Favorite Let's Plays and Speedruns

Recommended Posts

Since I've been planning to become an LPer I started watching a variety of channels. So far though Markiplier will always be on my top favorite, he has a likeable personality!

I generally don't mind Markiplier. He's... certainly better than PewDiePie.

PewDiePie is nice for one thing only. Hilarity. Ridiculous hilarity when I want to feel stupid.

The only times I didn't like Markiplier is sometimes his mic audio is super loud in comparison. And so his screams hurt my ears. >.>;

Also. /whisper Five Nights at Freddy's 3 Part 2 is now up >.>

Horror games are abig reason why I watch LPs xD; Someone else can dela with the atmospheric scares or the jumpscares. Or the fac that I have the shittiest aim so they can play The Last of Us for me too.

BroTeam and Two Best Friends are my standard go-to's. The Fate Of series on BroTeam's channel is spectacular, in particular.

Also, while not technically a Let's Play channel, Retsuprae is amazing and I get plenty of laughs out of them.

Madda agrees with everyone in that list.

FNAF3 is out????

Let's see how far Mark goes this time, I couldn't play through day two on the first game TT.TT

This is exactly why I let Cry, Markiplier... and PewDiePie to play these games for me >.>;

Good lord I'm not really enjoying myself for 3 so far lol (at least I don't have to spaz about bonnie)(NOPE BALLON BOY IS SPOOKING ME)

Wondering if there's going to be a steam train episode of this

I only watch FunHaus (previously Inside Gaming), but they're not really a "let's play" channel...

And I'm really boring and I don't know why I have subscribers but *clears throat, unsubtle and shameless self promotion*

I also stream (MOSTLY) daily during the week at around 7-8:30 PM EST

I don't watch LPs.

I do, however, watch a metric fuckton of speedruns. Mostly attempts or practice runs on Twitch. It started out by a streamer I followed randomly hosting Scrubathon, me sticking around and then someone mentioning Land Blitzball which is my favorite game of all time.

So essentially, if I don't catch it live I don't tend to watch it unless it's a fucking awesome highlight. Or a game I really enjoy. Here's a list of people I regularly watch :

BOWIEtheHERO / Gerrick1 / TheLCC are currently running Shadow Hearts series speedruns, which tend to be in the 6-7 hour mark these days. I wub that series very much okay?

Highspirits has to rise up in my favorites because he doesn't give a fuck how long a speedrun of a game is, if he likes the game he will attempt it. Which is why he has the current Dragon Warrior 7 WR at 15:57:41 as well as the current Lunar 1-2 WR.

bichphuongballz is just extremely entertaining in my opinion even if, in his own words, he is bad at games. He'll also typically race anyone in RPGs he practices.

eLmaGus is a bit more known, but will generally host/raid a lot of people, so chances are you'll encounter a lot of up-and-coming runners.

CaptClever was at AGDQ and ran Commander Keen this year - But he also runs very old school FPSes and is currently working on Prince of Persia (DOS) for SGDQ. Every sunday night he goes (at least I think he still does) through Commander Keen 1-6 + side game. Old school PC goodness.

That's nowhere near the level of people I follow but yeah : Those are generally good, and they host other people you might want to watch.

For the most part, I don't have the patience for full, multi part playthroughs. I prefer the videos where they've cut the funnier/wittier portions and compiled them into something that's no longer than 20-30 minutes.

Compiled stuff is pretty good too, if you're interested in the commentary and the more memorable parts of a game.

Personally, though, I find it's about the game just as much as the person playing it, if not more so. So I'm watching it in part for the LPer's comments and insight and reactions, and in part to experience the game. Which I suppose might be why I dislike it when it's more about the LPer than the game, or when they're too focused on their own antics to pay attention to the game.

I mean seriously, Game Grumps is notorious for this (especially in the older ones). They get mad and yell at a game for not telling them where to go when they missed blatant clues and NPCs giving them what they need because they were too focused on their jokes. They can be funny at times, mind you, but I find some of their best stuff is when they're either playing a game them know like the back of their hand (Mario Bros 2 comes to mind) or one that's so simplistic and linear that they can focus on their antics without hindering gameplay (ex. Kirby's Epic Yarn).

I know I probably shouldn't complain. I've only done one LP and it was a doofy little screenshot dealie. And enough people seem to enjoy their work to make all these Game Grumps Animateds. I just... I dunno. Their approach rubs me the wrong way, so I don't really watch them anymore.

Well, I can't comment on Game Grumps at all, like I mentioned I only ever watch a few LPs (cr1tikal, tbfp, vinesauce). I mean, I've seen one or two of their videos, like the infamous sonic 06 "line in the sand" speech which I did think was pretty hysterical. But yeah, I can't really address your grievances there.

We just have different things we are looking to get out of these videos, and that's perfectly fine. I'm looking for something funny, something that will make me laugh. Automatically that means I am drawn to the banter, to clever and well delivered lines, to moments in the game that facilitate this- which is why length is a turn off, you can't expect anyone to keep up consistent hilarity while staying on point for an entire game's play through. You are instead looking to experience the game, this means you might be more likely to be put off by excessive banter or things that take attention from the play instead of adding to it- you probably want something more immersive. In either case, the LP community is so large by now that we both get plenty of what we want.

It's sometimes hard to watch the horror Let's Plays with Jumpscares.

Cause I still get scared. :(

that's why I liked the cr1tikal play of fnaf. He's just so unimpressed with jump scares it saps any scariness right out. Plus, he tells great stories.

I adore Cr1itikal. He's the only LP'er I am subscribed to and watch. I recently did a marathon through most of his videos and need to get back to finishing it off soon. I can see how he might not fit everyones' tastes but he is just really entertaining for me, even if vulgar and crude at times.

Plus.... he's just genuinely such a really, nice guy. With not keeping a cent of his partnership earnings and his naive aspirations with regards world corruption. It's just so endearing. Not forgetting the very seldom time you hear him laugh, the WHOLE comments section just bursts to life commenting on how it was such a mounumental occasion and how cute it was, hahaha.

Not that this is the best example, but it's one of the most recent I had watched before stopping I think, and the point at around 7:20 just cracked me up with the way he speaks(and his choice of words).

This is basically what you can expect for any scary game with it comes to Cr1itikal, Kage, even jumpscares.

(Skip to around 7:00 or 7:20 and stop watching shortly after his encounter, if you wish to stop at all)

(For a non-scary video, watch this from... lets say 3:00 to the end just so you get a bit of context. Maybe it's just me but the last enemy and his following rant just slayed me)

So I checked my subscriptions page, and saw that Geek & Sundry was up. it has Felicia Day and I've been very interested in some of their tabletop showcases.

What caught my attention was this Let's Play today. It's for Hatoful Boyfriend. xD; ((I'm sorry but I really actually quite enjoyed the story-telling in this visual novel "dating sim" I mean, it's completely ridiculous but the story is interesting.))

Stumbled across an old favorite couple of LPs today, both done by the same pair of people:

Rockman Exhaust

Rockman Minimum

It's ROMhacks, sure, but there's some amusing little antics in the editing the two do. A personal favorite is Punch Donkey in the Wily 1 bit in Rockman Exhaust. Some of the little antics are put in so fluidly that you don't even notice them sometimes, it's pretty great.

I've also been watching TeamFourStar's playthrough of Dragonball Xenoverse and enjoying that one quite a bit. Mostly because of their character and the voice they have bequeathed upon him. Good ol' Dumplin.
