Kylin Posted October 14, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 14, 2013 This may likely come as a shock to many, as I've not discussed it with a single person as of yet in order to avoid dealing with external influences. But it's something that has been on my mind for an extremely long time now, as far back as 2011 actually. As of this upcoming spring, I will be stepping down from the role of RPC administrator. As stated before, this is something I had intended to do for a very long time. At one point a long time ago, there was another administrator set to replace me before said admin left the game and disappeared. I have yet to find a suitable replacement and have continued to put the decision off over and over and over again. By officially announcing this timetable, putting it off will no longer be a possibility. Even now, I was trying to come up with excuses as to why the timing of this announcement would be better suited for later. But by putting it off further, I'll just keep coming up with new excuses later down the line. So I figure it best to get it out now. I want to stress that this decision has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of drama or fallout with anyone or any groups whatsoever. It is simply a personal decision that has been put off for a long time. When I set out to create this site, I didn't do so for selfish or baseless reasons. Nowadays, it's easy to see people rush to make new RP coalitions the second a new MMO is announced. FFXIV's RPC was a very different case and was much more of a building process than many. When XIV was first announced in 2009, the concept of a RP coalition was still relatively new to many RPers out there. Sure, there were a couple pre-existing ones for other games (Aion and Everquest II to name some). But the concept wasn't full blown at the time. And a lot of the XIV RPers were coming from XI, where they were used to being isolated for up to 6 or more long years. I still recall how cautious many FFXI RP groups were when I approached them with the idea. My reasoning was simple: I didn't want a repeat of XI's small and fragmented Rp community. I wanted to see XIV thrive with numerous unique groups interacting with each other on a daily basis. And I firmly believe we accomplished that in spades. The RPC will be hitting its 4 year anniversary in February. And I feel it quite appropriate to end my tenure shortly thereafter. Four years is a long time, and I couldn't be more proud of what the RPC has done and accomplished. The fact that we stayed alive during the mass exodus of 1.0's players was amazing, and the fact that we made an unrivaled comeback with ARR is mind blowing. I know not everyone has necessarily agreed with decisions I've made in regards to the direction of the site. But I hope people at the very least respect the decisions and perhaps see why I made the choices I've made over all these years. The community as a whole has always been at the forefront of my mind, even now. The fact of the matter is, my passion has withered to a point that I can no longer sustain in regards to being the site's caretaker. And I don't feel the community should ever have a caretaker that doesn't have such passion. I keep a watchful eye on other MMO RP coalitions, and I see the barren wastelands they become due in part to negligent admins who abandon the game and, by extension, the community associated with it. While I have no intention of abandoning the site, the game, or the community anytime soon, I just feel that my time at the helm of the wheel here has come to an end. I don't have the time, the energy, or the devotion that I feel necessary to keep the site in top shape. Everything I do lately feels more like an obligation than something I get excited about. And the community deserves a caretaker who has more passion and energy than that. In the coming months, I hope to have many discussions with the rest of the site's staff and with all of YOU as I search for a proper replacement for RPC admin. I hope that, together, we will all find someone who is not only devoted and passionate about the game for years to come, but also someone who has the skills, energy, and knowledge to maintain the site for as long as they possibly can. More details on the transition will come at that time. In the event that I am unable to find a replacement who fits my own criteria by the deadline, I will leave the decision solely in the hands of the mod team. It has been an amazing ride. For those who have been here since the beginning, you all know the many evolutions we've gone through and the drama that we've endured to get so far. I'm so privileged to have worked with so many of you in helping to make this site what it is today. I wouldn't take any of the experiences here back for a second, as they have helped me grow in ways I never thought I could. While it may be impossible for me to keep up and read every single post like I used to, it still makes me super giddy to see the forum so bustling with life on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing it continue to prosper in the years to come and seeing what new direction it may take. Please note that this change is still a good 4-5 months away, and I have no intention of slacking off in the meantime. But I had to set the timetable now or it would never actually happen. Thank you all for your myriad of contributions to this site and community, whether such contributions be large or small. I could not have asked for a better community to shape what we are today. I sincerely hope nobody sees this announcement as a 'bad' thing, but rather a new chapter in an ever expanding story. I encourage everyone to give their full support to the future new admin so that the RPC can continue to thrive for years to come. Link to comment
ZinJaeger Posted October 14, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 14, 2013 Hmmm Well Kylin you've done a great job and accomplished a lot of good things. It's understandable you want to retire after many years. I haven't really talked much to you or anything, but yeah, Intermission is a great community from my experience so great job, man I'm sure you'll find a suitable person to take over the reigns, but no one can quite replace you entirely. Good luck to you! Hopefully you'll have a bright and happy future Great job, man! Thanks a bunch! Link to comment
Freemoon Posted October 14, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 14, 2013 I may be new, but I think it shows that you've done a great job here. I understand all too well where you are coming from with this decision (co-ran a site similar to this for three and a half years, among other things). I'm glad to see that the decision is one you made, not one because of a falling out or growing tired of the game or community, and I wish you all the best!! Link to comment
Dromwald Posted October 14, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2013 I'm also relatively new to this community but it is one of the most cohesive, welcoming and inclusive RP communities I've come across and that must be in part down to those who set it up and ensure that it remains vibrant. So kudos to you and I wish you well and hope you find a worthy replacement. 1 Link to comment
Aysun Posted October 14, 2013 Share #5 Posted October 14, 2013 I can't imagine anyone else doing the job! Thank you for all your hard work over the years, Kylin. I know it hasn't been easy! I hope you'll stay on as a moderator when you do step down! Link to comment
LeCard Posted October 14, 2013 Share #6 Posted October 14, 2013 Kylin, I may not have been able to see you at work in you hayday, but since I joined this site in beta phase 2 I've seen nothing but awesome from you and the rest of the RPC staff. I must say that I will watch the changing of the guard for this site with a touch of trepidation as I wait to see who our new commander at the helm will be. I wish you well Kylin, and I wouldn't wish anyone to feel burdened in the name of RP, if it starts becoming a job and not something fun then it defeats the whole purpose of RP. I hope you stepping down from the helm will give you the break you need so that you can relax and enjoy all the fun of this RP community that you have lead to such a cool place. Link to comment
Tobias Nightbringer Posted October 14, 2013 Share #7 Posted October 14, 2013 All jokes aside, haven't the honor and privilege to meet ya Mister Kylin, but all the same, nothing but the best endeavors and journey in your life, wherever it takes you. The effort you have made to have such an amazing site to allow wonderful like-minded people a place to gather and call 'home' is awe-inspiring. My desire to RP has been re-ignited and slowly grows day by day, because of this site. For that, I humbly offer my sincere and deepest thanks and gratitude. 1 Link to comment
DAISHI Posted October 15, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 15, 2013 Well this sucks, but... Retire my good man. You've earned a rest. Link to comment
S'maia Rahz Posted October 15, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 15, 2013 I'm also a newcomer, at least compared to the 1.0 crew and beta folks, but I also want to extend my thanks and gratitude. Without the RPC, I doubt I'd love FFXIV nearly as much as do now. This community truly makes the game what it is for me, and I can't express how much your hard work in putting together and maintaining this coalition means to me. Thank you! Link to comment
Brave Posted October 15, 2013 Share #10 Posted October 15, 2013 I love the fact that someone took the time to gather us all in one place, and keeping so many people organized is no easy task. I remember when a friend gave me the link to this site. He wanted me to get into the game and as soon as I saw the content and people involved here I was sold. I'm also fairly new, but I did want to say thank you. The few times I've seen you in action you've handled things well and VERY professionally. Thank you for all you've done. =) Link to comment
Fall Posted October 27, 2013 Share #11 Posted October 27, 2013 Well done in ushering so many together under the same cause Link to comment
Kylin Posted December 3, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted December 3, 2013 I am prepared to make a possible selection by the month's end and start the gradual training and eventual transition should my nominee accept the job. Before I approach said nominee, I still welcome more feedback. This feedback can relate to your own personal nominees and/or anyone you think should be avoided at all costs. Please do any of this via private message here, in game tells (Kylin Felstar), or via private skype (zariksylvora). Link to comment
CalebAgron Posted January 1, 2014 Share #13 Posted January 1, 2014 Thanks for your time as the admin, this site was a major gateway for me to the rp community and I don't think FF RP would be what it is today without it! Link to comment
Tiergan Posted January 1, 2014 Share #14 Posted January 1, 2014 Thank you for all your amazing efforts! Though there have undoubtedly been many bumps in the road, this website has helped so much in helping me find RP in FFXIV and I'm sure many others would say the same. Link to comment
