[Balmung] Wandering Samurai seeks community
Kichiro Gunji replied to Kichiro Gunji's topic in Chronicled Connections
The Samurai has found an FC, but folks who want to build some sort of Othardian ties or plots in Eorzea are still welcome! -
Looking For: - Friends - Plots -Partners Character Name: Kiyoshi Gunji Origin: Isolated Raen Gunji Clan of Othard that was shattered upon Garlean invasion of the region. Character Profession: Shinobi that fought for the Doman Liberation Front once assigned by his Lord with the remaining survivors of his clan. Current Location: To keep an eye on his brother, the Gunji Daiyamo has sent Kichiro's brother to Ul'dah Other notable information: Kiyoshi may be a shinobi, but he's not very open about it. Most that speak to him know only he's in Eorzea on "family business." He's a bit of a polymath. Son of a Samurai father and courtesan mother, he was not able to inherit the honor or glory that would normally be of his name. Feeling the need to prove himself, Kiyoshi has become adept at many trades, although he has none of the martial prowess or combat ability found amongst the Samurai. Player Background: I'm a veteran RP'er of many years. This is my alt, but I tend to play him near as much as my main. Wanted a spot for folks who may be more interested in the less formal Gunji brother to come learn about this character.

I have a certain Raen Samurai that'd love a slot here. -
I. Basic Info Characters: Kichiro Gunji, Kiyoshi Gunji Primary character: Kichiro Gunji Linkshells: None at the moment. Primary RP linkshell: N/A II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Heavy Views on RP combat and injuries: Done with player consent, add depth and richness to storytelling. Views on IC romance: Similar to my views on RP combat and injuries, plus relationships are part of life. Good to include in a story and great driver of plots. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): I love working on background ties to characters, adventure, environment versus character plots. Having my characters as part of a shattered Raen Clan should give some indication on how I feel about this. Views on lore: Lore is great, it allows us to all share a common environment and back drop to which our characters interact. It allows world building from a common point of perspective that makes the stories we tell much more interesting and easy to collaborate on. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Great to be able to contact folks you want to RP with! III. Other Info Country: United States Timezone: US EST -5 UTC Contact info: You can reach me here or on enjin https://www.enjin.com/profile/15889368 Character Profile: https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/pages/Kichiro_Gunji

[Balmung] Wandering Samurai seeks community
Kichiro Gunji replied to Kichiro Gunji's topic in Chronicled Connections
Thanks! Right now, his story is quite wide open to be honest. A mist-based location may work well enough. I loved reading about your FC so far, it seems it'd be a good fit for Kichi. Though he's extremely loyal to his own Clan, they are in steep decline and on the verge of collapse. Maybe joining another would do him well. Adding you as a friend should we get a chance to RP. -
Looking For: - Friends - Plots Character Background: Character Name: Kichiro Gunji Origin: Isolated Raen Gunji Clan of Othard that was shattered upon Garlean invasion of the region. Character Profession: Samurai that fought for the Doman Liberation Front once assigned by his Lord with the remaining survivors of his clan. Current Location: While the Gunji elders and clan leaders decide on the plan to rebuild post war, he now visits Aldenard with the objective of building ties with those who also oppose the Garlean menace. Other notable information: While Kichiro prizes honor and duty that is often found amongst Samurai, he holds some resentment that the strict traditional culture of his clan may have lead to its downfall. He had spent some moons in Aldenard previously, but recalls little of his time there as his work in Othard was often hectic and all consuming. If someone wants him as a partner, then he will be candid that his clan would only accept him partnering with a Raen to rebuild the Gunji lineage. However, he is happy to make friends and work with a diverse group of people and his time in the Doman Liberation Front did much to shatter any previous prejudices he would have against other races. Player Background: I'm a veteran RP'er of an embarrassing number of years, however I am just returning to FFXIV after a long hiatus. I've not played with any consistency since the spring of 2017. I work a third shift in the US EST time zone UTC-5. I enjoy doing all RP, however I'm wary of dice related RP that robs the storytellers of any agency. If GM's have a method of ensuring that player choice matters more than the dice, then I can be flexible.

Hello everyone! I've RP'd an embarrassing amount of years, but haven't played FFXIV at all since last September. More heavily, almost half a year before that. My main character is a Samurai of an isolated Raen clan with extremely traditional values that was mostly shattered upon the Garlean invasion of Othard. Looking to find a way back into the RP community in Balmung. I'm not a large fan of dice combat RP events unless the GM's have ways to give the players agency over the dice. However, I'm extremely interested in collaborative story telling and world building in the game. Look forward to meeting some other RPers again!

RP Idea: Is this too crazy? Feedback wanted!
Kichiro Gunji replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
And we honestly don't know what's toxic to Miqo'te, Elezen or any non-Hyur. We might not even know what's toxic to them, since physiology in a fantasy world can work differently, same with properties of metal being different. It kinda boils down to the author with the finer details. But yeah, I think some of the largest limits will be in the number of spells as there is limited space on the body... the complexity of it and the mastery over the type of spell casting that the character has. I'm inclined towards limiting the spells to the character's own aether instead of providing an external source, because mana pools are finite and drawing from the sea of aether that all Hydaelyn exists in could lead to power playing. -

Tattoos aren't done with ink? I'm sure some alchemist could find an aetheric conductive metal based ink that won't poison those with the tattoo on them. -

Arcanima works primarily off of pre-drawn geometries, actually. It works like this: the arcanist channels aether through their body (their MP). They visualize the geometric shapes that form that aether into a specific kind of spell, say, Physick. The magic that is shaped by the geometries is then channeled through the grimoire through the ink that's used in its pages and the spell takes effect. The important thing to note is that arcanima primarily works through the arcanist forming mental imagery. However, we're told that the geometries are complex; thus the designs within grimoires are like reference notes or cheat sheets, while the ink used to draw those designs are amplifiers. It's kind of like a traditional wizard's spellbook, only instead of magical phrases and words, it's pretty fractals and circles. The only animations in which an arcanist writes in their grimoire is for summoning, as I recall. I don't remember the exact details behind it, but I'm fairly certain that summoning a carbuncle, and by extension Egis and fairies, does not require editing of a grimoire's contents or composition of arcane glyphs. I believe the initial idea you had is probably pretty accurate: tracing over an existing glyph in order to form a better mental image and thus enact the magic. Indeed, but that wouldn't render the original image powerless. So the original idea is half accurate. A tattoo as a reference guide should still work okay, but it would require someone trained in those arts... if they are using Arcanum magic, because I doubt the average joe could create a detailed geometric image in their mind and funnel their aether through it with a tattoo that is bent over many folds of flesh and muscle. -

That doesn't make a lot of sense, does that mean that they constantly have to redraw every spell/ image in their grimoire and relearn every spell on new pages? Does their grimoire get constantly filled up with just a powerless image or inky page? -

My understanding is that the algorithm is the focus, but the ink helps amplifies Arcanists' own use of his or her aether. If it was a commonly used construct, then I imagine the Arcanist could draw out the construct in his mind a lot easier with a tattoo that has aether-conductive metal based ink than he might without any illustration. However, it wouldn't be as easy as pulling it straight from the pages of a Grimoire. So it might be more limited by not only space on their body, but also how much experience they have with that particular algorithm. I'm toying with the idea of having the tattoo of the summoning ritual for Scorpio's Carbunkle across his chest or back. He learned it in his youth when studying Arcane magics, before he was a fully trained Arcanist and the idea is that he learned it under a great deal of stress or trauma. Not having his own Grimoire yet, he didn't want to forget how to summon this being that saved his life and set to having it tattooed on his body. It would also build some of the inter-personal conflict (by being super weird) he had with his Duskwight clan, leading up to his eventual exile. -
Seems like this is a good place to look these up. http://giphy.com/

I like that opinion, if the author is willing to do the leg work to determine a feasible way for it to happen, why not? But! That does give me some other possibilities. Maybe he is traveling along one of these rivers mentioned in a book about Nym's ruins. Or maybe he is doing Arcanist duties and inspecting a pirate ship, where he finds one of these things. -ponders.- Bringing this to the RPC has been greatly beneficial, thanks to everyone has given me feedback to chew on. Hopefully this helps future scholars as well.

Scorpio is something of a renaissance character, someone interested in everything. Of course, this means he's not quite the expert in any one thing. However, I'm leveling all the disciplines of the hand and land on him and a well educated type seems to fit that more. Calling him a healer isn't quite adequate, nor an Archaeologist, because he also loves to fish and cook. It's part of what got him exiled. It's why when people ask him what he does, instead of listing everything, he simply states he's a "scholar of all things Hydaelyn." Even being an all-around er, he's not without weaknesses. Cultural norms are something of an enigma to him, only learning them through books. He's not particularly strong or agile, depending on his Carbunkle to save his life more than a few times, etc. He can get so absorbed in studying or focused on something, that danger can nearly end him before he reacts. But I'm glad to hear that scholars seems to be much more justifiable than I feared originally. I can see the merit of keeping faeries hidden most times. Probably only let a select few know, like perhaps the company he joins... once he knows he can trust them, that sort of thing.

Thanks for the input so far, seems very encouraging with the direction I tend to take Scorpio. As for the lesser elementals themselves, how much personality might they have? Can they exhibit what would normally be considered sentient behavior?
-
If it doesn't matter how much thought or how good my explanation is, then I don't particularly care to RP with those people. Thanks for the warning, but I won't be bothered with that branch of elitism. I believe we talked about Wanderer's Palace before, and if this was another MMO where low level characters could walk into high level dungeons, then it would be perfect. He would be in extreme peril and only high level guild members could protect/ escort him through his studies.

I understand the contention with white and black magic, having almost torn the world assunder and now elementals are blocking it wherever possible. However, it appears Arcanist magic more based on algorithms and sophisticated mage-math with some ink based catalysts for more powerful spells with their grimoire. To be perfectly shallow, I mostly want an IC Scholar because the fairies are absolutely adorable. That said, I also like to do my best to stick with lore. So, I turn to you, RPC! for your thoughts. Some background info on Scorpio as a character. He is a young Duskwight Elezen, that may be late 20's to early 30's. Because I know that the teenage years for an Elezen might be quite extended from the bits of lore I've come across, I'm hesitant to put a firm number on it. That said, he was sent away from the caverns of his family in a sort of voluntary exile due to some peculiar personality traits. Chief among them is his insatiable curiosity. The Duskwight clan he was from was highly xenophobic, but Scorpio has been enamored with everything in Eorzea so far. He's found a lot of tales he heard growing up being proven false from his interactions with people. And he's fell in love with the color of the world outside the caverns they lived in. Every night, he continues a hobby he's had for decades, diving into as many books as he can. Since coming to Limsa Liminsa to study at the Arcanist Guild, it wasn't long before he came across stories of the city state of Nym. With trusty Carbunkle in tow, he heads to some runes of Nym. At this point, I'm debating on either a fan fiction writing piece where there is some monsters trying to kill him or scavengers or an in-game plot arch. Basically some sort of conflict. In the end, some fairy detects Scorpio's unbridled curiosity in the world and is reminded of one of its owners. It can't really act on its own, but makes the soul stone that its bound to begin to glow extremely bright. Scorpio picks it up and bam, the fairy appears and begins many long hours teaching Scorpio the lost arts of Nym. If not soul stone, then maybe tablet or some other artifact that would give the familiar agency to reach out to Scorpio.

So... been giving it a lot of thought. I've an idea for a plot arch for Scorpio to become a Scholar, but I'd like to hear some others' views of it. Would this be an OK thread for it or where should I post it?
-
The Fairies are so pretty. I really do want an IC way to have one as a companion, it will just take a lot of thought.

Honestly, people should be allowed to play whatever they want. If you want to play your job class go ahead. Though do be aware there are those who may not appreciate it. However. It is your character, not their's. Enjoy your time in the game. If you want to play that character go ahead and do it. While I don't play a WHM or a BLM icly, I know there are others who did and infact in game? The community in general doesn't care. There are those here who will get upset, I've seen it. But. In the end this is your character and you're welcome to play what you want. Not everyone will want to rp with it, but you gotta find your own sort of people who will accept it. Do know though that white magic and black magic aren't things that you would want to flaunt in public because of the Mage Wars. Even if there wasn't a stigma against WHM to begin with, the fact that black mages and white mages caused a big situation would not be something kindly looked upon. Basically just keep in mind that there are some who may not agree to the way you play, but play it how you want regardless. They don't have to rp with you afterall, and they shouldn't be forcing their view onto you. If they do, just kindly excuse yourself. At the same time people shouldn't try to force their view onto others and expect others to rp with them. That's pretty much been my philosophy with RP for 5-6 years. But I can definitely understand being super strict about lore and wanting immersion to be exactly what you say it is. I was an elitest in the past, I get it. Just takes too much energy and I feel it limits myself to play that way. So yeah, knowing this, I understand now how/why mages would be regarded the way they are. Reminds me a bit of how mages are treated in the Dragon Age world, but worse. I can understand why anyone on Eorzea would fear or be wary of them, a near world ending experience would affect cultures for generations. I personally plan on playing as a Scholar, but this helps me learn how other RP'ers will react and why I might run into resistance in places. It also helps me with forming my own creative backgrounds or how my character might react to others. So all of your input is invaluable to me, I greatly appreciate it.
-
I have no problems with RP'ers having a bit of special snowflake in them, everyone should hav license to be the protagonist of their own story. I'm no elitest and would rather all RP'ers enjoy themselves when I interact with them. However, I can definitely see how this might present challenges in a continuity of lore setting. -ponders- Will have to be creative then. Soulstones and magic do seem to give you a lot of tools to use creativity with wide boundaries. Thanks for the insight! Gives me a lot to think on.
-
So Scorpio should be terrified or in disbelief if anyone claims to actually be a black mage.... and in awe or disbelief if they are a white mage? Hmmn, that seems rather unfair to RP'ers if they simply want to RP as their chosen job class.
-
It's complicated. They are things in the game. The main-character (aka, you the player) can become one. ...your average person in the world cannot. Okay, that's better. I mean, the player characters of the world are heroes, right? So it's feasible that there are enough new Warriors of Light or whatever they are to be called in 2.0 that can become these white/ black mages. Still, to anyone who hasn't attained that level of skill or mastery in magic, they would appear quite powerful/ special? Just trying to think how my Scholar would react to a white mage/ black mage.
-
Sorry, new to FFXIV RP. But this is the first I've come across this and now I've seen it mentioned multiple times. White Mages aren't a thing in Eorzea? Are Black Mages? This seems confusing.
