  1. V is for VICTORY (fanfare)! kHx5hCVN26E
  2. 2PM? Hm. I'd better stock up on Monsters! Looks like I'll be pulling a 24-hour day, then, that Sunday (I work all night from 11pm Sat to 11am Sun EST)! I couldn't bear missing a big event right out of the gate!
  3. Oh, don't get me wrong. If I can't justify something within the confines of lore, I won't do it. I'm not about to go off and say I'm the son/daughter/shemale-first-cousin of and and also have a machine gun implanted in my forehead that no one can see without 3D glasses. lol But there's a point to which hostility breeds fear breeds oppression of creativity and imagination, and then the cycle persists, even when concepts are actually viable. People begin to see red flags when there are none, and then proceed to make like a Weasel and flip the fuck out. =-B Oh, definitely - a lot of the character concepts that role-players get up in arms about being 'against the lore' aren't even all that improbable. So long as exceptions to the rule don't become the norm I'm generally willing to give quite a lot of character concepts a chance. I don't really like ignoring anything outright unless it's particularly immersion breaking, since if I'm uncomfortable with a character concept I tend to just have my character make his excuses and dash off on an errand elsewhere. Yeah, that's exactly it, though when I have a problem with someone's character concept, I will attempt to politely point it out OOCly and try to suggest something similar, yet more fitting to the world. Some people, unfortunately, will simply cuss someone out as if their very idea was a crime intended to hurt the RP around them, when, in many cases, they are simply new or younger people without a clear definition of the lore. I've seldom gotten a poor response (save for the case of several notorious folks *shudder*), though there are those who will immediately become offended. Unfortunately, those are just as bad as the ones who go after other guns blazing. Regardless! It's nice to, thus far, see a notable lack of both sides of that ugly coin, at least around here.

  5. Yeah. It got so bad to a point on WoW that our guild started cracking down on "questionable" RP elements that would draw ire from the lore-thumpers and closed-minded. It was disgusting. At one point, my engineer, also named Corelyn (she's the original - genius with Titan technology - she has an entire massive complex beneath Quel'thalas where she hides. It's taken her YEARS to construct and she's still building lots of it, ICly) built an android construct. It didn't have synthesized flesh or anything. It was, in all actuality, a robot with concealing armour so you couldn't tell -what- it was, though it had an elven frame so it could be subtle. I got guff not from other people, but from -my own guild- because they were afraid of what others would think. It's a sad state that RP has gotten to in WoW. The same happened with my Death Knight, who is really more a placeholder for an undead elven battlemage. But I can't say he's "not a Death Knight ICly" for whatever reason because people are paranoid about Death Knight RP. ...man, am I glad I am leaving WoW for this. This is WORLDS better by comparison thus far. It's so refreshing to see a community so open to ideas, speculation, and, best of all, roleplaying and imaginative freedom (because, really, isn't that what RP is ABOUT?)!
  6. Wow, this this this! This was idea in creating this thread. It is really a place to say hey, this is Final Fantasy. We have a rich history to draw on here to help create from! It was not easy for me at first during 1.0 coming on here and saying I was going to play a samurai. However, as the community has grown, there have been people here that have come into the fold who have been very welcoming of the ideas of looking into the history of Final Fantasy and traditional RP character styles for aid in fleshing out their characters. I made this thread to help show that you are welcome here and you do have a place! There is more to fostering a good community then just saying 'welcome to the RPC, choose a server and jump in!' As far as going down the Mime path....YES! It would be one of the coolest things to RP play in game. That is to use the game to actually RP it like a Mime in game. There are many ways to pull it off, and there are many people here smarter then me to come up with the best ways to do it! It is just like playing samurai for me. Yeah, I am giving up the shield and going only sword as gladiator until the actual job gets in game. I know that gets me bumped off the end game list for just about any raiding party, but hey, this is a game. I give it up willing because RP is the what I love the most. That being said, nothing wrong with someone else who wants to pick up the shield and play as a samurai too. If it makes you happy and is not hurting anyone else, do it. I would love to hear you ideas for how to tackle Mime! Does 70% of the server hate you or your character? Or not distinguish between the two? Waaaay back when I did Dragonriders of Pern play-by-email RP, I loved playing villains and annoying characters, but a lot of other players had trouble distinguishing OCC and IC and took it personal when my character was an asshole. Does that happen in MMO RPG? In a word.......yes. I did it, and many have probs being different to you ooc and icc. Also, not everyone icc will recognize you as some great, semi-powerful villain. Just like in choosing a linkshell, it is best to find a group of people to see you as a icc bad dude and not the same ooc. Also, they will help build up your rep as a villain by RPing you as someone who is not a nice person and not to be messed with. It is all about finding the right group if you want to go down this path. I encourage you to do it if it is what you want to do and to seek the people who will allow you to be what you desire to be here to maximize your experience as your character! Yeah, there are a whole lot of people, unfortunately, out there who just can't tell OOC from IC. They are... usually best avoided if incapable of understanding or seeing proper reason. I've wound up in tangles with MANY people like that in my years of WoW RP, sadly. However, you can't let a one or even a few people like that sour an experience overall. You get them everywhere. It may be me, but it also seems a bit more common an attitude on MMOs because of the inherent competitive nature of many activities, which can bring that out in even some more reserved people.
  7. Yes. I made this just for this occasion. Yes. You may have it.
  8. This, exactly. I am so used to the lore hounds of WoW. There is just so much of it, and people expect you to keep to it with such a vengeance, it's a tough and very cliquey RP community nowadays. This is giving me a LOT of hope for FFXIV RP. And to think a friend of mine was convinced that there would be none! Now if only Squeenix would tie in some Al Bhed references... E fyhd yh eqlica du cbayg ed eh-lynyldan... ;
  9. Cults and such are actually not very hard to start up RP-wise, especially if you keep them on the down-low and come up with good ideas to keep them subtle and difficult to notice. I'm currently, before release, finishing up a MASSIVE storyline on WoW of a bunch of demon-tainted druids led by one ancient evil. Why has Azeroth at large not known of this threat until it finally started attacking the world at large? "The veil of absurdity" as it's been called. The cultists spread rumours of a thing called "Dogelf" - a being whose very existence sounded so obnoxiously uncreative as to be unbelievable - though the Hound of Nightmare, an ancient Druid of Goldrinn, stuck halfway between wolfform and having forsaken his former druidic ways for a twisted, demonic version between Nightmare magic and fel (demonic) magic, is very real. Most of the storyline was actually several characters who HAD run into his traps and tricks attempting to prove his existence, but now he's corrupted various members of the RP guild, and one of the most powerful druids they employ has been taken. The final battle's coming up soon. =-3 Really, it had some solid basis in lore, but only enough to explain his existence and power. Farther than that, it's entirely been RP. Best part is, it all started from a joke I started when we were running around as a trio of hyperactive goblins hellbent on "smashing" things. Good times. Goes to show you, though, you can make a villain or even a massive organization of them out of thin air. The world at large can be ignorant of it, in denial of its existence, or they could simply have their hands tied. However, you can always say that some small groups of nameless NPCs from certain groups or factions come to fight without bending or breaking lore too terribly. It's all in the backstory!
  10. Really like the idea of making the Tellah idea a bit your own and having those experiments maybe turn out not so well. Adds a comic quirk to your character and reminds me of old Doc Brown: Gotta love his zany ways! Kinda like Tellah I guess in that way! I say go forward with this all the way! Also, yes I do hope the defector tag will be picked up by somebody here and ran with. I REALLY want to meet someone like that in game. That would have such great RP arcs to play off of! On a side note, thanks to everyone for really making this thread explode! It is nice to see creative minds (no, not me, you guys!) getting energized and letting ideas poor out of themselves! I hope we have more threads like this in the future to really welcome creativity here! Again, thanks all of you! Let's keep this going! Konner Indeed. I can see a lot of good RP with Garlean conflict overtones. Especially if Magitek/gunblades become available for use eventually. I've considered chalking her physical weakness up to magitek implants that she refuses to keep active for fear of being discovered/outed/etc, or just general disdain for Garlemald after some sort of altercation that led to her seeking asylum in Eorzea (namely Limsa Lominsa) in an attempt to remake herself and pursue her love and interests in arcanima. ...wasn't me. This time.
  11. I'm kind of tossing the idea around of Corelyn having been a Garlean defector, but I'm not so sure yet. I'm largely still doing a lot of research on Hydaelyn lore and such. She's somewhat like the sage character, though, in that she's always experimenting with glyphs and runes and such with her arcanima and... they don't always turn out how she expects.
  12. Ooh, I love music assignment! Lessee... Corelyn - Ambient (ie, Intro, moment of brilliance, etc.): Hcj7dVA8Mr8 Brilliant, yet quirky. Reserved, yet still cheerful in her own way. Corelyn - Dire combat (ie, back-against-the-wall sort of situation): 7ef7r7VCbz4 Once she pulls herself together... shit's gonna get real, very fast. I can't really do theme songs until I -really- solidify her personality. That comes with RP and time. The original (WoW) Corelyn's theme really doesn't fit this one. As for other characters... I think I'll save it. X-D
  13. Pretty much this. You will encounter trolls and griefers on every realm. Even if SE made official RP servers, you'd find them there too. World of Warcraft has official RP realms, and let me tell you. They are FULL of jerks who just spend their day trolling RPers. Yeah. The worst of them are the people who -act- like they're RPing but really are just there to frustrate everyone else by ERPing in public or generally just being... terrible. "How do I know your name? Why, I can see it above your head!" *shudder* I got that once on WoW. No lie. But really, running around Gilg for the time I was, I didn't see much trolling going on. Though, to be honest, I didn't see much RP either. People were too busy, from I could see, playing the game. X-D I saw some really funny (and really bad) names, though. The one that made me cringe most was Kael'thas Sunstrider. >_<
  14. Nnngh. I have a few things I could do. Finish Bioshock: Infinite... Keep playing The Last of Us... Skyrim... Keep working on making my RPGMaker game... But my obsessive tendencies will not allow this. I will likely sit here and obsess over this game until it's out while doing little else. *puts the Limsa Lominsa music on repeat and rocks back and forth* Though I will likely work on character profiles for Corelyn and few others I need to get working on. Hell, I think due to 3102 I wasn't even able to MAKE my other characters. D:
  15. Oh boy. Well... this is definitely gonna take some thought. The original Corelyn (from WoW) was, at the time I left, a Broken Bird Hikkikomori who had taken far too many hits from life to really have anything close to happiness outside of forcing herself to try. That said, yay getting back to basics and reinventing her, hopefully, a bit of a happier way (since good RP doesn't -always- go the way you want X-D). Badass Bookworm This is, quite simply, the basis of Corelyn's existence. Aside from her "darker" style of dress, she is relatively unimposing - short, mousey, and rather fragile - but her mind makes up for that and then some. Simply put, she's a "total screaming genius." (Points to whomever gets that reference.) Meganekko (Glasses Girl) It's rather uncertain whether or not she -needs- glasses, given she can function well without them, but Corelyn will tell you that she wears them to correct a small issue that irks her when reading. She just opts to wear them all the time. If I'm RPing Corelyn actively, no matter what level or gear I have... you can bet her head gear will be a pair of glasses. Measuring the Marigolds Corelyn tends to see more from her books and brain than from her eyes. Everything, at first glance, is reduced to numbers, figures, and equations. Everything must be explained. Beauty and the like are nice, so long as she knows the -reason- they are that way first, and often, she will see beauty in things no one else can from the complexity and impossibility involved in their being. Genius Cripple While not completely disabled in any major way, Corelyn is fragile at best, leading her gait to be very cautious and calculated. More often than not, she is liable to be wounded much worse than most. However, she makes up for this by (over-)compensating with her intellect. Ties in directly with... Glass Cannon / Squishy Wizard She can dish it out, but she certainly can't take it. A force to be reckoned with, whether it's in some accident in scribbling arcanima designs in her tomes or just taking a hit a bigger, tougher person could shrug off easily, a decent hit could grievously wound her. To this end, she's forced to compensate greatly - that is, when she's not diverting her full attention to something else. Squishy Wizard applies primarily to this Corelyn as most other versions are technology-reliant and are disabled in both physical and magical abilities (come on Magitek class! >_>). Magic is Mental This is kind of a universal thing. Smart = magic! Disabled Snarker Especially snarky if she's nursing some sort of wound or otherwise at a disadvantage due to her physical ineptness, Corelyn's prone to snark in the first place - but is especially prone to being Enraged by Idiocy. The Spock This is more a mistake that others make. While her cool head and tendency toward an apathy-like calm, people tend to see her as emotionless, cold and logical. However, she's... No So Stoic She bottles things up, be it positive or negative emotion, and eventually releases them in bursts, often to herself or at overwhelming moments. This is often fairly contained or limited to so much as a fit of laughter or a breakdown behind closed doors. There are also some things she doesn't bother holding back. However, when things get extreme enough and she has no outlet... Rant-Inducing Slight When she finally can't take anymore of the stupid, the ignorant, or just anything in general that is pissing her off, she will likely go off the deep end and start screaming at whomever happened to be the last straw. Though it will not always be at that person in particular. She may just fume until she sees that person next, then explode without warning into a "The Reason You Suck" Speech. She's a little too good at those. I Work Alone While not entirely averse to help, she will more often than not decline. This is mostly due to her confidence in her own ability to complete a task with the utmost efficiency, and that adding another party would complicate her calculations with too many variables or unknowns. She will, however, work with people she can predict. Socially Awkward Hero She has no fear of going into the wilds to test a new spell or pattern from her tomes, but when confronted with most sorts of social interaction... she'll procrastinate, often even blowing it off entirely. While she does possess some manner of social skill, she's still rather awkward due to her general disinclination to be in such situations. Too Clever by Half Be careful if Corelyn's writing in a one of her tomes or grimoires... while she's got a brilliant mind, she's far from perfect and is known to have some spectacular failures. More than once has she blown up a grimoire by accident, set her immediate surroundings ablaze, or even blown herself up. Familiar Somewhat obvious, given the Arcanist class and Carbuncle. Hers is named Xiin (ZEEN). The difference in the Emerald and Topaz are simply different forms of the same. There are probably a lot more, but... I'm gonna stop while I'm ahead. This is bad for my Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!
  16. I'm back in (well, I have been, but I've been busy playing, hehe)! Nice to see that they extended the beta to 11am (EST, anyway), but I've lost too much sleep this weekend, what with work and other general nastiness, so sadly I cannot take full advantage of this. Still. I got to do a bunch of things I wanted to do - and using a PS3 controller with my PC to play this was one. I am thoroughly impressed. Targeting can be a bit wonky, but all in all, it's CERTAINLY comparable to mouse/keyboard. Gotta give Squeenix credit - on multiple counts. They're doing some pretty awesome things here. <3
  17. Man, now I'm sad. 3102 I can get around with the JP servers. 2002 is now kicking me in the face. =-( Dammit. >_<
  18. Yeah, I gave up for the rest of my shift and am just playing with emotes on a JP server with my Miqo'te kitty!Dailen. lol Though I really need to figure out a good way to translate Dailen Darnarius to the proper Miqo'te naming convention. lol I don't like the current one I have.
  19. Poor Corelyn is standing in the middle of Western La Noscea, just milling about. ICly, she'd likely be chilling somewhere quiet with a nice view, scrawling in her grimoire... and likely causing a ruckus with the results of some of her less... successful designs. And all my other RP characters are floating around in limbo somewhere. =-( Poor things. They're just begging to be made, but 3102's all...
  20. I heard one theory for its cause. Apparently, some coffee boy at Square Enix decided to trip a wire that would reboot the servers for some reason or another, and everyone in a loading screen or a cutscene got locked in limbo. So, to the coffee boy who decided to go for a stroll on his own route in the offices, Ha! Yeah, I was DC'd right as I killed the Hooded Mage, went to a loading screen and boom, 3102.
  21. Well, crashes and bugs like this -are- to be expected. Beta is beta, after all. Though maybe it should start being more alpha and stand up to those nasty bugs. Dur hur hur.
  22. Very true. I just wanna get back to brandishing a book at people and things I don't like... and then sling death from the pages! First thing I wanna do, though, if I can get back in before it's over is get a few levels in Thaumaturge so I can sling those spells about from my book'o'doom as well. lol First thing I want to do.. *beat* WHIN AH GIT MAH HANDS ON YEH, FINAL FANTAHSEH, I'LL BE BEATIN' YEH WITH MEH FEESHIN' STICK O' DOOM. Now you sound like the entirety of Limsa. lol You know, in Phase 3, I spent my time learning pirate so I'd be ready when I became arcanist. Time well spent. I always just read it all aloud in an outrageous Scottish accent... and usually sound like Demoman. Well... they all DO have eyepatches...

  25. lol! Then, if you combine Marauder with Bard abilities... http://image.jeuxvideo.com/images/p3/b/r/brutal-legend-playstation-3-ps3-022.jpg[/img] That's just overkill. That serves only to justify my assertions! >=-3
