Ildur Posted September 16, 2013 Share #26 Posted September 16, 2013 Let's assume that the reason all this armors are undyeable is because they are iconic. Let's consider the following questions: Why can't we go against the icon? Does it harm the icon itself in any shape or form? Do White Mages stop being White Mages for not wearing white? Does a Paladin stop being a Paladin if he doesn't wear blue (or whatever color scheme they use)? Wouldn't it be like saying that the habit makes the monk? And, finally, if going against the icon does indeed harm the icon... is it a bad thing? Why? Personally, I think this whole 'they are icons and as such they should not be dyeable' seems like a personal aesthetic choice forced into everyone else. Having these items be dyeable doesn't affect your aesthetic choice at all (because, arguably, their original dye color would be the iconic one), but not having them does affect other people's aesthetic choice. Dravus Posted September 16, 2013 Share #27 Posted September 16, 2013 It serves to cheapen things considerably, though. If people want their character to be unique then they're better off requesting additional options to be added to the character creation system. Having some things remain rather exclusive isn't a bad thing and I'd go as far as to suggest it's something that's sorely needed in modern day MMO's. Link to comment
Chisae Posted September 16, 2013 Share #28 Posted September 16, 2013 Cheapening would be making everyoone looking the same... uniqueness in the chargen only goes so far when you have armour that forces you to wear a hood or a helmet. This is 2013. We have pc,s with hard drives in the terabytes and vram in the gigabytes. There's no reason for limiting character uniqueness like there was in the early days of mmos. Also something is not exclusive if everyone can get it... that would be more like that sword in warcraft that only one person on a server could have. I could go home and level a paladin and get the "exclusive" "iconic" paladin look if I wanted... Raubhan has unique and exclusive armour. Link to comment

Everybody and their mom who gets past 45 in-game wears or has worn or is about to wear that look. Its utter pervasiveness in the game is exactly why it needs to be dyeable, because otherwise we all end up looking like clones. Link to comment
LeCard Posted September 17, 2013 Author Share #30 Posted September 17, 2013 hmmm. The only two AF Job gear that I can think of that is in fact a constant color scheme because it really only comes from one character in all the titles, would be Dragoon. (unless you want to count freya as a dragoon, but that is an entirely different look, not that I don't want the freya look). And The ever present WHM look from the original games. Paladin- Knight look, nothing else FF specific about it. Monk- I don't recall any yellow monks from FF BLM- close but really just the basic BLM look, it's no Vivi(unless your a lala, then it darn close) BRD- reminds me more of kefka than an playable FF character WAR- looks like it walked out of Dragon Age or Skyrim SMN- Classic look, but mostly just the horn, it's all about the horn SCH- I don't even remember ever seeing this in an FF game. WHM&DRG= FF classic change the color and it looses its awesome factor by over 9000 TL;DR DRG & WHM are the only two jobs that have Iconic AF gear from previous FF titles (unless someone can prove me wrong, and I'm not talking about SMN horns, yes they have them yes their awesome, but I don't recall a standard color between games.) Pretty much this exactly. I was all excited about endgame gear as a monk, until I found out the AF was eye-destroyingly yellow and undyeable. Which sort of baffled me, just because monks/blackbelts have always had either blue outfits or no shirt/puffy pants in pretty much every FF incarnation (Barring Amarant from FF9 and the brown armor from 11, which was nice in its own right.) I can understand wanting to leave Dragoons and White Mages untouched, but deciding on arbitrary color palettes for classes and not allowing you to deviate a whit seems pointless to me.
