  1. I am super pumped, Rock. I've got a six pack of NOS energy drinks, a case of mountain dew, and a bottle of Bowman's, the natte ice of vodka (on sale for 8.99 - barf). Oh, and there's food, too. This is going to be the kind of weekend I haven't had since those straight-out-of-high-school days.
  2. An excellent question. I would say that there is none at this time, but there is a danger of creating one. We've already pulled quite a few members into our community from Reddit - and as for Blue Gartr, the only complaint I ever see made regarding them relates them being top progression dogs and talking smack about it, which is really completely irrelevant to roleplay and successful roleplay events. If they want to burn up all the content and then parade through town yelling about how rad their new gear is, I say, let em' have fun. We could probably bring a few of them into our community just by cheering them on, in character. I've played the progression game often enough to know how you think when you're into it, and a thumbs-up from your own server community is rare enough to be treasured.
  3. A good argument, Fenrir, I hope you don't expect me to take it seriously. Had you been concerned specifically about server population, you would have said that you were concerned about server population in the first place. You didn't even mention it. I know the game well enough to know the deflection technique you're employing here. But all of that's not really a productive line of thinking. Rather than allow this to degenerate further, I'll say one thing, and step out of this, before I get my 0% tarnished: Most of us are looking forward to the populous, messy Gilgamesh, and we're not afraid of queue-times or what have you. There's zero chance of a change at this point. The Gilgamesh community has become entrenched. Consider other options, or dig in. I mean that with the best of intentions.
  4. Something Awful isn't coming to Gilgamesh. They're set on Excalibur. (Personally, I think the goons are a riot. Following their antics in various games has something I've always enjoyed.) Reddit, on the other hand - well, those of us who consider ourselves the leaders of the Gilgamesh Or Bust movement, we've been making a special effort to recruit from Reddit, and it's paying off already. Look at the Gilgamesh directory. I'd estimate that 1 in 4 of the recent entries are from Reddit'rs. There's no war between Reddit and Gilgamesh RPC, and from the looks of things, there never will be one, unless people on our end provoke it. If you don't believe me, have a look at Reddit's FFXIV subreddits. Some of them are genuinely interested in roleplaying with us. We'll be giving them the VIP treatment. They'll be welcome at the beach party, and at any of the other major public events in, or out of character. The us vs them mentality is going out of style. I don't identify with the things you're saying here, and I don't want new people from Reddit identifying what you're saying with us. That isn't how I roll, and to be perfectly frank, the majority of the people moving to Gilgamesh don't roll that way, either. Blue Gartr? I sincerely doubt most of them will even care what we're doing. I may even raid with them, as they run pretty good progression groups. A lot the friends I've made out of this fledgling Gilgamesh crew feel the same way. We think Reddit and Blue Gartr alike should be welcomed to our events, and tolerated with good humor if they make a mess. If you don't want to play with, recruit from, and mingle with these communities, perhaps you should reconsider your server choice.
  5. Starting fresh on the 'Mesh. I am effectively remaking my Balmung character over there - levels are easy, now, and I see Gilgamesh as a very ripe opportunity. The people I've met so far over there all have fantastic attitudes.
  6. I find myself in a similar situation. I don't personally know of any linkshells/guilds/whatever around here that have formed up for exactly the purpose you describe. I can't speak for Balmung, though - I'm not too familiar with their linkshells at the moment, and they may have one that fits your plans perfectly. Having my heart set on Gilgamesh, I plan to RP with the Silver Anvil, and park myself in a progression guild for raids. I don't really like mixing the two activities. I do know that Gilgamesh will have a huge progression community, so I expect I'll find what I'm looking for early on.
  7. Yeldir either reeks of soil and armpit, or a faint spritzing of pine-cologne, depending on when and where you catch him, and whether or not he's been somewhere you can buy a decent bath in the past couple of weeks. He's meticulously groomed when he's in and about Ul'dah, and completely loses track of his appearance and well being when out on a dig or exploration.
  8. Welcome to the party. I like the sound of your character - then again, I'm always a sucker for those philosophical RP's. As for your questions: -How are you? You doin' well? You bet! -What classes are sought after in parties? It'll be tanks once again. Anything that can act as a tank will be king of the Duty Finder. -What races are seen around the most? Cat people, hands down. We're up to our ears in Miqo'tes. -How far in advance does SE typically send out the beta key? Any ideas? It varies. If you were in any of the prior betas, you're already in phase 4. May I ask how you went about getting your key? -Are there any guilds (I guess...Linkshells?) that I might want to look into? Well, I only know the Gilgamesh side of things. On that note: EDIT: - Which server would you all recommend for me to join? Will Gilgamesh be too slow, population wise, as far as RPers go? Or would it be wise to jump in on another RP server that doesn't have as many people so that I can get better entrenched in the Server's RP lore? Balmung definitely has more RP'ers, from the get-go. A lot of returning characters and a lot of pre-established linkshells are ready to go. Most of them are level 50, which is either good or bad, depending on how you personally want to play the game. Most of these 50-laden linkshells are eager for new players to show the ropes, both game-mechanics-wise an RP-wise. On the Gilgamesh side of things, we don't have quite as many people... For now. Rough estimates can be made by looking at recent entries in the player directory subforums. We're trying to make up for that by being extremely inclusive, which means lots of public events with no real entry requirements (and minimal rules), aggressive recruiting (especially from major internet communities like Reddit - this has begun to pay off already), and a go-get-em' frontiersman attitude. Each community has a different feel to it already. I'd recommend you take a long look at the events subforums, and the kinds of people and posts within them. They're quite revealing, and will help you make your decision.
  9. If you want to get to know the Gilgamesh crew a little bit better, we've got a massive skype group going on, for ooc chat, organizing, and that kind of thing! I can get you in on that, if you like. Looking forward to playing with ya'!
  10. Welcome to the party! If you have any questions, grab any of the people in this thread, or check out the excellent mentor thread sticky. If you like Skype chats, we've got a massive OOC Gilgamesh skype group for idle-chit-chat, planning, and the like, Rock or myself can hook you up with that. We're all looking forward to smelling the roses with you.
  11. I should be around tomorrow. Fellow Gilgaman here! Welcome to the community. I'll PM you my Skype info - we've got a big informal Skype group for Gilgamesh, discussing odds and ends, that kind of thing. You're perfectly welcome to join up. If you have any specific questions, I'm more than happy to answer them.
  12. Oh man. The Chocobo B.mage hat. That's great - I mean, really.
  13. Welcome! I've noticed that the new NA servers at top class, too. SE must really be pushing hard for 2.0 to be accepted in this market. I play using my smartphone's internet (not the best), and the response times are just dandy. I live in Texas. Hideous place, the settled areas, anyway. Nice where there aren't any parking lots or houses, but I've been to Cornwall, once, and that place is just beautiful from any angle, especially in the spring.
  14. At least he doesn't have Balmung. That would be awkwaaard.
  15. Wellll, well, well. Well. Is that the crystal tower I spy poking up in Mor Dhona? Of course, we're all expecting it now. Totally called the ancient-Allag-secrets beneath Mor Dhona angle right after 1.0's release, though. Even wrote Yeldir for it. Who's laughing now, Eorzea?! MEEEEEEEE
  16. I love the color scheme. Very festive.
  17. This seems like a pretty difficult initiative. It's easy enough to interest a progression-oriented player in role-playing between raids, but the community surrounding progression tends to be a lot more sink-or-swim. I think what you're looking for here, Rock, is a major raiding guild with a few good members who also enjoy roleplay, and is willing to share strategies for cutting edge content, not really out of obligation, but through the connections we foster to these guilds, via the members we get to know, (or by inserting members of this community who like raiding into those guilds). When we know who they're raiding with, we can go up to the leaders of these guilds and say, "hey, we've been getting along really well with your guys, and they tell me you've recently cleared boss x, who we've been wiping on. I don't suppose you'd mind helping us out by explaining the strat?" A lot of progression-types are happy to do this, even on cut-throat servers. They do this because it makes them feel good, in the same way teaching new roleplayers makes us feel good. You play on their ego a little bit, and they're usually ready to spill the beans, particularly if the people they're sharing the info with aren't really a competitor, in terms of the race to kill all bosses. But unless you find an entire progression guild that wants to try RP out, leaders and all, they're not terribly likely to view what we're offering them in a "trade" as useful or valuable. This is pretty much as ArmaichiA said it. ... One other thing we can do, really, is teach each other. Being a decent raider is mostly just browsing message boards, watching youtubes of boss kills, and maybe busting out windows calc now and then to make sure your crit/attack/hit ratio is ideal for the boss. I've been a raidnerd for years, Rock, so if you want to run with me up the instance ladder, I think we'd have a grand ol' time of it.
  18. It was completed by "another" team that "acquired" "leaks" of its predecessor, Crimson Echoes, under the table, much to everyone's surprise. Don't confuse it with that completely badass CT reboot that was fully 3d, though - that was never even close to being done. This isn't a remake, rather, it's an original story that bridges the gap between CT and CC. There's a fairly heavy emphasis on Magus and Schala's story, and the antagonist is sure to surprise you. In spite of being amateur work, it is against all odds pretty dang good, and fairly well written to boot. If you thought Zeal's story was the high point of CT, as I did, you're almost certain to enjoy this one. I'll just say that it's central to how Chrono Cross came about, and these guys have it written. This game is actually a really sophisticated hack of the original SNES rom, which runs on an emulator. I think the main package has everything you need to plug in a gampad and go. http://metronomeproject.blogspot.com/ (There's one major bug in this version - the first time you enter the middle ages, stay away from top left monsters - a bird and a goblin, I think. They crash the game for some reason, and they're the only ones I know of that do so.) Whoa. Getting more and more off topic here. Sorry!
  19. Ah. Well. I'll leave that to your discretion, then. SE was sneaky even in 1.0 - they left a lot out of the main story, but wrote a great deal between the lines. If you want to know more, I'm your man. Knowing what your character might discover could help you write her - of course, if you're flexible, writing in to accommodate surprises might be as fun or more.
  20. I love these intellectual journey roleplays. Right up my alley. How much do you know, personally, regarding the history of the primals on Hydaelyn?
  21. Server: Gilgamesh Primary Linkshell: The Silver Anvil Characters: Yeldir Melfusor Style of Roleplay: Any. I like big social events and off color humor as much as serious and introspective storylines. You'll find me doing everything on Gilgamesh. Strongest Skills: Making game lore work for you, and not against you, figuring out plot twists months in advance (and writing to pre-emptively accomodate them), teaching the finer points social etiquette on roleplay servers.
  22. Lore dump to the rescue! http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:History But there's a lot this doesn't tell you. A lot of FFXIV's story is still quite mysterious. Why did the dragons, led by Midardsormr, attack the Imperial Fleet? Why did this take place over Mor Dhona? Why was the Agrius over Mor Dhona? That question has an answer. There's something connecting the Allagan Empire, Sharlayan, Mor Dhona, Louisoix, Bahamut, and even the Imperials. Dalamud fell straight down into Mor Dhona for a reason, and it ain't cause that's just where the Imperials happened to be fiddling with the lunar transmitter.
  23. AO was/is one of a kind. Gradually unraveling the story of the creation of the known universe, reaching its center, removing the protector of creation's greatest secrets, only to realize an expansion later that the whole adventure was an incredibly bad idea - captivating story. Also... SQUEEAL. The only level 1 creature that talks to you when you right click it, saying exciting things like "dood", "nub", "pr0n" and "creds plz". Weird game. Rock Sandbourne (you'll bump into him later, if you haven't already) keeps telling me I've got to try TSW, as it had a spectacular story. So many games, so little time. Oh, this is an FF14 forum, isn't it? Hey, see you on Gilgamesh.
  24. Hey, nice to see our efforts to welcome Reddit are paying off already. You guys will be running this place in a month. Back to the subject at hand, welcome to The Gilg! Totally unrelated, have you played CT: Flames of Eternity?
