What do you think of the new "chat" quest in the taverns?

Aside the fact that Level 9 seems a bit late for the game to want to "teach" the new player how to use the /say chat (as if that was really necessary...), what do you think of its location?

I'm personally annoyed that this quest was added in the Adventurers' Guilds. Yes, we're only at the first day of the patch, and in a couple weeks the amount of "Hail fellow well met!" and "You misunderstand" spamming will slow down, but there will always be new players, and the impossibility to "filter" the /say chat for that quest apart from the open-world /say chat often taking place in these sort of.. how to say... RP meccas spots is a small issue that, while not immersion-shattering, is at the very least mildly bothering.

I don't know, what are your thoughts? Should we try and ask for a relocation of the NPCs for this quest to less popular spots, or will the phenomena die down enough to not accidentally mistake a player doing the quest for a new roleplayer attempting an approach? I've opened a threat in the General Discussion forum about this, but didn't get much feedback, so I figured I'd ask direction to the roleplaying community.

As it is right now, I really dislike it, as it causes people to then also chat in /say and such, which is harder to ignore. But even more than that, I just dislike how much of a questhub the inns become, because they're overwhelmingly crowded and it's much harder for me to ignore what I see on screen (also if someone decides to ability spam etc) than what I see in the chatbox. Hopefully it'll die down, but until then I'm going to not be roleplaying around those areas.

I felt exceedingly embarrassed because I couldn't figure out exactly what input SE wanted. With quotes? Without quotes? All punctuation? I even at one point put their entire ".../me" dialogue.

It's so embarrassing when it's in Quicksand ;A;

Kage's not going to be there much right now but... yeah I don't know. There's just way too many people at Quicksand for me to RP there right now.

Don't be embarrassed. My wife tried this quest multiple times and no matter what nothing was happening so I wasn't sure how to make it work either. :(

It took me awhile to figure it out too :P

Heck, its pretty easy to incorporate those people into IC. I mean... we ARE at a bar..

'Hey look at those people over there! They're so drunk they don't even know how to talk right.'

Also, I am so used to tuning out other peoples conversations in taverns that this really doesn't effect me.

I find it irritating, annoying, RP-destroying, and completely unnecessary. I do like the XIV tutorial but chat is one of the most basic elements of an MMO and I guess I find it weird that there's a tutorial to how to use it when the game has already been out for this long. I mean is anyone really benefiting from something like that?

I guess it's fine from a non-RPer's perspective, if a bit silly, but as an RPer I wonder if this will be hub-destroying or not in the long run.

On the plus side, maybe this will force us to look for alternative RP spots.

I think this is an excellent point. In my short time here I have seen many folks talk about roleplaying in only a few specific spots and yet....there's whole world out there and I see fantastic rp places I would love to try. Why always sit in the the Quicksand or the Limsa decks when there are beautiful beaches, tranquil spots in the woods, or even darkened castle settings in Coerthas? Why not play as though researching the crystaline formations in Mor Dhona, or exploring dangerous mines outside of Camp Overlook? I think there are amazing opportunities all over the world and yet I see so many limit it to the same tavern every time and it's a shame because the world....the world is pretty damn amazing. :thumbsup:

*looks around sheepishly*

So, how did you do it?

*Hides*

Gosh. I don't remember what you are suppposed to sah... is it well met?

I think you type Well met.

Just like that. I know for sure there is no quotation marks, but I don't remember if its a period,

an exclamation point, or nothing. If you'd asked me last night, I could've told you... ;_;

Also... I'm sorry but I honestly can't see how this could possibly be hub destroying. If you need that level of immersion around you to rp, then you are in the wrong medium. Do tabletop. Do forum rp. Do skype. An MMO is, and always will be, FULL of distractions because it was NOT made for rpers. If you can't process out what's going on around you in an mmo, then you're not going to have a good time. I don't react to every FATE that pops up in the middle of an rp... I don't react to trolls who craft on the middle of the table I am rping at.... it didn't bother me that they set up a beginners quest in the middle of mhi khetto theater...

It would be like going to a packed sports stadium and asking everyone to quiet down so you could read.... everyone is there to enjoy the game, not to pander to someone's unrelated hobby. MMO rp will always have an element of chaos, and if we as rpers are unable to handle that, then we need to use other forms of rp , made specifically for us.

Honestly it was annoying but it's just things that I decided to just ignore/go along with.

I see plenty of people who use /say for regular conversations so as long as it's not directed at me or spamming me I don't care.

I believe it went like... target him. Don't use the quotes

"Well met!"

"/me"

There might have been other dialogue... and then the standard auto translate stuff that should work.

But those two were things that got me ><

You target him and then type. You use punctuation and capital letters.

Well met.

I could -feel- your judging when I was doing it. I still can.

/headdesks

I'm still sure that I did it with capital letters and punctuation after I targeted him but. Well obviously I did something wrong or I wouldn't have /say Well met! 353543 times in Quicksand last night.

I'm surely good to hear these responses and see that there are other roleplayers willing to RP elsewhere and different stuff from drinking at the adventurer's guild. I had actually gotten disheartened by that some months ago, which is what led me to sort of leave the forums and stop checking with the RPC. I had actually begun giving tavern-RP a new go just last week (without much luck, see the "Confused and Frustrated thread"), and I found almost humorous that SE decided to disrupt the place right as I try to hang out in there for the first time since launch <_<;

Hopefully though, I will find more open-world RP elsewhere, where other stuff than sitting and drink can happen!

Personally, I just find it really weird to have a quest that teaches you how to use /say. Does SE really think their players are that dumb? xD

[edit] On second thought, I think more than teaching us /say, that quest was actually SE lecturing us on manners. Overbearing mother-devs are kind of weird.
