Myra couldnât help but be partially intrigued with this âDocâ fellow. His rambling revealed to her a rather surprising intellect but equally terrible social skills. She took a sip from her drink and continued observing in silence. She noticed Ora still speaking in semi-hushed tones with Whiskeyjack. The hyur should have been curious as to what they were talking about but she realized she wasnât. The roegadyn, while slightly annoying due to his booming voice and extrovert personality, was clearly no threat to her. She wouldnât admit it but Myra was becoming rather bored quickly. She decided to wait for some of the others to leave first for fear that one or more would try to stalk her or something of that manner. Paranoia once again, though she felt it was completely justified due to her past predicament. Thus, the woman rested her head against her hand and simply continued to watch the patrons of the bar.

Eorzepedia had an interview session with SE and asked some surprisingly pointed questions where we actually got some straight answers on some things >.>. http://www.eorzeapedia.com/2010/06/17/e ... -kurosawa Good info on names/surnames (and how to send tells to people), a real answer to the male miqo'te and female roegadyn issue, and the New York Times clearly doesn't research anything before asking questions!

Due to the fact that anything could go wrong during beta, we likely won't get a release date until about 1-2 months beforehand at most. If your score is anything less than 1,500, you probably won't be able to play the game too well. Especially when you factor in server lag (and there will be lag in the beginning since everyone will be crammed into the starting zones). My low score of 200 is no doubt a result of my not-so-updated graphics card but not sure if that's the same for anyone else with low scores. I'd suggest downloading all the latest drivers on your card's site if you haven't yet (some of the new drivers were literally just released yesterday). If you still get less than 1,500, you'll likely either need to upgrade for a better play experience or focus on the PS3 version for now. SE said before that this would be a high end game and it's clearly resetting graphical standards for PC. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to have to start on PS3 as a result (no way I can afford $300-500 upgrades right now lol). Also, the interview about beta I posted above was apparently botched. Not the first time Core has botched such translations so I wouldn't be surprised >.>. Here's what people are saying the actual beta response was: Obviously, that last line makes a huge difference. Meaning it'll be -less- than a month before the next phase. Also, alpha testers: These next few tests are apparently your last so use them wisely (though I think you get to move on to the next beta phase)!
-
According to a recently translated Famitsu article, the next testing phase begins in about one month. Edit: In addition, Sony has apparently added FF14 to PS3's "Greatest Hits" list already >.>

FFXIV Core scored an interview with SE at E3. It is as follows:
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eONoACmL ... eature=sub New battle system revealed. Supposedly much speedier than the alpha version.
-
Scores are as follows (though you should just pay attention to how the scene plays on your PC and mostly ignore the score). My personal score was less than 200 lol. Not sure if it has something to do with my settings or what though since my specs should be good enough to get at least 2,000 ><

The full trailer is now up: http://na.square-enix.com/e310/index.html Moogle, "summons," a mysterious horned boy, and so much more!

Benchmark: SE has unveiled the benchmark for FF14 as well as the opening Limsa Lominsa cutscenes. You may download it here: http://download.nvidia.com/downloads/nZone/demos/FFXIVBenchmark.zip It's a big file (173 MB). So may take awhile. But at least now you can know how well your machine can handle the game. Trailer: New trailer just played as well. A moogle was spotted in it apparently. Video has been uploaded to the FF14 main site under "Media." You can also view it via Zam (and/or Core and Eorzeapedia): http://ffxiv.zam.com/story.html?story=22548 Interview: FFXIV Core scored an interview with SE. It is as follows:

Myra couldnât help but grow a bit paler than usual upon hearing about the former residencies of Oryn and Luralel. Of all places, they had to be from Ulâdah. She couldnât help but wonder if they had any connection to him. As her complexion returned to normal almost as quickly as it had faded, the hyur reassured herself that she was simply being overly paranoid. Ulâdah was a large city. The chances of these individuals having any connection at all to that family was rather slim. Then again, being paranoid was exactly how one should feel when it came to that horrid familyâs patriarch. âGet a grip,â she told herself in her private thoughts. âIâm out of his hair. Thereâs no way heâd send anyone after me now.â The woman brushed a strand of her blonde hair from her face and sipped from her beverage, listening quietly to the rest of the conversation.

First set of guild teasers are now up. See the Guild Hall section. Please keep all commentary regarding the descriptions and/or teaser site in that section. You all should be able to post replies (though not new threads at this time).

"I focus mostly on history," Myra replied casually. She was surprised at Ora's transformation more by the moment. Her comment about men especially peaked the hyur's interest. Before she could say any more on the subject though, Two-Patch returned and seemed to put his attention on Ora. Yecely, seeming somewhat agitated, moved over to the bar. With Yecely and Ora otherwise occupied, Myra turned her gaze to Luralel. "A contract you say? And what is it exactly that you do?" Myra didn't seem to pay much attention to Oryn, or any of the other men for that matter. She wanted to ensure she was on good terms with her fellow women before attempting to deal with any of the possible womanizers. She couldn't help but be slightly intrigued by Oryn's partial shyness though.

I figured I'd make this thread since this is the very first RP session here on the forums and I'm sure people want to talk about it to some degree. I'm probably going to try wrapping up the scene here in the next few days since I figure there's no need to make the very first session go for too long. The thread was primarily to help people get their feet wet anyway. So what does everyone think so far about their own character and/or other characters? Personally, I think Myra has already come off as more "scholarly" than I intended her to be. Everyone keeps describing her as the "scholarly lady" . It makes me feel like I'm role-playing a nerd character  . Not saying I'm going to toss her or anything as I still intend to use her as an NPC type character in game at some point or another. This is exactly the reason everyone was encouraged to use alternative characters though. By seeing how certain people react to certain circumstances, it'll make it easier to introduce your main character when the time comes.
-
A bit of relief came to Myra when the roegadyn left the table. She was curious about what Yecely wanted to say in private to him though. The hyur watched Ora closely as she went across the tavern to get more drinks. The girlâs demeanor had changed rather suddenly. She had gone from being obnoxious to lady-like in the matter of moments. While Myra wasnât sure what exactly spurred the transformation, she knew it happened for a reason. Perhaps the elezen was planning to con someone at the table. Or perhaps it was the pressure of the group setting that got to her. Either way, Myra planned to keep a close eye on her just in case she was planning on trying anything. Luralelâs presence, along with Orynâs, was momentarily forgotten as the hyur continued studying Ora. By the time she remembered that she wasnât alone at the table, Ora had already returned with the drinks. Myraâs usually analytical gaze didnât even pick up the bizarre arrival of the strange hyur man who exited and reentered. Smiling and accepting her new drink, Myra decided to keep up her friendly act. Even though she distrusted everyone presently in the tavern outside of Yecely, it would do her no good to show as much. âSo what brings you all here in the middle of the day if you donât mind my asking?â
-
Myra sighed as the roegadyn and obnoxious elezen approached her table while Yecely was inviting the new woman to the table. The âherding techniqueâ was accomplished too late. She cursed to herself in her thoughts, took a rather large sip of wine, and then put on a fake smile. âHello Two-Patch,â Myra said with little eagerness. âA pleasure to meet you. And you as wellâ¦Orry was it? My name is Myra. And while Iâm flattered that you see me as a brainiac before even having met me, Iâm afraid I must decline your offer. Iâll be starting teaching soon and I prefer my focus to be one hundred percent on my students.â At that moment, Yecely had returned to the table with the other elezen woman. The wine was clearly starting to have its effect on Yecely as she didnât even seem to notice the roegadyn or obnoxious elezen at the table before introducing the new woman and saying something else. âHey Myra tell her your theory. You know something about women in a larger group?â The hyur wanted to just place her face into the palm of her hand then, but refrained and continued with her forced smile. âWell thatâs a theory that wonât be tested todayâ¦And itâs a pleasure to meet you Luralel.â
-
Myra frowned as she took Yecelyâs written down address. Her female âherding techniqueâ was about to go up in smoke, leaving her wide open to the roegadyn salesman and other idiotic men. At that moment, another burly roegadyn entered the tavern. His intimidating presence caused three of the men to scatter out of the building. Returning her gaze to Yecely, Myra quickly removed her frown and turned her expression to one of concern and disappointment. âLeaving so soon? Is it really because of how rowdy itâs become? Listen dear, you canât run away every time a large group of men show up. You have to stand your ground. Otherwise they win. Besides, as a journalist you really should learn to stick around the crowded areas. It could be the only way to get your story.â Myra scanned the tavern once more, her eyes settling on the elezen duskwight at the bar. âLook,â she stated as she pointed to the elezen. âWe just need to invite another woman to join us. None of these rowdy brutes will likely bother approaching us if weâre in a larger group. Will that make you feel better?â
-
Myra couldnât help but frown at the scene unfolding in the bar now. It had quickly become more populated than she expected at this time of day. To make matters worse, there was the roegadyn pouncing about and he was no doubt some kind of salesman. The hyur started thinking quickly to herself. She recalled something she had read in one of her feminist books. It had stated that while men had few issues approaching one or even two women, they were more often than not intimidated when it came to approaching a larger group of women. Myra scanned the bar with the ferocity of a warrior looking for a battle. If she could just get one more woman to sit at the table with her and Yecely, it could just be enough to prevent the salesman, or any other man present in the tavern, from approaching. Sadly, there were few women present by the looks of it. The two she saw were both up at the counter, one of which was already approached by the roegadyn. The hyur was clearly in deep thought, trying to figure out how to build up the barrier before any of the men had a chance to strike.

Thinking of dipping back into FFXI until XIV..
Kylin replied to Verranicus's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
The problem with FFXI's RP community is the fact that it started out so fragmented. There was no "RPC" or anything like it (although such a group formed briefly later in FFXI's life, but it was too late). Role-players were scattered from server to server. By the time server transfers came about, it wasn't possible to get everyone united under a single banner since a) people had non-RP friends they didn't want to leave behind and b) many probably weren't willing to shell out the cash for the actual transfer. Thus, each server's RP group naturally went about their own business with little regard to any other server's Rp groups. These RP groups were certainly still successful, but one could easily argue that the true potential of the RP community was never really reached. It's really a shocker that FFXI's RP community is even still alive at all. There are only about 3 RP linkshells left in the entire game. It's truly amazing to see role-players still hanging on with such small numbers remaining. It's also depressing to know that once those 3 shells eventually fade, so too will RP itself pretty much fade away in Vana'diel. I myself was fairly depressed when it came time to write the endings for my Sylph characters back in December. In short, no. FF14's RP community is -already- far more successful than FF11's even though the game hasn't launched yet. With 5 RP guilds (6 if you go through with making yours) ready to go already and -hundreds- of potential role-players waiting in the wings, it's safe to say we'll see a very nice RP community that will thrive for years to come. This time around, we're fully prepared 8-) -
âI mostly focus on history,â Myra said matter-of-factly. âThough thatâs not to say Iâm not familiar with other subjects.â The hyurâs eyes darted to the door, where three new men entered. She couldnât help but sigh inwardly. The new city resident had thought the bar would be quiet at this time of the day. Apparently, the denizens of the city werenât hesitant to get a drink or two in the middle of the day like she had originally expected. âI actually quite enjoy my job,â Myra continued. âEven though I deal with my fair share of rebellious and hormone raging teens, it often only takes one or two promising students to brighten the day and make you feel like youâre doing something worthwhile in life.â She looked again toward the new group of men who entered, unable to stop herself from hearing the travesty of vocabulary words coming out of the smallest one. âAnd itâs quite amusing to know that some kids have a better grasp on their vocabulary than grown adults.â She turned her head slightly to the younger elezen female and her companion, both of them having moved to the bar. Myra smiled to herself as her gaze shifted back to the men, her analytical eyes seeming to match those of a trained mercenary sizing up a situation. âCall it a hunch but I think youâll get yourself a story soon enough,â Myra stated with a slight grin as she took another sip from her cheap wine.
-
Myra's gaze followed Yecely's momentarily. She too noticed the lalafell climb out from under the table. She couldn't help but roll her eyes. It was bad enough that the elezen girl at that table already came off as obnoxious mere moments ago due to her initial over-the-top vocals, but now she had a lalafell partner come out of a hiding spot? The girl had trouble written all over her. Returning her attention to Yecely, Myra smiled once again and took another sip of her wine before speaking. "Yes, I'm new I suppose. Not my first time in the city but I have recently moved here. All for the chance to teach the city's illustrious teenagers." She couldn't help but chuckle faintly as she said it. Resting her chin on the back of her hand, Myra continued. "What brings you to this city if you don't mind my asking?"
-
The newcomer at the table startled the woman at first. She glanced up from her drink and smiled faintly at the other hyur. âMay as well be somewhat social since Iâll be living here now,â she thought to herself. âHello there,â she said still with a warm smile. âMy name is Myra. You donât plan to try selling me anything now, do you? Because I should warn you that I donât have much gil to my name until my new job starts.â

Starting location: Drowning Wench tavern Description: Having arrived in Limsa Lominsa, a mysterious woman scopes out her new home town and the denizens therein. Rules: 1. Keep OOC comments limited. Questions and comments should be taken to PM or the Assembly Room. 2. Physical fights will result in being escorted out of the tavern. 3. Takes place 4-5 months prior to the gameâs launch. 4. Be sure to read over other rules/guidelines sticky in this forum. 5. Have fun! =================================== The sun nearly blinded the hyur woman as she made her way across the bridge leading into Limsa Lominsa. It was evident that not much had changed since her last visit. Her attire, a simple cotton red and white blouse and black slacks gave her somewhat of a professional look. Her blonde hair was tied up behind her in a swirled bun, her bangs partially concealing the left side of her face. Aside from the temporary blinding from the light, the sun didn't seem to have much of an effect on the woman's nearly pale complexion. The woman continued walking across the bridge, eventually making her way into a building housing the infamous Drowning Wench tavern. The hyur confidently approached the bar and ordered herself a glass of the cheapest wine available. After the bartender poured her drink, she carefully took it to the nearest empty table and took a seat. She couldnât help but glance about the room to see what kind of patrons were present at this time of the day, high noon. A scruffy looking elezen man standing on the other side of the room gave her a wry grin and wink, forcing her to roll her eyes and look away. âMen,â she uttered quietly to herself as she took a sip from her glass of wine.

The RPC Council meeting has finally concluded after 8 pages of discussion (making it the 2nd most responded to topic on the entire forum, after "RPC--who are we?"). If the contents here don't get you excited for the future RP community, nothing will >.>;. RPC Council Summary: Guild status- ~5 RP guilds will be ready to fully launch by open beta. ((EDIT: This number has since increased since the time of this post. There are now approximately 8 RP groups)) ~All 5 guilds currently fall in the categories of moderate or heavy RP. ~At least 4 of the 5 guilds have a unique theme surrounding their creation/existence. The 5th is still under development. ~An "application criteria" category has been added to the guild registration template. ~IC guild teaser descriptions are currently pending! Expect to see a teaser site launch within a week. Only 3 of the 5 guilds will have teaser descriptions available at this time. The other two will hopefully be ready within the month. Afterward, this teaser site will launch to the broader public (Zam, Core, Eorzeapedia, etc) in order to help round up more role-players and get the overall community more excited about RP. ~Guilds may end up being represented/recognized by an emblem and official guild colors. Community Updates- ~The Council has decided to have informal gatherings amongst each other for community updates. This is an alternative to posting public updates on the forums. While a guild can certainly still post such updates, the majority is more in favor of a less formal update process. ~Informal updates will help keep leaders in semi-constant contact with one another and hopefully alleviate potential OOC tensions and drama between guilds. ~The number of times the RPC Council will convene each year is not yet decided. It will likely be twice a year, but that decision is still pending. RPC- ~The RPC may or may not exist as an IC organization in game. This is still up for debate, as we would have to cleverly come up with not only an IC name that goes with the initials "R.P.C." but also find a way to make sure the organization IC'ly doesn't intrude on anyone's RP negatively. Feel free to discuss this topic in the Assembly Room if you have any ideas. ~RPC site buttons have been prepared by both Mythis and Keir. See the Gallery. Be sure to ask permission to use the button if you wish to use one of them anywhere. ~Please welcome Rayah and Nij to the RPC Council! In addition, Jakky has been chosen to fill the second council position for Stormguard! Guild advertisement- ~Some of us have seen situations in past games in the RP community where recruitment thread wars take place. That is to say, one guild posts a recruitment thread and another one follows. Thread bump wars then proceed to take place. This will be considered bad etiquette by the RPC. A discussion/warning may possibly result from such an action, which could hurt the reputation of the offending guild(s) in the eyes of the overall RP community. ~It is asked, though not required, that anytime someone on another fan site asks broadly about FFXIV's RP community, individuals should direct them to the RPC (even if you do plug your own RP group as well). It is considered good etiquette to allow new role-players a chance to see all of their options laid out before them. Events- ~Some RP groups are familiar with the concept of an "epic" storyline that would unite the entire group for a particular purpose. The RPC will be utilizing such a system sometime after the game's launch. Our "epic" will be much broader than what many are used to and be more akin to a live ongoing event. The example used in the meeting was, for instance, a plague striking the countryside. The RPC Council would convene to create such an event (all guilds required to agree on the event), lay out a few rules, and then implement the event in game through various means. The event would then be left to individuals and guilds to play out, with occasional RPC hosted quests to keep the event in the public eye. Using the above example, a plethora of possible stories could start up within guilds, between guilds, and in the freelance RP community. Perhaps you or someone you know gets struck by the plague. Perhaps some will try to use the chaos to their own personal advantage, monetary or otherwise. Perhaps some will strive to find a cure. The possibilities are endless. These live events will occur once or twice a year. ~The RPC Awards will likely transpire on an annual basis. These will probably consist of an Olympic-like event in which various competitions are held over the course of several weeks. Competitions can range from racing (foot and/or chocobo) to monster slaying to weaving the best fabric, along with a multitude of other friendly competitions. The "RPC Awards" would likely either need renamed to fit into the IC world or we'd have to come up with a creative phrase for the initials âR.P.C.â ~If Square Enix does not happen to hold festivals in game relating to the gods, the RPC will likely host such festivals. An example would be a "harvest festival" in celebration of Nophica, the Matron.

MTG ftw! I still have a huge collection sitting in my closet >.>. Only two of my buddies actually played and neither provided much of a challenge sadly. It's also a good source of inspiration for some RP believe it or not

Table of Contents I. What is Role-Play? II. God Mode defined III. Metagaming defined I. What is Role-Play? Role-play is defined as making a conscious effort to act out the role of a particular character. This is done through oneâs language and behavior. A role-player also separates out of character behavior from their in character behavior to some degree. Spontaneous just for fun emotes do not constitute as RP unless such emotes are consistent with what the character would actually do. Role-play is basically writing and acting a believable role in a particular setting, much like characters from a movie or television show. Role-play is seeing the world through the eyes of your character rather than yourself. When one is actively role-playing, they are considered in character (IC). When talking about real life, game mechanics, and so on, one is considered out of character (OOC). Classes of RP: Role-playing can be divided into three classes: casual, moderate, and heavy. These are by no means the full spectrum and many role-players fall somewhere in between certain categories. Casual Role-player: A light mix between being out of character and in-character. They enjoy their out of character activities but still enjoy engaging in role-play from time to time. They may or may not participate in deep character development and/or plotting. They may enjoy a form of "no-strings-attached" role-play. Moderate Role-player: This player tends to lean more towards their role-play than their out of character goals. They enjoy engaging in deep character development and prefer only a light amount of out-of-character conduct. He/she typically has a good understanding of their characterâs traits, habits, and other details. Heavy Role-player: Full on immersion. This player enjoys staying in character as often as possible. They may still engage in out-of-character activities, though it is by no means a priority. They enjoy deep character development and plotlines, having an intimidate understanding and connection to their character. Freelance role-players, while not a "class" of RP, deserve mentioning as well. The term "freelance" refers to the role-players not affiliated with a particular RP group. II. God Mode defined God mode: The act of making oneâs character beyond that of the norm in a way that promotes invincibility, immortality, extreme influence, or unnatural powers that interfere with the natural laws of Hydaelyn. God mode is usually a problem that comes up during role-play conflict, though it appears elsewhere in the role-playing world as well. Do not role-play yourself as the spawn or incarnation of a god. That is god mode. Do not role-play yourself as a being from another world with the power to level cities. That is god mode. Do not role-play yourself as a prince with supreme influence over the nation leaders and their subjects. That is god mode. Do not role-play yourself as being so powerful that you can dodge any and every attack thrown at you constantly. That is god mode. You get the picture, right? Meet our exemplars, AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, or APM, and UnfortunateGuy, or UG. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about them. Example1: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan wiggles his pinky finger, causing a flaming crack to open under UnfortunateGuy's feet and convey him directly to a fiery death at the planet's core. (APM is clearly god-moding. There is simply no means within the game for any player character to do that under any circumstances. And what if the world doesn't actually *have* a flaming core?) ---------- Example2: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan gestures with his right thumb, causing a bolt of lightning to strike UnfortunateGuy and fry him to a crisp. (Still god mode. APM may very well be a Conjurer capable of tossing lightning bolts around, but UG might very well have survived the blast, depending upon how tough he is, or how resistant he is to lightning. Or maybe UG does, in fact, have tremendously fast reflexes that might allow him to dodge the bolt!) ---------- Example3: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan raises an eyebrow, causing everyone within ten yards to think that UnfortunateGuy has stinky feet. (Yep, godmode again. APM cannot dictate what other people think or feel. Whether or not UG's feet actually do stink is, of course, another matter entirely.) ---------- Example4: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan waggles his fingers, causing a bolt of lightning to streak forth in UnfortunateGuy's direction. (Not godmode! At least, not if APM can actually toss a Thunder spell.) III. Metagaming defined Metagaming refers to knowing something OOC and applying it as IC knowledge without any logical explanation. When stories are posted on the forums, they are all considered OOC knowledge unless somehow specified otherwise (such as a newspaper clippings). This applies to other OOC sources as well. Donât use OOC tools to gain IC knowledge. For example: Example1: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, having never consulted an alchemist or alchemical text in his life, spends the afternoon before the castle raid mixing together a large batch of sulfur and saltpeter. "This oughtta blow a hole in the castle wall!" (Clearly metagaming. Out-of-Character, APM obviously knows how to make gunpowder. But, even assuming that sulfur, saltpeter, and gunpowder even *exist* In-Character, there is no way that APM would know that mixing them together would do anything, much less how much of each ingredient to use.) ---------- Example2: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, faced with the prospect of raiding an imposing castle, visits the Alchemist's Guild to acquire a few healing draughts. There, he sees an old man demonstrate his new invention, "fire-sand", a black powder that explodes when exposed to fire! Intrigued, AbsurdlyPowerfulMan purchases a large sack of the "fire-sand" from the old man. "This oughtta blow a hole in the castle wall!" (Not metagaming! OOC, APM still knows what gunpowder is, but his *character* doesn't have any idea... until he happens to see the stuff in action at the Alchemist's Guild! Let's hope he has the good sense to stand well clear of any open flames between here and the castle....) ---------- Example3: UnfortunateGuy's player posts on the FFXIV RPC forums a bit of his character's background, including a secret place he has underneath a warehouse in town. Later that day, UnfortunateGuy's character opens the secret door behind the haybales, to find AbsurdlyPowerfulGuy waiting for him, sword at the ready! (Metagaming. The only reason APG's player knows about the secret place is because UG posted on the forums about it! APG's character has no way of knowing about it, much less getting there *ahead* of him to set up an ambush.)
