That assumes that the least populated server is, by association of it being least popular with us, is also least popular with the rest of the FFXIV community. A does not always mean B, basically. Wutai has a low tally, for example, but I am sure many people also presume that the community at large -- I'm not saying pre-existing guilds/linkshells/forums, but FF fans in general -- will make that a mid/high-populace server due to its FFVII affiliation.

And that is all that matters. I got to confess, I sort of get this "Oh god it's doomsday!" vibe at the moment from some people. The server vanishes for, what ... a half hour? Maybe a little more? And suddenly it's the end of days, Democracy is bad, and so on and so forth. Chillax, folks. I apologize if I am overstepping any sort of rank boundaries since I'm just a lowly voter and not a member of the council, or someone who has 100+ posts, but put things in perspective. We're 20 days out from actual release still. Give things at least a couple of days to see how things go, if servers are actually "full" for more than an hour, and let cooler heads prevail.

Someone really needs to give Kashuan or Gysahl a pity vote. Probably Gysahl. Think of the chocobos, you know? :chocobo:

Just a little bit of news from the back alley of the Interbutts. /v/ -- you know, that /v/? -- will be going to Lindblum. At least for Open Beta.

For what it is worth, I'm not too concerned about "elitists" on certain servers. In the end, every server is going to end up with at least a couple of linkshells, guilds, or whatever you want to call them, that will rub the community the wrong way. I am sure all of you who played FFXI can think back on at least one on your own servers you hailed from. Some just happen to have a bit more PR around the 'net, and their exploits take on a life of their own. Besides, this being FFXIV, there is not going to be any sort of all-purpose or general "chat room" in the zones or areas, like the case of WoW, or Aion, or other games. This actually is a pretty big thing (a positive, if you will), since oftentimes the haterade that RPers get comes from those server-wide or region-wide channels, which ultimately degenerate in to bickering, trolling, and the like (and RP becomes a flash point all too often). Anyway. Just rambling. In the end, I tend to take big, bad, elitist groups in stride. I did when on Gilgamesh in XI, and don't see any reason not to now.

Don't forget it's run by an Oglop. And who doesn't love an Oglop?

Couple thoughts: -Looks like Wildwood Elezen are more in line with your average, traditional elves instead of FFXI Elvaan, based off the 'eh' Strength/Vitality but above average Dexterity and Intelligence. -Is it just me, or does it seem odd that Roegadyn that have spent their lives as pirates and on the sea have a higher Strength stat than Roegadyn that come from the firey depths of mountains?

I can just feel the love for Final Fantasy IX. :moogle: And I love it.

Expect the Unexpected (Unknown Musical Tastes)
Satisiun replied to Trizzip's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Well, considering know one really knows me or anything since I'm still a less-than-100-posts newb ("You don't know me! You don't know me! You don't know nothin'!"), I doubt the community will be either surprised or unsurprised with whatever I put up. Nevertheless, I may as well pick the music I listen to that most people who do know me double-take at when they hear I listen to it. In particular? Despite being about as ghostly as Casper in the skintone department and also fitting the WASP stereotype to a T (minus the Protestant part), my playlists are filled to the brim with old school hip-hop (or modern tracks inspired by it), jazz music (both nu and classic), and J-Hip-Hop (think Samurai Champloo; Rest in Peace, Nujabes). There's a few "mainstream" items, however. (I don't use LastFM, sadly, so I'm basically winging this list. Sample song for each artist/group, too.) 1) Nujabes - 2) Giant Panda - Strings 3) Sound Providers - 4) People Under the Stairs - The Breakdown 5) The Hours - [/b] 6) Carl Sagan ft. Stephen Hawkings (you heard me) - [/b] 7) Dj Krush - [/b] 8) Blue Scholars - [/b] 9) Anamanaguchi - [/b] 10) m-flo - [/b] 11) City and Colour - [/b] 12) Frou Frou - 13) Miles Davis - 'Round Midnight 14) Dave Matthew's Band - 15) Amy Winehouse - It doesn't help that most (see: all) of my friends are exclusively in to metal, or hard rock, no exceptions. I don't exactly have many/any friends who have such an eclectic music variety. -
Oh, cool, Necro-Boxxy image.

Because Satisiun was an Elvaan in XI. ... what? Were you expecting some deep, thought out answer on the positives of the Elezen race, and why it is superior to all the others? No, no. Not happening. Satisiun is an Elezen purely because of strict, sentimental attachment. He was an Elvaan in XI. He was an Elvaan-looking Daeva in Aion. I've had him, both as just a character played in a game, and an RP/writing character since 2003, and I'm simply too attached to either make something new in the appearance department, or change him to some other race. (Although I've dabbled making a Snidely Whiplash-type evil twin with an anagram version of his name, but ... still Elezen.) While on the subject of race voices, since that seems to be what some people are focusing on the last few posts ... to all the beta testers, who else nearly did a spittake when they were browsing voices for Lalafel males, and after going from whiny doughboy, to mirthful child, you suddenly got this deep, smooth baritone voice reserved for Elezen and Roegadyn? I know I did. Spent the next 30 seconds just laughing. (And for those non-beta folk curious about what I am babbling about ... Click. Specifically about the 2:50 mark.)

The still-existing lack of /emote: concerned?
Satisiun replied to Satisiun's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Hah. Thanks for clearing that up for me, Tadir. I keep seeming to whiff in the explanation department in this thread. But, yeah. "/poke motion", "/laugh motion", "/think motion", things like that, all remove the text that goes along with the motions the character makes. It's very convenient so you don't end up, say, writing how your character is waving in welcome, but then your used emote (/wave) has an automatic text that assumes all waving is good-bye. -
The still-existing lack of /emote: concerned?
Satisiun replied to Satisiun's topic in FFXIV Discussion
There is just one thing I am still curious about, though, now that I think about it. Whether or not "motion" will be in FFXIV. I didn't see anything in the updated player manual that would lead me to believe it is. It's not a big deal in the end. But being able to laugh, cry, poke, cheer, or do other things without the text window saying it is still nice, especially if you don't want emote text stepping on what you wrote in your ongoing RP activity, y'know? -
The still-existing lack of /emote: concerned?
Satisiun replied to Satisiun's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Well, new information has been released over at the beta forums in preparation for Open Beta. I figure everyone should get a peek at this, because I got to admit, I am pleasantly surprised. So first, the big question: Was text commands for emotes implemended? See for yourself. Now here's the pleasant surprise. Remember the reference to custom emotes? Ones created by yourself by placing "/em" or "/emote" before whatever you want to type? Well ... That's right. They've made a comeback. In other words, if you are so inclined or ambitious enough, you can now hypothetically divide your actions from your speech in character. :cheer: And lastly, since sitting didn't exist in the beta, will it exist in XIV? Why, not only will it exist, it will also allow your character to sit in an actual chair or seat if you are near something defined as being able to be sat in! Good times, good times. -
... Hell, why not. Satisiun Desain 1. Knight in Sour Armor: Satisiun's really been beaten up over the years, and not just in the physical department. He isn't the type to be an outwardly smarmy jackass, but he definitely has become very bitter. Still, being a good person is still second nature to him, to the point of acting on instinct. 2. Humble Hero: Satisiun has never been the proud type, and it really shows. He doesn't like bringing attention to himself, no matter what he does. This goes hand in hand with #1, teetering almost on the self-deprecating hero over time. 3. It's All My Fault: Connected to both previous tropes, too. Sati's got a lot of weight to carry, and regardless of how little responsibility he may have for whatever happened to him, he takes way too much blame. 4. Obfuscating Stupidity: Prior to #1 becoming a focal point to Sati's personality, he actually better fit the archetype Good Is Not Dumb. The difference now is that while he still acts the same way on the outside, he is definitely more cynical on the inside. 5. Blade On A Stick: Because Satisiun is going to be majoring with a bachelor's degree in Polearm Engineering (Lancer). 6. Freud Was Right: This isn't something that will become obvious or is even heavily implied when playing, but under the nice guy demeanor he does sometimes find himself having thoughts related to a comment or something he sees that may not exactly be PG. But that isn't to say he is a hornball; Sati just has heard one too many dirty jokes and now sees many a thing when in light company as amusing in the same way. 7. Minored In Asskicking: Satisiun isn't some super-powered Elezen who is "hiding his power level", but he nevertheless likes to show restraint in a lot of situations unless he has to do something. When he does finally decide to do so, however ... 8. Rule Of Funny: Not really sure how to explain this one, since even the trope defines it as a character stepping out of their norm to bring a laugh. Basically just think of this being here since I tend to be a rather horrid person when it comes to the puns, so expect them occasionally from Satisiun, too. ... and I am so not doing anymore. Finding 8 took long enough.

"H-hey ... WALL-E ..." Otacon nervously said as he turned towards his treaded, robotic companion. "Wuuh?" WALL-E replied in response, his eye flaps lifting with piqued curiosity, wondering what the Metal Gear engineer was going to say as they slowly made their way away from the building where Metal Gear REX now lay as a smoldering wreck. "D-do you ... think ... uh ..." Otacon was stammering as he wringed his hands about in his lab jacket's pockets, still wearing the same thing since their escape from the facility. He took a deep breath, and finally turned towards WALL-E, kneeling down to meet him, eyes to oculars, his hands resting on the robot's shoulders. "Do you think ... love can bloom on the battlefield ... WALL-E?" WALL-E started shaking within moments, murmuring intelligable robotic sounds and shudders as Otacon's left hand began to deftly slide towards ... ========== ... ... SHAHDJKAHSDGAFSYQ@F OKAY I CAN'T DO IT ANYMORE! I'm done until I write one of the two I got! And because it's both MGS and WALL-E-related ...

Mon reaction: Mon reaction: I swear, I've gotten so many awfully awful ones that I literally can't stop laughing for three minutes to decide which one I should torment myself (or readers) with! But the tops so far? "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining WALL-E and Rocky Horror Picture Show. The story should use losing one's virginity as a plot device!" ... and ... "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy 8. The story should use competing in a Rock Band tournament as a plot device!" So, so leaning towards the second one.

Step 1) http://kaction.com/badfanfiction Step 2) Find one that you feel is either hilariously bad, badly hilarious, or just plain bad. Step 3) Amuse yourself and your forum-mates, and post the results if you do write up something. Step 4) At least 3-5 paragraphs! Think of this as a little pre-game release boot camp. The best writers sometimes have to suffer through writing some pretty awful stuff, after all. And to show that I am not above degrading myself or making a fool of myself, I'll even do one first. (Hopefully this is an acceptable thread ... haha ...) ============================== "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Parappa the Rapper and Doom. The story should use martial arts as a plot device!" One by one did the zombies approach. Zombies of Sunny Funny, of Lammy and Rammy, of PJ Bear. Everyone that Parappa knew, or had loved, had been turned in to these mindless, shambling creatures that seemed not to care that they were about to rip their poor, rapping canine friend in to pieces. "I ... I-I gotta ... I gotta b ... b ..." Parappa meagerly managed to whimper out. From across the ruined road, standing in the burnt out shambles of the Pasta Palace, a grotesque-looking demon of both hellish and mechanical appearance simply let out a horrid laugh, watching as the only known survivor met his doom. But before victory could be attained, a sudden fury of green, and an aromatic onion stench wafted over Parappa's nose. "Hyaaaa-cha-cha-cha-cha! CHAAAAA!" From almost out of nowhere, Chop Chop Master Onion, Parappa's martial arts sensei, slammed his strong, sandal-clad foot right to Sunny Funny's head, sending the zombified girlfriend of Parappa careening across the road and towards the feet of the Cyberdemon, who simply scowled. "Come, Parappa!" Chop Chop said, as he reached for and helped the rapper up to his feet. "You must remember! These are your friends no longer. Now, you must fight them, so that you can free them from this Hell!" Parappa came to his senses as his sensi spoke with those firm convictions, and getting back to his feet, took on that same fighting stance his dojo master had taught him so many times. "You're right, sensei! If we're going to get out of here alive ..." He clenched his fists even harder, a grin appearing on his face. "... then I gotta believe!"

The still-existing lack of /emote: concerned?
Satisiun replied to Satisiun's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Just to sort of backpedal a little on my original post (I was meaning to respond to a couple responses yesterday, but suffice it to say, Autumn cleaning of the home took precedence), I'm not particularly worried or relaxed one way or the other on whether SE will or will not get around to flipping the proverbial switch and turning on typing in emotes in the chat window with commands. I just figured with the public release of the game a month away, it was definitely a topic worth throwing out there, just to see how people would take to having to resort to using the current UI to sort of clunk through the menu and pick the emote you want to use. Additionally, apologies for not being a bit more clear on the focus of the topic. Or the primary focus, at least, since some people understandably thought I was more zoned in on custom emotes, or that it was just as much something I was harping about. I sometimes forget that not everyone coming to FFXIV is also coming from FFXI, and so some terms and lingo might be different depending on origins. ^^;
