  1. Sure, I can understand that completely, but one thing you need to keep in mind too (and I believe FreelanceWizard said this earlier) is that the cost of items you buy from vendors are scaled on PC income, not IC income. Looking at prices for certain things does give you a good impression of the economy, but not an accurate one. What is made readily available to us as players may be completely inaccessible to the normal person, or something that could be so common you could walk outside your front door and find it everywhere is given a price simply because the game doesn't support it being given away for free (Moko Grass comes to mind). The fact that a full set of Hempen Gear will cost you... we'll say 555 gil based on a few pieces of gear I saw on the list you created, that seems like it'd probably be well out of the range for someone who is poor and destitute, but it's effectively nothing more than the equivalent of wearing a potato sack, and it's made almost exclusively out of grass you can find in every corner of the Black Shroud. So basically to clothe one person with clothing made out of grass, it costs as much as it would cost to feed an entire family (if we assume the average family is 3-4 peope) three meals a day for a week, to clothe everyone in the family it would cost them an entire months worth of food (assuming they are eating ONLY marmot steak, since I saw that mentioned as a staple food for poor people). You can make hempen gear as a level 1 Weaver, so we can assume the gear is so shoddy that effectively anyone who knows how to use a sewing needle and how to pick some grass (that, as I said before, grows EVERYWHERE) could make it with little effort at all, and yet this clothing costs as much as feeding a family for a whole week? This is where trying to decipher the value of in game currency based on the costs of in game items pretty much goes out the window.
  2. The problem I see with trying to give value to in game currency is that you really can't. For example using the list of gear you show for an example, by around level 10 a single character is already wealthy enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life and ten more. I made a new character for this current test and reached level 20 today and I've already got almost 40,000 gil. By that, I could afford several suits of high end armor, all the food I could ever want, potions to drown myself in, etc. So while it's fun to think about, it doesn't really work well in practice because players amass wealth far above and beyond what you would assume is the economic norm for non-players, and they tend to do it very quickly.
  3. I remember it being said somewhere by Yoshida that Minions were supposed to be some kind of magical toy, and we were supposed to meet the person who makes them at some point in the game. Kinda makes me wonder how that will change things, especially since they don't really seem like toys... accept for the ones that are.
  4. I could see some Minions being used IC, like raising a Chocobo Hatchling, or as you mentioned the Mammot as we see them being used in game by Goldsmiths. I'm more thinking about things like the little floating hand, or... I don't know, even the Cherry Bomb seems a bit hard to explain in character, I mean how do you explain having a Bomb that follows you around? Like I mentioned in the OP, the Wind-Up Dalamud from the OST seems like the hardest to explain, it would be like if someone started selling toys to commemorate a great tragedy where the world almost ended and hundreds of people perished, including some of the worlds greatest heroes.
  5. Do you consider them IC, or do you disregard them as being a purely OOC novelty item? If you were someone who fought at the battle of Carteneau, how would you react to seeing someone walking around with a wind-up Dalamud, or a mini Bahamut? I think I recall there being mention of some kind of lore explanation for minions that we'd see later on, but barring that happening what are your guys thoughts? /discuss
  6. Here's some of my theories based on lore and general feel of the classes Archer > Bard/Ranger Marauder > Warrior/Berserker Thaumaturge > Black Mage/Necromancer Conjurer > White Mage/Geomancer Gladiator > Paladin/Red Mage (or Rune Knight) Pugilist > Monk/Dancer Lancer > Dragoon/??? Musketeer > Corsair/Machinist Saboteur > Thief/Ninja I suggest you try TERA if you haven't, playing a Warrior is all about holding aggro and avoiding being hit and it's insanely fun, vastly more so than Lancer in my opinion. Edit: One of the things I should point out too is that I'm almost 100% certain we won't see combinations like Archer to Musketeer, mainly because it goes against the entire way the job system works. You don't change your weapon when you change your job, you just equip an item that then unlocks new abilities you can use, so the core of each class is still represented. Any job based on Pugilist will always use fists, any job based on Archer will always use a bow, any job based on Gladiator will always use sword and shield, etc.
  7. Yup, pretty much this. ^
  8. Phase 4 is supposed to have the Coliseum available, so we'll have the opportunity to test it then. They wouldn't be able to allow us to test it in Phase 3 because it's not in the current build, they'd have to release an entirely new client just for a single weekend of testing. I actually didn't expect phase 4 to be much longer than a week, two tops. I am however very excited to learn that Arcanist will be available in Phase 4.
  9. -7/12: After some discussion we've decided to change the name of the LS to be a bit more lore fitting. More information regarding the name change and the background behind the group is coming soon.
  10. That's actually not true, Cerberus, Moogle, Odin, Shiva, and Ragnarok all have European Data Centers. As far as a European RP server, your best bet is still Balmung or Gilgamesh.
  11. They'll also hold any of the preorder or promo items, I have the gloves from FFXIII and the Garlond Goggles from preordering 1.0 and I can put those in there. I assume you'll also be able to store the Mog Hat, and likely the FFXIII gear from the Lightning event as well. As far as using your retainers in the market ward, I believe that was the point of being able to create a stall in your home to replace the market ward. Though I don't see what the difference is between them selling things directly, or on the market boards.
  12. He's actually said a few times now that there was going to be an explanation for why she existed in FF14, in fact he even said it during the event they announced it to begin with. The problem was that people were getting so irrationally angry over her existence that that bit of information kind of got lost. Still, I don't think ANY explanation will quell the rage her existence has caused, because it's still the real Lightning and not just a Hyur that looks like her.
  13. Retainers appear to be free at the moment, and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere that we'll need to pay for them in the future. They are intended to server as your character's bank as well as a sort of "fence" for your wares (they're the only way you can sell things on the market boards). The only future plans I've seen mentioned for them were that you can customize their appearance (I believe as early as Phase 4), you'll be able to build a market stall at your home where you can set one up to work as a vendor, and it was even mentioned some time ago that they may at some point even be able to gather materials for you.
  14. I've been playing around with mine for a while now trying to decide what I want and what I like, finally thing I settled on something.
  15. If anyone is interested, Logitech is giving away 5,000 beta keys right now. Get em while they're hot! https://www.facebook.com/logitechgaming
  16. *just... leaves this here for folks...*
  17. Firstly... Then secondly... and finally... Super Dickery...
  18. Him.... and 90% of every other anime character Kenshin was awesome and I loved the Samurai X movies, but still I don't think he's appropriate to call a superhero. No more than say, Goku. Of course, if Kenshin is a viable option I'd like to change my vote to Doctor Who. In 50 years he's probably saved Earth more than any other comic hero in existence. Not only that, but he's saved countless other planets, and time itself, as well.
  19. One thing I'd like to point out, at least in regards to how SE went about handling character transfers from 1.0 to 2.0, is that technically FFXIV: ARR is a brand new game, not JUST a reboot of an old game. It's no different than say the remakes of the classic Final Fantasy games, or the sequels like FFXIII-2 or even FFX-2. In none of those games were you allowed to say "Hey, I already played this game. I should be able to keep my old stuff." Well... maybe in FFXIII-2 since I never played it, but I know in the remakes and in FFX-2 you started fresh. They did something that allowed them to import character data from the previous version of the game while still allowing them to keep those characters relevant to the updated lore. Does it feel a little cheap? Maybe, but can you imagine how much longer we'd be waiting for the game to come out if they had to write two entirely different storylines with two entirely different sets of quests for people who were in 1.0 and people starting fresh in 2.0? Could you imagine the outcry they would get from that? You have to keep in mind as a demographic, we as roleplayers are somewhat insignificant. If they catered primarily to us they'd be catering to a small percent of their target market. The way I see things, they didn't come up with a storyline that throws all your RP from 1.0 into the garbage. They provided you a challenge to find a way around as not just RPers, but as writers. Sure, you could simply dismiss the whole thing and go about your life like it never happened, but in my opinion that only means you gave up on a challenge when other people are willing to roll with it and write their stories with the Lore SE provided. Honestly, I think the target of making everyone forget the 1.0 players in the story was so that whether you're just now starting, or you've been playing since the game launched in 2010, everyone starts with a sort of clean slate which means it's easier to believe everyone is on a level playing field come end game. The story of FFXIV is over, it's time to become the heroes of A Realm Reborn, not grumpy old vets talking about the glory days before Dalamud fell from the sky.
  20. No one knew they had it in 1.0 until you got far enough into the story to have it explained to you what it was. As far as the part you're not clear on...
  21. Well as Aysun said, everyone with the Echo was apparently immune to the amnesiac effects of the Calamity, which would also mean that all the PCs would be immune to them, so as far as RPers go unless you're playing a character who doesn't have the Echo (and tbh why would you?) then SE has already provided you the loophole to avoid not remembering your friends.
  22. While I hope I'm wrong, Yoshida said Arcanist wouldn't be released until launch so that means at the earliest I wouldn't expect it before Early Start.
  23. This is actually debatable, and we won't know for certain the full impact until release. While most characters forget you, not all do. I won't say more than that for fear or spoilers, just know the lore already provides loopholes in the setting.
