  1. Oh sweetie, you really should just send me a tell and say you want to RP. You know I'm always willing <3

    Hello~

Hello Welcome! I'm not sure if this will help you, because you stated you're not interested in playing on the whole tribal aspect of your chosen race, but I used this site to help me name my characters. Hope it helps! If not, that's ok too Was mostly popping in to say hello!
  3. I understood it as a means to stop potential arguments from arising. Arguing for the sake of arguing is counter-productive. However, I do not feel that assessment is accurate for this thread in particular. I do not feel this thread has degraded into petty arguments and insults and general shit talking so I personally don't see the harm in letting it continue. I would think that the mods/admins of this board would lock this thread if it was anything other than a productive discussion. At least, that is my feeling when I glance at the rules.
  4. You can say pretty much whatever you want, but like a lot situations in life, one of these answers is going to be totally wrong. Then yes, as close to never as humanly possible. If nothing else I'd like something like the RP equivalent of a "Have you tried restarting your modem?" to provide to players having these complaints. Restarting your modem won't always fix internet issues, and sitting in brooding silence and just accepting things for the way they are won't always fix issues in a roleplay community.
  5. I just want to speak from a new person perspective as well, because as a new person, if I were looking at this thread and didn't have the experiences I've had, I would be a little put off by the accusations thrown up in this thread. I posted my super boring "Hi, I'm new. Look at me" thread and at first glance, it doesn't look like a lot of people took the time to say hi back, right? Looking at that, the community seems rather closed off and cliquish, right? Not exactly. I received multiple PMs from people welcoming me to the community. I've received I don't know how many tells in game. I've found quite a few linkshells already, and though I don't talk much (not anti-social per say, more like social anxiety maybe?), I say hello, ask people how they're doing and what not and all is good. I privately replied to one of the ads in the Making Connections forum and the RP is fantastic thus far. (I do better one on one or very small groups as opposed to large gatherings) People certainly have reached out to me, and look at my post! It's rather boring. Could I do more? Absolutely. But I'm pretty comfortable where I'm at right now. So to all you newbies reading this and getting put off by what's being said here, heed this advice: The effort you put into connecting with people will have a distinct and direct correlation to what type of return you get. In other words, put in some effort into others, and they will put effort into you. EDIT: And to add, things could always be worse. There are many more insular, cliquish, and downright (dare I say it) toxic RP communities out there, and they are much much worse than what I've seen here so far. I've seen new players literally run off of RP communities before. I've been part of a community so insular, that whenever someone new wishes to join their guild, the first question they get asked is "Who are you and why are you hiding on an alt?" So far, my experiences have been extremely positive. I can't say the same about some other communities.
  6. Pretty sure everyone who responded negatively to Zyrusticae's post missed the point. None of you are subscribers for the sole reason that you're a White Mage. Or a Ninja. Or a Warrior. You have other motivators too, and those motivators also fall under "the entire game."
  7. Please explain how being forced to level as something other than the job you want to play helps you learn your class through the "core game"? Are you stating, in a round about way, that there's actually a large and substantial amount of potential new players that will only be motivated to buy and subscribe to FFXIV because of a small handful of classes in an expansion? The keyword here is new. Not a veteran leveling their 5th alt. The argument I'm seeing thrown around this thread a lot is the mistreatment of new players with this gated content, and speaking as a new player, I don't see it as mistreatment at all. This has been the way of MMOs since...well since MMOs and expansions were a thing, I imagine. (I didn't play EQ or UO. FFXI was my first MMO and this type of stuff was certainly present in that game.) So, with that being said, I'll explain how being forced to level something other than the job someone wants to play helps you learn the core game (I didn't just say class. I did say "the game" as well) when you show me all these potential new players who refuse to play FFXIV unless they have access to one of these new classes from the word "go". Because, as it stands, I just don't believe it. It just sounds absurd that a person with little to no previous history in this game will only pick up the game because of a class they have zero knowledge of.
  8. As a new player, I see nothing wrong with the requirements. In fact, I'm completely baffled how many people are upset by this. I played FFXI for years and this was common practice. Regardless, wouldn't everyone rather have a person who learned the game and their class through the core game rather than have some idiot who played for 2 days in their group? Yea it takes committment. Yup it takes work. This is an MMO. You can't expect to beat it overnight or even at all. Am I put off by this? Not at all. If enough new players are put off by it they can speak for themselves. But all the vets saying "but new players!!!!" certainly aren't speaking for me.
  9. These are all really good points. As another person who is new to the community I just wanted to say thanks for the thread and thanks for the answers.
  10. I've had generally good luck with PUGs but the last two I had made my eyes roll. Had a player yell at me for CCing. He said my job isn't to CC but to heal. Said if he saw me casting anything but Cure, I'd be kicked. And no. No one was dying because I was casting repose on adds instead if curing. In fact, it was a flawless run. I continued to Repose anyway. I might be new to the game, but I'm not a complete idiot. Thanks. Signed, An 8 year FFXI WHM veteran
  11. I had to camp the server for a few days before I was able to create a toon on Balmung. I did exactly as you said: Created my characters and saved appearance, then periodically checked. I wake up early for work (5am) so I just checked before work one day when I had time. But it's worth it
  12. Thanks for the welcome, folks. To the person I was literally just speaking to in game (I'm sorry I've forgotten your name. I'm terrible with names and even worse when I haven't had any coffee), my internet just died. I'm not sure when it will be back up either. So my sincerest apologies
  13. My most favorite band....ever [video=youtube]
  14. I dislike people who call up the clinic to complain about services they received, swearing up and down that they did not authorize their pet to be anesthetize when the consent form clearly shows that they clearly signed their signature next to it, and then accuse me of swindling them as well as forging medical documents. Have fun at your next veterinarian's office. You won't be missed.
  15. Well...kinda... I played very very briefly in 1.0 after beta testing it. I was a hardcore XI player and was really looking forward to XIV...until the finished product. I tried it, hated it, and haven't given it another shot. Until now... I'm pretty terrible at saying hello, so some stuff: --MMORPG background Final Fantasy XI, Everquest 2, World of Warcraft mainly. I've also played Archeage, Rift, Elder Scrolls Online, Aion and probably a few others I've missed. --RP experience I've roleplayed in Everquest 2, Archeage, Elder Scrolls Online as well as various forums & Skype. --Character ideas/info Sadly, I haven't really thought about it. I'm one of those that needs to RP the character and let it come naturally, instead of writing it out beforehand on a template. --How did you learn about the coalition? Google. --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? It really depends on the depth of RP I can find. --Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) I work with animals and I tend to be a bookworm. So hello
