new to RP where should I start? / new friends
Ignacius replied to andblackjack's topic in Welcome Desk
There are a lot of techniques on how to start RP. Some people go the heavy-writing direction, where they might write out a whole character arc and even ask other players to play complementary characters. Other people go the improv route, where they put together a blank (a character with a few certain mannerisms they definitely want) and then add on bits as they go until they get a working character. The former is a great way to work if you have a group together already or if you want to do a lot of off-stage writing. The latter is a great way to get into it if you can write on the fly and want to develop a niche to slide into. Most people do a combination of both. The best advice I can give is to not be afraid to experiment on your character and alter them as you go, especially at first. That makes sure you aren't shoving a square peg into a round hole and wondering why you don't fit. -

The Official "I Have Nothing to Do, Entertain Me" Thread
Ignacius replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I wish I did. Just finished up here, and I'm now headed to a doctor's appointment. Hopefully I'll be able to play tonight. Thankfully, I start vacation on Monday to coincide with my wife's fall break. -
I'll definitely get in touch with y'all sometime this week. Sure, no problem! Zip me a tell if you'd like or a PM here or on the Gilgamesh RP forums. And if you're on Gilgamesh at all, /wave at Orleans Ignacius. Even if we don't RP, I'm always down to help a brother or sister in need of a helping hand on content. Sounds like a plan, though I do have to come up with a character concept and all that jazz first. I may swing by website and see if anyone is looking for a connection that I can help them fill. I'll be in touch! Sometimes the best way to do that is to just walk in with a blank and see where it goes. I'm always down for that.

There's also a lot of RP going on in the open world if you're looking. I keep up with the RPers through the website forum and through the Adventurers Guild linkshell. I get the odd bit of RP in town, but a lot of us have some IC reasons not to show our face in Ul'dah *cough* so I can't comment on the Quicksand. But yeah, it's out there. Not as much as Balmung from what I gather, but still very active and entertaining. Granted, it's a lot different than Balmung in style and very few Gilgamesh RPers are here on the RPC (for reasons it's best not to go into unless you want to see some gaping sores). Definitely get in touch with us if you're on the server, though. Adolar Stone is the guy I usually refer people to first and foremost.

See, I wouldn't agree with any of that. There's nothing 'bestial' about Miqo'te; they're small, slim humans with some cat features. After the Lalafell, they're the 'cutesy' race. Highlanders may be very built, but they're simply 'athletic' at a push; they're still within realistic human proportions, so they don't fill the 'Big Smash' type. It all comes down to one simple factor; the cultural ideal of beauty. Roegadyns' exaggerated bodily proportions place them outside of this ideal moreso than the other races, with the exception of the Lalafell. And as we can see, Lalas are rather on the rarer side, too. Most people want to play a character they find attractive, and role-players are no exception to this. While I personally find Roegadyn hot as all hells, I accept that their physique is a bit too 'out there' for most peoples' tastes. Got me. I was thinking more in the "these look less-human." Think the difference between an orc and a human - still manlike but also not. Roe also fall into that category, but like you said, people might not be comfortable being that different and opt for something else. When 90% of the population is lithe catboi, Highlanders fulfill "big smash" just fine. They're tiny compared to big Roe, sure, but the comparison works fine regardless. I wonder if the comparison works fine because of how common the Miqo'te and Hyur are compared to Elezen and Roegadyn. Highlanders aren't really that big, but smaller people are so common that they look big by comparison.

I have no idea. I went Elezen instead of Roe for my main, but that was entirely based on my character needing to be slim and a little shady instead of a thug. However, even the Elezen are relatively rare. Almost everyone I see is a Hyur or a Miqo'te of some description, with a boom of Au Ra mixed in. Elezen seem to come in next in line, followed by Lalafels and Roegadyns. That's just my eye-check on Gilgamesh. As to why, it must be a personal preference from our group. We didn't have this problem with Granok or Draken on Wildstar, really, at least not to this degree. It could be our playerbase identifies with younger looking characters, and Roegadyn all look like grown men and women compared to the more flighty Hyur and Miqo'te. It could be our audience tends towards Japanese sensibilities, and Roegadyn are definitely not kawaii. I mean, I prefer the darker, older, larger look myself and I definitely think that the Roe women are the best looking in the game, but then again I only went with Roegadyn for my rarely played alt. I thought about switching to Roe with a Fantasia, but the look just didn't fit my RP style. So who am I to say? I'd really rather there were less Miqo'te around, though. Orleans is getting a little sick of their ubiquity...

What is your main character's reputation in all five Eorzean major cities? Are they well known in any or all? Are they wanted? Local heroes? How are they treated differently from town to town, and how does that play into your RP? I'll start as an example... Gridania: Orleans Ignacius is a known, but not well known figure in Gridania. Most of what anyone knows about him is related to the Free Company he operates. Gridania isn't a popular market for most of his smuggled products (though he does have some interests in the city) and the city government doesn't necessarily have many problems with his criminal organization. However, the Ghost Wolf Dancers are backed by the Twin Adders, and themselves are far better known as a group in Gridania. They are known to be a somewhat shady, yet ultimately tribal group tied to nature and specifically to the thrill of the hunt. As their own philosophy has a strong element of balance, the Ghost Wolf Dancers are a relatively well-known unit. Orleans Ignacius is best known as the nominal head of the organization, so his criminal activity is almost unknown by the Gridanian populace, and certainly rides well behind his reputation as a mercenary and a warrior chief. Limsa Lominsa: Orleans has a much more complex relationship with his current base of operations, Limsa Lominsa. His organization is based there and conducts most of its shipping and movements on Lominsan docks. On the surface, he's tolerated by the Maelstrom and the Admiralty. Plenty of organizations make their living raiding Garleans and selling the spoils. The Maelstrom and groups operating within Limsa Lominsa are still his best customers. However, most Lominsans are aware of his reputation, especially his violence. He's seen as a necessary evil in Limsa Lominsa by pretty much everyone. It's well known that, though he makes his living essentially by smuggling illegal goods, the real problem is that he has fewer qualms about who to sell them to. While arming Lominsan loyalist organizations, he also arms and supplies revolutionary pirates, beast tribes, the Garleans, anyone who will pay him the most. So far, Orleans has done enough service to the Maelstrom and Limsa Lominsa that they aren't considering getting rid of him, and he seems to value not sawing off the branch of the tree he is sitting on, but few in Limsa Lominsa actually trust Ignacius. That doesn't necessarily stop them from liking him, though. Ignacius lives primarily in Limsa Lominsa and is markedly charitable with his earnings, leading his questionable methods more the concern of authority figures than the average citizen. They simply know better than to get involved unless they don't mind their unclean hands. Ul'dah: The situation could not be more different in Ul'dah. Orleans' antagonistic stance towards strict government, socio-economic politics, and anti-authoritarian streak has earned him the dislike, distrust, and outright hostility of the Ul'dah government, Monetarist or otherwise. Orleans regularly disparages the government of Ul'dah and many of its tenets, and for their part Ul'dah seems keenly aware of Orleans' practices and reputation. Though he is tolerated in the city as leader of the Ghost Wolf Dancers (whose presence is diminished by his reputation there) and though he has business interests in Ul'dah aplenty (far more than Gridania), Orleans is seen as being a relatively soiled figure. Most of the Ul'dah government and plenty of its upright citizens view him as a dangerous criminal yearning to be caught. This is complicated somewhat by the presence of Ala Mhigan refugees, which form the source of Orleans' personal dislike of Ul'dah politics and also form a sort of support network for his use. Orleans sees the plight of the Ala Mhigans as similar to that of his own tribe in their homelands, and he is well known for not only employing Ala Mhigan refugees (legally and illegally), but also for publicly showering them with charity, gifts, and praise. Whether this is a personal belief or whether he is doing so as a calculated movement, the effect is the same. Orleans is extremely popular with the Ala Mhigan (and by extension, the poor underclass of Ul'dah). This popularity does nothing for his reputation in the rest of the city, who view it as further proof that Orleans isn't above board. Ishgard: Ishgard's dealings with Orleans began relatively recently, as he was not the sort of adventurer that the Holy See trucked with lightly. Though some small business was done through intermediaries at times, Ishgard saw fit to not have much of anything to do with Orleans or the Dancers. Times have changed, though. Ishgard seems to not know what to do with Orleans, as he seems to represent much of their problem with all adventurers. He is an incredibly talented warrior, and has spent much time in Ishgard with the Dancers in their capacity as tribal hunters and sellswords. In that area, he's been markedly effective. However, his seedy background, criminal reputation, and his penchant for identifying with the underclass has also brought his reputation as a criminal operator that stirs up discontent to fuel his enterprise. The effect seems to cancel out, and Ishgard sees him as a reliable and useful commodity that needs to be constantly watched to make sure his negatives do not outweigh his positives. For his part, Orleans treads lightly as he establishes himself here, though he is still more often to be found increasing his reputation in the Foundation while suspicion grows in the Pillars. Revenant's Toll: In the adventurer's paradise, Orleans criminal reputation is relatively unheralded. Being that the law is so lax in Mor Dhona, Orleans smuggling and criminal activity barely counts as criminal activity, it's mostly sales and taking care of business on the frontier. So only Orleans', and the Dancers', activities as hunters are taken into account. Both are held in high esteem, especially the Dancers as a whole. So the word that reaches most adventurers are that the group is almost certifiably insane in engaging enemies well beyond rational combat, but that Orleans is someone to call when you need people to engage in dangerous combat with even more dangerous enemies. Unfortunately for Orleans, he seems to have something of an opposite problem here than anywhere else. Though his reputation is unquestioned, his company is often held in higher regard than he is personally. Orleans, dangerous as he is, is often seen as a relatively clean and dapper dandy of his tribe and especially compared with the average Revenant's Toll adventurer (who usually also knows the ins and outs of combat). With his eternally clean hair, expensive walkabout clothes, card-playing habits, and "business acumen", he isn't seen as the dirty murderer he is sometimes called elsewhere. Very often, adventurers approach him as a salesman instead of a warrior, someone you can trust to charge into the battlefield but might weave around the muddy puddles. Though it doesn't seriously affect how much work comes his way, it very often affects the type of work that comes his way. What is your character's reputation in the cities?

I recommend a server transfer to either Gilgamesh or Balmung. Housing's a pain in the ass, but it's worth it for the population.
-
Definitely run an AV on your computer; I'm running FFXIV on a Windows 10 machine and I don't think it's an incompatibility issue.

Still the best album released this year, in my opinion. Just a fantastic album from end to end. ST3QTZDJoII

Orleans actually orders something that almost no bar has... If a bar doesn't have Benedictine, Orleans considers it a dirty hovel. As far as mixed drinks, Orleans drinks a conventional mixed drink, an old-fashioned, generally with bourbon.

I run with my FC. That makes FATE running about a million times easier and more fun. We also tend to run leves and dungeons as we go. The fun of the game isn't in what you do, it's how you do it and who you do it with.
-
It was very different. You could walk into a bar and there would be Werewolves from Werewolf: the Apocalypse, Castlevania vampires, Super Saiyans, characters from Final Fantasy games, Drizzt Do'urdin, homebrew characters that had no relation to any established setting, etc, all in the same room having random conversations. No one questioned anyone else, and most people had 6-7 characters at any one time. People often played their own relatives, etc. The place where your sword-wielding knight of Hell could talk politics with a chromed up street samurai in a darkened tavern built into a tree. It's why I've never had it in me to really be a lore nazi. We learned a whole different type or RP tolerance if you didn't want to miss meeting awesome people. Plus, by the end of the conversation, you'd make a drone rigger and he'd make a black-robed sorcerer so you could run in each others' dedicated threads. Foxberry Yeah. A friend of mine and I played a Dune story arc once; where the characters were transported accidentally to Ayenee through an experiment with Spice. His character was Harkkonen and mine one of the scientists. We started a huge brawl in the middle of this tavern and people didn't pay it much mind since it was a "Oh so there's another bar fight with scifi characters." It was pretty amusing really. No one questioned as you said, and people were interested in the story rather than who played what. I used to play relatives, but later on it got to the point where it was frowned on. Hell, I played WITH my real relatives! I can still RP with my brothers. The main sticking point is that we're older now. Back then, we'd get home from school, blitz our homework, and then hop online to run RP. These days, I sometimes have to work late into the evening. One of my brothers takes calls for the city police, so he works off-hours and takes a lot of overtime because he has two children now. The other is in the Air Force and has to continually take breaks so he can handle other business, especially since he's single and getting a bit disappointed by how hard it is to meet someone (he enlisted later in life and so he's working with a lot of 18 year olds rather than other people approaching 30). Right now, I'm the only one in FFXIV, certainly the only one with time to RP. Luckily, my wife still plays and RPs with our FC.

Don't do it. >.> I mean I'm not going to do it. (In /my/ hot tub at least ) Well, sir, I'll have you know that if I see you at Bronze Lake, I'll certainly go elsewhere for my spa needs. Ugh, can't a man share a bath with other men without talk of shit?

Don't do it. >.>

I hope so. Our version of the criminal mastermind that gets a new face so another actor can play him would be fantastic!
-
Pretty much all of this. Let's see how far this trainwreck can get! Get involved. Like a vacation at Hedonism II, it looks a mess from the outside but the whole reason you're there is to get involved.

.... You know Merlwyb is pretty pale... .... and wears a long black coat....

And that's what Larry Craig was doing; looking for vampires. And he can't even tell us, because it's a government secret.

I thought that was a non blood drinking youkai, akaname, who licked filth from bathrooms and people. Where do you people even find this stuff?? lmao Have you seen those images of perfectly clear flood water in Japan? Shit's just cleaner there...

They certainly need to do something. The thing I miss the most about Wildstar right now is the housing.
