Based upon the naming conventions we have been told: that one could be bordering, but I would say it's a safer bet than something like Akara Asume. In the generator: Amari (sharp ending vowel) shows up as a last name and there are a few that follow the beginning name as well, however, the one you mentioned does come across very Japanese. This is most likely up to each person's preference on whether such a name would be considered an "issue". Though, as for stating it's a Miqo'te who took on a highlanders name, then technically you are correct : it does not follow the naming conventions for the highlanders. Nor does it follow midlander. But, as mentioned by Rock, there are a few wild cards out there. Some RPers will choose to follow the naming guides strictly; others will not. If the girl/guy wants to roleplay that is her name: I see no reason why she can't. To me, it's a personal choice as long as one is willing to bare the facts that ICly they might get a few strange looks for their name.

Many of the people who created characters a while back did not have access to naming conventions as SE had not released any info on it. Some changed their names, other made up reasons as to why their names do not follow the released information. (Such as a Miqo'te abandoning their true name or being raised by another race. A Roe taking on a Hyur sounding name since people couldn't say said Roe's name.) All the names that I have seen or read don't come close to representing Japanese styled names (FFXIV 1.0 NPC Names for Highlanders) However, some Miqo'te names can sound Japanese. Such as if you use the naming generator: Ichi comes up as a last name for a female keeper. Ichi would be 'one' in Japanese. Also there is the NPC: Una Tayuun. Which is less likely to be influenced by Japanese, but could be passable as either. However, the Miqo'te as a general do not follow Japanese sounding names as most of the names are sharp and short versus the Japanese 'flowy' sounds.

1st Astral Moon : Janurary 1st Umbral Moon : February 2nd Astral Moon : March 2nd Umbral Moon : April 3rd Astral Moon : May 3rd Umbral Moon : June 4th Astral Moon : July 4th Umbral Moon : August 5th Astral Moon : September 5th Umbral Moon : October 6th Astral Moon : November 6th Umbral Moon : December When you make a character, down toward the bottom it will give you a day as well such as I picked the 24th Sun of the 2nd Umbral Moon which translated to our kind would be The 24th Day in April. (Careful of typos though, there is one in April -- they have two dates listed as 4/7, unless they fixed this. Warning is for if you haven't created your character yet. For purely IC: Ignore this PSA) As for how you could do it: ♦ Sio has a great example with selecting a nameday revolving around your deity. ♦ Base it around what element (season-ish) you like. Right now, being fire, reminds me of summer and they are giving out swimsuits too, so I imagine it is warm in-game. Or SE is being sadistic - either or. ♦ Base it off your own birthday (what I did -- just cause) ♦ Base it off a significant date IRL ♦ Base it off an event/occurrence you want to happen to correspond with something in game. Example: Having it so the calamity occurred on your character's birthday and therefore now perhaps the character looks upon the day with disgust versus joy (character development potential)

This. Not everyone in the realm would be an adventurer or follow in the footsteps of combat. There have to be merchants, there have to be farmers, etc. Otherwise there is no balance in the world. If you don't want to play out your game-mechanic profession as IC then don't. All we see is you have a sword and shield. For all we know, you use that shield as a boat and the sword as a paddle when you go out for fishing or relaxing on the waters. No need to limit yourself to game-mechanics, do what fits your character best.

The Benifits of Sword vs. Spell, and Multiple Characters
Shae'ra replied to LilMomoshi's topic in RP Discussion
I personally love being a healer in game, however, not necessarily one ICly (though, I think I am going to be trying it - we shall see) I plan to run several... My list of to-do-(eventually) is as follows: White Mage Archer Bard Pugilist Scholar The scholar will most likely be more toward OOC. Archer was going to be my main for IC purposes (which is why I separated bard and archer cause they are different to me) Pugilist was the other for purely IC purposes. I'm not a big fan of melee in this game, but then again, I've been too busy being archer/conjurer that I never truly gave it a chance. On an IC level: Hand to Hand (Pugilist) is a typical thing to learn, Archery would have been learned for hunting purposes and then healing would be picked up for the purpose of self preservation. I don't plan to be everything IC or master of all or anything - merely what makes sense for my character to have grown up with. RP wise, I usually invest only into one main character and then will create supporting ones if need be. So here, I am glad I can be everything in one character. -
Hm, I came up with two quotes that usually fit for my character. There is the short "Nobody's Hero" which also is an anagram for "Honor by Dose" meaning you earn your honor a step at a time. The full of the first is "I'm not the bad guy, but I'm nobody's hero." Then to explain some morals for a past character was: "If I can justify it to myself, I can do anything."

Most times, if I move clear away from it, I can manage to miss it. I have learned moving just barely out of range usually ends up with me taking the hit anyway. However, one I have never been able to dodge is the sneeze... as silly as it sounds, it's a frontal aoe however, even if I run through the monster and am behind him -- I still get hit.

Character creation now open on Balmung and Gilgamesh!
Shae'ra replied to The_Wanderer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Back two days after early access, when characters were locked on Balmung as well, my friend was able to get into making a character on that server around 4-5am EST time. Not sure if it would help at all but might as well mention it as trying anything is sometimes better than nothing. -
However I'm not sure if it shows up when you 'examine' someone. I have tried it with a friend, if they have filled out their info and you examine them: then look for a small icon that is the same as if you look at someone's comment who is on your friend's list (I think it's a speech bubble? If not it's a paper/list. Toward upper left I think..) and if you click it you can read what they have typed up there. So, it doesn't show up immediately, but it is accessible through examining.

This is a very good question. I haven't quite run across anyone who is sick yet (that I paid attention to) so I would have to do a bit of research. Since there is Espuna to cure poisons - there does seem the ability to have weakness of types that play a toll against the body/health of a person. As it was mentioned above there was a disease in Gridania - so I will try to look more up of that and see what I can dig up on it. My first thought upon your first paragraph was a disease or virus in which caused aether to replicate within the body, thus creating an excess - however, I do not believe that would be quite possible since it is stated along the story line that all aether borrowed must be returned (cannot create or destroy essentially, merely borrow). Since it is nearly 5:30am where I live, I will have to look into this more tomorrow and along the way and also search around weaknesses and diseases in FF. Thanks for bringing up this question, sadly is something I will have to look into before I can give a better answer. That could be quite interesting, having someone who is trying to help and fix things actually be the one spreading it by accident.

This is up to you. There are generally two types of writers: The Architect and the Gardener. I am a Gardener myself. I will never know all of my backstory until I develop it a I roleplay (which has lead to amazing plots, or so I am told) an example of this is I RPd the other day in FF and someone mentioned why my character was wearing a Maelstorm jacket - well, let's just say that my Miqo'te ended up being a twin suddenly rather than all his brothers just being older than him. As for your story: It is yours. I see no reason you couldn't go with the backstory and it is good that your character's personality and drive comes from something in his past (stronger character foundation). Only thing I am not sure of is if you mean literally into the realm like he is from out of it or not, if you just mean to call it a realm then nevermind me it's 4am. This is completely up to you. I personally am trying to get to end-game before I do most RP -- but this is because I am picky on my outfits. It is completely up to you what you want to do and when you feel comfortable roleplaying. One thing to note: The use of double brackets ((this)) is to indicate OOC chatter. So you would most likely confuse the seven hells out of people, could be amusing though! The way you roleplay is up to you. Though, I do not recommend relying on the game emotes like /dance /wave /salute I will use game emotes every now and then to accompany what my character does and this is my personal way of roleplaying: Nahv'ir took a seat upon the wooden chair, pressing his back against it and leaning his head back with a small sigh escaping past his pale lips. It took the Miqo'te a few moments within his own thoughts before he jolted his body forward, elbows crashing hard down upon the wooden surface of the counter with his hands balled into fists, "How long does it take someone to get a drink around here?" Nahv'ir /sit Miah jolted upon the sudden movements of the Miqo'te, her own ears perking up as her tail straightened in mild fear before settling back down,"I'm Miah" the female Seeker dipped her body into a small bow before lookign back up to him, "what do you want to drink?" She canted her head to the side, wide eyes set upon the other's face as she awaited his answer. Miah /bow (not all typed emotes have to be followed by or used with a game emote either!) There are people who do faster style for taverns which is the Nahv'ir: How long does it take to get a drink around here Miah: Well, what do you want to drink? However, that is not my personal style as I prefer detailed posts. Refer to the above ~ I rarely use in-game emotes outside of /sit /kneel /pray (if I have a character that would do that) /bow /salute If someone /waves at me -- I usually take it as OOC unless I see them emote something else along with it. Ex: Miah /wave Miah flails her arms over her head with a broad grin on her face, "Nahvy!" That is one way to do things, another is to wait and watch what kind of roleplay is going on in a location and then to approach them ICly. Most times people just approach ICly if it doesnt seem like a private roleplay and all is well. Do note though, if someone decides to leave then or they want to roleplay just themselves - Don't feel bad or anything -- 99% of the time it is just the fact that the two people were trying to get somewhere with their roleplay and couldn't include another, not specifically you. No worries on questions -- it is better to ask and to be willing to learn than it is to not ask and then not want to take any advice from anyone..and that applies to both new and old roleplayers.

I definitely agree that in order to do this it would be required to be very organized and have details laid out so that there is no confusion. I know the one on GW2 that went around went fairly well due to the fact that it was very laid out and all the information was available: how it is contracted as well as the stages, etc. If nobody understands what is going on..well..I would expect it to fail. I thank you all for the input, so far very encouraging, while I will wait for things to get much more settled before attempting such a thing: I am glad to hear people are interested and I would love to keep building upon the idea and developing it along the way until it is ready to be put into place.

When I do role-play fights, level never comes into play. I rather despise when people use game mechanics to determine a fight scenario. If someone is level 5 but is playing a person in full armour who is in his prime years, trained all his life vs someone who is level 50 and has never held a weapon before or never had a fight...you can't tell me that the 50 should auto win because s/he is 50. Gear however, will come into play. Being kicked with plate armour is much different than being kicked with no shoes or with padded leather boots on. Also, shoving a dagger through heavy armour is much more difficult than it is through a thin cotton shirt. Class will come into play based off of what you do: Puglists have a shorter range than a lancer..however, once you get up on a lancer - the puglists has the advantage. Though, most of the fights I am a part of : every class has advantages and disadvantages and I do not use game mechanics to guide what I do, I use the weapon that is being wielded. (Brass Knuckles are much different to fight against than a staff or polearm/lance) If you are not comfortable with the way someone is handling a RP fight: step out. Nobody is forcing you to RP fight in a situation. Typically, when I fight I am very fair and I look for people who are going to be fair to me as well (no godmodding mostly) I have only once had to walk out on an RP fight but that was due to godmodding. Most the time, people are decent and nobody can kill your character or maim them without permission. You are also in control of how wounded your character gets. While people wont like it if you dodge everything, as that comes out boring for both parties I'm sure as well as will boardline the godmodding spectrum. You can half-dodge. An example of that is a friend once threw 4 daggers in throw at my character who was merely feet away: well, he wouldn't have been able to dodge at all but already had his hands partly raised. I had him pull his arms up defensively instantly upon seeing the woman flicking her wrist with the daggers so that they bore into the flesh of his forearms, one missing to the rock beside him, and the other grazing through his leather and lightly through his skin above his hip. To me, it was a fair compromise (also, said person was a friend of my character so he knew she'd not fight him farther, note: this is also not FF -- my guy is not in that kind of situation so soon!) Healing: I do not use this in a fight, if someone heals themself in a fight as well - I am going to excuse my character and drop the fight. My character wouldn't fight against someone who is using heals in the way a game mechanic form works. If everyone used healing during a fight - the fight would never end. Healing afterward is a whole other thing. While not in this game, I have been a part of training exercises in past games that were purely RP fights. Even if there is not a FC that is based upon fighting - I am sure there are a few people in every FC that are more than willing to train with your character. I am not a pro in any sort of fashion, I have never really done technical fighting in real life (10+ years ago I did karate but that does not count at all as I don't remember it...) but I can attempt to help and share my experiences and my style of fighting through roleplay if you are interested at some point. I attempt to be as realistic as possible while also taking into consideration the world in which the characters are in and what can be/is possible through it. Though, I am on Balmung server wise.

No worries, I am still new to some of the lore as well, learning along the way both through research and through the stories in ARR. Perhaps the two links will be of a bit more assistance. Aether and Atheryte as to explain the whole of what it is. Though, those pages in themselves are not fully able to explain the answers. Aether is an energy but it holds a physical form: mist or solid. The goggles that the Scions have are able to see the aetheric flow/stream/mist whereas we cannot see the mist form naturally (from what I gather) All the wiki states is that it is the aether that constructs beings resonates, not the soul, however, it doesn't state really why only sentient beings can resonate. It could have to do with a conscious decision (when you attune in game, you hold your hand up to/out to the shard) to desire to resonate/attune.

Eorzean Epidemic The topic of being sick or having an epidemic break was brought up in the "How do you RP crafting" thread so I figured, out of curiosity, I would drag it here. Haha, this is a little off-topic, but I helped run a server event in TERA recently that revolved around a disease outbreak. One of my own characters got sick and very nearly died (only a single dice roll saved her ). That said, it was horrifically difficult to find people who were willing to RP as infected. I don't understand why, though. This was an amazingly life-changing experience for my own character! I'm a bit surprised people would not take up that, in GW2 there was the Blacklung Plague run by a player as an epidemic that went world wide, bombings of the disease in different places. There were four levels of it ranging from minor symptoms to laying on your death bed and many among the community were roleplaying being infected/sick from it and spreading the disease accidentally to friends or family. Eventually, a cure was released. I am curious to ask, as apparently there are mixed results of caring for such a thing, what the roleplayers here are in favor of. If there were an epidemic break out (not now, let the realm of hardcore leveling and getting used to settle in, but later down the road) would people be interested in such a thing or would you personally not like/want it? This is meant as an honest question: it wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings to say that someone would be uninterested in seeing this so I welcome any constructive input and thoughts. If you do like the idea: ♦ If you have any suggestions on how to make it more enjoyable, please share or just any constructive comments at all. If you don't like the idea: ♦ What about it is undesirable? Any constructive comments are welcomed.

Hm, I was pretty sure that in the story line it mentioned that all things were of aether. I would jump in game and look again, but...maintenance. I would imagine in order to travel the aether stream, you would need to be comprised of entirely aether, other than the soul. When you die, your soul is not reunited (obviously) therefore that is where the revive ability is where I am unsure if it would be able to return the soul to the physical form of the body if you were able to do it right away. (There is a part in your story line that mentions someone dying and everyone was rather upset. I don't know if they were unable to revive him for one reason or another or didn't try or if once you are gone it is 'dead is dead'. However, they also included talking about reviving someone in the personal story line as well -- so it must be possible to do on a lore level, not just a game mechanic.)Though, for the purposes of healing alone: I would imagine reconstruction of the body would be possible via aether binding. But it is also important to note: With that, I would imagine having new aether fused to your body to reconstruct/heal would also require resting time specially because it is not your 'normal' or 'typical' aether you are used to having as a part of your body.

This is the way, with the knowledge I have come across through the Conj quests I was going to go about it:
-
I hope they might change it to where you are able to dye anything in the future, but for now: taking what I get. I always keep clothes with me that I like, even if they are outdated due to stats, most roleplay I have been a part of isn't a "run and kill things" type so I am not worried as to if it will protect me or not if it is my roleplay set of armour. Once you get to picking up a second profession on a character, you can unlock the gear set list where you can save things. I still have my original clothes and many along the leveling-way. I have certain gear sets labeled specifically for fighting and others purely for RP purposes. I recommend keeping a hold of anything that you remotely like and saving it on your person or with a retainer (unlocked at 18-20 roughly via through main story) cause you might be able to mix and match later on.
-
One thing you can always do if there comes a time when you really need information about something: play windowed and pull up a how-to guide/wiki. I play a character who does fishing, and while I have fished in real life, I have never cleaned one. (Only seen it on TV, thanks Chopped) So if there comes a time when I am asked to clean a fish or feel the need to roleplay doing so: I will pull up a wiki on how to and then follow it generally from there. I might not describe it perfectly or in detail (I'm pretty sure most people don't want this in full detail anyway...), but people will get the idea.

Glad I could be the one to drag you along in my wake, awoken to a new realm of possibilities and devious fun to follow in the endeavors to come. Though it was last moment, this spontaneous decision has so been prosperous. Also:

How 1017 and Maintenance is starting to feel SS I found in game, the 1017 Troll from Nimarhie. Can't wait for the fix this week, I hope it truly does fix the situation so we can put the 1017 nemesis behind us all.

Intermission 2 has been filled as of today and Xenedra Ambreaus has created Intermission 3. For those who wish to join Intermission 3, Please read: When you are able to get in game, contact one of the following people for an invite: Xenedra Ambreaus Kyma Thauvma Darien Cadell Nahv'ir Raih Do note: you will need to send us a /tell in game rather than asking for an invite here. It is much easier for each member to try to contact one of us than it is to have a list of people for us to try to randomly send a tell to until we can invite. We are unable to send invites to offline people as we must add you to our friendslist to send you a pearl. (Pearl allows use of Linkshell)

Aye, many of us are having the same issue. It's been talked about over on the Maintenance Rage thread. Sadly, we just get to wait it out and hope that our list will return to us soon.

Agreed, specially when you get a generic copy-paste message from the GM or Support team.
