  1. Updated original post. Faction information now revealed! I was hoping to have pretty artwork to go with each faction but time isn't on our side. My potential artists are kind of dragging their feet in that regard >.>. We'll hopefully have some art to add later though. Also hoping to launch the site very soon and open the doors to applications!
  2. I have several character slots available if you need any. My schedule is kind of wonky right now though but I can try my best to assist however you need. You might have a bit of trouble finding up to 12 people though. Heck, I've got more than that for pre-debut Avalon members/prospective members and I'm still having scheduling issues getting just 6 of them at the debut event. So you may want to consider trying to find a way to make it work with less people if possible. Then again, you might get lucky >.>;. But I'd suggest making a backup plan that requires less participants.

  4. I understand your frustration, Merri. And I mostly share it, as do numerous others. That said, I don't think ALL hope is lost yet. I think a large part of the problem right now is communication (or lack thereof). Eva mentioned the former Council section of the forums. The charter revote pretty much got rid of all of that, but that doesn't mean we can't further examine having a section where leaders can come together to chat about ideas and whatnot. Without the charter, there is no "council" with actual power or anything after all. But if we were to reintroduce such a section, it would need to be thoroughly discussed by the leaders and members of the community first as to avoid possible elitism, gossiping, etc. The RPC actually does get pretty decent traffic still, just not postings. So there are people "watching" the direction of the overall community even if silently. And I DO wish to use this site to breath more life into the RP community if others wish to do so as well. I wouldn't mind cleaning up the site and sending out mass emails to try to draw back old RPers into the fold by telling them about the changes to the game and the RP community. I'm sure we could design some fancy means of doing so as PS3 launch comes closer. But I (nor others) are going to put a ton of effort into a cause if nobody else is going to meet us all halfway. Assuming Archavalon has a successful launch (still in the phase where I'm gauging support levels), I personally intend to send out IC "invites" to every linkshell for its debut event and have a little mini-epic I wanted to try out, assuming other shells were interested. But to refrain from getting overly off-topic, everyone brings up valid points. The main thing though is communication. If we can't do that, then yes, there really isn't much of a community left. Edit: As a sidenote, I should mention that Sylph was kind of the unofficial RP server in FFXI. While there were other RP groups out there on other servers, Sylph dominated in the numbers category. In that regard, I can say this: The community was very unstable and dramatic during its first year, as Eva and others can attest to. After that first year though, the "Golden Age" began and I can't put into words how great RP was then, despite occasional hiccups here and there with drama. As Besaid's Rp community approaches the 1 year mark, it's POSSIBLE that our Golden Age could begin just the same way. But it really all depends on the linkshell leaders AND their members.
  5. My schedule varies every week but I voted anyway >.>. This is mostly a good idea and I hope it gets enough support to actually happen. I know most RP communities in other games have this exact same thing and itâs odd that we donât. That said, there are some issues that stem from this that are related to current community issues⦠When it comes to huge public events, they always tend to be a large success. Lots of people turn out for them. The chat box floods a mile a minute and itâs impossible to keep up on whatâs happening. Granted, I doubt thatâll last long here. After the first few weeks of these tavern gatherings, the turnout will likely dwindle to a more manageable level. That still leaves a very big problem though: the cliques and the big/little shell conundrum. As anyone whoâs honestly tried to freelance can attest to (myself included via a secret character who nobody knows yet), freelance Rpers tend to get ignored more often than not. And when theyâre not ignored, the other Rpers (whether intentional or not) make it feel like itâs bothersome to waste time Rping with you. This is also true of the big shells when dealing with the smaller RP shells. Again (whether intentional or not), the big shells make the smaller shells feel like they donât belong there. Another similar issue to the one mentioned above is the turnout. When big shells have 10-20 members turnout, itâs a bit intimidating to people outside of that shell who may only have 3-5 of their members turn out. This is made worse when those 10-20 members of the bigger shells chat mostly amongst themselves and/or members of other big shells. Whatâs the point of having community-wide events and then just interacting with the same people you normally interact with? The other Rpers usually end up quietly slipping out because theyâre never even given so much as an opening to interact with new people. Obviously, thereâs very little that can be done with this issue. Itâs not like we can put member limits on events. But the bigger shells do need to be a bit more aware of this problem so they can try to take a more proactive role in working around it. Otherwise, events like these will just keep frustrating freelance Rpers and small RP shells until they just throw in the towel and leave the community altogether (which has already started happening in some instances--and thatâs not a good sign for the community as a whole). I know the big shells donât know theyâre doing this and itâs certainly not being done on purpose. If youâre a member of one of the big shells, these arenât problems youâre likely to personally run into. But for anyone else on the outside looking in, itâs a very different (and frustrating) story. Before I get off on an endless rant though, Iâll just say that I support this endeavor. I just hope that it doesnât turn into any other large public event where the Rpers outside of the big shells get unintentionally shafted time and time again.
  6. Time for more teaser tidbits! Archavalon (or simply Avalon for short) will utilize an important faction system. Archavalon, the strong arm of one of Ul'dah's many noble houses, House Mavanix, has numerous assets available to it. This includes the Margarah fashion line, the Mavanix Academy, the Avalon Heritage Museum, and more. More details will be revealed about these factions at a later time. Each faction serves Avalon/House Mavanix and its needs first and foremost. But they will each have something to offer to outsiders as well. Factions will each have their own mini-epic storylines that will play out within the shell via the faction members. In addition, each faction will be capable of hosting a plethora of unique linkshell and public events. IC articles regarding each of Avalon's factions will hopefully be coming in the very near future. A second system Avalon may utilize is that of the Linkshell Standings system. This system will award other RP shells "points" based on their level and type of interactions with us ("interactions" include events in which we are invited to and/or events that we invite other shells to, gil contributions toward Avalon's rebuilding and/or future projects [gil donations will be used strictly for future public RP events], and so on). These points can later be used to "purchase" certain story-related things from Avalon. For instance, the Mavanix Academy faction will have dominion over the Avalon Heritage Museum. A RP shell may be interested in using their points to purchase an artifact from the museum to name one of many examples. This will in turn further enhance interactive RP shell stories. The purpose of this system is to help promote more community solidarity and cross-shell RP storylines, since many of us are not presently happy with the clique-like and isolated behavior that is growing within the RP community. However, this system may be scrapped early on depending on numerous factors. This particular system is currently not in use.
  7. From the Lodestone: Living in a Materia World Melded to gear, materia is said to imbue the bearer with enhanced powers, ranging from herculean strength to imperviousness to torrid flames. It takes not a scholar to see that the advent of materia will change our way of lifeâeven how we wage war. Yet whence came these stones of such power and versatility? The answer will at once shock and amaze: materia is born of trusty old equipment that has seen better days. Without further ado, let us examine the origins and uses of materia, that the shroud of mystery surrounding it might be lifted. The Origin of Materia That the revolutionary technique for the creation and application of materia was brought to Eorzea by the goblin geomancer Mutamix Bubblypots is a well known fact. The truth behind the origin of the stones, however, remains the subject of heated debate. Some believe that materia is advanced military technology painstakingly appropriated from Garlemald, while others speculate that it was born of Near Eastern wisdom that had long slumbered within the ancient tomes of the Great Library. Though the origin theories are many, all are agreed that, at some point in time, a fraternity of goblin scholars calling themselves the Illuminati acquired the secrets of materia. Governed by a code of secrecy, the coterie jealously guarded the knowledge. However, they were ultimately betrayed by one among their ownâaye, Mutamix. Resolving that materia should be allowed to benefit all folk rather than remain the curio of a select few, Mutamix proceeded to propagate the secrets of the craft to adventurers. And so it was that the age of materia dawned over Eorzea. The Makings of Materia The production of materia requires an apparatus known as a materia assimilator, which adventurers can use to transform to materia equipment with which they have achieved full spiritbondâthe measure of an objectâs aetheric alignment with a person. The assimilator works by reducing gear to its aetheric state, which it then crystallizes into a substance not unlike a gemstone in appearance. Thus is materia created. As might be expected, different items produce materia of varying properties. For instance, the gladius, a tool of war, houses the dual aetheric energies of a slashing weapon and its wielder's desire for victory; from it materia that grants enhanced vision can be created. * The same gear does not necessary convert into the same materia. Although certain trends may be observed in the transformation, adventurers can expect materia of varying types and potency to be created from the same item. Materia comes in four degrees of potency, indicated via numerals (I-IV). Sample Materia Intelligence: Increases intelligence Ironmanâs Will: Increases strength and vitality Fire: Increases the power of fire-based attacks Sagacious Aim: Increases magic critical hit rate Enhancing Gear with Materia Materia can be attached to equipment, thus strengthening it, by using an apparatus called a materia melder. For instance, attaching a heavensâ eye materia to an iron spatha will imbue the latter with a bonus accuracy attribute. The melding process requires the use of a compatible catalyst item. * In order to attach materia to a certain piece of equipment, Disciples of the Hand must fulfill the class and level requirements for crafting it. * Catalyst items are obtainable through gathering only. * It is possible to have equipment purged of materia by paying a fee in gil to certain NPCs. Be warned, however, that any purged materia will permanently be lost. The Dark Side... Much remains unknown about materia and its full potential. There are dark whispers, however, that tell of a forbidden branch of the craft that leads to power beyond imaginingâ¦but only at great cost.
  8. [align=center]Archavalon is primarily the arm of the noble house, House Mavanix. As such, it has a number of "factions" under its umbrella in which contribute to the house's wealth and resources. Archavalon employs a broad spectrum of employees and treats each like theyâre a member of the family itself, in large part because they essentially are. Avalonâs history spans back nearly 200 years, before even the founding of House Mavanix itself. It has transformed under each generation, starting as a small excavation team, turning into a mercenary company, being a magical based pillar under the Outer Heaven corporation, and much more. Now, under a new mysterious leader, it seems to be rebuilding itself from the ground up following the tragic loss of the previous leader. And each faction will be equally impacted from the restructure. Each faction has already been almost entirely assimilated under Archavalon where some used to mostly stand on their own.[/align] Below is a list of the current factions. [glow=magenta]Margarah:[/glow] Originally a fashion line sustained by the women of House Mavanix for nearly 200 years, Margarah has since greatly evolved. It was first founded under the name of the Sarah and Margarette Fashion Line, named after the two daughters of House Mavanix founder, Joachim. It changed its name later to "Margarah" under Katherine Mavanix's new direction, an exotic combination of its founders' names. While it still keeps to its basic clothing line, it has also expanded beyond that to profit during the increasingly dangerous times. Instead of just creating cutting edge designs for the wealthy, Margarah now creates a massive range of clothing, armor, weapons, and jewelry. It even hires alchemists to create intoxicating perfumes. It has expanded into other venues, such as cosmetics, advertising, and more. Margarah is slowly becoming an economic powerhouse within Ul'dah and beyond. It acts as a primary source of income for Archavalon. Presently led by Nina and Kalara Mavanix, the sisters of recent Patriarch Cartius Mavanix, it is rumored that the new mystery Matriarch is pressuring the two to step down so that new blood can take the helm of power. An internal battle will no doubt begin brewing if such pressure continues to mount. Employees include: Merchants, smiths, weavers, tanners, alchemists, fashion experts, advertisers, groomers, models, etc. Possible sponsored events include, but are not limited to: Fashion shows, auctions, advertising events, personal grooming (haircuts, etc), repair gatherings, etc. [glow=cyan]Mavanix Academy:[/glow] Founded by former Patriarch, Darian Mavanix, the Mavanix Academy maintains a decent grasp on Eorzean scholars. In its original form, it focused mostly on the upper-class of Ul'dah. It has since gradually evolved into one of Eorzea's many academic giants, weakened only by the temporary crumbling of Avalon's other resources as well as the current Dean's mysterious conflict with the new Matriarch. It employs numerous scholars in a range of fields who teach, study, and even experiment in a diverse range of studies. Under the new Matriarch, it has also taken new responsibilities of excavations and artifact studies. It will have oversight of the Avalon Heritage Museum upon its rebuilding. Originally, the museum was a separate entity that operated separately from the Academy. The Mavanix Academy, whose name is rumored to be changing in the foreseeable future, also delves into the study of magic in order to contribute to Archavalon's already massive knowledge base of spells. It is presently led by a rather strange Dean, Ivan Zabadar. It is rumored that he delves into rather gruesome and barbaric experiments and the new mystery Matriarch is supposedly pushing for his resignation. Employees include: Scribes, teachers, administrative support, excavators, scientists, etc. Possible sponsored events include, but are not limited to: Survey runs, excavations, presentations, experimentation prep, etc. [glow=yellow]Avalon Templars:[/glow] The physical might of Archavalon, the guard consists of those skilled in weaponry and magic alike who are ready to defend the group's resources at a moment's notice. They serve primarily as bodyguards to the group's Matriarch and other members but also defend their property (artifacts, etc) as well. In addition, the Templars control the House's means of transportation, including the Scarlet Siren (ferry), the Scarlet Seraph (airship), and the Scarlet Rook (chocobo carriage). Crew members of the Siren and Seraph are considered members of the Templars. This is also the primary branch in which intelligence gathering is done on behalf of Avalon and thus, the Templars often work with GIN (the Goblin Information Network), a small tribe of goblins who are allied with Avalon. Vertigo was the leader of this faction but disappeared mysteriously following the sudden death of Patriarch Cartius Mavanix. As such, a new militaristic man by the name of Kiba Pargux serves as the head of this branch. Employees include: Bodyguards, ferry crew members, airship crew, carriage drivers, informants, beastmen translators, etc. Possible sponsored events include, but are not limited to: Physical/magical training, escort missions, expeditions, intelligence gathering, etc. [glow=purple]The Keepers:[/glow] No subgroup is more in tune with the internal workings of Archavalon than the "Keepers." This group consists of House Mavanix's chefs, maids/butlers, and all other employees who work more directly with the actual mansion, its upkeep, and the family's internal and external relations. Many of these staff members are privy to secrets that no other group may have knowledge of, such as the location of secret documents, secret passageways, and more. They also serve as the group's primary source of entertainment by hosting parties and hiring/training musicians, artists, etc. This group is in charge of all internal and external relations concerns, often hosting gatherings of all sorts. The current head of this sector is House Mavanix's long-standing and loyal butler, Reeve. Rumors indicate that he is asking the new Matriarch for someone to take his place as head of the faction, though it's doubtful that he will cease serving the family entirely. Employees include: Chefs, gardeners, maids/butlers, construction workers, chocobo stable handlers, musicians, actors, public relations, advisers, etc. Possible sponsored events include, but are not limited to: Dinner parties, house gatherings, chocobo races, cook-offs, pest control, performances, etc. Basic Information:
  9. ((The "Mythril Eye" and associated imagery is property of Square Enix. Thread open only for the sole purpose of allowing IC responses to the issue if desired.))
  10. Hi Elvathae. Can you either respond to this post or edit your first one with the following info: 1. Rp style (casual, moderate, or heavy?) 2. Full names of leaders who can be contacted in game. Once you do that, I'll try to get you added to the linkshell list ASAP. Thanks and good luck with the shell! Hope to see ya around!
  11. I was not aware that people got this email message until recently. So I figured I better address it. The site's oldest users may have received an email about their account "being deleted." This email is in regards to the OLD RPC forums, not these ones. By that, I mean the forums we used before transferring to these ones back in the super old days. I've been trying to delete those forums and have had issues doing so, and so I decided to wipe out everything (users included) in hopes of accomplishing the forum deletion. If you received an email about an account being deleted, please be aware that the message does not have any relation to these forums. It's the OLD forums that are no longer used in which you were deleted. No account on THESE forums has ever been deleted at all (save spam bots). Sorry for the confusion. Didn't know emails would be sent out from that forum when I did the mass deletion.
  12. I originally had the same issue after the update but haven't since I did the cookie deleting. It's definitely a cookie related issue. I went ahead and tested different browsers. Having no issue with IE or Firefox. Then I tried Chrome. I had the issue (along with a registration issue). So I'm assuming you're using Chrome (my arch-nemesis )? I tried a few different things and finally got it working on Chrome properly. Basically, I went to the Chrome browser menu, selected options, then went to the "under the hood" tab. I clicked the "clear browsing data" button. Now by default, it will only delete cookies from the last day or week I think. So you have to select since "the beginning of time" option so it wipes out all cookies entirely. Just make sure that you uncheck browser history and all that stuff if you don't want to obliterate that. After I did that, Chrome worked normally like the other browsers. When doing this for Firefox awhile back, simply deleting the cookie folder didn't help. I had to actually click on the forum and main page "delete all cookies" link on the bottom. Not sure why. It was just funky like that. But to sum up, I'm not having the issue on any browser right now. But I know it's definitely a cookie related problem. If absolutely nothing works, it -could- be something related to the sessions database, but I very much doubt it. I'll run a quick repair of that table right now just to be safe though.
  13. *Just* stumbled across this by accident and thought of this thread. So here it is! It was from my path companion at the start of the R38 main story quest. Warning: Spoiler text for the start of R38 mission. Nothing significant though. Granted, I'm pretty sure I've seen "hour" used as a term as well. So it's probably fair to use both hour and bell interchangeably. Same with sun and day. Or at least, I've never cared if I see someone using the different words.
  14. Hi Verence. I posted a thread about this awhile back but it was probably pretty easy to miss. The login issue is a pretty common issue and it's a result of the last site update a couple months back when I integrated every aspect of the site (minus wiki and Lantern) into one central database. To solve it, you need to delete all cookies related to this site. You don't have to be logged in to do this (in fact, I'd suggest being logged out when going through this process just to be safe). Here are steps to take: 1) On the forum page (the page you end up on after clicking the banner), scroll to the bottom of the page. Click the grey "Delete all board cookies" link there. 2) On the front page (the page you get to by clicking the "Home" tab above the banner), scroll to the bottom and click the grey "Delete all board cookies" link again. 3) Close the browser and reopen. That should solve the login problem. If not, follow these steps: 1) Navigate to your browser's Internet Options (this process varies by browser). 2) Under the "Privacy" tab, find the option to view individual cookie files (exact name differs by browser and version). 3) Once you get to your cookie files, scroll down until you find the ffxiv-roleplayers.com folder. Delete the entire thing. If this STILL doesn't work, let me know.
  15. [align=center][/align] Updated to do list chart at last! Lots of good stuff. Be sure to check it out. http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/11012
  16. Heya Vyen! Nice to see you around finally. <--Zarik ^^
  17. [align=center][/align] Most have likely already seen this. But for the few who don't visit other forums ever, here you go: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/9220-Letter-from-the-Producer-IX-%2805-02-2011%29?p=117475#post117475 This letter states that the large 1.18 patch is coming in June, though a 1.17b -may- be given to us this month if it's feasible. Rank 30 and rank 50 dungeons are coming, along with new quest hubs and battle changes.
  18. Monsters Hunters has been confirmed to be presently inactive.
  19. Hello and welcome! I'll try to answer as pointedly and brief as possible since I'm on my way out the door in moment for work. Besaid is the unofficial RP server. It's possible to create your own custom emotes by simply typing in /em whatever. For instance, typing in: /em makes a silly face Would come out with: Castiel Mavanix makes a silly face. You can also use the preexisting emotes and even just the motion such as: /laugh motion. This gives the animation of laughing without the text if that's what you want. Interacting with others isn't too bad. You'll see RP around you often most likely, though it's mostly concentrated within individual linkshells and events. Being a freelance Rper really won't get you too far as a result. The RPC wiki has a lot of the lore documented (as well as character profiles and player-made literature). It's under the Lore tab at the top of this site. Or via this link: http://www.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/i ... =Main_Page Pretty much everyone acknowledges that Besaid is the RP server. I've seen very few trolls myself, though I'm sure they still pop up from time to time. It's not bad at all though. The non-RPers are mostly used to us now and don't do anything to interfere for the most part. Sometimes the non-RPers will even jump into the RP if they see an opening and try their hand at it. The RP community itself is pretty solid. It's a primary reason Besaid is so populated and it's also a reason so many RPers haven't quit the game yet. Please keep in mind that this game had a very premature launch and didn't get initial good reviews as a result. It's still free to play as a result and Square Enix is doing their best to fix it up before the PS3 launch, their second chance at getting it right. They've made great progress so far, but there's still a lot of work to go. The battle system is supposed to get a huge overhaul before Spring ends (this is the big update everyone is waiting for, though nobody knows for sure -when- exactly it's coming...just "in the Spring"). They're supposedly also going to fix some other key issues, such as the copy/pasted maps. Just keep all this in mind while playing ^^. Hope this helps.
  20. Nope, don't remember ya Not sure what to really say about the game atmosphere. Probably won't know much about what classes dominate until they overhaul the battle system and introduce the mysterious "job system" they mentioned recently. Race-wise...miqo'te of course dominate still >.>. Send me a tell in game when you get the chance. Glad to see you back and hope real life improves ASAP.
  21. With artwork of a female roegadyn! Unless that somehow ends up being a duskwight elezen. Then I'll just be sad ; ;
  22. I have received notification from two members and the leader that Elements is no longer active. This thread is locked and the ad on the Linkshells directory has been removed. In the event that this shell (or any other shell) makes a comeback, a new thread can be created OR you may contact myself or a moderator to have the thread unlocked and cleaned up.
  23. 20 new notorious monsters revealed to go with the patch. Check them out at the Lodestone: http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/topics/detail?id=bc103e2bebb104bc462f7c493783cf33891b7e46
  24. Posted on the front page of the Lodestone. Full patch notes can be found here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/7032-patch1.17-Patch-1.17-Notes
