NA Adventurers! Looking for RP? New to RP? Welcome to Mateus!
Greenley replied to M'naase Rahz's topic in RP Discussion
I can make a pretty educated guess that people on Mateus stay in our discord / don't post here because people on Mateus are like those on Balmung and have jobs, kids, school, life, and they don't want to spend their leisure time coming here and repeating themselves again and again, much less when some people seem determined to be offended. I can't even post in the PuG rant thread about an overzealous healer without it becoming, "But hey, what's up with Mateus being such a mess amirite?" No thanks. I'm speaking more generally than to any one person and I'm sure it will read more snappy than intended, though make no mistake this is tiring and I am tired of it. I've tried to be active in these forums because although it's unfair to expect the discord to not have any road bumps (there are hundreds of us now, after all), I don't like the idea of it seeming like the Mateus community "belongs" to any group of people or that any group of people are in charge of it, no matter how long they've been here or how level-headed they are. Because the server belongs to SE, period, and Balmung people have every right to play it on. And Mateus natives or transfers should have every right to disagree with the consensus of aforementioned discord and not be ostracized from the community for it. Which isn't something I've seen happen, but is always a risk of becoming the norm when a community melds into one primary group and people get the impression that group is law. However, ironically, I often feel unwelcome here as someone from Mateus, and somewhat hypocritically, my opinion of Balmung has become sour to the point I question my ability to continue speaking objectively. So this is my last post in this thread on this topic. My final note is to say I still welcome all the transfers and they're free to get in contact with me for any reason at any time. I'm not in charge because no one is in charge, but I'll be happy to help you get settled in Mateus if needed. -
It's come to my attention that Grapevine's host character will be on excavation with his FC the entire week including Sunday. Oops. Due to his inability to clone himself (slacker), the event will be moved to Monday, the 10th at the following times: 7 EST 6 CST 5 MST 4 PST I'll be contacting all guards / participants who'd planned to attend Sunday to confirm this new time works for them, but anyone who sees this ahead of time, please feel free to contact me and let me know if this is the case for you. Likewise to those who were unable to make Sunday but could make the new time. Edit: Phone formatting is magic.

This may get some spite directed my way, but to be honest I think people in general are overreacting, at least to a degree. When you have more than two people in a room, you can all but guarantee there will be disagreements. That's with two people. There are already hundreds of RPers on Mateus. To see one, two, even three people say something and take it as gospel, to let it form opinions on an entire community or subject matter... I don't know. Seems very silly to me. Please note I'm not speaking to only you directly in this matter, nor dismissing your RL woes (I understand those very well on a personal level, you can take my word on that that), but it's a game and people are going to argue. There's only so many times I and other people from Mateus can tell you (again, general you, not you specifically) that the majority of us are not like this before 1. It starts getting frustrating on our end and 2. We just start giving up in light of that. This gets very tiring. Someone shit talks Balmung and they're dogpiled on. Someone does the same about Mateus and there seems to be some unspoken (and ofttimes spoken) expectation we must rush in to defend our server and reassure people repeatedly. This has to go both ways. There has to be a little give on the other end where people say, "Well, one person treated me like dirt, but I've seen four people post on the forums welcoming me. I've had a dozen or more welcome me in the LS I joined. The Discord has been good to me. I guess I won't let this one person control my opinion here." -
Posting twice like the scum of the Earth that I am. As an additional note, we'll also be seeking paid security. Contact me here or on discord if you have a character who would be available / interested in this.

All right, folks. Our goal is now the following: Sunday, July 9th 2 - 4 PM PST 5 - 7 PM EST 4 - 6 PM CST 3 - 5 PM MST I'm pretty sure these conversions are all correct. Someone smack me if I'm wrong. I will be contacting anyone who asked about it throughout the week to make sure they're still interested and fully expect at least a few will end up being busy at that time, so anyone who wants to tag along, let me know ASAP. If I haven't talked to you already and you want to contact me first (here or Discord would be best), that'd be super helpful, but I'll get to everyone eventually either way. If this goes smoothly this will likely become our regular time, though we haven't decided yet on weekly or bi-weekly.

This person whining does not speak for all of us (nor do I, but that's kind of the point I'm making here). I would ask the Balmung people not use this single person as an example of how we all behave as I've seen time and again, especially the ones who have not been on the server or have played an alt on it for all of twenty minutes. We have our issues. A little bit of the salt seen here and some questionable censorship in the Discord as of late are the primary two, but beyond that this is a great server. When I very first joined I had full intent of eventually leaving for what I perceived to be the greener pastures that are Balmung, but I can't imagine leaving Mateus now. I'm still excited to roll an alt on Balmung when it opens (or transfer one, technically), but Mateus is my home. It's the home of a lot of people who aren't members here but would say what I'm saying if they were. Please do come here. It's true we need crafters, but as another person said, RPers are a reliable playerbase and already there is a rise in them. It's true the housing is full, but the flippers aren't quite as gil thirsty as they are on Balmung as of this moment, so it's still hardly a pipe dream, and apartments are everywhere. Take it from someone who checks on housing every day and saw a medium plot in the Mists for sale not two days ago or so. The whiners are leaving and will continue to leave. Don't let them be a factor in your decision if you're considering a transfer or if you're brand new and trying to find a place to go. -
Can't say I'm too thrilled with this development or consider it the best means, but I suppose if it lessens the queues for the people on Balmung I'm willing to be aggravated once a day if it's only temporary. If nothing else I'm curious to see if this will actually work. I recall on FFXI that after maintenance, the bots and AFKers were right back on the servers within minutes. By and large they seemed to be the sorts of people who would / could simply come back just long enough to log back in. I couldn't say if this is the case with Balmung but I'm certainly curious.

I've already said my bit on this issue so I'll copy-paste my reply from another thread: -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Greenley replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Aye, would never claim otherwise. I actually play all three -- DPS, tank, healer all, in that order -- so I've seen this happen from every angle. But this is my current personal gripe, so I griped. -
I can see you're on Mateus so I'm sure you'll find all the help you need, as people here are overall very enthused to absorb newcomers into collective whole. I mean that in a good way, mind. Mateus has recently had a surge of incoming new people and transfers from other servers due to bonuses we were given, an act of SE trying to even out server populations on the high pop places like Balmung. It's a great time to join because any new characters you roll will be getting those bonuses and leveling will be a breeze. My advice is try to get your crafting up ASAP as well as your job classes while aforementioned bonuses are in place. There's been RP on this server for some time, but since it's only recently grown this much, we're still finding our footing in some ways. Lately you can find people RPing at Quicksands (a location in Ul'dah) in the mid-day and evening hours pretty regularly, though you'll have those sticks in the mud who insist to stay away from there because it's full of degenerates, public orgies, yadda yadda. Hyperbole if you ask me, but I digress. The RP scene of private taverns (those in the housing district), RP FCs, RP LSs, and server events is very and increasingly active. Coordination could be a little better here as compared to our sister server Balmung, but it's being worked on and looks incredibly promising. I have nothing but praise for the efforts thus far. Some of the issues you'll encounter here are a vocal minority of RPers that hate both Balmung transfers and even those who have gotten the game recently but started on Mateus because they're feeling territorial for X, Y, Z reason. Tell them to stfu or ignore them, whichever suits you best. As to making connections, it's pretty easy if you put the legwork in. There's a Making Connections sub here I've used with success, and Mateus has its own Mateus Hub discord open to all RPers with channels including one for that, one for server events, among others. The majority of our organization on all fronts seems to occur on there. Hope you like it here!

I've no doubt this sentiment has been said here before ad nauseam, but shout out to all the healers who insist you as a tank "Pull more!" then after you pull the exact number you know you can survive, they run and get more, killing everyone. Thanks, guy. -
NA Adventurers! Looking for RP? New to RP? Welcome to Mateus!
Greenley replied to M'naase Rahz's topic in RP Discussion
Oh heavens I hope my post didn't seem like a naysayer, I apologize if it did. I'm spending far more time on Mateus than I have even been able to Balmung, and at this point I'm highly thinking of calling my character on Mateus my main, I only brought up and showed that screen shot, because it's unsettling to see that when your happy minding your own business and people crap all over you whether intentionally or not. I highly doubt the people speaking knew I was a Balmung transfer as I ran by, nor do I think they cared, but it's kind of unnerving to feel unwelcomed like that out of the blue. Other than this one experience I've enjoyed my time on Mateus so far and I've gotten a few tells complimenting my character etc. So in no way shape or form am I bashing it, but if problems aren't brought to the forefront they fester and get worse. The issue here is the problems have been brought to the forefront. Often and repeatedly. There is more than one thread about this, take a look around and you'll see them. It has been discussed in this thread already. There has been talk of it on the Mateus discord, too. People are aware. Very much so. I realize now it wasn't your intention but at this point posts that ring of "Look what Mateus did! Look what mean things Mateus said about Balmung!" and nothing else seem not only to be beating a dead horse but dragging its corpse through the mud. To people who otherwise know nothing about us, this should not be the only impression they are given to work with, because it's a false one. -

Mateus already has a great community. Those people are an annoying, vocal minority. Emphasis on the minority. I have and will continue to defend Balmung -- ask pretty much any LS I've been involved with on any of my characters, and I defended it in this very thread too -- but it's getting a bit, no, extremely tiresome to see Mateus' people feeling obligated to come here and repeat over and over (and over and over) again that most of us don't behave this way. It isn't a one way street. Not in the slightest. I have no shortage of stories about obnoxious Balmung people already, people who log on Mateus and demand in map chat we "give them a reason" to stay, as if we're some lowly last resort who must prove our worth to any complete stranger from The Real RP Server who graces us with their presence. This is not something I saw once. I have personally encountered it four times now and have heard of other incidents. There people here on the forums who needlessly dismiss us with words like "temporary" or come off as incredibly condescending, intentionally or not, to our efforts. And frankly, we have gotten our fair share of what I'm going to blatantly deem attention whores from Balmung. I don't mean the people helping us out by running events. I mean the ones who realize the community is smaller and more opportunities are available, so they roll an alt, start an FC, LS, and/or plot(s), then go back to Balmung and only return to Mateus when they need their next fix of the spotlight that for whatever reason they're not getting there. Then they have the audacity to boast they are "helping" us when it is painfully obvious their motives are self-centered. It comes off akin to people who post cringe-worthy paragraphs about BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE!!!1 on Facebook each time they hand a homeless person a sandwich. Some transfers to Mateus are just salty former Balmung people who had one bad thing happen to them and now they trash the server. But there are plenty of people who have either been on Mateus a long time or started there and even though I don't support their bashing, I have come to understand why they might do so whereas I didn't before. I have and will continue to take the "Can we not?" approach when the Balmung hate starts to stir, but I think a lot of transfers or people looking in from the outside are completely clueless as to the nonsense we have to deal with from the other side. Hell, in this very thread, after the OP had apologized, people still jumped down her throat. Because Balmung. I don't mean to ruffle feathers but it's starting to feel as if our valid grievances are being completely overlooked or simply ignored by large margin of people who keep complaining about our Balmung-hate while consistently failing to mention all the good things about us, of which there are many. Most don't even seem to give themselves the time to find the good to begin with. Some don't seem to want to find it and are just looking for "Mateus hates Balmung u gais!" fodder. If you ask me, that attitude is no less divisive and it's about time we acknowledge it instead of just creating an echo chamber of why Mateus is a bunch of meanies who are shooting themselves in the foot. -
Hey all! Between the posts here and people contacting me through discord and PMs, we should have more than enough people for our first event provided there aren't half a dozen no shows. We still don't have a set date due to Stormblood's impending release and all the chaos that may well entail for the servers, but if people would like to start giving us a general idea of what days and times work best for them so we can get a sort of consensus, we would be more than happy to hear your take on things. Additionally, we will probably be looking for more hosts in the future. The RP community has expanded rapidly in just the past week and we're all busier with our characters than we ever imagined we would be on this server. As always feel free to post here, PM me, or get in touch on discord at Greenley#0160

Hello! Chances are if you're here it's from one of the Mateus discords or OOC RP linkshells. I'm looking for connections for my decided three mains. (That's right, three mains. Fight me.) I consider myself a heavy RPer, but not to the point that the occasional OOC joke or comment breaks MUH IMMERSION!!1 I abide by the lore the best I can and prefer to RP with those who do as well. Bending it occasionally is fine. I play the game quite a lot, but the nature of my work means my schedule can sometimes vary, so I can't give any set hours as to when I'm available for RP on any given day until usually a day or two in advance. The best way to contact me is either to message me here or hit me up on discord at Greenley#0160 as opposed to in game. I am always open to general RP, especially outside the taverns. These are the characters I'm seeking connections for: Bray: Bard. Gambling addict. Curious about pretty much everything. Tahla: Former poacher. Private Third Class Twin Adder. Blooming Conjurer. Nicholas: Free Paladin. Jaded. Obsessed with attaining knowledge on Ifrit / tempering.

Not sure either. Yara has already apologized, multiple times now. All the offended Balmungnites can crawl out of her rear and leave her be now, 'mmkay? The apologies are still valid whether or not you personally got your shots in. For those asking about housing, last I checked, the apartments were still so widely available it's not really worth the time of making a list. But here is the available housing at the time of writing with mediums specified: THE GOBLET MISTS Full, unfortunately. LAVENDER BEDS -
Having explored practically all of Lavender Beds and the Mists housing so far, I can say we do have a tendency to leave food sitting out (especially cakes), so there's that. Welcome to Mateus, all.

_______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ What is it? The Grapevine is a social event akin to speed dating, sans the dating. The goal is not to be large or extravagant, but to promote RP with people you may have not otherwise come across in an event light on chat scroll and heavy on individual attention. How does it work? The Grapevine is hosted by one of four people with a cap of eight participants per event (not including the host). There are four tables with two chairs each. Participants are placed in their seats at random both IC and OOC. This is not an event intended to have people stand and chatter with those they already know! Every 30 minutes (Earth time), those in the leftmost chair rotate. IC, there are alarms on each of the tables to let characters know how far into their time they are and there will also be OOC reminders from the host. The event lasts two hours, for a total of four rotations. If chat scroll still becomes an issue (the apartments aren't large, after all), players will be encouraged to party with those across the table and emote / say only things everyone else in the room would notice, such as throwing their arms up or shouting. When is it? The first event is TBA. For several obvious reasons, we'll wait for the Stormblood rush to pass. Where is it? Lily Hills in Lavender Beds, Ward 9, Apartment 14 FAQ I'm worried about taking up a slot. What if I can't make it last minute? Fear not, RL happens. Ideally, there will eventually be enough interest we'll have a waiting list. If a participant drops out, we'll go down the waiting list until we find someone interested in joining that day. If all else fails, the host will join the rotation to even out the numbers. However, if you know for a fact there are 80% odds you won't be able to make it, please don't take up a slot. How do you decide which people participate? We're operating on a first come, first serve basis for the time being. If you're the first to get in contact, you're the first on the list. I want to join, but my character isn't the type to go to this of their own accord. If your character realistically would not volunteer themselves after seeing a flyer, they may be harassed into going by a family member / friend, already know one of the hosts (obviously requires some OOC discussion first), or they were randomly pulled in off the streets after a no-show to even out the numbers. We'll do our best to accommodate different character personalities. How do I contact you guys? For the time being, please either PM me here, post in this thread, or whisper Bray Thatcher in-game. Did you know the apartment name is spelled wrong? We do. The SE filter does not allow use of the word "grape" in naming housing. It's now an IC joke the sign maker spelled it wrong. Your character is free to notice IC. Rules --- This is a strictly lore-friendly/abiding event. For certain issues this is obviously a matter of opinion, but things like white mages, cyborgs from the future, long lost siblings to important NPCs, and other things of that nature are not permitted. --- Please do your best on the grammar / spelling front. Perfection is by no means necessary, but posts such as ".........................oh.............." yeah, let's avoid that. --- No bombings, people falling over from a wound they haven't gotten treated, or other abrupt spikes of drama without first clearing it with the host. --- Less-than-friendly, racist, and so forth characters are welcome to join within reason. If your Highlander has nothing nice to say about anyone and has a seething hatred for all of society to the point they will contribute nothing to the event, leave them home. If for example they have an aversion to Miqo'te and will act more standoffish when paired with one compared to another race, this is completely fine.

Right? If anyone from the Moral Guardian crowd thinks everyone's characters on Mateus are celibate asexuals, whether compared to Balmung or not, boy do I have bad news for you. If you think that's the case I invite you to have so much as a fleeting glance at the Discord NSFW chat. I'm not directing this at Yara, but speaking generally, because I've seen three people say similar things in the last two days. Since apologies have been had I have nothing else to add, but I will repeat what I've said here on any thread I see like this because hurting the community hurts mine and my friends' RP, and it's the entire reason I joined this MMO and not one of several alternatives. I don't want to have to go to Balmung to get regular RP outside of a group of the same few dozen people. -
NA Adventurers! Looking for RP? New to RP? Welcome to Mateus!
Greenley replied to M'naase Rahz's topic in RP Discussion
As fresh Mateus native I personally appreciate any effort to promote the server because more RP for everyone means more RP for me, but this is not the attitude we should be presenting, much less on forums that are so heavily tilted in Balmung's favor at present. Many people who have been helping us here are from Balmung, or are Balmung people rolling alts, or they've moved / will move entirely but still understandably have a soft spot for their original server. Really, people, stop saying things like this. While I've never played on Balmung, I have seen a lot of it due to the person who got me into this game being from there. Mateus is neither better (let alone "WAY BETTER") nor worse. It is different. Let's stop this ridiculous server rivalry trend. Balmung needs Mateus or when it opens again people will flood their server and they'll be right back to the issues they're having now. Mateus needs Balmung if it has any hope of ever having plentiful, varied events and FCs -- though I understand some people would prefer to be an oh-so-exclusively sandbox, but well, I'm not talking to those sorts. I'm afraid you'll just have to learn to share. The focus should be "Welcome to Mateus!" not "lol Balmung suxorz amirite?" To anyone reading this from Balmung who is now concerned about joining us, this is not the prevailing attitude at all. I and many others welcome all of you and have nothing but respect for your server. -
I just have to reply to this because I'm sick of seeing people make this argument. This is an extremely privileged opinion. I've known people who budgeted very, very carefully to be able to afford their monthly sub, and even then, sometimes they had to let it lapse for a month or two when an unexpected expense came up. Eighteen dollars might not seem like much to you, but for some people, it can be the difference between solvency and overdrawing their bank account. Also, making judgments about what kinds of games other people should invest in given their financial situation is presumptuous. If someone enjoys playing FFXIV enough to make room for it in a very tight budget, good for them. They deserve nice things too. I second this. I rarely use terms such as privileged and gatekeeping because in my eyes they are more and more becoming embellished buzzwords thrown around by teenagers and adults who ofttimes act like teenagers. Having said that, if this isn't an example of both, I don't know what it is. I respect your fierce honesty, Momo, as I'm of the opinion it's something the world needs a lot more of when constructive. But this isn't, nor is it a matter of not being "nice." You are speaking out of ignorance for the lives of those not as fortunate as yourself. I for one was not only ready to pay to get into Balmung but to pay for four of my friends' server switches as well. To some of them, $18 is quite a bit of money. This does not and should not bar them from being able to play a game that makes them happy. Happy people are productive people. Happy people are those who have the energy / good spirits / inspiration to change their lives for the better. I'm not going to be nice about this: If you feel you have the right to judge how people spend their money and leisure time because they don't have as much of it as you, because their situation is not as you put as stabilized as yours, you're acting like a jerk. While honesty is something to be proud of, that is not.
-
Welcome to Mateus! I hope you enjoy it. It shows a lot of promise.
-
Thanks for hosting this. Having been a part of the RP community on several games, I'm always thrilled to see events beyond the standard tavern nights (not that those aren't grand) and I could tell there was a lot of work put into this.
-
I wasn't aware of this, so thanks for clearing that up. For clarity to my post I'm referring to the Mateus RP Hub and have no experience with the other. I apologize to Foxfire if he has nothing to do with that chat and/or the moderating of said chat. I stand by the point I was making, however: If people are to speak up they must be allowed to without tiptoeing across eggshells sprinkled across a field of LEGO. To mute constructive criticism and respond "Well we're not Balmung so stfu lulz" without counterargument benefits no one in the long run except the people who want the server to just be them and their small group of friends. And if that's the case they have no place running a server-wide Discord.
