I suppose the problem's bigger on other servers, but since Balmung is already 'The RP server' (or as close as we have to an official one), I'm just going to assume that if someone has the tag on, aren't AFK, and aren't very obviously OOC (wearing speedos, jumping around, emote-spamming, etc), that it means they're IC and/or up for roleplay. I know that's what I'll be doing. At worst I'll get told to bugger off.

Only one, really: Have fun RPing. Seriously. I've sat through so much RP that just wasn't my speed for the sake of being polite, or showing solidarity, or supporting an aquaintance, only to never have anyone return the favor and cater to my taste a bit. It really soured me on a lot of things.

How do you feel about drawing a Miqo'te or Au Ra? I'd definitely love to steal a spot! I am absolutely up for drawing either! ^^

Ohh, what a neat idea for a thread! Theronault's hands are just as spindly as the rest of him; his fingers are just a little too long and a little too thin. He has, on closer examination, multiple very small, shallow scars around his fingers (thumbs and index-fingers particularly) from accidents with working knives, most likely while cutting herbs. On his right index finger, he almost always wears a silver ring with a small piece of jade in it. On his left middle-finger, a slightly more crude-looking metal ring with a piece of amber. Other rings are switched out as he finds he needs them for various magical/superstitious purposes, but those two remain at almost all times. His nails are either squeaky clean or completely full of dirt. There is no in-between. They're cut short, practicality obviously chosen above vanity here.

... you RP a herbalist sort of character, realise you know nothing about that, and your "quick research so you can pull it off" turns into a (so far) 10 pages long document on the healing lore of herbs and gems/minerals, particularly those actually found ingame. ... you draw your character(s) at least 50 times (if you can draw), because dang it, they don't look perfect yet. ... you have a folder of 220+ images labled 'aesthetics' that you don't really use for anything other than browsing through when considering character-related things. ... you make up about a dozen random little stories about crap that happened to your character growing up, because it makes them a bit more three-dimensional to you. Not important little stories, nothing that's written down anywhere. But you know that when Bob The Miqo'te was 8, he slipped on a rock, hit his head, and had to spend a week in bed.

Oh, I can answer that. It multiplies them tenfold.

What's everyone's approaches to the game-mechanics? I'm thinking spells especially. I come from ESO, where pretty much everyone agreed that gameplay and lore were strictly seperate; the classes didn't exist in the lore, nor many of the spells, and as such we usually ran on logic and what was established in in-game books. I enjoyed that quite a lot, as I felt it left a lot up to the imaginations of the players and allowed for a lot of creative writing. By now, I've seen more than a few times someone casting 'medica' or 'cure' IC, and I'll admit, it's a bit jarring to me, simply because I'm so used to mechanics not playing a part in RP. I've personally been running mostly on the old habit of "Character casts an unnamed spell and descriptions of magic happen" rather than "Character casts Cure." Is there a general preference around the community? I know what my own preference is, but I also don't want to make a complete arse of myself, should I ever try my hand at some more serious healing-RP.

So you're a WHM, and you happen to be in a group full of new people for your Castrum Meridianum run. Do NOT: - Run in front of the group without the tank(s) - Explain the cannons after they've been destroyed - Bum around in cleric stance 90% of the time and expect the newbie WHM to heal the entire party, and you, because "I'm doing dps" - Seriously. The guy let himself die and told me to heal/res him. More than once. Surely the dps of a WHM can't be that precious. I just, ech. I don't know if that's supposed to be an easy trial, and he was trying to explain things at some points, but oh my god. I've never been so stressed healing anything. This was worse than the time I tried to do Titan with lag. If you're that eager to speedrun, just drop group and hope the queue puts you with non-noobs.

As usual, an overarching problem for me when I do anything is my tendency to get completely lost in making something look pretty to the point where I forget about doing anything actually important. Predictably, I have a fairly lovely looking page with not a whole lot of actual text. As for specific problems, I'm lousy at coding. I've only ever done some light bbcode before, and this was quite a pain in the rear, even with the help of a savy friend.
