[NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it?
Ignacius replied to Avira's topic in RP Discussion
Honestly... it's a matter of RP characterization. If people are using profanity just to use it, it's a bit like listening to a band using the language just to use it. It sounds forced and pathetic. I've used strings of profanity at times on other characters, but it's meant to show characterization. A lack of education and proper etiquette. It doesn't work if you're otherwise eloquent because it sounds forced: "Margerie and I papproached to the porte cochere, though we found it impossible to properly drive the coach below the fucking thing..." Doesn't really work. MY WoW main, Zumoktaga, sounds like he has an extremely loose education and that he lacks a degree of social grace: "Pulled th'damn coach up! Y'ain't fittin' th'fuckin' thing under that'n, not 'less y'wanna give't a fuckin' haircut!" However, can become a great point of punctuation if a normally proper character lets slip the hound of fucks during a tense moment. Just make sure it comes off as a snap instead of your character suddenly going from Maggie Smith to Lil Wayne. In the end, it's nothing to really be offended over if it's truly part of a character's characterization. If he calls a woman a bitch and it's offensive, take it as their character being offensive to your character. Some decent people are playing repugnant characters, so don't figure they're all just trolling before you know. -
Just wanted to posit here that the Ascians have stated pretty explicitly that they're using the power of the Echo, but they are not evidently possessed of the Blessing of Light. So they must be two different things. Also, when you're divested of the Blessing of Light and regaining it, you still seem to be able to see the past all Echo-like. So they're definitely not the same thing. It could be that you need a blessing of something to make the Echo work and those beings that can use it without the Blessing of Light are getting a blessing from something else.

It's not too bad, actually. I did it in a like-level group my first time, but we were well coordinated. If you're doing it at-level, though, the fight involves around a few important things: -The tank cannot eat her direct cast. He/she needs to get around beside/behind Garuda during the Slipstream cast. It stuns and hits like a truck on you at-level; you can't eat it. -Everyone needs to save the pillars by being FAR away from them so Friction doesn't touch them. Garuda also needs to be plastered against the north end of the level, so her AOE doesn't hit the pillars. DPS also need to know how to very quickly burn the adds to save the pillars. If you still have trouble, have the tank fire a LB during Aerial Blast. The hardest part of the fight is just recovering from that AOE damage. -During the second phase, you have to tank Garuda to one side of your (now smaller) arena. Run as far away from her as possible when she teleports to do Mistral Shriek, and get behind her when she teleports to the middle to do Mistral Song. I find people tend to forget the latter. As long as your DPS can mop up the adds, you'll be fine. Unfortunately, a lot of people get jaded after a while and stop caring about mechanics, which makes doing the fight with people who have at-level gear particularly difficult. When I lead a party, I always make sure we run it like we're supposed to run it. Usually, that makes sure people aren't doing something stupid and blaming the healer because their godlike armor isn't magically making the boss die. At the worst, it makes the job easier for the healer.

I sometimes work backwards. A good example was my WoW character. I originally pulled a series of orcish names, intending to have a Night Elf that was aligned with the Horde (I was younger then). I came up with the names Zumok and Zotaga. I combined them into Zumoktaga and called it a day. I transferred servers a few times, adding character traits and retconning my cheesier backstory and ended up making his name a lynchpin of this evolution. That Zumoktaga was a Fel Night Elf, created as a sort of joke by the Burning Legion in Kalimdor as a baby after the rest of his family was murdered. He himself grew into a sort of roaming monster, one that terrorized later Horde members. Even the humans who eventually captured him and broke his bloodlust knew him by the Orcish name they gave him, Zumok Taga, which I said in the Orcish language translated to Devil Face. He then used that nickname, Devilface, as a callsign when working with his airborne military regiment (he was an Alliance paratrooper). Orleans actually worked forward. I didn't have much personality, but I picked the name from a French language site (I didn't like the randomly generated names). Ignacius was the name of my character in FFXI, also taken from a name site. Since I didn't have much to go on at first, I used a sort of New Orleans take to make him. He turned into a gambler of good dress and polite, if seedy, mannerisms, with a tribal religion behind him. That later went on to spawn my little FC my friends and I use, the Ghost Wolf Dancers (the tribe) and his later career as a smuggler and general criminal background.

I would think it would be more widely accepted depending on the location. For instance, I view Ul'dah as a scum of a city, there's rundown alleyways and crime all over the place. Though upper class dancers may be present in Ul'dah, I think they would be the exception. Limsa I would view having the 2nd largest sex worker attendance, with Gridania being the least. And these are all just my personal opinions. And let's all remember that this game is Japanese, and their attitudes towards sex workers is a lot different than that in most of the countries we live in. Here in America, prostitution (and even dancing) have historical taboos associated with them. Many of the more tight religious sects (the Mennonites being the best example that springs to mind) consider dancing and music outside a religious setting to be encouragement to sin because it might lead to sex (all those bodies pressed together and whatnot). In Japan, dancing and being sex workers are parts of a long and colorful tradition. Whether you agree with it or not (and there are people across the world who are at odds with their respective cultures) a lot of this isn't necessarily as seedy there. Being a dancer who engages in sex work is better, culturally, than just being a sex worker, and even then the idea that having a woman's company for the night for pay will lead to sex isn't so firmly ingrained on that culture.

Since the post didn't exactly state that it had to be music, I've been listening to these in the background. Knowledge of British news stories not included... SNFtevZ7hqo

As awesome as that would be, wishful thinking my friend. Yeah, we aren't usually in the habit of fixing problems.

I really wish they'd just make an RP server, then make you write out a character description sheet and summary to transfer on. It wouldn't have to be good, but it would have to take thought and effort. We'd get our own server, unclog the servers we're on, and we'd be harder to gilspam.

Only while the ward is loaded (which you've explained is apparently all the time due to the gardening thing - so at the moment... yeah). If it's not being viewed by anybody, then it's just DB entries too. It really isn't. It's up all the time. It exists, up and running, even when no one is in it. That's the entire point of what I was saying. It doesn't just exist as a database entry that's only called upon when you open your bags and doesn't really "exist" in 3d or whatever. The Wards are up 100% of the time, always running. They are always chewing up fluid memory as well as hardware space, and they take up MUCH MORE than the database entry that is your inventory. It doesn't really matter because, between FC housing and personal housing, I don't often see a ward completely empty anyway. However, the problem is that, as built, this is a terrible system for memory issues. That means SE needs to be fixing it ASAP, because a system that is built with problem is a system that needs to be rebuilt. It would likely be fine if housing was personal on spun instances and the wards were purchased, maintained, and exclusive.

Wildstar was an even better example. I built this for my guild to use as a hangout on Wildstar. This kind of plot is achievable by every single individual character. Every single one is granted a plot of land, for free, at level 14 with a full thousand item limit inside, thousand item limit outside, with 40 items inside and 40 items outside permitted to be lighting. That's every single individual character over level 14. Now, why this can't be implemented in FFXIV might be related to age or how the housing parses from the server. However, if it's being limited simply because the wards are the point of limitation, then the wards are liabilities. They could simply give everyone a personal housing area. Then, allow them to purchase wards for vast sums. Then, if they want to get fancy, let the people who own the wards build even larger upgrades. That would allow whole groups of FCs to get together for the ward, but would also mean that there could only be wards as needed. Then, if someone is being removed from a ward, they don't have to have their house sold and demolished, it can just be kicked off the ward and packed up on off-site storage until the account is reactivated. But, as they're moving to demo the houses, it seems that SE is going the route of trying to keep subs active and not using the wards as a developmental opportunity.

Balmung is the most heavily populated of the RP servers, with Gilgamesh next behind (though the other Gilgameshites don't generally hang out here in the RPC). It's sometimes easier to get into Gilgamesh, but Gilg is also a heavily populated server anyway. Still, if you can get into Gilgamesh and want to put down roots, I'll introduce you around!

Do you spend most of your life in game /playtime, and so what?
Ignacius replied to Nebbs's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Probably less than that. I try to get on nightly or every other night, but gaming isn't all I do. I work about 40-60 hours a week at my job, depending on what kind of projects I'm working on. I have band practice on most Tuesday nights, and I try to make time to practice bass at least for a little while at least two to three days a week. And I do spend time with my wife doing other things. Especially now, we're gutting our basement and preparing to update all the finishes and walls. Even then, when I'm on, I'm trying to help out my guildies, who are very often moving at their own paces through the content. The time I spend in game is split between my various interests. At present, I have to get my ARM into HW and raise my LTW, my WAR and DRG need to get to 60, but I spent last night trying to get my 60 cards to unlock a three-star unlimited deck. I also have to squeeze in my RP, which I tend to do in tells even when I'm doing other things. -

Thank you! Welcome! I wasn't on until late last night, but add Orleans Ignacius. I can help get you plugged into the Gilgamesh RP scene if you want to play around before or without transferring.

That it could be, and it's not like the MSQ is technically representative of what all happens. It's good to take the flavor text with some grain of truth. So it might be more common than the story lets on to believe. In any case, it's not likely that an Ishgardian assassination is going to bring on a chorus of lore nazi dissent. It's common enough to reference colloquially.
-
Simply put, it's possible, but it isn't the kind of thing people kind of take as par for the course. I mean, technically, anything is possible if you're not caught. I'm sure it's happened. However, Ishgard isn't a hotbed of murderous intrigue as far as assassinations go. By my understanding, it's more common to lie to gain power in an underhanded way. It's a lot more common to take credit for things you didn't do (which may involve murder) and to frame your enemies for heresy and have them killed in trials by combat.

Welcome to Gilgamesh! Let's get you plugged in. Gilgamesh people don't tend to hang out on the RPC anymore. However, the RPers are definitely around. There's a website at http://gilgamesh-rp.com/forum that you can use to hail in and get connected. If not, you definitely want to keep an eye out for the community. Generally speaking there are a bunch of us in town checking things, but few of us hang out there. Definitely keep an eye out for me (name of Orleans Ignacius) as well as a couple other community leaders. I especially recommend getting in touch with Adolar Stone, K'lyhia Khai, and get in touch with the Adventurer's Guild linkshell. Huge chunks of the housing wards are RP-owned, but the best way to get involved in the local community is to just look out for the RP. I run a lot in the open world, even if it's not in the cities. Good places to find that would be Limsa Lominsa and the Gold Saucer. Feel free to add me! As far as I know, I'll be on sometime after 6-7pm EST, so all you have to do is add Orleans Ignacius and I'll get you plugged in.
