) I lose interest in playing them OOCly. A story is supposed to end, so you use at your disposal all the things that will add up to a satisfying conclusion, including killing off well-liked characters. RP doesn't really end, until you're ready for it to. If you kill a character off, you have to be willing to face the consequence of another huge timesink, possibly spending real money, and having to find new characters to rp with.

If it's okay to be in the LS only, this is actually somewhat similar to something I am trying to do in the Gridania area, and is a cause my character Claire Fialo would be interested in. Edit: Nevermind... just read POSH section. Missed it first time cuz... tired ^^; I would like to sign up for the LS then. I'm off for awhile, but will keep an eye out for you later.

I used to rp on Gilga, and so know through the grapevine that the community has more or less moved here: http://www.gilgamesh-rp.com Best wishes and happy rping!

Okay, I'll bite; my character Lyra is a wildling who only recently has shown interest in approaching civilization (mostly out of curiousity, and becoming more aware of her own race and identity). I've been trying to find a way to get her more involved in the Gridania area as a whole, so a friendly first connection might entice her to explore society further. OOC warning: she has a MAJOR language barrier. Hope your character is patient ^^;

Damn.....comic relief is my specialty ^^ if only I had the time to offer a character for this

balmung Seeking Companionship (Newbie looking for friends)
Magellan replied to Nara'to's topic in Chronicled Connections
All I can say is perservere. It can be hard to find your way in sometimes, especially if you're playing a shy character. Heck some of my characters struggle to find rp. I can't promise I'll always be available to rp (first time back to the game in over a year, so I've been doing a lot of leveling stuff) but I'm almost always up for a chat. Good luck! -Lyra Blueflower/Claire Fialo -
For those I've been unable to get in touch with in game, just search for any of the LS leaders listed on the post. Also looking for volunteers to help run an event in a few weeks. Message me in game or here if interested

Call it lack of skill on my part: I struggle to create interesting male characters, and therefore don't have as much fun playing/rping them.
-
Tbh, I hadn't really noticed the gender imbalance, but I haven't fully gotten back into the swing of things rp wise yet. I guess it wouldn't surprise me. Just as it doesn't surprise me that there's nothing but Miqo's for malms and malms in Eorzea.
-
Ah, how did I miss this? I wouldlove to join the LS on Lyra
-
Oh no I didn't take it negatively, and I hope I didn't come across as disapproving of progressive style rp. I think its great that other people use the leveling system to denote their characters actual growth, it just hasn't worked for me personally with mmos.

I don't approach MMO RP the same way I would DnD RP. In fact, I generally try to separate the game mechanics from RP entirely. Rather than try to fit my character into the structures the game has created, I try to fit the structures of the game into my character. For instance, my character Lyra is a lvl 25 lancer in game. So ICly she should be rising pretty fast right? Really showing progress, starting to reach a deeper and higher level of her craft. But she isn't. Everything she's learned so far has been self-taught, and shaped by her environment in the wilds. The form of lancing she uses would not be recognizable to the lancer's guild. It's also a very undisciplined form. In DnD, the game mechanics are tied inherently into the rp experience, and created specifically for RP. That does not hold true with MMO. If I try to play my character firmly within the game mechanics, I end up feeling frustrating by the enormity of restrictions. So... at lvl 1, in an MMO, I tend to base her skills off of what I want them to be at that time in her life, not off of what's actually available to her via the game itself.

I always name them what I think my character would name them ICly, and so I have: -Sebastian -Butterscotch and -Starlight

*cough cough* uh.... there's an rp tax... payable to Claire Fialo... (you can send by moogle mail) couple thousand gil will do... nothing absurd or anything.... the most important thing to know is to remember to have fun. Welcome!
