little-patchy Posted December 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 18, 2013 What do you think about the PvP? Any tips and tricks? As for me, I find that the Scholar's Adloquium shield is one of the more useful ways to prevent the barrage of interrupts (getting pummeled by relics hurts!). I get knocked out in, like, half of my matches (/cry). Also, do you think they'll be adding dueling any time? Would be so useful for role-playing, like a character teaching another character martial arts, or the settlement of a personal vendetta, or a mud fight with Tias/Nunhs clad in speedos! Trigonxv Posted December 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 18, 2013 if the PvP is met with good reception I'm pretty sure a dueling feature will be added Link to comment
Naunet Posted December 18, 2013 Share #3 Posted December 18, 2013 That would be fun, and Squeenix does not allow fun. Also, the only talk of duels we've had have been in the context of challenges restricted to the housing areas. Hurrah for arbitrary restrictions in the name of... who knows what! Hopefully they change their mind. Link to comment
Tla Posted December 18, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 18, 2013 So far only did a single match, just to try. My experience was om wth is going on what's all these conditions on people etc until I died and the rest of the group followed. The 3 persons I ended up with though (apparently a premade?) knew some tricks, and they informed me, before the battle started, that I had to cast Medica2 before battle start (see it as upkeep regen on everybody, imho) and stick with the tank for the whole fight since he would protect me. That's all I know sadly. I also heard healers in general are pretty much in a pitiful state in this game's pvp so... Link to comment
Fenrir Posted December 18, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 18, 2013 I've been asleep through most of it. Literally. Link to comment
Dogberry Posted December 18, 2013 Share #6 Posted December 18, 2013 I'm curious to hear more responses. I was looking forward to PVP. I hear that I'd be very comfortable in PVP. As a narcoleptic, it's nice not being the only one randomly falling asleep. Link to comment
LandStander Posted December 18, 2013 Share #7 Posted December 18, 2013 I have been going crazy with the PvP. I believe it was handled a lot better than I expected. The only thing they really need is either a debuff on blm sleep or more sleep resistant gear. I play a SCH and as you would expect, healers are high on everyone's list. You can't just sit in the back in heal constantly. I toss in miasma's (for gravity and -healing) or use Blizzard 2 to bind people who have come after you. You really have to learn how to use all of the skills are your disposal, but it really requires a lot of team work. You can be the best healer in the world, but if you are rushed and none of your DPS or tanks are protecting you, you will fall pretty quickly. All and all I rate it a 3.5/5, but its still A LOT of fun and a nice mix up from the day to day mindless beast slaying. Link to comment

I do love it when I get to party with a BLM who takes care of me by sleeping those who attack me. That way I can keep the Adloquium shield on myself and the BLM to protect both of us from interrupts. I also appreciate the tanks and dps who stun my attackers (I agree with Tlamila: hang around the tank so they can see you). PvP seems to really require party members to protect each other -- maybe even more than offense. Oh, and to counter sleep, Purify (the PvP ability) is like warm vanilla cake fresh from the oven with whipped cream and strawberries -- can't do without it. Edit: And dueling only in housing areas? Sorta makes me think of those usable-only-in-inns emotes. Link to comment
LandStander Posted December 19, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 19, 2013 Hahaha, I have not yet looked at the PvP abilities and I am already rank 6 . I will have to check them out Link to comment
Trigonxv Posted December 19, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 19, 2013 I will say this I love playing drg so awesome more so the jumps just really ruins the day of someone running away Link to comment
Michikyou Posted December 19, 2013 Share #11 Posted December 19, 2013 Sleep.. groan. Scholars aren't loved, they see me and i'm asleep the whole match. Link to comment
Aleister Posted December 19, 2013 Share #12 Posted December 19, 2013 I've enjoyed it. Me and a few friends who went and tried it out have been doing well, we kinda figured out how to combat the sleep and a few other annoying things, after that.. Things became fun haha. Experiences will change and vary as we're all just goofing around in there at the moment. Link to comment
Lilith.Grimoire Posted December 20, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 20, 2013 Awful. I probably played around 25 matches, and if we didn't win it was because I had three of the enemy team chasing me down, stunlocking or sleeping me then murdering me. Being a healer is -not- rewarding unless you have a good team that can kill their healer faster than they can kill me. Scary and frustrating! :< Link to comment
Chika Ito Posted December 20, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 20, 2013 I agree with the lessening the duration of sleep, or making sleep resistant gear more effective. There was one match I was asleep the entire time I think PvP is okay with how they have done it, but they could do a little better. Such as monks for example. You would think that bards would be broken since we're range. LAWL nope >( I've been ganged up on by monks, and it isn't fun. Their attacks hit hella hard, and they have the ability to down an opponent in a few seconds if your healer is too busy, or dead. 'Course this could be me whining, and there might not be anything wrong with the class -shrugs- Link to comment
W'seckhi Asah Posted December 20, 2013 Share #15 Posted December 20, 2013 I've been having a blast. That said, sleep spam is crazy annoying, and morale's effects are becoming more and more pronounced at higher levels. While we've been steam-rolling teams with allagan weaponry, the real challenge comes from teams decked out in war wolf gear on the left side. That said, as a paladin, I feel I'm ridiculous in pvp. I can sit on a healer for ten seconds to keep them stunned with a one-second silence after, usually giving my summoner and monk friend to chase down a dps and absolutely annihilate them. Dren Posted December 20, 2013 Share #16 Posted December 20, 2013 I'm enjoying it immensely. The mode has allowed me to understand how to be a better Monk in PVE situations by not just using some abilities, but all of them. Last night I received my Warwolf PVP weapon and I'm aiming for my headpiece today. I've collected my boots and gloves thus far while having a blast doing it. If I could find a PVP team to be apart of that would be fun, as I tend to be on the losing side more often than not. With that being said, I look forward to the future of what PVP has to offer. Sitting at Rank 13. Link to comment
LandStander Posted December 20, 2013 Share #17 Posted December 20, 2013 D'Ren! You and I are now PvP buddies! Yeah my friend just made the wolf gear and I see a big difference in my survivability as a healer now. Link to comment
Tobias Nightbringer Posted December 20, 2013 Share #18 Posted December 20, 2013 I have yet to PvP in FF14, but I feel like I would liken it to WoW PvP in the sense that you should always try and: KILL THE HEALER! I am sure if I ever did get into PvP, I'd enjoy it since I play games like LoL. Link to comment

I am sure if I ever did get into PvP, I'd enjoy it since I play games like LoL. Eeeh, not always. There are times where it'd be preferable to have the healer CC'd and burn down a dps, such as an opposing scholar or black mage. Especially if the healer's a slippery little bastard. Link to comment

Mmm, yeah I should have clarified and instead said: KILL THE HEALER!...or...LOCK THEM DOWN SOMEHOW! Seeing a dps go to full because of lustrate or benediction is a little disheartening, to say the least. But so is chasing a scholar and seeing six lustrates in a row cast on themselves. Tobias Nightbringer Posted December 20, 2013 Share #23 Posted December 20, 2013 KILL THE HEALER! ...I'm glad I don't pvp (._.) *Intimidated*. Aww! I WAS trying to post a link that would open up to the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug trailer at the specific part where Smaug is saying "Come now, don't be shy..." but yeah, apparently I can't do a thing If it makes you feel any better, it wouldn't be anything personal if I were to kill you in PvP Mm, yes. Seeing a dps go to full because of lustrate or benediction is a little disheartening, to say the least. But so is chasing a scholar and seeing six lustrates in a row cast on themselves. Fenrir Posted December 20, 2013 Share #24 Posted December 20, 2013 This thread's metaphorical cup is entirely too full. Let's empty it a little. I cut my MMO teeth on DAoC. I was a high warlord in early vanilla WoW on my warrior. I once got up at 4 in the morning several weekends in a row to defend my stupid emperium in Ragnarok Online back when I was a dumb teenager. What I'm trying to say is that I'm big into PvP. I recognize that PvP came in as an afterthought in FFXIV. I recognize that it is more of a fun little mini-game at the moment than a full-blown way of playing the game. Yet I can't help but be disappointed. There's little strategy involved, and I doubt there'll be much of one unless they drastically overhaul the system. Basic things like "stick someone on the healer so they can't heal and blow up the stupid black mage" or "SLEEP THEM BEFORE THEY SLEEP US" serve as a .. kind of a strategy, but the execution isn't there. Then there's just the plain cardinal sin in any manner of PvP of having CC that lasts for more than 5 or so seconds at a time. Maybe the flaws of the system will be more easy to overlooked come 2.2 when we get those big battles I heard rumors of, but until then, I won't be going into PvP with my regular gusto. It's a fun little snack from time to time, but there's no meat to it just now. Not for me. Link to comment

Its more like a mini-game at the moment which is fine until we get higher ranks because mind you there are PvP skills we can get to help in PvP that'll make things a bit more interesting but its all very new at the moment so we won't really have those skills so for now.. It'll be either smash the healer first or smash the BLM than the healer. Also; we all hate the sleep but theres a way to counter that if you're dedicated to the PvP. Apparently there are PvP skills you can put points into to lower sleep duration and there are also matera, food, etc that do the same. It'll just take time to get them. I feel like PvP once given more time for players to progress with be interesting and have a widdle bit of strategy to it. Link to comment
