FINAL FANTASY 7 REMAKE

I'm pretty sure none of the games before VIII had space witches, but that didn't do anything to improve that game either.

 

Villainous ass pulls are a HALLMARK of the series I'll have you know!

 

Garland being the final boss of 1!? The Emperor literally conquering hell and becoming the devil!? ZEROMUS!?!?!?!?!?

The plot of 13 ain't bad.

 

It's just so good everyone thinks its bad.

 

The plot is pretty crap. "Hey, let's fight against this thing the whole time and

 

then turn around and do EXACTLY what they wanted us to do all along!

 

 

Further compounded by most of the lore being stuck in the little encyclopedia. I liked it in games like Star Ocean, where it explained some terms and expanded on the dialogue; but literally most of 13's essential world building lore was in the damned thing. I could only read short bits at a time because the horrible sound track would be in the background, and I didn't have the OH SO FUN endless corridor of emptiness to drown it out.

 

On topic:

 

I'd be surprised if they didn't add in anything from the Crapilation. Even if they didn't like it (which I'm pretty sure they do), they're going to want to tie it all together better. We just have to resign ourselves to that fact.

Specifically:

If it's a full remake, then of course, we want to take a different approach. If we actually just upgraded the visuals -- there'd be no need for me to direct it.

 

Hopefully they do it in an elegant way that actually makes sense, instead of just cramming it in whenever possible.

I forced myself through the corridor-fest and found a passable game beneath the layers of turds when the game opens up and you get to

Gran Pulse. Riding chocobos, hunting for monsters and rare items - that's what I play FF for.

The plot was pretty hokey and really should have ended with the first game. There was more than enough closure there.

 

I did enjoy the combat system - again, when it started becoming less handholdy and linear, which was way too late in the game. FF13-2 did a better job with this and was pretty enjoyable, but still suffered from a bad overall plot.

 

I couldn't play Lightning Returns for longer than a few hours. At least on PS3, it ran poorly, was a massive visual downgrade from both 13 and 13-2, and had an utterly ridiculous premise that makes the original 13's plot look like classic literature.

 

Thankfully, the updated demo of FFXV is extremely promising and, in my opinion, stands to redeem single player Final Fantasy after the crapfest that was the 13 trilogy.

Oddly enough, one of the most annoying things for me in FF13-2 was... the DLC. I got Gilgamesh and Ultros, more or less expecting to be able to use them as my allies from the onset or within a reasonable time-frame. Instead, I find out that not only do you have to fight them to get them - which requires specific combinations of monsters used in a certain order (especially in the case of Greg) - even if you manage to pull it off, you only have a CHANCE of getting the crystal that lets you summon them. If anything at all.

 

All that work to get a chance at the privilege to get to use the DLC monsters you paid for in... the last battle? Mowing over enemies you already horrendously out-leveled in the process of trying of getting them? It just struck me as very poorly implemented.

 

I can only hope any additional content in the FF7 remake - including DLC if any - is a bit better handled than that nonsense.

I hear you. The only DLC I bought was the Sazh stuff, because he was my favorite character in the original game. I wasn't prepared for the fact that it was really just a casino grind. :|

Final Fantasy XIII is complete garbage and they need to stop slapping the number XIII on their games if they ever want me to give them any money ever again. From it's terrible characters to it's completely uninteresting story, I had a hard time staying awake while forcing myself to finish this game. Then there is the 20 hour long hallway, which no one can possibly defend without saying "but it gets better after 20 hours!" And finally the lame battle system that has you just mashing X as your characters do everything for you. This game was an insult to the Final Fantasy series, and the only thing I liked about it was the comic relief character with a giant afro and a bird living in his hair. He was the only interesting character in the game.

 

And it only gets more insulting to the series as they pumped out more crap from this universe. The plots just get worse and worse. I'll tell you what good came out of it though. I used to hate FFVIII. Now I have a whole new appreciation for that game. It was my least favorite for years, but at least it looked like Final Fantasy, it sounded like Final Fantasy, and played like Final Fantasy. It had its share of difficulties that made it one of my least favorite in the series, but at least it still has the heart of a Final Fantasy game. FFXIII does none of these things. There is so little to like about FFXIII unless all you care about is pretty graphics.

 

 

Sorry, I know we are getting off topic. But the truth is that I worry about what kind of battle system SE will implement into the FFVII remake. I'm pretty sure most FFVII fans don't want it changed too much, but you know it's going to be completely different. It's also going to use a much more modern style of FF storytelling, which might be a good thing, or it might make the game feel foreign. You know we aren't going to see those familiar blue text boxes anymore. (or whatever color you changed them to) I guess I'm just worried that SE it going to take the game much farther past the kind of remake that the fans wanted.

Not exactly my point - just that FFVII was a very radical departure from what came before (Without knowing what to do, it really feels like you're stuck in Midgar for QUITE some time. It's not 20 hours, not by a long shot, but it was significant enough that I really didn't care for the game at the time), same with XIII. An argument can be made that XIII failed where VII succeeded, but to me, personally, it didn't.

 

XIII exists, and when I'll play it I'll play it with an open mind and play it thoroughly.

 

Like I'll play the remake with one even though I really, really do not like VII.

You know, I just realized something.

 

I have been here before. So many goddamn times, even. More times than one can deem necessary to stay sane. If each exposure to this same argument or breed of argument, even, were equal to a slight dip of my toe in radioactive goop, I would either have immense toe-based superpowers or terminal cancer. I would be emitting so much radiation my house would have to have walls made of lead.

 

I honestly thought I would escape it, I really did, but today, you proved I never will. How did you accomplish this task?

 

By somehow derailing a discussion about FFVII into another copy/paste "Let's riff on FFXIII" waste of time! A game that came out six years ago and whose subsequent sequels became just as relevant two years ago!

 

Not only is it old enough that veterans of the constant fanbase forum-centered warfare such as myself cannot resist a mighty eyeroll in the face of such absurdity, but the fact that you took a game that has nothing to do with FF7 and decided to deface it further after everyone else did a hundred times over is just awe-inspiring. I applaud you. Well done. All kneel before you, your awfulness, you are beating a dead horse-no, you dug it up, and now you're beating up its skeleton!

 

And thus, I realize, there will be no civil discussion. I know exactly how this is going to play out. It'll all be more of the same: The noise. THE NOISE.

Blatant nostalgia-bias veiled under what sounds like legitimate complaints. Complaints that don't even try to hide the nostalgia bias! Comments from people who barely played the game before hopping on the bandwagon! People who refused to play anything past the SNES era long before FFXIII ever came out! And the ignorant comments about SE sticking to the Lightning Trilogy when they are clearly moving past it! Beatings of dead horses! Guttural wailing for the supposed "good ol' days" of FF that never existed! Damning a fucking franchise because of pettiness!

I hate that. Of course we can have them lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy and then jumping back. There's literally nothing preventing it, except Square's obsession with real-time, westernized action-combat.

It's a video game. It is, by it's very nature, abstract.

I have to agree with Nomura on this. We have the original. In fact, we have a more accessible version of the original. The man is anticipating gamers like myself who aren't going to shell out 60 fucking dollars for an HD version of the same goddamn game.

 

My Remake Policy: Either shake it up a bit, or you're wasting my time.

It became cool to hate 7 over the years, but personally, I wasn't impressed by the story in the older, supposedly superior games like 6. It's not my favorite RPG ever, but I still think it was a solid game, for being very primitive, poorly translated and essentially having some parts incomplete.

 

Btw, Sephiroth is a Kefka with depth. Feel free to impale me now.

I just miss the old turn-based ATB systems. And while no, it may not hurt the game in any way, it doesn't necessarily improve it either. But ignore me, I'm just a crotchety old man (spurious; I'm 27) who doesn't like change.

If it wasn't for the Woosley translation Kefka would be extremely forgettable. That team salvaged that villain from the shadows of utter obscurity to such an extent you can still hear old school fans yelling out son of a submariner and all the other quotes that are simply not present in the Japanese script.

 

Sephiroth had an extremely shoddy translation that ensured he had no personality whatsoever other than BROODING. Which would have been fine if it wasn't for the fact that you already had two party members doing the exact same fucking thing.

 

Then again FF villains have never really been well-developed when I think about it. Most of their motivations are boiled down to "they're evil, kill 'em".
