Due to the holidays coming up, and the sheer amount of events already planned on Balmung, the Ala Mhigan Resistance is taking a temporary break from running events!

Worry not, as soon the holidays are over, we will be back with our own Winter’s Knell Celebration!!

RMFEwsK.png

We will be releasing more information soon regarding this event, so keep an eye out for that! There’s a possibility we might need some performers here and there after all. But more on that when we post more information regarding the event!

With this post we also once more like to thank everyone for their aid, performances, speeches and simply attending our events. Without you all we couldn’t make these events as lovely as they are!

Ala Mhigan Resistance Discord

Due to the frequent request of having our own Discord, from this point on the Resistance LS will have their own Discord as well! You don’t have to be a part of the Resistance LS in game. We know LS slots are limited after all, and hope this is a suitable work around for people. However you are still required to use your in game name of one of characters in the Discord regardless if you join!

How to join? Rules? We got you covered!

Welcome to the Resistance Discord! Some simple rules to start off with.

  • Rule 1: Keep hot topics out of the chat. We are a roleplay community, not a social medium platform.

  • Rule 2: Don’t bring your FC or other LS drama in here.

  • Rule 3: If you have an issue, bring it up with one of the Admins.

  • Rule 4: NSFW material goes into the Sinbin. This also counts for non-sexual, but overly violent material ect. Posts and images both. Think of people who might be at work. This also goes without saying only people above 18 are allowed in this channel.

  • Rule 5: We expect you to use your character’s ingame name on this Discord. This will be strictly enforced to avoid confusion, because it happens people share the same online handles! However, you may use your character name + your online handle. ‘Avelyn Firestone’ is still highly preferred, but you may also add your online handle as 'Avelyn Firestone (Ave)’.

  • Rule 6: Be Excellent To One Another.

If you do not agree or adhere to these rules, you will be asked to leave, or be removed. Thank you.

Admins:Avelyn Firestone, Adun Blackblade, Shana Strongarm.

Do you wish to be invited? Give one of the Admins a poke in game, or contact the Ala Mhigan Resistance LS page, or poke Avelyn on the RPC, so they can hand you out an invite. Once more, you don’t have to be a part of the Resistance LS ingame. Remind to change your nickname on the Discord to your in game character name though!

Feel free to add your character to the Character List Text Channel, so people can find you easier for Ala Mhigan themed Roleplay! Keep things short and to the point though.

Please post things in the appropriate channels.

This is off course completely OPTIONAL! You don’t have to join if you don’t want to!

Winter’s Knell - An Ala Mhigan Festival - Lore

tumblr_inline_oiiwvxzkIg1trt837_540.png

Given the next upcoming event  with the Ala Mhigan Resistance Linkshell regarding this Ala Mhigan Festival (more info to come soon on that), we figured it would be handy to give people some information on this lost 1.0 festival! Lore sadly enough got lost with the Calamity, but thankfully there’s still some, if not most, stored in the depths of the internet.

If you want to read more onto the celebration yourself? We got links provided. (Also as usual a shout out for @mirkemenagerie / Sounsyy for providing said links ♥ )

But for the sake of easiness, a summary below!

What is Winter’s Knell? Is it just Ala Mhigan Starlight?

Winter’s Knell is an old Ala Mhigan festival to usher in the winter. It speaks of the Gods of Winter. It probably, just like Ishgard still has some old traditions left, is still something remaining from their Pagan pre-Twelve worshipping days. It has nothing to do with the Ishgardian tale of Temple Knights and orphans, that we know for certain.

So what does Winter’s Knell focus onto? The cycle of life actually! They believe winter and the cold are an essential part of life as well.

Whereas it is seen by outsiders as strange to surround a festival around the cold and death to a degree, in truth Ala Mhigans don’t see it that way. The Ala Mhigans celebrate it in a rather jolly way and even take the time to pray for the well-being over their loved ones. They after all see the winter (and even death) as a necessity of life. Halting that cycle would after all cause more damage then it does good. Even non-Ala Mhigans, such as the botany guild and the conjurers, see the importance of having a winter as well.

tumblr_inline_oiiwf5kTby1trt837_540.png

So has Starlight has absolutely nothing to do with Ala Mhigans?

Hard to say! Starlight originates from Ishgard, that is for certain. Winter’s Knell was a strange and unheard of festival to the rest of Eorzea when these quests were introduced, so it’s probably safe to say Winter’s Knell is not celebrated by anyone else but the Ala Mhigans because they simply did not know of it to begin with.

However what is a logical possibility that due to the Ala Mhigans being actively in touch with the rest of Eorzea ‘thanks’ to their refugee status, that some Starlight traditions might have seeped their way into Ala Mhigan culture in the more recent years. But before Garlemald took Gyr Abania over? Doubtful. But cultures and festivals do spread when nations trade and travel between one another, so that is something to keep in mind for certain.

Only thing we can safely say Winter’s Knell has nothing to do with Ishgard’s Temple Knights and orphans story, nor with Nymeia for that matter (in fact, we imagine mentioning Nymeia is about to ruin quite a few (older) Ala Mhigan’s festive spirits in current days: but don’t take that as fact). It is purely a festival to usher in the winter!

Our best guess? The two might have intertwined over time, they might have not. Maybe they did to some degree. Only thing we know right now that Winter’s Knell and Starlight appear to have different origins.

tumblr_inline_oiiwkppZmz1trt837_540.png

How is it celebrated?

We don’t know all of it, merely a few aspect of it. There’s is more to it then we know at this current point and time.

There’s a brief mention of praying for loved ones, but they don’t really shed more light onto how it is done.

We also don’t know more on the Gods of Winter, beyond them being Gods of Winter.

But one of the things we do know a bit more in detail involves building a giant snowman named Father Frost! We imagine back in Ala Mhigo it was a lot more impressive. The snowman in 1.0 was big but not extremely huge by any means.  But yes, Father Frost is a huge part of the celebration.

More on Father Frost below!

Building Father Frost

So you think Ala Mhigans do this the normal way? Oh no. They hurl snowballs all together at a reasonable sized snowman to make it bigger, children and adults alike, while chanting “Winter is coming” at Father Frost. Yes, you heard that right. You will have your excuse to hurl snowballs at a snowman while shouting Game of Thrones quotes. Insert mandatory Frozen and Game of Thrones jokes here.

It also had a bucket on its head for a hat, but we can safely assume that back in Gyr Abania his head probably got graced with something better than a simple cheap red bucket.

In any case, building Father Frost together is meant to be a jolly occasion for the people involved, and individuals are HIGHLY encourage to hurl snowballs and chant “Winter is coming!” towards the snowman.

They did have some trouble building it back in 1.0 due to the lack of snow. But they used ice shards to ensure the snowman didn’t just vanish instantly and also used them to conjure snowballs out of them.

tumblr_inline_oiiwi7oIqO1trt837_540.png

The Heart of Winter - Ice Elemental trapped in Stone

Father Frost isn’t completely with an Ala Mhigan relic placed onto its chest, called the Heart of Winter as seen on the screenshot above. The gem is considered to be very precious relic from Ala Mhigo. The Ala Mhigan quest NPC claims it has been around for dynasties. Getting the relic back in the hands of the Ala Mhigans in the Shroud was a troublesome affair. They had to smuggle it out of Garlean occupied Gyr Abania at the cost of many lives.

But that isn’t all! The Ala Mhigan Relic turned out appeared to have an Elemental trapped within in! It did break free. When it was defeated by the Adventurer the Elemental did in turn promise to bring winter again to the Shroud, claiming that the snow and cold has to be a part of harmony the Shroud needs. And worry not, the relic was safely return to the Ala Mhigans albeit without it’s shine.

Also that leaves us to question how did the Ala Mhigans get a stone with an Elemental in it? Do/did they have the knowledge to do such? Could the Ala Mhigans Shamans have something to do with it? Questions, questions (who will probably never have answered)! But back on topic.

Are gifts a part of Winter’s Knell?

If giving presents is a thing what belongs to Winter’s Knell? We really can’t tell for certain either. It seems something more connected to Starlight than Winter’s Knell. At the end of the Questline you do get something gifted, but it isn’t certain whether the gift comes due it being connection to Winter’s Knell, or it just merely being a sign of gratitude.

It is however said they do pray for well-being of their loved ones. Who knows that involves giving them protective talismans or something along the line. And once more, Starlight and Winter’s Knell might have started to mix together at this point. We don’t know what is right or wrong, so roleplay whatever you think what fits with your character!

tumblr_inline_oiivxaWmwJ1trt837_540.png

But uhm, aren’t they are war with Garlemald? Don’t they have better things to do?

The festival was organised to not only to give the Ala Mhigans some well-deserved joy and take their mind of their troubles for a little while by engaging into a cultural festival from their homelands, but also to smooth things over between non-Ala Mhigans and Ala Mhigans alike!

Next to that it is also of importance to point out at the time of the 1.0 quest, the conjurers of Gridania were getting desperate that the winter would not come, to the point they allowed and helped the Ala Mhigans to organise their festival in the hopes of ushering in winter.

Even at wartimes people still celebrate their festivals and the Ala Mhigans are no exception.

Can a Non-Ala Mhigans can participate as well?

Totally!

However in the quests outsiders do find it rather strange, and no one ever heard of it before. But plenty of folk are happy enough to aid them and partake in the celebrations.

So if you want to just see a heap of Ala Mhigans throwing snowballs at a giant snowman, or want to participate in the madness? They in fact encourage it! The festival was celebrated to usher in the winter, but also to smooth things over with the locals in the Shroud. So yes, outsiders would be welcomed at such an open and public event.

tumblr_inline_oij1wtiMEL1trt837_540.png

Last Words

But ultimately we don’t know what everything entails regarding the festival beyond what we got! So please by all means, go wild and enjoy your Ala Mhigan winter festival in the way you think is fitting. And if all else fails? Just blame it on your Ala Mhigan’s clan having their own little rituals and means added to it in the ye olde days.

I am kind of newly returned to FFXIV after not having played since, well, since pre-ARR to be honest, I'm looking to get involved in things again, and since my character is Ala Mhigan and definitely part of the resistance, this seems like it might be a decent fit for her!

I'll poke you in game.

Hey there! Please contact me in game for an invite! :)

Also...

Management Update #N7!

tumblr_inline_ojodawjPSk1trt837_540.png

Another small request coming from the management regarding our events!

We had hoped this goes without saying, but now with how much the community has grown we felt the need to clarify this just to be sure.

Conflict at the Resistance events? Such as but not limited to: Arguing, punching your fellow Ala Mhigan over a dispute, being cranky and drawing attention due to it, disagreeing with people ect.

Awesome! Go ahead.

tumblr_inline_ojoddg47Hs1trt837_540.png

Disturbing events on purpose? Such as but not limited to: Garlean spies outing themselves and thinking they will get away with it, purposely trying to kill people at the events, trolling events by any means ect.

No, this will not be tolerated. Your character will be dealt with however we see fit even if you do not agree with it, you will be disallowed from joining future Resistance events and reported to GMs if need be.

tumblr_inline_ojodoahFKN1trt837_540.png

Resistance events are meant to be a fun evening of roleplay for many! Whereas we don’t mind conflict with(in) the Resistance we urge you not to disturb the events on purpose. For the sake of the organisers and the people attending both.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Avelyn Firestone in game or shoot us a message.

Thank you all for your cooperation!

Ala Mhigan Roleplay FAQ

TxXy4JT.png

Do I have to be a Highlander Hyur to roleplay an Ala Mhigan?

No. With the exception of Au Ra, all the other races have been confirmed to reside in Ala Mhigo. While the nobility and royalty seem only to have been Highlander Hyur, non-Highlanders could hold positions of high standing within Ala Mhigan society. At the moment, we have no evidence that non-Highlanders were discriminated against.

For all their flaws, Ala Mhigans seemed to have little issue with certain races compared to some of the other city-states.

Does my character have to live in Little Ala Mhigo?

No. There are also Ala Mhigan settlements in the Shroud. That said, make no mistake - Ala Mhigans live all over Eorzea (and most likely beyond). If your Ala Mhigan fled or was born in Limsa, for example? That’s completely fine, too.

Little Ala Mhigo is simply where a lot of the stubborn and bitter Ala Mhigans gathered up after being mistreated and ignored by the Eorzean Alliance on the whole. A lot of them just didn’t have the means or opportunity to make their way further than Thanalan.

M64cLen.png

So Little Ala Mhigo is full of ignorant, resentful peasants. Does that mean that all Ala Mhigans are like that?

No. At the time of the Garlean invasion, Ala Mhigo was widely regarded as the most technologically advanced city-state in all Aldenard. This served as an added incentive for the Empire to annex their territory and conscript their populace. Besides their conventional military forces - griffin cavalry, pikemen, and before the purge of their order, the Fists of Rhalgr - Ala Mhigo also boasted scholars and skilled engineers. We strongly recommend looking up Erik, the Ala Mhigan Midlander scholar NPC from the Monk quests; while he pontificates on many subjects, his dialogue during that quest chain is a great resource for Ala Mhigan lore.

And yes, we can read. Really.

Does my character have to be a part of the Resistance if I roleplay an Ala Mhigan?

No. There are plenty of Ala Mhigans who are not involved with the Resistance. They might disagree with the Resistance’s methods, see no point in reclaiming their homeland, have too many ties in Eorzea, or any number of other possible reasons.

You don’t have to support the Resistance at all as an Ala Mhigan. You can move on and go your own way if that’s what your character would do. At worst, your character might get accused of cowardice or disloyalty by Resistance members, but your character is not obligated to agree with or support them.

xdgNcwQ.png

Why don’t the city-states like Ala Mhigans?

No one in Eorzea seems to like refugees to begin with. The Domans were denied residence pretty much everywhere and ended up settling in Mor Dhona for lack of anywhere else.

For Ala Mhigans specifically, a significant amount of the animosity they attract can be attributed to the Autumn War. According to the prevailing Ala Mhigan perspective, their military incursion into the Shroud wasn’t blatant conquest for its own sake, but an attempt to acquire more fertile land in order to feed their growing population. Eorzean (and particularly Gridanian) opinions may differ, however. As far as many in the Alliance are concerned, Ala Mhigans are warmongering thugs who got their just comeuppance, but have the gall to come begging to the people they tried to conquer when they have no right to present themselves as victims.

Is my character required to worship Rhalgr?

Not at all. Rhalgr is the patron deity of Ala Mhigo, to the point where the Fists of Rhalgr wielded significant political power as a religious institution besides what clout they had as warriors. Other deities of the Twelve were also worshiped in Ala Mhigo, however, and at the moment we have no evidence to indicate that the Fists ever outlawed worship of gods other than Rhalgr (Theodoric was another story entirely).

Given the King of Ruin’s fixation on Nymeia, the Spinner is the one deity your character may want to be careful about openly praising in front of Ala Mhigans.

VKDhj6E.png

If my character worships Rhalgr, do they have to be a Fist of Rhalgr? What if my character is a martial artist from Ala Mhigo? Am I still obligated to roleplay them as a Fist?

No. The Fists are a religious order. All Ala Mhigans know how to fight; it is an integral part of their culture. Nothing states that a martial artist hailing from Ala Mhigo needs to be a Fist of Rhalgr. There are likely plenty of ordinary Pugilists in Gyr Abania - punching jerks is universal.

Your character does not have to be a Fist of Rhalgr to praise Rhalgr. The Fists were his warrior-priests, not his sole devotees.

So what’s the deal with these Fists, then? I only see people talk about their chakras and constantly wanting to fight. What’s up with that?

The Fists devote themselves to worshiping Rhalgr. They do not adhere to a specific fighting style so much as follow a way of life. As previously stated, they are a religious order. Warmongers go to Rhalgr’s Hell, so it is likely that pointless violence (which, admittedly, is a very flexible concept, especially for Fists) is strictly forbidden in their religion.

Combat and continual honing of their martial skills was a method of worship for the Fists, but members of their order also often served in additional positions, such as advisors in the royal court. Unfortunately, we lack more concrete lore regarding their exact involvement with Ala Mhigan society beyond generally having religious and political influence, so at the moment we can only speculate.

That being said, it is safe to assume that the Fists of Rhalgr have more complexity as an order than simply being hotheaded brawlers.

KMSjAsa.png

Okay, so what are chakras, then? Can I have them as a non-Fist?

Chakras are only relevant to the Fists of Rhalgr and those in possession of a Monk’s soulstone. While Fists claim that every living being possesses these Light- and Shadow-aspected gateways for aether, beyond the Warrior of Wildly Unlikely Exceptions Light, thus far there have not been any non-Monk NPCs who are able to access their chakras.

Unlocking a chakra takes years of training, and the methods required to do so are not public knowledge. After all, the Fists are believed to be extinct - your average hyur on the street wouldn’t have that level of insight.

I see people roleplay non-Fist Monks with open chakras, though…

That’s fanon! The only time the word monk comes up to describe a non-Fist is a lonely Ishgardian priest in the MSQ, and he almost certainly doesn’t have open chakras unless there’s something even wackier than usual going on with the Halonic Orthodox Church (while they do have personnel who wield fist weapons/patas, they are not explicitly stated to be Fist-style Monks proper).

As it stands, monk in a non-Ala Mhigan context simply pertains to garden-variety friars.

D6hIN0q.png

Are there any other classes or jobs for an Ala Mhigan-themed character if I don’t want to roleplay a Fist of Rhalgr?

Absolutely! Go have a gander around Little Ala Mhigo, the Corpse Brigade, and Ala Mhigan NPCs in general.

Ala Mhigo was known for having excellent Pikemen, who were just as feared as the Fists of Rhalgr for their prowess in battle, and Griffin Riders were knights who served as aerial heavy cavalry.

We have Ala Mhigan Shamans, who appear to be conjurers. We have Flamedancers, who seem to be thaumaturges. We have Knuckledancers, who are pugilists. We have Ala Mhigan Bladedancers, who appear to be marauders (Apparently the -dancer suffix is popular in Ala Mhigo. Who knew?).

We have scholarly (but not capital-S Nymian Scholar) types. We have civilians. We even have engineers who are adept at using and designing all sorts of technology.

(No, seriously. You have a lot of options, and that’s just scratching the surface.)

Don’t ever feel pressured to be a Fist of Rhalgr. In fact, being a Fist is probably quite rare, due to the fact that in 1552, the Fists’ main temple was the subject of a bloody purge, the Monks within slaughtered en masse by order of the King of Ruin.

I heard that the Resistance on the whole is a closely guarded secret. Is this true?

No. The existence of the Resistance is common knowledge. The only real secret is the identity of the Griffin and his doubles, and even the impact of that MSQ-induced revelation is uncertain while we’re still waiting in pre-3.55 limbo. Thanks, Square Enix.

Last but not least, a big thank you to Arcian for helping me write out this post!

Resistance Chocobo Cosplay

tumblr_inline_oswbmwZGRJ1trt837_540.png

Do you want your own Resistance look-alike chocobo? Are you willing to invest time, gil and effort into it? But you simply have no clue how to achieve this?

Worry not! With these two simple steps, you too can have your very own Ala Mhigan chocobo!

  • Dye your chocobo Plum Purple by feeding it at a stable.

If you did not unlock chocobo raising yet, you will need do the Questline ‘Bird in Hand’ in order to do such.

The ‘FFXIV Chocobo’ site is an excellent resource to help you out with this. Make sure to click on the ‘View Feeding Order’ button as well, so you do not end up with a completely different coloured chocobo! Keep in mind while the site cannot guarantee that your chocobo will have the perfect colour on the first try.

  • Acquire the Ala Mhigan barding by participating in the ‘Rattle And Humbaba’ (68) Fate in the Peaks.

Mouth for Water’ is the Fate which starts the chain! Thankfully the chain only exists out of two parts. While we cannot state for certain, you probably need a gold participation medal in order to be rewarded with the Ala Mhigan barding. It spawns near Ala Ghiri.

Despite all this your chocobo will still have the height of what Square Enix assigned to your character. So unless you’re a Roegadyn, there’s a good chance your chocobo will still be (somewhat) shorter compared to the NPC ones.

Hope this was helpful for those interested!

Adding my 2¢

Get a group for these fates. The first one is an NPC defense fate, and the NPC likes to get swarmed and take lots of damage. The 2nd fate is a 30 minute boss fate with typical adds. This is the one that rewards the barding. It spawns just NE of Ala Ghiri. You will have to chase the NPC from one fate to the start of the next, some distance away.

With Stormblood being released for a little while now, and with most people in the linkshell having finished up their MSQ, we are happy to see roleplay is slowly picking up in Gyr Abania!

With that we like to announce that we will be opening our recruitment within the coming couple of days!

So please stay tuned for a couple of days longer, and we will provide you with all the information onto how to join our merry band of Ala Mhigans and friends.

“Brave souls all,

We bloom and fall,

Each one a petal,

In Eternity’s Beaknettle.”

- Ala Mhigan Prayer

“Beloved citizens of Ala Mhigo, Rhalgr’s faithful, dear friends and allies,

While our spirits are lifted due to the victory the Destroyer has bestowed upon us, it is of importance we do not forgot our kin who have given their bodies and souls to see us freed from Imperial rule. Nor should we not forget our traditions, lest we forget what being Ala Mhigan means.

Therefore I invite you all to join us at the Tomb of the Errant Sword, to remember those who have perished abroad, to remember those who have given their lives so our children may know freedom.”

  • What: A Remembrance for the Ala Mhigans who have perished abroad.

  • Who: Anyone who wishes to pay their respects to the Ala Mhigans who perished beyond the borders of Gyr Abania. You don’t have to be Ala Mhigan to join us!!
  • When: Sunday, August 6 - 5:00 PM EST
  • Where: The Lochs - Click for Map - X22.6 Y5.8

  • Contact: Avelyn Firestone

It is custom for a person to bring an object who formerly belonged to the deceased, such as a sword, with them and leave them at the cenotaph. Food also seems to be placed at graves, tombs and the like, so this is certainly an option as well if your character does not have an item left belonging formerly to their loved one. Or if they simply wish to show their respect to those who have died abroad. But! Just observing is completely acceptable as well.

It’s worth of note that there’s vaguely being hinted at that the Ala Mhigans believe that the deceased can hear what is being said there.

If your character wishes to say some words publicly regarding their loved one who perished abroad, please contact Avelyn Firestone, or contact us through Tumblr. We’d love to see people helping us out promoting Ala Mhigan culture, tradition and religion after all!

We hope to see you there.

May Rhalgr guide your path.
