Knave Posted September 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2010 I feel like an idiot posting this, but I really need to know and google has failed me. Maybe it was like this in XI and everyone's simply just use to it.. but has anyone had any problems with the character limit (think about 85!?) in the chat box? I've found myself on occasion typing to my friend only to be stopped mid-way through an adjective. Is it just something I'm going to have to get use to or .. maybe.. there's a work around? *hopeful* Also, if someone says "use less adjectives" I will smack you! Link to comment
Satisiun Posted September 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 8, 2010 Use less pronouns? :joker: ... but, no. Sadly, at the moment, there is neither a workaround, nor any comment from SE about potentially expanding the character limit, to my knowledge. It definitely was never this limited in FFXI, and that is even factoring in the addition of surnames in XIV. Honestly, it's so bad I almost wonder if some ambitious tech. person (like the fine folks who made FFXI Windower) will try and come up with an external plug-in/box where you can type whatever you want, and it does the job of properly cutting it up in to bite-sized, half-Twitter pieces to send. Link to comment
Knave Posted September 8, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted September 8, 2010 Going to make an addendum to my original but with pronouns now! *smack* Ah, that's disappointing! Here's hoping it'll just be a Beta thing! You'd assume that with having to type a character's full name into the chat box they'd give you more wiggle room. Link to comment
Zyrusticae Posted September 8, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 8, 2010 It's very obviously a chatbox made with Japanese players in mind. Y'know, with the devs being Japanese and Japanese requiring fewer characters to form coherent sentences overall (with each symbol being either a noun or a syllable). It's rather unfortunate for us, but hopefully they will change it for the foreign playerbase. And hopefully they'll do the same with the horrible mouse lag. Link to comment

I didn't stop to think about that. Thank you for mentioning it, at least now I won't go around thinking the devs are out to get me! Link to comment

I mean, I get what you're saying. It makes sense, too, since the Japanese do require fewer characters, as you said. But that begs the question, why make the character limit even smaller than it was in FFXI? The one in XI didn't have any complaints I can think of, so it's almost like trying to "fix" something that wasn't broken to begin with? :? Tack on the fact you must type a full name out, and it becomes even more frustrating. Yeah, nicknames are possible to save some characters, but only for people who are your friends. And the name thing goes for everyone, including the Japanese, language differences aside. Link to comment
Zyrusticae Posted September 8, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 8, 2010 Well, in any case, whatever the reason for the low chat limit now it clearly needs to change, no question there. I really have no idea why it'd be lower than it was in FFXI other than simple lack of hindsight. Link to comment
Seraphine Felstar Posted September 8, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 8, 2010 I think this is very frustrating too. I guess we all just have to be a little patient and type things with two or three /tells instead of just one. Link to comment
Koti Nexus Posted September 8, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 8, 2010 I must admit, the typing limit does annoy me as well, but I am pretty quick to adapt to any given circumstance, and since I now know that space + ctrl+r = Reply, I can live a bit easier with it. I do wish they increase it, and maybe they will, if enough people complain about it on the general forms of the beta site. After all, during closed beta we talked about how cool it be to do /emotes and sit in a chair. >.> Link to comment
Tagyr Posted September 8, 2010 Share #10 Posted September 8, 2010 I think it also has to do with the future PS3 users who may be working on a smaller television or might have trouble scrolling up and down massive amounts of text using a control. Though I've never used one myself it would seem quite difficult... Link to comment

Tadir Posted September 8, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 8, 2010 Yeah, no fix. And like was just said, for ctrl+r to work you have to open the chat box. So hit space or / then ctrl+r and there ya go. Link to comment

That is why I said above space + ctrl+r Space is very important for all the commands mostly.. expect for Ctrl+t, and ctrl+p.. I don't think.. then again, I do this stuff without thinking I typically don't pay attention to what my hands are doing anymore. o_o Yay for repetition training! Link to comment
Kylin Posted September 8, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 8, 2010 The typing limit is atrocious. It drives me batty. As for the reply (space, ctrl + R), it needs fixed. It seems to only work right now AFTER you send a tell at least once to said person. So for instance, in order to reply to Tadir, I would first have to type out "/t Tadir West blah blah." After I've done that, THEN the reply command starts to work for him. It's really annoying. You should be able to reply to any tell sent to you without typing the name first, just like in FFXI. Tadir Posted September 8, 2010 Share #17 Posted September 8, 2010 Very good point, that. I forgot you had to send a tell to them first. That really does need to be fixed, but then again, so does the stupid character limit. Personally, I would like triple the current limit, but I could deal with double. Link to comment
Koti Nexus Posted September 8, 2010 Share #18 Posted September 8, 2010 Everyone, to the feedback forums on FF14's beta site! We have enough people here to bark at them about it there. (with what? 500-600 people?) Edit: So I went there and gave them a nice list of feedback in their UI section, along with this! = Typing Character Limit It is to short. It takes 2-3 tells in order to go someone simple instructions. 86-90 character limit is not enough when you also have to type in names for tells, and even when you don't have names and just doing general typing, it is to short. After all, even twitter and Cell phone text messengers have at least a 120 character limit, sometimes 150, and nearly all MMORPG, expect for the cheaply done ones, have a good 200-400 character limit in their chat boxes. This should really be looked into and made much larger for text input that way those of us who do have a good grasp on grammar don't have to sound like a 3 year old or some l33t master. Ever tried reading leet? Its a pain. I always try to give them a list of things, that way it never seems I am nit-picking on something. Link to comment

Using ctrl+R, I was able to bring up names of people I had sent a tell to already, but those people had not yet sent me a tell yet, so it is not a "reply". Link to comment
