Law Enforcement and the Impossibility of Playing It
Coatleque replied to Melodia's topic in RP Discussion
This is why in the past I have tended to shy away from those who play villains or generally despicable people. 9 out of 10 just want an excuse to be douche bags in game because they know there's no true authority to stop them. On the other side, people in the role of assumed authority have the temptation to overstep their own bounds in the opposite way. The whole concept doesn't work unless the community respects the boundary of the character(s). I have yet to threaten an arrest to anyone in game. I wouldn't do so either unless I spoke to the person in tells first to establish where they were trying to go with their RP at the time. The only real thing you can do is call for help. Once the 'offender' realizes they are surrounded by people set against them, and potentially facing blacklisting by half the RP community if they don't comply, they will probably step down. -
Who would be your character's voice actor?
Coatleque replied to TheLastCandle's topic in Fun Prompts
Deborah Kerr. She is Scottish born, has the correct hair color and complexion, and has training in suppressing her accent. Skip to 30 seconds to hear her speak with accent. -
But Kage is just as much a disaster see, so together it works. Sorry for the quick replies, but it 's the last 30 mins of work and I'm the only one here!

If you mean C'Kayah and Natalie... We've already established that all Natalie's plans end badly, so it doesn't really count here.

That's how it always starts. The interested boy endlessly teases the shy girl. Then something happens to him and she realizes how much she needed him in her life. She falls for him as she helps nurse him back to health. Then they live happily ever till-next-episode.

QFT And the whole Pirate / Paladin combo has that forbidden fruit angle that everyone loves. This is happening. It's in this thread, so it's canon, right?

Calling all techies (or, "I need a new computer.")
Coatleque replied to Ackermans's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
For 3D Acceleration you really only have two choices. NVidia or AMD (Formerly ATI). The two are so neck and neck that it's pointless to compare them here. Plenty of other forums exist if you care to read the specific points of each side. As for budget, both sides offer models at lower prices for specific price points. For NVidia, the top-end models always end in 80 or 90 (GTX680, GTX690, GTX580, etc...). The 80 is basically the 'reference' design for the series, while the 90 is just two 80's slapped together on one board. Everything below that is an 80 that was handicapped by the manufacturer as an excuse to charge you less. I would look for a 640 or 660. You can probably find something at a local Best Buy for maybe $150 or so that should handle the game with no problems. Anything you buy is going to beat out on-board Intel graphics hands down. -

Coatleque replied to Ackermans's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Possibly? I haven't used SLI myself before. Try running it on one GPU and see if it helps? You should be able to dual monitor one GPU by using the VGA out, and one of the Digital outs (DVI and HDMI share a channel on nVidia cards, last time I tried this) {edit} Regarding your edit, just because the card is rated for PCI-Ex 3 doesn't mean it's running the entire bandwidth. There's quite a few PC specs out there that are simply that, specs on paper. You'd be hard pressed to actually use them. Another example would be your NIC. I bet it's rated at 10/100/1000 Mbps. Even at full download speed, you are not using the full 1000 Mbps bandwidth because either your hard drive can't write fast enough, or the source server can't upload fast enough. Chances are it only hits 20% at max. -

Coatleque replied to Ackermans's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
At that resolution, the only bottleneck would be the cards themselves. Try disabling shadows first and see if that helps. Shading in games causes the largest video overhead, even before resolution and anti-aliasing. {edit} As far as PCI-Ex 2 vs 3, your cards are most likely not filling the bandwidth of the current bus either way. Like running a 7200 rpm drive on SATA 2 vs 3... there's no difference because the drive's physical read/write speed maxes out before the bus speed. -
Hmm... this is a tough one. Some additional things you could try: - Disable or uninstall any antivirus software (temporarily for testing) - Disable or remove any firewalls - Reset your IE settings (I know, this doesn't make sense, but Windows GUI is built around Internet Explorer ever since Windows XP. Clear the cache, reset all security settings in IE.) - Clear your DNS cache and re-register it. (Command Prompt: "ipconfig /flushdns" followed by "ipconfig /registerdns") - Disable User Account control (Control Panel - User accounts) Even more things to consider, depending how tech savvy you are: - Did you enable drive compression? This is an older tech that some newer programs do not like - Did you enable Windows NTFS encrypted files? - Try removing any peripheral devices attached to the computer (USB, Serial, Parallel), except for the mouse and keyboard. Maybe another driver is conflicting. - Are you using WiFi vs LAN? Use LAN if possible to make sure the connection is stable. - Do you have a RAID array or Mirror setup? Perhaps one of your drives is degraded. Without actually seeing the computer myself, there's little else I could suggest I hope you get this figured out. I know how frustrating it can be.

Welcome to the HRPC! I'm sure some others will be with you shortly Everybody's wiki page is different, there is no right or wrong answer there. Some people like to pour their entire story there, others like to hold back to prevent people from knowing too much information without earning it. Try to think of it as more of a cheat-sheet for yourself so its easier to keep track of how your character progresses over time. As for being shy, most of us are or were at first! One of the easiest things you can do is try to interject your own comments to other people's conversations if you happen to be listening in. Overall we're a friendly bunch, and I have yet to see anyone bite someone in-game!

When logging into the Wiki section this morning, I had to log in -twice- before it registered I was actually logged in. As in, I entered my account and logged in but still couldn't edit the page. I had to go do it again before my account name appeared at the top of the page. All was right in the world after that. *twitch* *twitch*

Are you having errors with any other application as well? If RAM was the problem, you would be having a lot more trouble than just trying to start FF XIV. If you do suspect a bad DIMM, the faster way to find it besides a memory scan is to remove all but one DIMM from the computer, then start it up and try playing the game. If it doesn't work, shut down, replace it with the next DIMM and try again. Keep going till all DIMMS have been tested. If you suspect Windows system corruption, any version after Windows XP SP3 has a handy command-line tool called "System File Check". Run a command prompt as administrator and type "sfc /scannow". This will do an in-depth file comparison of Windows core DLLs versus those in the WinSxS folder and attempt to repair any damaged files. In Windows 8 and later, it may also attempt to download missing or damaged files direct from Microsoft. You may also want to do an in-depth disk scan to make sure your hard drive isn't failing. If the game files are written over a bad block, then data will be corrupted whenever it tries to load. Run "chkdsk C: /f" and reboot. You may also want to find an application to read the SMART errors on the drive. Even if no bad blocks are found, something else may be wrong. Finally, check the Windows Event Log under "Application" and see if the launcher is throwing an AppCrash error. If so, it may reference a specific dll file that is causing the failure. In either case, it's a good idea to view these logs every month or so just to make sure the computer isn't throwing a ton of hidden errors you never see.

Chronicles of a Sultansworn in (the) Heat [open]
Coatleque replied to Coatleque's topic in Town Square (IC)
She swirled the remaining wine in her glass. The red liquid lapped at the sides of the clear cup and slowly retreated back to a pool. The Knight sighed and leaned back from her desk, flimsy chair creaking loudly once more under the weight of her armor. Even she was amazed that it still held. She gripped an arm of the chair with one hand while rubbing her forehead with the other. Another member of the Order was leaving. Pursuing his own code, as it were. The realization of just what it was the Order was made for had been too much for him, and the more she discussed it the more of a strain it left on the others as well. She had gone over it all with Sers Sadowyn and Filangieri, but the two had been of like mind and set against her. Blind zealotry. That is what they called her loyalty. And now, in her heart, she began to realize why she received this promotion; Why she was now in charge of the trial. It was the separation of Paladin from Sultansworn. This was the problem... one that Captain Jenlyns should have considered more before opening the Order's training to random adventurers. Too many now were wandering Eorzea calling themselves Paladins, following their own codes and ideals. Too few now realize why the Order even existed. To serve and protect the line of Ul. It is what they had done for centuries now, and it is what those true Paladins would continue to do so long as Ul'dah continued to stand. The question had arisen over the popularity of their current charge, Sultana Nanamo Ul'Namo. She seemed to follow a much gentler and just path than those of her predecessors, and many Paladins of today had been bolstered and encouraged by her spirit. But what if her dispositions soured? What if, Coatleque had argued, Her Grace became as ruthless as say, Sultan Sasagan Ul'Sisigan. The man who razed Sil'dih to the ground for a mere drink of water? Would they still remain with the Order? Could they still perform their duties? Ser Filangieri could not. And true to his word, he decided to preempt ever having to make this choice by leaving the Order now. A knee-jerk reaction if ever she had seen. He was gone now though, remaining a Free-Paladin and able to live by his own code once more. He had placed the honor of his family's name over the duty of the Oath he had sworn. Still, Coatleque could not fault the man. If she still had family of her own she may be tempted. In her case, however, she had no one to hold her back. Ser Sadowyn's ideals were much more disturbing to her. The woman had, in no uncertain words, stated that she would protect the city from any form of corrupting influence no matter what form that took. While Ser Filangieri's views were too narrow in Coatleque's eyes, Ser Sadowyn's were too broad. She knew now that if Nymeia intended for things to take that turn, their swords would be at each others necks. She shivered uncomfortably. The prospect of meeting the Azure Falcon in battle was not something she cared to visit. Her thoughts drifted between the others. Would they be able to hold to their Oaths as well? Natalie? No question, or at least Coatleque had felt she would remain loyal. Kage? Possibly. He would follow whoever was stronger. Roen? No, she would leave as Bartolomeo had. Captain Mynheir? Unknown. And what of the others? So many faces she knew from the Palace. Could she turn her blade upon them in the name of her liege? Coatleque leaned forward and took up her glass once more, downing what remained. These were not thoughts she should be dwelling on. Nanamo Ul'Namo was a right and just ruler, and the chances were they would all be dead or long retired before her heir would take the throne. She rose and took up her sword once more, strapping the scabbard around her waist. She had not a city, but a dynasty to defend. -

Collecting her purchases as he continued speaking she made for the door. She looked back to him. "I meant no slight against you, Ser. My time is short, however, and very important to some. May Nald'thal guide you to fortune, Master Tarot." With a slight smile and polite curtsey, she let herself out of the shop. *** -
I echo the sentiments of those above. If you feel there is nothing more to do with the character, then whatever 'retirement' you deem appropriate is entirely fitting. Whether that be death, seclusion, or building a homestead on the beach. For my part, I invest so much time and effort into a single character that I usually only play that one until I am finished with the game. --- Theoretically: If you are worried about losing all the OOC progress on the character itself, then consider simply buying a rename (if they ever become available), and use fantasia. Then you can say it's an entirely different person while not losing all the hard work.

She waited another moment then rolled her eyes with a tilt of her head. "I assume you are Mater Tarot, based on your sign board. No need to fetch me anything, as I am not here on official business." All the time she began counting out what she owed the man. She handed him the five hundred gil without further word. As a Paladin, she would not stoop to haggling, but took his listed price as his word. If he was trying to swindle her, it would be on his conscience, not hers. "Her Grace thanks you for your cooperation, Ser, and I for the broach. If there is nothing further, I shall be on my way." -
This sounds awesome. I'd love to swing by, but I have RL plans that day. If I get back in time I'll try to make some kind of appearance (non-official, of course)!

Coatleque perused over the selection of daggers and short swords, examining each one without physically touching them. She had dealt with these types of blades long enough to know what she was looking for. Nothing here would cut in quite a way synonymous with the injuries she had seen those few days beforehand. While it was true that some of the blades were ceremonial, many of them were quite fully functional. Some had traces of enhanced material makes. It was quite apparent the man hadn't properly appraised the items before mixing them all together in his display case. She stood up straight again when finished and threw a glance towards the back wall. Had she been a Brass Blade she would have pressed the issue further, however confiscation of illegal good was not her primary job description. Turning back to the man she spoke up. "I presume you have the proper permits to carry aetherically enhanced weapons, Master..." She waited for him to reveal his name. -

The aforementioned client decided to take their video wall. Here it is, not yet unpacked, but bolted to the wall of the lobby in their new sweet. I tried using a banana for reference, but you couldn't see it on the floor, so use the couch there instead. -

She eyed him warily as he continued his sales pitch. This was nothing unexpected by her, and she intended to try and use it to her advantage. Smiling back to him she shook her head. "I need nothing further from this current stock, but... Perhaps there is more you have not shown me?"
