  1. Use less pronouns? :joker: ... but, no. Sadly, at the moment, there is neither a workaround, nor any comment from SE about potentially expanding the character limit, to my knowledge. It definitely was never this limited in FFXI, and that is even factoring in the addition of surnames in XIV. Honestly, it's so bad I almost wonder if some ambitious tech. person (like the fine folks who made FFXI Windower) will try and come up with an external plug-in/box where you can type whatever you want, and it does the job of properly cutting it up in to bite-sized, half-Twitter pieces to send.
  2. I think what makes telling people not to join more than one linkshell even more hilarious is that with the implementation of Companies, you're basically telling people they can only have one social circle. Back in XI, it was a little more understandable. High-end, end-game LSes would compete with one another for HNM monsters, for example, and so competition was high. But with linkshells now all but totally relegated to a social role based off the belief that Companies will take on a more guild-like mantle in the game, it just makes no real sense.
  3. Turn back or you'll regret it! That boat is the boringest of boring boats that ever did boringer ... and stuff! (I kid. Well, with the turning back part. Limsa's great to visit. But that boat. Man. Nothing but a top desk, a steering NPC, and empty, empty sea until the last 2 minutes. Make sure you have a fishing rod!)
  4. And yet it is enough of an occurrence and happening that it is worth mentioning. You forget that many people turn to roleplay as a means of escape, and doubly so when it comes to MMORPGs. It's true, there are many other ways to escape one's life; alcohol, drugs, things like that. But MMOs are a different thing altogether, especially when you throw in the fact that it is a social environment through and through, coupled with the fact you can escape reality without the hassle of dressing up, going out, and whatnot. Can gyms, bowling clubs, or even work be an escape? Sure, they can be. But I don't see those being the same sorts of escapes that an MMO allows you to have, and I hope you can agree with me in that regard. There is also a lot more at stake. Euphina's post really lays that out, and what can happen. I once knew a girl who threw everything away to go and live with a guy she met in-game just once, and after perhaps a year or so of smooth sailings, and that whole honeymoon effect was over, began talking about how she in some ways regretted her decision, because she couldn't go home at that point, and had no real place to go. But I'm with Broken, and to tell the truth, it is why -- and yes, I know this is tinkering too much with my character from a personal, attached standpoint -- I personally am very gun shy towards roleplaying relationships. I also have my own story to share, much like his, and believe me it's a doozy of a story. But out of respect for "the past is the past", I'll abstain from sharing. That, and I'm a paranoid sunuvabitch nowadays.
  5. Oh, and here's a nice one. Whilst I was fishing. The funny thing is, I actually asked a friend of mine from Japan to translate. She told me it said something about a full inventory. ... except the even funnier part was that it wasn't supposed to say that. It should have warned of equipment durability. :? Which makes sense, when one asks themselves why would an inventory warning have a sword and shield icon?
  6. Given, I'm not sure how fast this thread will move, since for some people glitches are few and far in between, but nevertheless, I figured with enough folks here now in the Open Beta, why not give them an excuse to tell us or show us their stories of when something in the programming goes awry. Whether it's Engrish, or an untranslated bit of Japanese, or your character falling off the world, to the acclaimed "Oh god why can't I attack this thing oh god it's killing me oh god oh god oh god!" debacles with some monsters. Or, you know, this one I got just now. It definitely puts a new spin on "falling on your own sword". Have at it!
  7. No, you're pretty much a noob. I mean, congratulations, you can speak Moogle Speak if you start in Gridania. FFXI was the same with new adventurers. Frankly, it's a common theme from both games. This isn't supposed to be like Aion where you're secretly some savior of the Elyos or Asmodian race who has a nasty case of amnesia all revealed before you even make it to Sanctum or Pandemonium. Obviously I'm using the most extreme opposite side as an example, but nevertheless, you are a wet-behind-the-ears, newcomer of an adventurer, and considering the world of Eorzea is teeming with them (some of the tavern NPCs that greet you even say as such!), why wouldn't the NPCs be wary of yet another new one? And before the riposte is made ... yes, I know, the horned kid says people who talk Moogle Speak are rare. Yes, tens of thousands of PCs can suddenly speak it. That is still nothing compared to the pomp and importance given to your character in some other MMOs, like the aforementioned. I'm curious. How far along are you in the story, anyway? Level 10? Level 20? I ask because as it stands, there is a whole world of more story to be seen, so for all any of us know, things could change by the point you're mid-way to the level cap, or even earlier. By the time you were only even halfway to cap in XI, or just a bit over, they were asking you to take on the Shadow Lord. Things can change very quickly.
  8. I normally don't tend to play the apologist, so just consider this devil's advocacy instead, since I tend to chafe at long "Negative Nancy" lists, even if I agree with some of the points. Define "meaningful". There is actually a configuration setting where you can change the key definitions of things. In fairness, the arrow keys seem to be entirely off-limits when defining keys. Sounds more like an issue with one's computer. At worst I trudge down to about 20 fps on a nVidia GTS 250, even in busy areas. But again, to strike a fair balance, the speed at which NPCs and PCs appear can sometimes be annoying. Yes. 100% yes. They've mentioned in interviews that they recognize the complaints about a lack of a hardware mouse, and are looking in to it. Take that for what it's worth, since "looking in to it" varies greatly. Isn't this more a matter of opinion issue? I could easily say something like ... -I enjoy the combat system, and with the exception of the still-an-issue lag, I think it works quite well. -Shockingly, I find the crafting system to be interesting, and fishing is enjoyable once you learn how it works. -Guildeves are pretty fun, and I like being rewarded with actual equipment every so often, not to mention add supplemental XP atop the grind. At least it's better than fetch quests from random NPCs. ... but you could fire back with "That's just your opinion", right? Your mileage may vary, since having been someone who played FFXI from start to until just a few months ago, to me they did fix issues. But you'd have to specify which ones your sister is upset about.
  9. I refuse to share my serious attempts, considering all the much more superior attempts posted up. Still, just out of boredom and a desire for lulz, I tried going to "Old Man Crackpot" route, a la Classic Western. Given, since I'm as Northeast American as they come, it falls flat at points as I try to keep the theme going. http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/12/19 ... keLulz.mp3
  10. I'm thinking she is referring to these Slayers. Though I could be wrong.
  11. Same. Something I am a little concerned about, and I hope it's just a beta thing, is the lack of quests. Not the guildeve quests, but the quest quests. The ones you got from NPCs you spoke to around town, and as a result of doing them, got rewarded with coin, or an item, or something. (Separate from the storyline quest string/missions, that is. Just to be clear.) It isn't even so much the reward, either. Back in FFXI, those sorts of quests really expanded the world, as well as the lore, because many of them helped you to get to know NPCs better, not to mention learn little things -- some small, some big -- about the world as a whole, or at least the city you got the quest in. So. Yeah. Know it's still beta, but having not seen hide nor hair of these, I'm left hoping and waiting.
  12. Actually, I have an Asus gaming laptop. I can upgrade anything in it.... It even has room fro two more HDs... Yep. Seconding the positive vibes towards Asus. My own laptop has served me quite well, and although I've yet to upgrade it (I haven't had to since I got it for Christmas in 2008), I know I can when the time arises.
  13. In my case, that is exactly why I don't prefer Ul'dah. I grew up next to/inside of New York City, and now live in the capital of Ohio. If I need grit, I can just drive about 10 minutes downtown. Gridania speaks to my more relaxed, peaceful side. Something I don't get too often nowadays, not to mention I've always enjoyed nature, even if I don't get to partake in it as much as I used to. Plus for all the ragging the two NPCs for Gridania get, I'm endeared to them. But on the other hand I like my slapstick characters more than my comedically suave characters, which Ul'dah seems to favor more.
  14. If that really is the case, then the irony over this vote and why one server bombed over the other is thick enough to cut with a bloody chainsaw. But truth is it may just be a temporary thing. As many servers have seen cases of appearing, disappearing, going up, then back down, without much explanation from Square. Still, sorry to hear about your plight. Best thing to do for the moment is to just sit tight and see what happens between now and the official release.
  15. I'm no Michael Winslow, so the ship sounds and water might be a little difficult. I kid, I kid. And kudos if you get the joke, too. Anyway, I'll go ahead and give it a few tries on Audacity, and hopefully have a sample or two by tonight I can send via the PM system here.
  16. Narration? Really? You know, I've always had an interest in that. Listening to too many audiobooks when driving can do that to a guy. Mind if I throw my name in as someone who would like a chance at it?
  17. Ah, here we go. http://players.finalfantasyxiv.com You're in the beta, right? Then you can log on. I actually tried just a moment ago and it appears it's up and running for open beta, too.
  18. Well, before you go and do that, keep in mind that the Player Site for FFXIV is actually going to allow for things such as journal entries, archives of entries, as well as uploading of images and pictures of your exploits. I can't necessarily assure you that it'll look like a ye olde book, but from what I remember when dabbling with it in Closed Beta, it did look like pages in a book. I don't recall font being changeable, however. Or other sections. It did allow for tags, so one way around a lack of sections is to just be on the ball with tags, i.e. tags for OOC entries, IC entries, crafting information you want to share or write for your own sake, and the like. Also, you were able to see other people's updates to their journals, as everyone had a feed widget which let you track certain people, or see the newest entries from the entire community. Just throwing that out there. It might not have the customizations you want, but I liked it when I had it, and it got the job done.
  19. I think one reason that it feels as if there's an extra grind, at least to me, is because of the way the storyline has worked so far. Now keep in mind I've not gotten to Open Beta yet, but I was in Closed Beta, and so I am going off of that. And what occurred in Closed was that the storyline missions would only unlock further and further with every increment of 10 levels. In the case of FFXI, the progression of the storyline was not dependent on your highest job level, but simply by your nation standing (basically something built up either through trading crystals to guards, or repeating a repeatable nation mission). While yes, you still have to grind and level to actually be at a level to complete missions, you didn't feel like you had to grind to even begin a mission. It's subtle, almost a technical difference, but it makes a world of difference. In XI's case, you wanted to grind to see what happened next, because you'd be on a cliffhanger until you were ready. In XIV, once you hit 10, 20, 30, whatever, you can do the entirety of that mission's string, it seems. Could be I am talking out of my butt, but that's just me.
  20. Ehn. I won't butter up my opinion and say "good game" when I don't mean it, because there's something just off about what happened with this vote, to me. Yes, some will say that conflict and a combative mood is to be expected in situations like this, but I ultimately believe that in the end, a whole lot of fear-mongering in some cases (Oh god, /v/! Oh god, Blue Gartr! Oh god, [insert group here]! We're doomed to mockery and not enough privacy for our exclusive RP activities!), and assumptions in other cases (Lindblum is crashing because it obviously is overfilled. What? Proof? Pfft. Who needs proof? You can just tell! No, I don't care it's only been a day, or other servers also are!), brought about what was ultimately a real about-face in the results, when it probably shouldn't have. Yeah, all of you are right that in the end, a server is a server. And yes, being together as a group is the most important thing to consider over who likes what server name the most. But that doesn't change that this whole situation just feels off, between allowing vote changes to what seemed like a bully browbeating from some people who were just that insistent on Besaid for whatever reason (some person going as far as to guffaw at people who didn't change their vote if it wasn't for either Lindblum or Besaid). Anyway. That's the last I'll say on this whole situation. Forgive me if I've offended anyone. Just wanted to express a perspective that wasn't just a "fall in line" one for honesty's sake, is all. If this is too inflammatory, I'm cool with a nuke. Just don't expect a response for some hours since I'm going to bed now. See y'all on Besaid.
