Meta-gaming, using OOC knowledge IC, how do you deal with it?
Kang replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
However you approach it, it's important that you have this conversation. The longer that it goes on without being confronted, the more that "P" will get the impression that it's acceptable and nothing is wrong. Also, meta-gaming is frowned upon in general (though there's no real universal rules on RP), so letting him know that he's meta-gaming will improve his own RP abilities in the long run. I've had to clarify things OOCly to friends in the past, and they have to me. No one likes to do it, because they're afraid that someone is going to get upset, and they also feel like it prevents the RP from flowing naturally. But it's something that needs to be done in order for everyone to feel more comfortable in the end. If he's your friend, he should be able to understand. If he gets upset, that says more about him. But the meta-gaming needs to be addressed in some manner. If you're looking for a way to bring it up, I would just ask him that you're curious how his character knew this kind of information. Put him in a situation where he either can't find an answer, or at least a satisfactory one. I would then bring up your concerns. Start it off with something like "I'm concerned that" or "I'm worried that" so that he doesn't think you're chastising him, but rather that you're bringing a concern of yours. OOC communication and clarity is an unfun, but often necessary asset for long lasting and comfortable RP- 19 replies

While I prefer a plot to flow naturally, I can understand the appeal of pre-arrange romantic RP for those that want it. It's just like how some of us like romance novels, movies, or romantic comedies. And if you're in a situation where you know that that is what you want and intend for things to go, it's good to be clear and upfront about your priorities, rather than sitting and hoping for things to happen. Much like dating in real life.

I used it once for when I switched main Jobs. Since I didn't know much about POTD's lore, I headcanoned that the aetherpool weapons were manifestations from the wielder's own mind and soul. To my character's surprise, the weapon that formed was not the one that he expected. He accepted this and eventually converted to the use of the weapon style that resembled his aetherpool weapon outside of the dungeon. The enemies that spawn when you stand in one area too long definitely did not make this easy though. So I likely won't be doing much more POTD RP when actually in the dungeon.

Hi there! I'm new to Mateus and would be interested in joining, along with two other friends. But I was hoping to ask a few questions first. Is there anyone that can I send a message to? Or should I just post them here?

Just wanted to mention how much I appreciate that discussion about an alternate RP server is actually happening. I have a few friends that have expressed interest in trying out FFXIV as a potential new MMO home. Most of them are RPers. In fact, RP is a primary interest for many of them and a dealbreaker if there is nothing to be found. SE's announcement to lock Balmung is a seriously blow to those players, and players like them. And it doesn't look like SE has any plans to address the RP community and their concerns (otherwise, they would've done so when they first made this announcement). So it's up to the RP community to come together and pick up the slack. I know that there's been attempts in the past to form communities outside of Balmung. But since SE didn't really force our hand before, those small attempts wouldn't gain too much traction. Now that SE HAS forced our hand, hopefully we finally can come together and build a new and semi-large community. The important part is getting the community to start talking about it (in all social hubs where the Balmung RP community is present) and keep talking about it. And hopefully a consensus is formed. I have no vote in this. Whatever server the community agrees on is the server I will bring my friends to. Simple as that. What's important is that the community DOES agree on a server and makes it "official" enough so that these kinds of players know where to go and will continue to know where to go after this thread has long disappeared. Otherwise, those players will simply have nowhere to go.

People that go out of their way to be different, just for the sake of being different, and criticize other people for liking something that's popular, are every bit as bad as people that go out of their way to jump on bandwagons and criticize other people for being different. In fact, they might just be a little worse IMO because they honestly should know better. I'll give an example. I play Star Wars: The Old Republic. My main is a Jedi Knight. Heroic, soft-spoken, good with a lightsaber, has an evil Sith twin brother. My friend plays a Smuggler, born on Corellia (for those who aren't familiar with Star Wars, the famous Smuggler from the movies, Han Solo, was also born on Corellia), is a hotshot pilot and a major flirt. Both of our characters share several common tropes with our classes and archetypes. We've met a few people in our time with the game who would constantly shrug off certain ideas for stories or characters because "blah blah someone's done it before." These people would go out of their way with characters and even styles of dress, just for the sake of being "original" in their minds. As much as my friend and I will try to add unique flairs to our characters when we can, we will not apologize for how "unoriginal" or overplayed our characters are. For two reasons: A) Part of SW's charm from the beginning was its tribute to familiar archetypes. And more importantly: B) These are the characters that speak to us the most. They're the ones we are the most passionate about playing and writing about, and we like them just the way they are. Whether other people play similar characters doesn't change that fact. tl;dr Play what you like. If Miqo'te is the race that makes the most sense to you then that's what you should be playing. What matters is you've created the character that can bring the passion of RPing out of you the most. If someone wants to criticize you for being unoriginal, they're probably not someone you want to be RPing with anyway.

Although I'm not at the point right now where I have enough time to roll another new character (maybe sometime in the future), I actually do know 1-2 RPers from another game who have characters on Faerie and would be interested to hear about potential RP on that server. One of them is named Kaerri Rainshadow if you want to get in contact with her. She also has an alt named Cerisanthe Caponael

Yeah. I'd imagine that when I first start venturing in the RP world, my character will likely just be a guy who simply knows how to punch and kick at first. Anything beyond that, I plan to just wait and see what direction my character goes in. For one example, in SWTOR at the end of the Jedi Knight class stories, you can potentially become a Jedi Master. Even if I reached this title in-game, my IC character remained a Knight because I wanted to play that progression out (and young Masters were unheard of). We also had people that played a Jedi in-game but weren't a Jedi at all ICly. They were mercenaries who fought with swords (you can glamour swords instead of lightsabers) and we'd just look the other way when they'd do Jedi-like abilities if we RPed through a group mission and they did their rotation. I also know that if I decide I want to associate with a significant faction, that comes with its own set of risks. That's why if I decided to roll a Dragoon, they'd likely just be a guy who fights with a lance ICly. Perhaps what I might go with is he ends up mostly a Pugilist. Though playing the role of "hired muscle that collects debts" might not sit well with him and I could see him giving up that life, eventually aspiring for something else. A Fist of Rhalgr student is a possibility, but I'll see what happens first. If I do bring him along that path, while NPC masters are a possibility, if there's plenty of PC masters that would be interested, I might take advantage of that opportunity. That also creates much greater possibilities and potential to work with IMO. Though I know that I don't have to incorporate the tribe lore if I don't wish to, doing so gives me something to work with. Since sometimes, having too many options makes it challenging to find direction (it's why I find myself preferring linear and theme park games over sandbox a lot of the time). Perhaps one thing I can do with the "failed Marauder" plot is that when he gets attacked in Thanalan and loses his axe, his attackers had assumed he was a pirate at the time. Definitely starting to build some foundation here!

Yeah. After reading on the lore of many of the jobs, the impression I got was that the majority of the jobs, as opposed to the classes, had a pseudo "Luke Skywalker Jedi" vibe where "the order is nearly or completely extinct and becoming one is nearly impossible. But hey, you're the WoL and you're special so have at it." I wouldn't be surprised if my character ends up also just being a Pugilist or some sort of hand-to-hand combatant and is only an OOC Monk through in-game mechanics. Amazing feats like unlocking chakra is something that I'd look into later down the line after my character has gone through some development. I don't have any intention of being an uber powerful character, especially right off the bat, unless it fits the development (one of my SWTOR characters did but that's only because it developed naturally in the story. My other alts were average at best). Once I've played through the Monk storyline, I'll likely have a better understanding and a desire of where I want to go. Prior to that, he's pretty much just a guy who owns a pair of brass knuckles and knows how to kick.

Hey all! I thought I'd post in here to ask if my character concept made sense within the lore, since I know very little about FFXIV lore. Before I start, I should give a background explanation. I knew for certain, first off, that I wanted to play a Monk in-game (meaning that if RPing a Monk didn't make sense, I'd at least want to RP a martial artist character). I've typically played Human races in most games so I was originally playing a male Hyur. However, after a while, it just felt to me that the Monk's animations and style complimented the Miqo'te better (nothing wrong if you disagree. It's just a personal preference thing). So I figured that I'd roll a male Miqo'te Monk. After reading up on the Miqo'te lore, I began to finally have some semblance of a character backstory and motivation, which is something that I struggled to find before. So here's what I had. Note that there's a number of details that I either hadn't yet decided on or I plan on just making up at they come along. Also, I understand that my concept is pretty generic and unoriginal but originality isn't something that I usually go out of my way to accomplish, as long as the concept is fun and interests me. K'doh Tia is a Seeker of the Sun male Miqo'te. To my understanding, the Nuhn is responsible for producing offspring while the rest of the males are Tia. In order for a Tia to become a Nuhn, he must defeat the Nuhn in combat or leave the tribe and start his own. K'doh is a Tia who has since left his tribe and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. I haven't yet decided his exact reason for leaving. It could be a personal decision or perhaps he was banished and asked to leave. It could also just be a temporary departure with the intention of one day returning (which he may or may not change his mind on). He also may or may not have challenged the Nuhn and lost, depending on his own ambition and personal desires. Though either way, I do see him having an inferiority complex with the Nuhn of his tribe and perhaps being weak early on in his life, only to later grow into a stronger combatant. I'd read somewhere that the original settlers landed on Limsa Lominsa and settled there. In that case, perhaps K'doh's tribe was originally from there and his original fighting background was Marauder (to also explain my leveling Marauder to unlock Mercy Stroke for gameplay reasons). However, he was rather incompetent with the axe and struggled with it. He later lost his axe or it was destroyed when he arrived in Thanalan. One way or another, he eventually learned how to fight with his bare fists. Either from him finding the Pugilist's Guild or he was saved by a Pugilist after being mugged by a group of bandits who destroyed his axe. He was likely also too poor at the time to afford a weapon. Over time, he decided that hand-to-hand combat was his true fighting style (especially when chakra gets involved further down in his development). On a random cosmetic note, he currently has dark brown/black hair. Is it normal for Seekers to have this hair colour? I don't see many Seekers with it. Which is ironic since many ethnic groups IRL with that hair colour originated from warmer climates. That's all I had for now. Suggestions? Comments? Does his story check out? P.S. As I typed this, I was reading some more and it turns out that the Limsa Lominsa settlers have modernized themselves and do not follow the tribe traditions for the most part. In contrast, there exists settlers in Sagolii Desert who do abide by these traditions. In which case, I could potentially have him originate from Sagolii Desert with much of the same backstory but with the Marauder background removed.

I'll be transferring a fresh new character that I recently made on another server. I figured that might've been a bit confusing with the way I worded. Though I've pretty much accepted at this point that transferring a character is the only way possible. The two main reasons I'm transferring a fresh character instead of the one I'm currently playing were so that I can still have something to play with my non-RP/non-Balmung friends if they decide to resub. The other reason was that I wanted to change my character's name and race and that's a lot of coin to drop, on top of the transfer. The only annoying part is I'll have to re-grind, though I'll have the added benefit of running through the storyline again with a slightly better understanding. Thanks for the greetings, everyone!

Hi all! As my insomnia currently refuses to let me sleep, I thought I'd kill the time by finally making an introductory post. My previous RP experience has actually been only with Star Wars games. Both Jedi Academy and SWTOR. So this is my first venture in RPing in either FF or pseudo-medieval fantasy. I'm a total geek for cheesy kung fu movies and martial arts. You could say I'm an action junkie. I grew up watching Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies. Power Rangers was my favourite show and my other big videogame niche is fighting games. As you can probably guess, the FFXIV Job I'm most drawn to is the Monk. (Samurai would be cool too but not until it happens of course) My previous FFXIV experience consisted of playing for about 2-3 months, leveling mostly by myself a Paladin until lvl 50 with 2 other friends who have since left the game. I stopped playing for a while after SWTOR released a new expansion though I expect to be playing more of FFXIV again now. I think a big problem (other than fitting my FFXIV time in with 3 other hobbies, school, work and some semblance of a social life), was that I failed to create a character that I was emotionally involved with. But I think my new concept will definitely interest me more. I haven't yet actually RPed within FFXIV since I don't have a Balmung character and my server has no RP that I'm aware of. But I think it's time that I finally drop the coin on a Balmung character. My biggest challenge will likely be the lore. RPing in SWTOR was easier because Star Wars lore has been well established. Whereas FFXIV is a fresh and new universe so there's a lot to take in. That and I honestly had a lot of trouble following the main story during my first playthrough (it's tough after playing a fully voiced MMO with modern dialogue). Whenever I end up on Balmung, I plan on re-rolling a fresh new character and hopefully I'll better understand the plot. I also plan on making a post in the Character Workshop to see if my character concept works. Looking forward to meeting, adventuring and telling great stories with you all!
