Staying logged in to avoid queues? Don't.

But I only posted twice in the thread before this response? :?

Anyway, my point and opinion still stands. It's just not going to do much good here, and probably won't on the official forums either - but if you want to give it a shot there, you've got more chance than here of reaching a few people who maybe don't realize what prolonged afk is doing to the server load. Or petition SE. I would say it just seems more logical from the get-go, but I realize that people's first instincts is to rant to friends about a problem and might not realize until later they're preaching to the choir.

Well, I said "like"...

My first instinct was to bring it to the RPC's attention because I saw quite a few people doing it in Intermission (not going to name names) and we of all people should know better, because we are the ones who constantly preach about how much we care about new players and how courteous we are. Regular MMO players doing it is to be expected but I've been under the impression since April that this community holds itself to a higher moral standard. Needless to say, it was a post initially manifested out of disappointment.

It was more meant to imply the position of "Why give up a spot to someone else, who will do exactly what I could have done?" as well as a response to Uther's original statement about being kind to ones brother RPers and such. Just stating that, chances are, my (Or whoevers) spot wouldn't be given to an RPer anyways.

Allow me to clarify. I didn't mean to explicitly state that we should give up spots to new RPers who want to play. I meant new players in general. I haven't always been a roleplayer, and I don't think the choice to abstain from roleplay makes anyone less important as far as the grand MMO scheme is concerned. I feel bad for anyone who has paid for this game and is unable to play. I'm looking at the character creation screen right now. Do you know how many NA/EU servers are available for creation? None. Zero.

Another thing I'd like to point out. Some people are logged in for 16 hours while they aren't playing (sleep + work). In that time you could, potentially, cycle through 4-8 casual players. Just because some of us are RPers or some of us are more hardcore gamers doesn't make us more important, or give us the right to deny other people their chance to play. That's all I'm trying to say.

But the more I thought about it, the more I began to empathize with newcomers who can't make any character at all on the server. Imagine how you would feel if you hadn't been following the game too closely and never pre-ordered it. It's launch and you can't even make a character until next week because everyone refuses to log out and give you a chance.

I'm in that boat right now. I was really bummed that I didn't get into the EA because I had only payed for 2 months of subscription back in 1.0, the 27th rolls around and I finally get to play. Or so I thought.

Turns out I'm going to have to sit here looking at my character and refreshing the world information until next week.

They are expanding server capacity starting next Monday, which, in their words, they hope makes a 'significant' impact. Courtesy towards fellow gamers would be sweet, but I don't begrudge people just trying to enjoy the game.

When their way of "enjoying the game" is going AFK and denying others the opportunity to play, I will most certainly hold it against them.

It doesn't really matter if it's the only way to guarantee a slot on a server. They're essentially saying "To hell with everyone that isn't me." and no matter your reasons, that's a shitty thing to do.

No single person can fix this problem on their own. But you can certainly decide whether or not you want to be part of the problem.

Trust me when I say the server cap problem is WAY more than just people staying AFK.  While I commend your effort in this posting the REAL problem is SE low expectations of how many NA-EU people would play.  They took the worst approach to the situation

I admit I am in game now while AFK for dinner.  And I also have been plagued with constant DC and error 90k issues.   So like everyone else I'd like to stay in game as long as I can.  Cause when I am kicked out I'm out the rest of the day and night. Hate me if you want I can't stop you.

Patience and time this will get fixed

Hey, man, that really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. I've been waiting to make my main but I can always hop on my alt if I get too bored, so at least I have that luxury. You can always try during the low-pop hours, though so far it hasn't really worked for me. Also, last night Sargantas went down for a bit and character creation went back up because no one knew the server had come back up yet. So you can always hope Balmung crashes. Other than that you're pretty much out of luck until next week or until SE implements an auto-kick function.

As for your response to Magellan's post,

I agree with every single word of that, pretty much.

I'm not disputing you. Personally, I think you are right, and that it is a selfish action. However, personally, I'm not going to let it get to me. I am here to have fun, and am not going to let the actions of others keep me from that. I am very sorry you haven't been able to get in yet. I too have struggled to get in, though I do have a char on Balmung. I've fallen further and further behind my friends (some of whom may even exploit this), so I symphathise with how much this sucks. Plus, I damaged my laptop last night. Things haven't exactly been going my way.

Am I disappointed and frustrated? Absolutely. So much so that I'm taking a 5 day break to just take a step back from it. But I'm not going to take it out on other people because To do so would spoil my future enjoyment of the game.

I kind of think of it like a busy highway full of bad, discourteous drivers. Many would rail against

these drivers, and with good reason. But I just am generally slow to anger. I support Uther's message and his right to say it, but I personally hold no anger in my heart towards afkers.

It only takes me about 10-15 minutes of trying to hop back in after logging out for a while.

That's actually not true. I mean about the 10-15 minutes. I spent an hour last night trying to log in before finally giving up and going to bed. If I had been logged in when I got home, I would have been able to actually play some. Instead, I didn't get any play time at all.

And I do understand that. My partner has had a similar level of difficulty getting in, too, I realized, though for the passed three days, twenty minutes or so was all it took for me to slip in after getting home from work.

Then again, maybe I've just been lucky and jinxed myself. PFFT.

This may or may not help, as I think they've actually locked the creation of new characters on Gil and Bal (Correct me if that's incorrect though.) I've had the best, easiest time being able to log in, in the early hours of the morning. I wake up at about 7 or so AM, CST time and can get in without any problem whatsoever.

If at all possible, you might try that. Go to bed a little earlier, wake up a little earlier than normal and try it in the wee hours of the morning.

For some reason though, that's not the same as trying to get in at 1AM CST. Apparently, the late hours of the night are not the same as the wee hours of the morning..

Anywho. Back on topic!

Ironically enough that's exactly what I did last night! I went to bed early, got up at 3 AM, went to log in... and there was an emergency maintainance and the game was down until 5. *facepalm* Oh, well. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow morning. ;)

Their notifications on which servers are and are not available for character creation are just speculation, I'm pretty sure. I think it's an automatic thing done by a game mechanic itself. The most recent notification says, for instance, that Faerie is closed and Coeurl is open, and that they will send out a notification when it changes. Earlier today, while trying to make my main, the in-game list said Faerie was open and Coeurl was closed, along with some other discrepancies (those were the only two I remembered). So even if the list says it's down, it doesn't hurt to check for yourself. Keep in mind though that Balmung is exceedingly popular and is one of the names that has been on all eight lists.

Best bet is to hope for a Sargantas moment. Server crashes and comes back up, no one notices it's back, the low population allows for character creation. Sneak in and make a character before it tells you that you can't. Of course, that's somewhat rare.

Another optimistic outlook is that, because Balmung has been on the lock list for so long and it's easier to log in today, maybe they'll open it up for creation soon. Who knows?

Never hurts to have hope.

Is it easier to log in today? Or is it just easier because they had the maintainance this morning so it automatically kicked the AFKers off and that has left the server temporarily light? I'll let you know when I get home and can or can't log in. ;)

As with me, after the emergency maintenance I noticed I was quite capable of logging in at 7 AM EST, had to go something, logged out; came back and logged back in at 12 PM EST... and I didn't get a 1017 error, no, I got a server queue! So them capping creation has slowed the tide of incoming players (good and bad).

As for me being logged in? Sadly, I tend to do that a lot when days off, yesterday I was logged in for nearly fifteen hours... which I've played thirteen of those. I'm seriously no-lifing this game. *laughs* But, I suppose that doesn't fit in the "Log online, go cross-town/to work; eight or so hours later, come back to play." ^_^

I've been logging in and out all day with little issue. Worst I've gotten was a queue of 2. Then again, I haven't logged in for a few hours so maybe the peak hours have destroyed that.

I think the worst part is that that you don't even seem to get a queue at this time. Just a message telling you to "wait until an opening is available and try again". Isn't that kind of the point of a queue? I can understand the frustration - they more or less present you with 'keep clicking until you get in' as the only option at this point.

It kind of saddens me that most of the potential openings are taken by these AFKers though. I'm still spotting the same people as usual in the same places as usual, so...

People who afk to not have to deal with the login BS need to have a power outage/surge in the middle of something important. >.>

Funny note on that...

My best friend was doing that - Had left his character logged in while he was at work. He worked a 10 hour shift, and would periodically remote access into his computer at home to check if he was still logged in. He remained in and idle the entire shift.

He gets home, moves to sit down and somehow manages to kick his power cord, yanking it from his tower. Logging off in such a fashion left his character logged in, which mean that when his computer was back on, he couldn't log in. Cause he already was.

Karma?

What I don't understand is...

Why someone actively playing the game gets booted- yet an afker can stay on all day and night...

I am -constantly- getting kicked from the game and unable to return.

Just an hour ago, I was kicked from the middle of the last boss fight in Coppermine.

I always log off when I go to have dinner, but that means I most likely won't be able to log back in after. I've been tempted to just afk so that I can keep playing, but yes... I recognize that'd be unfair.

At least this gives my poor PC a break *pats it*.

What I think they should do is boot everyone, shut down all the servers, freeze that "free time" that's ticking away for everyone, and redub the "launch" for whenever the servers are fixed. Instead they're letting it go on and on while thousands of people can't get in--especially those of us who aren't at home during low traffic hours.

The thing that makes it frustrating is knowing that other people are getting the opportunity that you aren't. If it was shut down for everyone, it'd be annoying, sure, but it wouldn't be infuriating, and there would be no constant desperation to get in to play with friends and play catch up like there is now.

I haven't really had to many problems logging in...say for a few times I had to exit n reenter the game a few times..n yes I agree these people worked hard on this game and leaving your character seems exstremely selfish...I understand you have to work maybe you can't get in....so what during that whole time your doing what you have to do...to you know eat...live with a roof over your...you know those luxuries you take for granted n complain about your job....well FFxiv is a one you don't need to survive yes its fun...but you could be virtuous to others square Enid included they need this game to be successful...so that means they don't need people getting there money back because you wanted to "hold your place in line "....have you been to the DMV when its busy...I'm talking like 10 years ago when there was lines....yea...frustrating enough right....imagine this your in DMV...n the person ahead of you doesn't move forward with the line...you can see the people ahead of the person moving getting there buissness taking care of....but not you...because there's some dkhead ahead of you not letting you move with line
