What you did seems an honest mistake. Because it works a lot with timing of songs and is scheduled in a way so it doesn't go over a lot of performance rp is heavily scheduled so they may have been taken off guard if they did not receive a lot of ooc coordination beforehand. It is generally considered polite to check in icly and oocly with the people running the venue if you are planning to perform. I don't think the person was trying to be rude to you but rather was trying to politely inform you in a tell what was not acceptable to avoid any embaressment on your part. That's my theory anyway, it's really surprising how many people assume the worst without talking and getting clarification, usually it's just a lost in translation issue. You're okay, being excited to rp is good, let me tell you a lot of our first forays into RP have been much worse (my first experience I jumped into a tavern and started Godmoding/powerplaying like I was hot shit). I encourage you not to give up, i know you might be nervous but once you find your footing role play can be a really enjoyable experience.

It really depends how well known you want your guy to be, or how important rather. It's not really unheard of for you to be some random commander or leader whose done some notable stuff but to still not be remarked upon in the general population and there have been several PCs that have selected such backgrounds without issue. As long as you are able to stick to the lore of your chosen military you can pretty much gloss over the rest.

Well a lot of roleplayers on Balmung has Mateus alts and vice versa. Balmung is the more established server because it became the unofficial rp server at the start of ARR. Mateus was sort of started as the unofficial overfill server. I am primarily Balmung so can't give an opinion but I've heard good things about both. My suggestion might be to make 1 character on each server and see which you like best if you don't already know someone on either server. I think it really comes down to the friends you meet.

Actually both are really good servers and thanks to Mateus and Balmung being on the same data center you can easily go to events on both.

First time experiences vary and I am happy you discovered an rp environment that you like and good friends. I do not feel it was entirely necessary that when you praise another community to backhand the one you are currently posting in so I guess it was a little disappointing that you felt it was needed. I personally often find myself regretting that there seems to be a relatively small number of those who roleplay heterosexual or even bi-sexual males because while relationship rp is something I would like to explore somewhat it's an incredibly small pool that I have noticed that is available. This was sort of my surprise than that someone who roleplays this type of character than was having difficulty finding meaningful interactions and I can only conclude that if you were behaving respectfully than your encounters within this game were met with the rare and occassional jerks that tend to populate every rp community. I am glad that you managed to find your niche with some great people however and hope you continue to be happy with BDO.

It's...possible? But you're also looking at what is native to the land. I mean generally the reason we don't all ride horses in Eorzea is because they're not native to the continent and vise versa with Othard, in fact to these respective cultures such mounts are really a foreign concept, Griffins tend to be native to Ala Mhigo in general and from what little we've been able to see developed for specifically that region. I usually go by a rule of thumb if you have to do a lot of additional world building to explain your character it's going to be harder to get others to go along with it because very few people are going to accept an info dump for why your character makes sense. -You're creating an entirely new tribe. -An isolated Tribe is aware of and trains Griffons -These Griffon-riding Au Ra were also aware and concerned about the political and revolutionary plight of Ala Mhigans in another continent and risked flying through Garlean airspace to reach Eorzea but could not be bothered to help out their neighboring Doma. -Or these Au Ra were always in Eorzea and somehow immigrated from Doma hundreds of years ago and went somewhat un-noticed in the space of time where Garleans were crushing any resistance. You need to also understand that the Autumn War (the time a hundred years ago when Ala Mhigo chose to outright invade the shroud) is a thing and there's still animosity today between Gridanians and Ala Mhigans, so much that Mhigan refugees were not actually allowed to settle in Gridania because the elementals were still pissed off about it. Now I'm not saying there is not a possible way for you to work this, I think though you might be served better taking a low impact approach with your idea. You say you want your Au Ra Raen to be a Griffin rider? Well we're assuming most of the Griffin riders were decimated when the Garleans took over but maybe they're looking to rebuild, maybe your Raen has that sort of gumption to stand up and insist she learn how to ride griffins so here's some options. -She came across a wounded/abandoned griffin and befriended it. -She heard tales of Griffin riders of old and took it upon herself to try to rebuild the ranks. -She fought her way in for a spot among new recruits. -She was assigned to become a griffin rider as some sort of Grand Company Ala Mhigo initiative and her unit is a new experimental group of Griffin Riders being tested out as an add on to normal operations. As a disclaimer, you're free to rp however you wish, there's actually no restriction. I only want to give you these suggestions as a better workaround for what you want and what might create some interesting rp opportunities for your character in the world as this may encourage more people to play off the idea?

As far as I know the Griffin Riders would be strictly Ala Mhigan. That's not to say you couldn't find an excuse to have an Au Ra griffin rider (as evidenced by those rping dragoons there are several creative ways to get around this icly) But you might have a harder time of it if the story is not convincing to others.
