How do you handle RP when it takes a bad direction?

QFT. That's how I feel about Eorla. She's more than a warm tunnel for a roaming adventurer. She has hopes, dreams, aspirations, and none of them really deal with finding a partner. If it happens in time, it happens, but she isn't looking for it, and she doesn't want to be involved with someone for just a tumble. I mean, she's not anti-romantic things, but she takes things at face value and fails to see any hidden agenda. If someone says "You are pretty", she takes it as, they think she's pretty and are just stating so....even if "You are pretty" really means "You're doable and I'm here for that". If she says someone is handsome or beautiful, dependent on gender, she's genuinely not hitting on them. She's simply stating something she perceives to be truth. That said, I do see a relationship in the cards for her, but not a "Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my linkpearl, so call me maybe" on day one and "I'm gonna love you until Turn 70" on day two type of thing. Edited to add more thoughts. -
How do you handle RP when it takes a bad direction?

I can appreciate that, in the spirit of RP. I don't necessarily want my chars to have peaches and cream and rainbow-crapping unicorns, because Eorzea (and life in general) is tough. There are bound to be bad things that happen. Eorla got a huge Roe fist to her jaw when she witnessed him yelling at a Mi'qote girl, calling her a whore. They were at the table next to hers, so I reached out OOCly to both the Roe and the Mi'qote, explained that my character would normally say something in a case like this, and I wanted to make sure that was okay with them before she did. They both responded warmly, and the RPer of the Roe said "My char will probably try to punch yours in the face, because he's a jerk. If you're okay with that, you're more than welcome to jump in!" And I am okay with that, because that kind of stuff can happen, and is a risk when you stand up for people who you feel are being wronged. I also knew that Eorla, being completely useless in physical combat, would not be able to dodge it. And she didn't. And I was OOCly okay with that. The Mi'qote healed most of the damage (after Eorla came to, lol), and whispered her thanks to Eorla for sticking up for her. But OOCly, in the case I stated in my OP, I know that my character is not comfortable saying no to people, and I didn't want to put her in the position where saying no would be even more awkward, both IC and OOCly. And in hindsight, in reading a lot of input and advice, I groaned out loud because there were so many things I could have done and didn't even think of. I'm thankful that the person I was chatting OOCly with came up with a solution for it. It was kind of like the RP version of the girl code. -

Very true. Off-topic for a moment, I was dying OOCly when Gwannes told Eorla not to trust the Roe she was chatting with, "Because he has a feather on his head. He probably stole it." DYING. The Roe is rped by an RL friend and he thought it was hilarious as well. -
O_O I feel like I'm stargazing at The Quicksand...I see so many of you, lol.

How do you handle RP when it takes a bad direction?

Wow! Thanks for all the amazing feedback. OOC, the other player had sent me a tell when Eorla responded hesitantly at being asked if he could join her. He sent a tell asking if Eorla wanted to be left alone (this was before the "ZOMG EORLA is SO PURDY I'm gonna make her ride my chocobo!" happened), and I responded honestly that she is rather timid. Had I known the turn it was going to take, I would have said "Well, Eorla might not mind, but I know what you're up to, buddy. Scram." But when he sent that tell, there was nothing to indicate the direction the conversation would take. I should have asked. Eorla wants to be in love someday, but she's certainly not the type of girl to ride a stranger's "chocobo", lol. ETA: I didn't even think of the linkpearl factor, lol. -
Please feel free to delete if this has already been asked, I searched and could not find it... How do you handle an RP when it takes a direction that might be bad or is a going in a direction you might not want for your character? For example. Eorla was sitting against the wall at The Quicksand, when she was approached by someone who seemed nice enough, but then I (OOCly) was reading all the other person's repeated: "can't help but stare at the beautiful girl", "pretty this, enchanting that, wondered how blah blah would feel if he touched her". Now, of course, Eorla is not a mind reader. She's actually somewhat oblivious and maybe almost naive. So when the guy says "Let's go take a ride on my chocobo, I know a private place we could go...I'd love to help you assess your magic skills", OOC I'm like "No. No no no." Eorla does not see the hidden meaning behind the words, because that's not her character. And of course she doesn't know the guy's got ulterior motives, because she can't read minds. And she's also unfailingly kind (unless she's sticking up for someone), hates offending, and despite her bashfulness, genuinely wants to make friends. So if I stay true to her character, she's going to have a hard time saying no. But OOC, I was flipping out to a fellow player. Eorla also doesn't fall quickly into bed...she's actually never even had a boyfriend. Luckily, the player I was speaking OOCly with (through tells), pointed out that Eorla had a hard day of training that left her exhausted, she could always refuse on those grounds...so Eorla did just that, and characteristically still felt bad about it. How do you handle those kinds of situations? Do you go with the flow or step in and break character (even if the other RPer doesn't know you're breaking character)?

Eorla, not really ever having been around Elezen/Lala/Roe races, finds it hard to not see the Lalafell as child-like, and feels an almost maternal instinct to protect and nurture them. Her first experience with an Elezen was when she sat down in the Carline Canopy and wound up in the lap of an Elezen male (OOC render delay strikes again), who was not happy and made no bones about roundly scolding her for such an egregious offense. However, most Elezen women she's encountered have been very kind and helpful, for which she is thankful. Roe women intimidate her, because she is very short (for a Highlander). But she does find the Roe males to be handsome. Where she's from, the bigger the man, the more protected a woman and any children would be, so naturally she is drawn to Roe and Highlander men.

Character feedback needed. Pretty please.

Weeellll....I didn't want her to be from Eorzea, but I didn't want her to be Garlean either....I'll change that as well. No need to, so long as you're aware of and okay with the fact that some people are going to raise eyebrows. Some out of ignorance - "oi, I've never heard o' this what's-it place before" - and some out of "studious learning" a.k.a. lore-sticklerness - "There's no such place. You're making this up. You're a liar. I've read every text and perused every map." That doesn't mean your character is wrong, or impossible. Just that you'll either have to put up with that or else keep it on the "down low". I just removed the names. Her past, other than generics, is something she doesn't really talk about. She isn't familiar with Thanalan, The Black Shroud, or La Noscea. It's only a minor shift, and not a huge deal. I'm just glad I can keep her at 22, lol. -

Halp: How Do You Get Random RP With Anti-Social Grump Character?
Renata Turner replied to Tiergan's topic in RP Discussion
I used this maneuver to my character's advantage yesterday. She's very shy and backwards, but she also hates offending people, so she always is quick to make sure that the other person isn't mad/offended/etc. I'm on a ps3, and sometimes things don't render right away, including player characters. So Eorla was in The Quicksand yesterday, standing at an unpopulated rail...or so she thought. Suddenly she's standing almost IN a Roegadyn. Turned it to my advantage. Made her jump in shock and stammer out an apology...led to a refreshing RP session and a new friend for Eorla. -

Goodness...I missed that...I've only been playing (the game itself) for a little under 2 months now lol. Thank you for telling me, I'm going to go fix her canon. Luckily age hasn't come up in game, right? Fixed it. I'm going to work on getting a screenshot, all I have is a craptastic pic of my tv screen lol. -
Okay...I'm working on honing Eorla's page, and I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you can give me. https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/pages/Eorla_Brynn

Hi! I'm Eorla, I'm new to Balmung with my new character, Eorla Brynn, but not new to ARR. I started over on Jenova where I still play frequently. Doing a lot of reading here for now, but hope to post more soon. I hope to see you all in-game!
