Considering how common elderly NPCs are and how often it is that, in the story, you run into people who were active in the Ala Mhigan defense forces during its fall (which was 20 years ago, making them at least mid-thirties or forties on the low end), I don't think that in Eorzean society there's a remarkable difference between characters who are, say, 25 and those who are 32. Some low-30s folk are going to be wise, old souls, but then so will some in their 20s. Keep in mind that this is a fully industrialized society that doesn't have the unsafe labor and feudal ownership that drew down life expectancy during similar eras in the real world, and has healing magic and medicine to bloat those same numbers. So if the life span for Lalafel is 100 years (it is), I would expect their life expectancy to be only a couple decades removed from that. Elezen wouldn't be far behind, and Hyur would be behind them a bit. My guess would put Hyur life expectancy around 70. This is all to say that I think that low to mid 30s would count as young, as much in-game as it does irl. You could make a case for 40s. In response to the OP, as Nau said, I do have a character in his 80s, but he's not likely to hobnob with the rich folk since he's more the wandering-hermit-in-the-woods type. I have another character who is wealthy and influential in Ul'dah, but is not elderly. I'd put him in his 30s somewhere.

new leadership Unity in A Realm Reborn [PvE]
Twinflame replied to synaesthetic's topic in Chronicles
That's fine. There's no threshold of stuff you have to know to app, and we'll take just about anyone -- from the highly experienced to the absolutely clueless -- that is looking for an inclusive community where you one can be whomever and whatever you choose. While Unity maintains its search for endgame-oriented players, there's also room in our FC and on our applications for social members who are more interested in casually enjoying the community and not necessarily looking for PvE progression in their near future. Unity is still overflowing with healers and has no shortage of tanks, so we still have great need of DD. Hoping to see some apps from those looking to put up big numbers! -
L is for Lulu.

I don't think the Wanderer's Shadow is really the same as what the Midnight Sanctuary would be. Duskwight might fit into it really well (mine certainly does) but it's not the same as a shelter for Duskwight and their culture specifically, like the planned DW Linshell is to be. Just because it wasn't up in beta doesn't mean it won't be come launch. Could just be that it fell through the cracks or that the person who meant to start it never got past all the bugs.

M is for Midgar!

Mm. Any meeting during early access or the first week of play I more than likely wouldn't be able to attend. As said, I'm moving, so I'm going to be preoccupied with driving several hundred miles and settling in to a new culture and climate. Any game-time I do have will be consumed trying to max out my monk so I can do endgame content with my FC. Don't wait on my account. Just know my situation in case the situations of others align at all. I could do that.
-
Yes! If you wanted to provide me your character's direct genealogy, I could definitely add that to the Duskwight tree I was working on. Go as crazy as you want on that. If I need any more information on a clan, I'll send a PM to that player. It's been awhile since I worked on this cause life happened, but I'll see if I can squeeze in some time before launch. I'm moving cross-country next week so yeah. x_x I think a meeting would be a great idea. And, I had been wondering about the Dusky LS myself. There were a couple LSes I had meant to join during open beta that I couldn't find, and this was one of them.

Warrior's also better at tanking many enemies simultaneously.

You mean Free Company. xP Unity is a free company. And an RP-friendly one at that, which I would recommend to anyone looking for endgame in ARR! The vast majority of us are roleplayers, and though Unity itself is not an IC organization, that's not keeping us from RPing. Yes I did mean that. Thanks. >_<
-
You best bet is probably to find and endgame Free Company and use Linkshells for your RP. This is what I'm doing. There are some RP free companies that want to try and balance PvE and RP, but there's really no reason to compound those things. I'm both a heavy PvEer and a heavy RPer, so what I did was get myself an RP-friendly Free Company that's going to be very serious about endgame (Unity) and then a Linkshell that's very serious about its RP (CRA). I've gotten a few other Linkshells since, because you can have up to eight, but I do know for sure right up front that both of my interests as a player will be taken care of.

The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?
Twinflame replied to hypatiala's topic in FFXIV Discussion
TERA's Nexus was just the stupidest fucking thing and was nothing like anything else in the game at all ever period. It was the most ridiculous rip-off of Rift events and didn't even look like them and broke the servers every three hours and as long as I live I hope I never see anything like it in video games ever again. That's all I have to say about that. <3 u all ~ -
To be completely honest, most of my characters will smell primarily like corn chips. You'll catch a hint of, say, pine and moss around D'aijeen (which is prolly the sexiest thing I've said about her to date), and Megs is going to smell like an unwashed old man.

My first reaction upon stepping into the beta general discussion forums: Most of my commentary on the beta forums: My subsequent return to the RPC forums: Just chilling here with you guys where everything's cool:

This epic masterpiece has truly changed my perspective on life! Or at least on FF.

Megiddo carries a long, thin piece of cloth into which words are stitched. The words themselves are secret, but for the purposes of this question, I'll be a bit meta and put the following poem upon it: Point Pablo Neruda No hay espacio más ancho que el dolor No hay universo como aquel que sangra (translated) There is no space wider than that of grief There is no universe like that which bleeds Is that too heavy-handed? lol

Oh em gee. I've had your Aion stuff on my MP3 player ever since Aion launched and it's still some of the best mood music I've got. I continue to play it frequently while doing mindless tasks in MMOs and such, right alongside the official FF piano collection albums. All of this is going on my playlist. It's great to see you doing this for FFXIV!

I tried to send a PM as well. I was going to contact another moderator in such case, but as long as there's this thread, I'll just drop mine in here: With all due respect, of course.

I didn't say anything even resembling that. I simply stated that 'foolish' is not a power word and that you are aggressively overusing them. Yes, we do disagree on that. Also, that's a pretty passive-agressive statement you just made. Maybe y'all should just leave the FC and LS names out of it. We're all members of a lot of things, including the RPC, the ARR playerbase, and humankind. I would like to be involved in this. Seconded.

It was accidental. I was trying to talk about someone else and switched up the names. Mahbad.

I'm actually not taking sides. I have my stance and I have expressed it in other venues. I don't accept their culture, personally, but I understand where they are coming from. And I personally find it frustrating as well. (I didn't approve of a lot of the things that have gone on in my life due to prejudice against my race and orientation, but I understand why it exists. Understanding =/= approval or acceptance in any form.) My issue is with everyone focusing their energy on arguing with each other when that passion should be directed to SE. I think Reppu has valid points as well as Unity. Do I agree more with one than the other? No. I think both could take from each other. The Japanese traditionalism is frustrating, upsetting, and not okay, but it is not the same as the religious extremism and execution of homosexuals in other countries. That is an analogy I cannot get behind. And I'm willing to admit I was wrong in my interpretation of your intention with mentioning Rosa Parks. I don't believe there are sides in here, so I wouldn't really accuse you of being on one. Apologies if I said something that might have implied such. I think the conversation going on in here is kind of ridiculous at this point, since it's mostly people who say they agree with us telling us that we are making good arguments in the wrong way, which, how productive is that? Reppu has valid points dappled with disrespect and reactionary language, so it's not really going to get him anywhere. The crux is that certain folk seem to think this isn't worth getting angry about, or that discrimination hasn't happened yet. The mere suggestion that same-sex marriages might not happen portrays it as abnormal, so the discrimination has already occured. Incidentally, I'd ask that people stop lumping Unity together. Unity has a lot of members in this community and we all have different opinions, even on this. Our opinions are given individually. It's not like I think whats-his-name is speaking for all the Blades of Nald'Thal.

Of course they do. This is absolutely what your basic every-day casual oppression sounds like. It is polite and calm because it is normal, and the person delivering it does not think they are being discriminatory. Nobody thinks Yoshi is going out of his way to be a jerk or anything. It is what he's doing, though. 'Foolish' isn't a 'power word'. 'Toxic' and 'Unreasonable' are power words. Those ones are on you. You love power words. This is extremely misrepresentation. For one, no, I will in no way trust Yoshida. He is a business man out to get money. I don't think he's evil or a jerk or anything. I like him and what he does. I'm not going to trust him to not oppress, though, because he's already done so. I understand his culture and flatly deny it. I do not tolerate intolerance, nor will I tolerate the aspects of a foreign culture that cause intolerance. What, then, should I be tolerating in this situation? Yoshida's passive discrimination? To that I say: no.

So the bus-driver said to Miss Rosa Parks: "I acknowledge your request to not sit at the back of the bus, but just sit back there for now and once we're on the road and moving we'll see what the rest of the bus thinks and maybe you can move up to sit with everyone else later." And then Miss Rosa Parks sat in the back for the bus because she understood that her tacitly accepting oppression when it is polite is actually a kind of equality. That's exactly how it happened, right? But... Rosa Parks didn't curse out everyone on the bus and act like a banshee. She just refused with a high chin. Mind you, I'm on your side. I do RP gay characters. I am gay IRL. My only issue is that people are now attacking each other over this to the point where people who may not have an opinion are losing a lot of sympathy for our side. I think you're over-accepting Reppu's mischaracterizations of things that have been said in this thread. They is actually very little vitriol being directed at SE over this. Are we calling them discriminatory? Yes. We are calling them that because that is how they are behaving. Are we being sensitive to Japanese culture? No. We are not Japanese and cultural aspects that actively discriminate against us do not warrant our sensitivities. If we have to fight against Japanese cultural norms, then we will fight against Japanese cultural norms. Nobody in here, as far as I can see, has gone as far as to "act like a banshee". Instead we have been tactfully expressing our anger in ways that, while they no doubt exude frustration and offense, also communicate the source of that frustration and offense. Certain people in this thread are just misrepresenting these as somehow exceptionally vitriolic or vehement, which they are not. The oppressed have every right to be angry, and anyone trying to misrepresent that as "toxic" or unreasonable is completely in the wrong. And besides, they're responding to tone, which is not debate. May Rosa Parks analogy is not a response to the vitriolic accusations. It is applying Reppu's exact logic to an alternate situation. You cannot say that the logic applies to this situation but not that one, because that isn't how logic works. If Reppu's "respect the oppressor" logic doesn't work in all cases, then the logic is flawed.

Are you honestly trying to claim that implementing a marriage system without gender restrictions would somehow take substantially more time than implementing a marriage system with restrictions? The logic, I see none of it here; all I see are excuses being made to white knight passive discrimination. While it is a poor excuse? This is the kind of toxic behavior, the name calling of calling someone discriminatory toward gay marriage, that poisons the pool, when there's no sign of this even being remotely the truth. Do not take the 'hyper feminist' (when we all know humanists are the truly righteous, not feminists or 'masculinists') route of using powerful, unwarranted words against anyone who is not immediately following the absolute extreme of your argument. Wow. Look at all the accusations Reppu just made against Naunet about her accusations about the other guy. Following your own advice epic fail much lol Reppu also gets a star for using the word "feminist" as an insult. Good show, sir!
