Au Ra in plural is Au Ra?

Hey guys.

 

Sorry for this stupid, grammar-nazi thread, but I've noticed alot of people making this mistake. I've seen people around calling Au Ra in plural form for Auri, but that's the adjective form. To those who don't know what that means, it's when you describe something being of Au Ra origin.

 

For example:

"I found this Auri tome on the bookshelf."

 

Here's where I know this from:

"The adjectival form of Au Ra is Auri (Pronounced Ow-Ree), while the plural appears to be Au Ra."

Fernehalwes of the dev team have also mentioned that Auri is the adjective:

This one's a little special. Instead of just tacking an 'n' to the end of Ra, the term takes on a slight metamorphosis. Au Ra -> Auri (pronounced Ow-ree, rhymes with Maori). Example: "An Auri warrior can eat a whole turkey in a single sitting."

And the flavourtext as shown in the benchmark's character creation about the Au Ra, though it could be misunderstood, does indeed seem to me that it is an adjective and indeed not the plural form, as the plural is shown in the words "males and females":

 

 

And again on the Heavensward official page, showing the same flavourtext, but also for both clans, as the first words are "Auri creation", showing it as an adjective once more:

So yeah, anyways, just thought I'd point it out. I personally care alot about getting the correct grammar down, so if there's others like me out there, I hope this helps. ^^

Edit: The likely confusion comes from where he was misinterpreted.

I could have believed there was one that was explained to have plural as au ri from him. But apparently there was confusion from various sources saying what he said.

As for the other things, I now recall it in the flavor text.

Fernehalwes is Michael-Christopher Koji Fox, director of the NA localization and who works in close relations with the "lore team" and developer team. He is also the one responsible for Nald'Thal being 2 and not just one.

GE: Do the French and German teams have access to your English translations by the time that they are localizing so they can work off both the Japanese and the English?

 

MCKF: Actually, because we’re all doing this simultaneously, they might not have the access. They can all translate from Japanese. I think we must have the best people in the business because not only do they have their own native languages, and are translating from Japanese, but each one of them is fluent in English. All of our communication is done in English so they have three languages, they’re like diplomat level people translating games for Square Enix. They’re translating huge amounts of text, hundreds of thousands of characters within a small amount of time and getting this high quality, I love it.

 

To answer your question, we all translate at the same time, but we all translate what we want to first. We get our chunk of text and then do what we want to do. So if there’s something that I do first, they can look off the English and Japanese and then go off which one they want or maybe get inspiration from both. They might translate theirs from Japanese but then once the English is done maybe they’ll go back and brush it up. Because the French and German teams are looking at our text, they’ll give a lot of feedback too so they can give us ideas as well. It’s a really close knit team. A lot of games that are outsourced have little communication. Our team is all together, with the Development team. We can make sure things are consistent, we know what’s going on, we know why a dev member wrote a certain character this way and what his motivation is and what he wants us to convey – or what she wants us to convey because a lot of our writers are female. The game industry is very male driven, except for our writing team. Our writing team has a lot of female writers, it’s not that there aren’t any male writers, but compared to the other departments the writing team has  a really good balance.

So I guess this is also something that causes the confusion; from the official site. Interestingly it has Au Ra listed at the top. So yeah, inclined to believe that there is confusing, unintentional semi-conflicted text out there.

My apologies. At 4:40am my brain leaped from "auri..." to "auri?People use it cause Koji Fox told us about it. That's why it is plural" without actually thinking about the plural part.

All the plural forms I see are for the separate clans. Highlanders and Midlanders.. sea wolves.. Seekers and Keepers.

My husband has been looking back at me like I was a lunatic while I've been speaking out-loud for the past fifteen minutes, trying to figure this out.

 

Au Ra is, probably, the correct plural. Same rules as fish, sheep, moose, etc.

 

"Au Ras" looks, sounds, and feels cumbersome and awkward.

 

However... "Auri" sounds and feels acceptable when speaking out-loud. I have a suspicion that this will probably become a "technically incorrect but casually accepted" thing. Similar to how, in speech, saying "Mark dove into the deep end of the pool" would be accepted, but the correct way to say or write it is "Mark dived into the deep end of the pool". Could even possibly be covered by the same rule that turns "goose" into "geese".
