I'd be willing to bet that the deity thing has something to do with elemental alignment. SE has already stated that you can make your character excel at a particular element this time around or be more balanced between the elements if you wished. In regards to the atheism stuff...you have to take into account the setting. The religious system in Eorzea so far seems very similar to that of Greek/Roman religion. There really was no such thing as "atheism" during ancient Greek and Roman times. At most, some may have believed the gods didn't give a rat's behind about humans. But even then, everyone still took it as a fact that the gods did exist. To believe otherwise would be like saying there was no such thing as gravity. Atheism is much more of a modern concept. Also, in a world surrounded by magic and monsters...it kinda makes little sense to be atheist. Now I'm not saying it would be unbelieable if they did allow you to not choose a patron deity. That would be fine if they did let you be "atheist" (or rather, agnostic). Mostly just playing devil's advocate Edit: In addition, the gods may make appearances in cutscenes or something like that. In that scenario, it'll be pretty difficult to play the atheist card . We already know the primals have a physical presence in the world and they're god-like beings themselves. Of course, it's still too soon to tell if the Twelve will have a physical presence or not.

Once you have the actual recording, I could likely host it on our main site fairly easily. When we eventually get to that point, just ask me so I can look more into it. I've already found the podcast addon. I would just need to make sure the addon would be compatible with the soon-to-be flash site first. I first need to also figure out how much monthly bandwidth the new flash site will take up.

I wouldn't be opposed to it. My only concern is whether we have the resources to add this to the list of things to do. While we do currently have 155 role-players gathered, there are still 97 on my MIA list since the transfer >.>. I've struggled enough to find web/forum experts and may struggle again when it comes to finding journalists for the future IC newspaper. So I'm wondering if it's also going to be a struggle for us to keep a podcast up and running on a regular schedule on top of everything else. But if there's enough interest, I don't see why not. It's just the finding the interested people that will be the main problem, and then keeping them interested. It would provide us something to post on the premier sites and help bridge the gap between RPers and non-RPers I suppose.

There are presently 3 known RP linkshells remaining in Final Fantasy XI. Spread out over 3 servers, they are as follows. Disclaimer: None of the groups listed here should be viewed as representatives of the RPC. While many of these RPers may make their way into Eorzea, they are still currently a different group for a different game. In addition, beware that the FFXI RP population is vastly smaller and less active today than FF14's.In addition, the RPC does not guarantee that your linkshell will necessarily get a boost from this. Many RPers here have retired from FFXI. ================================== Asura Name: Dusk Blades Contacts: Nesirae Site: http://duskblades.enjin.com/home Comments: --Realistic approach, light supernatural (no half-demons, possession, etc.) --RP focused group but will help players with mission and level together out of character also. --Pearl chat mostly IC but allow marked OOC. --There is an application process. ================================== Lakshmi (Possibly inactive now) Name: Canter Per Me Contacts: Xenedra, Blucian, Verence, Muirnin, Lyre, Rakuyu, or Sphinx. Welcome to Hydaelyn Role-Players (also known as the Role-Play Coalition, or RPC), the hub for all things RP related in Final Fantasy XIV! We hope you stick around and contribute in any way you can. If you wish to introduce yourself or have any basic questions to ask about the RPC, this is the section to do so! While you can introduce yourself in any way you see fit, here are some things to help you get started. These are some common things your fellow Rpers may be interested in knowing about you if you choose to share. --MMORPG background --RP experience --Character ideas/info --How did you learn about the coalition? --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? --Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) After (or before) you've introduced yourself, be sure to check out the following important info located in the Headlines section: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=310

I. Basic Info Characters: Kylin Felstar Primary characters: Kylin Felstar Linkshells: Order of Stormguard Primary RP linkshell: Order of Stormguard II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Heavy (IC as often as possible) Views on RP combat and injuries: I prefer to be somewhat close OOC’ly to the other combatant in order to better understand one another and not worry so much about hurt feelings or god mode accusations. Sometimes the details are worked out with the other individual in advance, sometimes they aren't. I do not usually utilize /randoming systems unless in a group setting that requires it. I respect others who choose to, but please don't expect me to respond to actions with dice rolls. I prefer RP combat to be more organic and based on a combination of skills/levels and character background. A character trained in knighthood will usually overpower a bookworm in physical combat whereas the bookworm would likely win out in magical combat. Likewise, I have a hard time believing a level 1 alt could easily overpower a level 50 character unless sneaky tactics were used (poisoning your drink, sneaking up on you, etc) or unless it's a major story villain. As for injuries, I will absolutely not lose any limbs or be perma-killed without my prior consent. Being hospitalized from severe injuries, comatose, and so on are acceptable though if worked out in advance. Views on IC romance: I’m okay with romance to an extent. I’m not a big fan of the couples that tend to RP exclusively together and ignore the rest of the community. Thus if I am involved in any romantic RP, don’t expect to see me spending all in game time with the romantic partner (though I'll certainly spend a decent chunk of time with him/her). Also keep in mind that any romantic relationship I'm involved in is strictly IC and in no way reflects my OOC feelings toward said individual. As to how far I’m willing to go: I have never and possibly never will be involved in any overly erotic RP (and if so, it will be 100% private). While I don’t mind my characters having sexual relationships, I prefer the fade to black concept when it goes that far. The furthest I would go would be kissing, some groping, and undressing (none of this in any public chat of course). After that, it would likely go to fade to black. Also note that my main character does swing both ways, and as such may 'flirt' with male or female. Again, this is strictly IC but if it makes one feel uncomfortable, please don't hesitate to say as such. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Family for my primary character is mostly set in stone at this point. The only openings left are probably that of a cousin and /maybe/ another sibling (Ky's dad has had a number of flings). I'm hesitant to have any more siblings though and will only do so under the perfect circumstances. Do not just throw yourself into my family tree somehow though. Please contact me in advance. I’m also extremely open to other non-romantic relationships (rivalries, business partners, etc), though I prefer most non-family stuff to evolve naturally. As my primary character belongs to a wealthy house, there are still plenty of opportunities for people to tie in their characters to House Felstar if they so wished to. Full-time guards, a cook, a miner working for the excavation team, a museum worker, and so on are all possibilities. Views on lore: I tend not to stray too far from established lore. I’m mostly a by the book type of role-player. While I don’t mind deviating a bit here and there, it has to be at least believable for the setting it takes place in. Royal heirs, aliens, and extreme things like that are a definite no-no in my book. Creating a fictitious building in a city, an organization, or even small societies are perfectly fine with me though so long as it doesn't go against the lore. That said, I'm not opposed to the supernatural (spirits, demons, etc) so long as it's done tastefully. I strongly believe in creative freedom in the world provided to us. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I prefer it when linkshell chat is strictly reserved for IC (in RP shells). Casual OOC chat over the linkshell channel of a RP specific group has always annoyed me to no end since I am a very heavy RPer. I also prefer to remain IC as much as possible at events with other Rpers, though I’m significantly more open to OOC commentary during such events as long as it doesn’t keep interrupting an important scene. Tells are almost always strictly OOC for me. The only time I use it to talk IC'ly to someone is if there's an explanation for talking in that channel (being right next to me and whispering in my ear, etc). Otherwise, talking into my mind usually doesn't make enough sense to me to be very accepting. /say and /party chat modes vary depending on who I'm with, though /say is certainly IC more often than not. Party chat is /usually/ OOC unless there's a private scene going on. I'm also a 'quick RPer.' By that I mean, I prefer fast-paced back and forth RP. I have nothing against those who like paragraph RP and like being super descriptive. But it's not my style, and I -do- get slightly annoyed by it when I see it in game (though I'll never say anything about it aside from right here or unless asked directly ). I feel it takes up too much time in a live environment and can cause RP exhaustion for others before the scene is allowed to fully play itself out to its max potential. I believe responses should generally come within 30-45 seconds of each other (barring circumstances like bloated chat logs, afking, or other distractions). My IC chat will be quick, precise, and only focus on what others around me can potentially perceive (no thoughts or super descriptive emotes). III. Other Info Country: United States Timezone: Eastern Time Contact info: Email-- [email protected] Discord -- Kylin#7037 In game tells should be sent to Kylin Felstar. If I'm playing another character, I usually don't want to be overly disturbed unless it's specifically for RP. ~Special announcements can be found in the posts below~

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the camera control. I also had to set the atb to "slow" because battles were -way- too fast paced for me . I didn't even know what was happening half the time and I'm still getting used to it all. Seems good so far overall though. I can see what people meant by the game seeming overly linear but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Just picked up my copy today so I'll be glued to that for awhile. There is indeed a promotional code for a special FF14 in game item, though no details on that special item are known yet. You first have to register FF13 to your SE Members account and then it gives you the promotional code. At least it did this for me.

Tomorrow marks exactly one full month since going public now and I thought it would be a good idea to give a little analysis/update. This will hopefully help us keep pushing forward. When we first went public, we had managed to first gather approximately 70 Rpers from Vanaâdiel beforehand. Since then, we have jumped up to 135 Rpers. That makes a total of 65 new role-players. Thus, weâve effectively doubled our numbers in a one month span. Recently, our numbers have dramatically slowed for the most part but theyâll likely rise again more rapidly closer to the gameâs launch. I also think launching the new RPC website (of which there are still zero donations toward) may help bring in some more Rpers under our umbrella since it gives us a reason to bump the older recruitment threads and put us front and center once again. Plus, aesthetics is actually quite important when it comes to recruitment efforts. Just remember: the more Rpers we gather together, the happier weâll all be since that translates to a lot more potential IC interactions. Speaking of recruitment threadsâ¦there are still various fan sites out there not being utilized at all. Major ones include MMORPG.com and TenTonHammer. There are other smaller ones Iâm sure. If you have an active account anywhere else, please get word of us out there. Iâve kinda been yelled at already for creating an account on a smaller fan site and making my first post an ad for us. While I agree that itâs bad etiquette, itâs still kind of hard to get us well known if nobody is talking about us. You can even find ways to make mention of us on other gaming sites, such as at Aionâs RP coalition for instance (if youâre already an active forum participant there that is). Thereâs a FF14 thread there and that site is already jammed pack with Rpers to begin with, none of which have mentioned our existence in said thread. Aside from the number of RPC members weâve gained, weâve also made other accomplishments. Weâve surpassed 1,000 messages on the forums. Weâve (almost) officially created a definition for RP. Weâve started the foundation of lore compilation in the Library. Weâve also started a monthly newsletter, the next of which will be out next week and much more legible this time around. And within the next month, weâll have our very first mini RPC event/competition hosted by the former RP community of Alexander (more info to come later). In summary, weâve made a lot of headway in the past 30 days and itâs really exciting! But weâve still got several months to keep pushing ourselves a little bit more. Iâd like us to launch the new site by no later than May if possible. It's just a matter of getting the donations to get it running right now. We also need to continue keeping RP discussions as alive as possible outside of these forums until the RPC becomes a commonly known group amongst the FFXIV player base. Other accomplishments Iâd like to see us make include boosting the statistics at the bottom of the forum main page: âmembers connected in the last 24 hoursâ could be higher I think, though I think we actually have more visitors than displayed. Itâs just that most donât bother logging in. âMost users ever online at onceâ is also pretty low for a coalition community. I've seen single RP shells get double to triple the amount for that particular statistic on their forums . Granted, the forums may end up moving and Iâm not sure if statistics transfer with everything else so it may be pointless to even try boosting those stats at this point in time. So those are some of the improvements Iâd like to see us make in the next few months. That being said, weâre still on the right track and doing very well for ourselves at this stage. So thanks to all of you active members who are making this all possible, whether you do so by lurking and unknowingly boosting our forum statistics or whether youâre a frequent poster who constantly contributes to discussions of all sorts. Thereâs still much more planned in the coming months and things can only go up from here on out! Edit: Yeah...don't worry about forum statistics right now. I just did some research regarding the forum transfer and the results aren't pretty >.>. More to come on that later.

To further clarify on the above, I wanted to chime in real fast. This event was originally made for the former Alexander Rpers but they have graciously extended it to involve us to an extent. In the future, weâll end up possibly having our own annual RPC Awards. This could end up being a massive success assuming most RP guilds involve themselves. And Iâm sure there are ways to get freelance Rpers involved as well once the discussions on it begin. The future RPC Awards will likely somewhat resemble the Oscars. Weâll end up dividing it into IC and OOC categories ranging from things like âsexiest female characterâ to âbest character introductionâ and much more. Ideally, each individual guild will hold their own version of it within their own guild, voting their own members for each category. Then the winners on the guild level will be considered nominees at the RPC level where the RPC winners are revealed at a large RP formal event. Obviously thereâs still a lot of time for discussing details since the first such event wonât be held until at least a few months after everyone is settled into the game. This particular competition will focus on creating the actual award appearance in the form of a trophy or certificate. Thus, this competition is mostly for the artistic people here. So hopefully there are lots of submissions. Your design could end up being used in our future larger event!

Poll closed. Yet another unanimous vote. For a group that likes to "chase our own tails" in the discussion threads, we sure seem to always come to the same exact consensus in the end . I was expecting more "no" votes to be honest. I'll add this to the etiquette section.
-
Voting officially begins. The poll will last for 7 days. If it does not pass, round 2 of discussions will begin and be led by someone else. If it does pass, this will be placed on the main site in the etiquette section. This is not a rule, but rather a guide for RPers. Remember that you are voting on the entire thing. Feel free to post your thoughts on why you voted a certain way if you'd like. ======================================= Definition: Role-play is defined as making a conscious effort to act out the role of a particular character. Moderate Role-player: This player tends to lean more towards their role-play than their out of character goals. They enjoy engaging in deep character development and prefer only a light amount of out-of-character conduct. This is a very legit thread with very valid concerns. It's not meant to be "bashing" on anyone from FFXI, though I can see how it may be perceived as such. All I'll say is try to avoid so many detailed examples and be more vague with them. Remember that some of the people being described may end up here very soon (if not already) and I don't want any of them to get offended/put off when they see their names pop up in examples. Back on topic though: Just about everything has been done these days in the world of RPing. It's hard for something not to be considered cliche. It's more a matter of timing and the method of implementation in my opinion. The demon stuff on Sylph, for instance, was just bad timing in that it was all back to back. I've always been okay with mixed breeds too, so long as it was done tastefully (a galka with elvaan ears would be untasteful for example).
-
Rp "tips" is pretty much the entire purpose of the site's etiquette section. We'll be posting guides to various different topics after discussing and voting on each one. That being said, this thread probably could be used to create a sort of checklist for new RPers. For instance, perhaps the first thing to put on the checklist would be deciding your characters race and gender. The next thing may be creating a name, in which a link to etiquette's naming section could be provided. We could just create a step-by-step checklist/guide to creating a brand new character that could help new roleplayers have more depth than they may otherwise have had.
-
Sorry for the double post but I forgot to mention something important. Since I have a feeling this upcoming vote is going to end up being a bit more divisive, you should probably know that it's okay to respond to the poll thread with what you voted and why. Mini campaigns against or for a particular vote is fine so long as it doesn't induce drama. For example, let's say Mason decides to vote no on the definition (not saying you will, but let's just say you do). If he wanted to, he could respond to the thread with why he did and encourage others to do the same so it can be redrafted. Similarly, someone for it can urge others to vote yes because they think it's perfect as is. Of course, more in depth responses than a simple statement like that would be nice but you get the idea. There weren't really any such responses to our first vote suprisingly, aside from changing the format. Just wanted you guys to know that it's okay to do that. If you'd rather just cast a silent vote and be done with it, that's fine of course as well. It would be helpful though to comment on why you vote how you do just in case something doesn't pass and needs reexamined. Then we have a good place to start in round 2. That all being said, I'll post the poll up tomorrow and run it for 7 days like last time. IF it doesn't pass for whatever reason, a new round 2 thread will be made where the topic can be discussed once again, drawing on comments from the previous discussion and voting results as needed. Someone else will have to lead the discussion if that is the case, since I have to focus on some other RPC stuff to keep us on track (beta is literally right around the corner after all ).
-
I'm really not sure what else to do now. Right now, it just seems like a lot of tiny nit-picking over little things and as Verence said, it's only going to get worse as it keeps getting changed. Thus, I'll put up what I have to a vote starting tomorrow. If it doesn't pass, we can essentially just start the discussion over again based on the results.
-
Added a tiny mentioning of freelance RPers and added another sentence to the definition of RP. I don't think it's a good idea making a separate section for what isn't RP. Then we might as well make a separate section for what isn't godmode or what isn't meta-gaming. I like how the emote phrase is worded personally since a lot of non-RPers have some preconceived notion that any and all emotes equate to RP. It'll help dissolve those beliefs.
-
Okay, how about this: Definition: Role-play is defined as making a conscious effort to act out the role of a particular character. This is done through oneâs language and behavior. A role-player also separates out of character behavior with their in character behavior to some degree. Spontaneous just for fun emotes do not constitute as RP unless such emotes are consistent with what the character would actually do. Role-play is basically writing and acting a believable role in a particular setting, much like characters from a movie or television show. Role-play is seeing the world through the eyes of your character rather than yourself. When one is actively role-playing, they are considered in character (IC). When talking about real life, game mechanics, and so on, one is considered out of character (OOC). Classes of RP: Role-playing can be divided into four classes: light, casual, moderate, and heavy. These are by no means the full spectrum and many role-players fall somewhere in between certain categories. Light Role-player: A player who may enjoy a form of "No-strings-attached" role-play. Tends to be out of character more than they are in-character, and generally do not participate in in-depth character development and/or Role-play. He/she may assume a spontaneous role with little planning. Casual Role-player: A light mix between being out of character, and in-character. They enjoy their out of character activities, but still enjoy engaging in role-play on a semi-regular basis. They may or may not participate in deep character development and/or plotting. Moderate Role-player: This player tends to lean more towards their role-play than their out of character goals. They enjoy engaging in deep character development and prefer only a light amount of out-of-character conduct. He/she typically has a good understanding of their characterâs traits, habits, and other details. Heavy Role-player: Full on immersion. This player enjoys staying in character as often as possible. They may still engage in out-of-character activities, though it is by no means a priority. They enjoy deep character development and plotlines, having an intimidate understanding and connection to their character. Freelance role-players, while not a "class" of RP, deserve mentioning as well. The term "freelance" refers to the role-players not affiliated with a particular RP group. ====================== Should freelance RPing be included anywhere or should we just leave that to be a common sense phrase? It's not exactly a "class" of RP like the above are and all it means is not being affiliated to any RP group. I also want to remind you all that there is a guild classification system when it comes to determining what type of RP group a guild is. RP guilds under the RPC will be required to choose a classification for themselves. This is because people looking for a guild want to know above all else what type of RP guild it is before joining. This is a major factor to deciding whether a RPer joins a guild or not. Currently, the classification system can be viewed here: http://ff14-rp.webs.com/guilds.htm Should that classification system remain as is or be adapted to fit the above categories instead? I'm hoping this will be ready to go up for official vote in the next couple days.
-
Maybe we should come up with another term to replace "hardcore." I think people are taking the casual/hardcore to the absolute extremes when they're actually not. For instance, I've always considered myself "hardcore" through all 5 years of RP in Vana'diel. I'll consider myself a hardcore RPer in Eorzea as well. Does that mean I RP 24/7? No. I basically just made whatever RP linkshell I was in my main shell, keeping it on at all times outside of dynamis/limbus. None of my characters were ever fully planned out either and sometimes I just added in character elements on the fly when I had to due to IC questions/interactions from others. Despite this, I still classified myself as "hardcore." I think that word may just come off as too derogatory to some for some reason.
-
Here's a really quickly done rough draft based on responses here. Suggestions, modifications, and so on are welcome. Based on the various responses, this is what Iâve come up with so far (some statements of which were copy/pasted here): Definition: Roleplay is defined as making a conscious and usually consistent effort to play the role of a particular character. This is done through oneâs language and behavior and also by separating oneâs out of character behavior with their in character behavior to some degree. Spontaneous just for fun emotes do not constitute as RP unless such emotes are consistent with what the character would actually do. Roleplay is in essence writing and acting a believable role in a particular setting, much like characters from a movie or television show. When one is actively roleplaying, they are considered in character (IC). When talking about real life, game mechanics, and so on, one is considered out of character (OOC). Classes of RP: Roleplaying can be divided into two classes: casual and hardcore. Casual: Casual roleplay involves less investment in a characterâs persona and background than hardcore roleplay. Casual Rpers tend to be more spontaneous and have more vague character outlines, sometimes changing their character radically on a whim. This school of RP tends to care a bit less about character relations with other characters and are often more concerned with roleplaying âon the sideâ while playing the game. In character interactions are usually limited in comparison to hardcore roleplaying. Hardcore: Hardcore Rpers tend to be heavily invested in their characters, creating in depth personalities and backgrounds while keeping it relatively constant throughout the growth of a character. They will typically have a solid understanding of their character's traits and lifeline and will typically pay more attention to smaller details about their characters, such as their quirks and habits.
-
While I likely have lots of input to add, for now I'll just comment on the emotes. There will be an entirely separate guide relating to emotes in general. So for now, there isn't much of a need to dissect that too much. We're focusing primarily on defining the concept of RP in general. While emotes may fit into the definition, there's no need to discuss it so heavily at this moment ^^
-
Using this argument, we might as well take down the entire etiquette section then . In fact, there wouldn't even be a need for the Assembly Room either. It should be noted that our definition isn't "law binding" or anything like that. This, and all other etiquette, is meant to be a guide and nothing more. If individual guilds or freelancers wish to stray completely from the mold, that's their choice. They may have difficulties getting into any heavy RP by straying too far from the norm, but it will ultimately be their choice either way.
-
This is our second formal discussion. That means it will eventually be voted on and if passed, will be placed in our etiquette section on the main site under âWhat is roleplay?â. I was hoping someone else would start the next formal discussion before me but I think some people might have been confused on how it works. Weâll discuss it amongst each other for awhile and then a proposal (2-3 paragraphs in this case probably) will eventually be drafted, examined, and then voted on. The RPCâs official definition for RP will need to be broad enough to include the casual roleplayers while still encompassing the hardcore. Here are some elements to examine in the discussions: 1. What constitutes RP? Is it our actions, behavior, or something else? On that same note, what -isnât- RP? Many of us have seen non-roleplayers label something as RP that most of us would disagree with (such as the people in FFXI who emoted silly stuff by the auction houses). Does simply emoting something random constitute real RP? Or is actual substance required? 2. How do we define âin characterâ (IC)? What is âout of characterâ (OOC)? When do the two intertwine and where is the line drawn? If necessary, there may be an entirely different section devoted to IC/OOC but at least a basic understanding is necessary for defining RP. 3. Whatâs the difference between hardcore, casual, and freelance RP? And even for the hardcore, is there a proper time and place to NOT RP? 4. How does oneâs environment and surroundings fit into RP? That should get you guys started ^^. On that same note, I was thinking that we could also possibly create a checklist for new Rpers just starting out, though Iâm unsure whether we should include that in this discussion/vote or make it something separate completely.

Since this thread is so insanely image heavy, do some of you mind editing your posts to put the pictures in spoiler tags? It should help with the loading process of this particular thread significantly. The spoiler tag is under the "Others" button right below the bold/italics button. Or you can just type it in as:

I'm terrible at creating sigs/banners. I usually depend on someone else to make me the really cool ones. When I do create one, I tend to just use an in game screenshot and then edit in text simply via Paint. My best work by far right here: >.> These ones were created by Ari/Augustine: By Solana: By Elysia: And Kes already posted the one he made for me.
