A general notice to all Au Ra roleplayers with tribe or village specific linkshells, or anyone looking for Au Ra linkshells. Scales of Othard was created with the intent to be a very broad, general place for all Au Ra roleplay discussion, and it is my wish to be able to foster as much cooperation and roleplay opportunities for as many people as possible. This includes understanding that certain tribes or villages will want their own spaces, and supporting that. I would like to create a list of all tribes or village-based linkshells listed under the resource section of this linkshell listing. If you run an Au Ra linkshell for a tribe or village, feel free to post here, and I will link to your linkshell posting under 'resources.' If you run any Au Ra related linkshells in any capacity related to roleplay, I would love to list your linkshell, too. Thank you!

Hey Blue. Go ahead and send me a tell in-game if you'd like an invite to Scales of Othard. My character name is Ayushiridara Khatagin. I run the Scales of Othard linkshell. It's completely OOC, and a place for folks to talk all things Au Ra, for both Xaela and Raen.

The Xaela canon tribes offer a lot of differing temperaments and ideology between tribes. Inferences can also be made about general attitudes towards things, and it allows for folks to make up their own tribes. We've got 51 different puzzle pieces to play with. There is no right or wrong way to Xaela, in my opinion: once I know the general rules, I can then break or bend them to make something that I personally find more interesting. Consider that everything listed is how things once were on Othard, but our characters are all in Eorzea now: we can play characters stuck in the past, or characters that resist change, or characters embracing change, or anything in between. http://heraldry.sca.org/names/mongolian_names_marta.html this is a good primer on mongolian naming. Personally, I'm a fan of taking names from history, which is what I did for my Xaela. She's named for a Mongolian/Yuan Emperor, using the name of a tributary tribe for the Imperial tribe. Ayushiridara Khatagin. If you want a place in-game to talk Au Ra, I run the Scales of Othard linkshell. You can pick people's brains there, and everyone is super friendly. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=11298 K'hanli also created a great thread that lists which tribes people have been joining, as well as a listing of non-canon tribes. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=12127&pid=192416#pid192416 edit: Also, your city state is based on what class you choose when you first make your character. In my opinion, Grand Company choice is mostly irrelevant, unless you plan to PVP with your friends. Then it matters. If you want it to make sense from an RP perspective, cool, but if you can't make any of it fit, don't sweat it.

I came up with my own tribe for my character. It's listed on the Xaela discussion thread. I went through the list of official, listed tribes on the official forums and figured out which would be friendly, neutral, or unfriendly based on philosophies and what each gets up to. Hotgo is neutral, and dun dun dun, Fox, we're unfriendly with your tribe

I've updated the linkshell listing with names, as well as added a tab for roleplay resources. With the pre-release of Heavensward, now is a great time to join the Scales of Othard linkshell! Please send a tell to any of the members listed under the 'join' tab for your invite.

Alright, decided I'd go ahead and make the listing. Non-canon, player-made tribe. Khatagin An elusive people originating from the northern mountains of Othard, only rumor survives as violent myths of the Khatagin. Thought to be freaks of nature, the members of the Khatagin are savage and phantom-like. These semi-nomadic tribal Xaela prefer assassination over direct conflict, using fear and superstition to smother their enemies. read more. Current Members — Ayushiridara Khatagin (industrythirteen) — Sorocan Khatagin Status: Semi-closed. PM industrythirteen to discuss details.

That's perfectly fine. Will your tribe be private or open to others? Not sure how I feel about making it open to others or not just yet. I have to see what the overall climate is like for Au Ra RP.

So maintenance should be over now. Why isn't it?
industrythirteen replied to Altitis Acquired's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Yeah, as of this posting, I'm not seeing anywhere that it's been pushed back. I looked at reddit, twitter, the lodestone. But yes, 24 hours maintenance. -
A friend and I are using Mongolian names and existing tribes for our characters namings and origins. I came up with some personal background noise ages ago that I wanted to use for my Au Ra and her tribe. As my friend is using it as well, we opted to go for name that isn't listed on the naming conventions. For me, I feel more grounded using a name from history. I really don't want to get into a lore-battle over a tribal name with others, and none of the tribes on the list really fits what we're doing. I love what they've given us to work with, the descriptions amuse the hell out of me. It also gives me insights into the different ways Xaela have been living their lives. Also lets me know that what I've come up with isn't completely bonkers. I'm more than happy that a non-named tribe that isn't on the list is accounted for within the given Xaela lore. Being from the northern mountains suits us perfectly! Once I have the name secured, I will edit my post. Previous experiences make me hesitant to post character names before I can secure it.

Roleplaying etiquette for open world on Balmung
industrythirteen replied to Terra's topic in RP Discussion
To me, the whole thing just seems like a massive misunderstanding. I don't really know why the individual on the thread on the official forums felt the need to post about it, but they did. Now that it's known who was involved, and both sides of the story have been aired, I realize that this conversation is essentially taking place in two different places, and I don't know that that helps anybody. If it were me, I'd talk to the person and help clear up any OOC misunderstandings. As I've said in threads past, I hate to see misunderstandings become full-out grievances. For me, it would be well worth the time to understand how we got to this point, and what I can do to unravel it so that everyone gets right with it. Maybe the official forum original poster needs a little guidance, maybe they're just confused, maybe there's been some over-reaction, but regardless, they felt the need to post about it, and I don't feel like I should judge anyone for it; neither party involved. I'd rather see this discussion foster positive community growth, and something good come out of it. However, I know that that is the decision of the parties involved, and whether they think it is worth their time or efforts. -
In my own headcanon, I personally do see Xaela tribes actually be pretty large groups of folks; some being large, extended families, joiners, or members of other, formerly conquered tribes. It all depends on how people come together, and what they can do to sustain their numbers. There is no reason to say someone can't do a very small pack-like tribe, but it's not what I am personally interested in for my own background noise. I also see a lot of room for various tribes being in this kind of awkward position of going about life how they used to, and how they are now living with either Raen, Doman or Garlean influence putting pressure on their way of life. Intentionally, or unintentionally. As a real world example, the Mongolians did not stay nomadic steppes horsemen forever. The Mongolians were not the Mongolians overnight, either. People change, places change, and the idea that all these Xaela tribes will be all doing the exact same thing all the time, all the same way, especially with external factors (factors that eventually push our characters into Eorzea) seems to me a potentially odd and even unnecessary limitation. I'm personally more excited for the sense of conflict that causes the changes, rather than trying to hold on to how something used to be. Once we do know what the lore team intends, we can deviant in meaningful ways. A Garlean presence potentially puts pressure on Xaela resources, and in order to survive, adaptation is required. I also think it would be odd that no Xaela tribe ever ran into any Raen settlements or people. Or Doman for that matter. I have a feeling that kind of civilization would have some impact on a nomadic people, and potentially changing attitudes, whether it's material wealth, or learning about things outside of their own culture, or setting up some sort of agriculture or trade. All things to consider.

Finished a gift for Bearcave of his Au Ra tonight. It's very NSFW. -
Talking with Addison some, some things I've considered. Addison said in the conversation we were having "I don't show up at a bar on friday night and magically expect my friends to appear. I have to call, plan ahead." I hadn't thought of that initially, I snorted, and told her she was right! Bars (taverns) are the worst places to meet people IRL (subject to differing opinions, of course.) I tend to go to bars with people I already know. In many stories, taverns are where stories begin. Sometimes. They certainly don't stay there in most fantasy settings. Even so, this is the deliberate choice of a single author, where the entire story is contrived from the beginning. Nothing is left to chance, it's all planned. There is no sonder considered, as every actor and event is meant to tell a very specific story. RP, in my experience, does not work like a novel. There are too many variables that are not controllable. We cannot control other people, only our own behavior. We can certainly plan with them, however. I understand that breaking into RP can be a challenge for new RPers. This isn't anything new, this hasn't changed, and it happens to be an ongoing issue, and there are many reasons why this is, and I don't think this is necessarily isolated to FFXIV. I don't think there is ultimately one solution. I don't blame some folks for being frustrated, nor do I blame them if they haven't figured out what they need to do yet for a solution that works best for them. For any number of problems that I have to solve daily, sometimes the correct solution for me isn't immediately clear, and it takes some flailing on my part to figure out what I need to do. I think the same can be said for finding RP. I think some expectations need to be tempered, and some self-examination may be required if the problems persists if honest and sincere efforts haven't produced any results. Do I keep doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results? What can I do differently? Have I not thought through what I'm doing thoroughly enough? Have I planned my character to the point that their story is already told before I even begin? Is my character fun for me to play, or do I feel like I'm pulling my own teeth out? Am I entertaining other people? My FC purposely engages new players for this very reason. The theme is 'starting over.' Bearcave and I want to give them some place to start. However, we ask that folks met us halfway, tell us what they want out of their RP, and we will see what we can do to connect them to other members they might enjoy RPing with. After that, it is up to the player.

Just a reminder. I am open for commissions! See what I've been up to (some NSFW Au Ra smut included.) -
I love playing villainous characters. I love it when others play villainous characters, too. One of my friends from AION played one of the best villains I've ever seen in an mmo. He had one pretty simple rule he followed, which was in order to give the character shelf life, the character needs to believe that deep down, what they are doing is right. There is no muwahaha-ing from the evil laboratory, no kicking puppies or stealing candy from babies. No mustache-twirling. No brooding edge-lording off in a corner. I suppose anyone can do that, but it's just window-dressing at that point. For me, it is the sincerity in what that character believes, and a willingness to do things and get things done in a way that may appear to be selfish, cold, and calculating, even inhuman. Those methods may be cold and emotionless, but they may none the less be the most expedient measures to solving whatever problem that character is facing. But, above all, I feel that if I am to play such a character, I must, at all times, without exception, talk to everyone whom I get involved with at any level. I must tell them what I am up to, and I must, must, must have their consent, managing the conflict as tightly as possible on an OOC level. I have seen roleplayers on the defensive, I have been on the defensive as well, when I've felt people have just neglected to get my consent or given me the simple courtesy of a conversation. It is an ugly, ugly thing. When I've talked with people, I've been able to give our audience a much better show, a better storytelling and roleplaying experience. Prepare for tit-for-that; winning some and losing some scenarios. My priority is first and foremost, to those viewing the scene, should there be other folks around. I also think that these characters do have a limited shelf life, regardless of how well they are played, handled and managed. The villain or antagonist in any story is generally an obstacle to be defeated. However, roleplay is unique in that it deviates from a typical story-telling structure, where the concept on Sonder comes into play. When I play a villainous character, I want that character to eventually be shaped into something new, as the fall and redemption are tropes of which I am particularly fond. Not everyone is into that, but I'm pretty sure if my character is not challenged, if that character is not changing, my character is probably dying.

On playing characters with mental illnesses
industrythirteen replied to Zyrusticae's topic in RP Discussion
TBH, I am of the opinion that none of it should be romanticized. Shyness, as another person has said, isn't the same thing as social anxiety; nor are various ticks, and stutters, are which are symptoms of something deeper. If someone is to use that in their roleplay, I think it would behoove them to do some research first, as much as they can, to see some of the underlying causes, behaviors, attitudes, treatments, etc. The DSM, while a big massive tome of information on various conditions, it is first and foremost, for insurance purposes. And, it is constantly changing as the psychiatric community learns more, and is in no way a complete and exhaustive list. Them brains is complicated. -
So, Imma say screw it to my own advice, just once, I think. I have posted on tumblr, about some issues that have cropped up on the RPC. I haven't said anything about anyone, or lambasted anyone personally, or any particular groups. I've merely taken the topic at hand, and run with it, sharing my thoughts on things like introversion and roleplay, responsibility for roleplay and decisions. Why didn't I post here, instead? I had too much to say. Way too much for what I consider to be an appropriate-length forum post. If I'm gonna wall of text, I don't really want to do it here, if I can help it. Also, maybe I felt a little safer because, it is my tumblr. So, there is that, too—I'm a little full of shit, at least a little bit. I enjoy a little gossip here and there, but I am mostly interested in putting my ideas out there.

I demand pictures of Au Ra cuddling. ...MAKE IT HAPPEN, INTERNET. Uh. Hmm. Well... there's plenty of that on tumblr. And it's not exactly ...cuddling. Per se.:angel:

I actually REALLY love that idea  Figured out that what cats do when they press their foreheads against your hand or, well, anywhere I guess, is called bunting. (Against a wall is pressing. Thats bad. Take your cat to the vet.) So, I figured Au Ra bunting is in. I will be bunting.

So, the short and skinny is that Hellsguard name themselves quite literally (Tall Mountain, Red Duck) while Seawolves follow old-school language naming schemes. The wiki has an excellent section on Roegadyn naming. There is a naming section, as well as a dictionary. It took me ages to name my Seawolf Roe. Skaenais Krydrysswyn, which is loosely Beautiful Ice, daugther of Chalk Giant. I might have some of those backwards due to syntax I may or may not understand, but I tried, damnit. Ultimately if you want to adopt a more modern? Less-Roe? name, there's any number of ways you can come up to justify it. Whatever makes you happy!

Character Creation: Assessment and Critique
industrythirteen replied to Warren Castille's topic in FFXIV Discussion
The wording used was something more akin to "succubus", which means something far removed from bestial in my opinion. I dunno, man. I still have a really different idea of what I think a succubus, even an FFXIV succubus, looks like.
