  1. Do we actually know that Hingashi is under Garlean control? I know we see soldiers in Kugane in the trailer that appear to be Garlean, but that's a city that is apparently open for trade with other nations, including, perhaps, Garlemald. Pretty much the only things we know about Hingashi is that it's isolationist, and it would be hard to say that about a country that's under imperial rule, wouldn't it? Also, you mentioned in another post that the Domans tried to go to Hingashi and were turned away before they went to Eorzea (do we know that for certain, btw?). Would they seek haven in a state already ruled by Garleans, the people who just tried to wipe them out? I'm desperately trying to find any scraps of information on Hingashi that I can because I want to make a samurai character from that country, but the information I'm reading seems very conflicting.
  2. I'm not really familiar with the game on PS4, but I assume you have a keyboard for it? That will certainly be essential for RP. I do know a number of people who play (and RP) on the PS4 though, so it's definitely not all PC players. Welcome to the game, and to Balmung, and to RP! Please reach out if you have any questions or want to try your hand at some RP. Note that tumblr is another great way to engage with the RP community. A lot of Balmung RPers have IC/RP/or otherwise character-related blogs there. See you around!
  3. We're still here! Recruitment is still closed for now, but we're planning to open it back up in early April. Note also that we've added a new rule. We now have a minimum age requirement of 16 due to some dark themes in our RP.
  4. Welcome back! I hope to catch you for RP sometime.
  5. What server is it on: Balmung Housing Area: Mist Ward + Room Number: Ward 4, room 16 Owner's Name/Who to contact: Bastien Renardier (Main character: Solenne Lagarde) Title if it has one: La Noscean HQ of the White Fox (Information Brokerage) What the purpose is: Bast is primarily an investigator and buyer and seller of secrets, but he'll do other work too if the job sounds interesting to him.
  6. I guess it's time to start thinking up a reason for one of my characters to stay at an inn in Thanalan. Your character sounds lovely.
  7. We are closing recruitment for a while to get our new members settled and wrap up some long-term story arcs. If you're interested in joining, please check back here for updates.
  8. Your story, even down to the name of your Duke, actually reminds me of an actual existing npc and his story from the 1.0 version of the game. It gave me a good laugh the first time I read through this. Allow me to introduce to you, Ishgard's Duke Brett V: My personal pet theory is that the reclusive residence of The Hermit's Hovel in outer La Noscea is the selfsame "Duke" Brett V. No evidence of course, but I think it'd be a fantastic throwback if they ever did implement a quest for it. Most people miss it, but there's actually a subtle nod to our good Duke Brett in the 3.0 Hildibrand questline wherein our expressive investigator knocks over a priceless antique vase that reportedly once graced the house of an Ishgardian "Duke." ___________________________ A few things. Ishgard has(had) a more traditional version of nobility, but it was far from the only place which had nobles. Ul'dah, for example, has nobility by royal bloodlines and merchant empires who gain nobility through affluence. Gridania possesses a gentry, or psuedo nobility, but beyond the Padjal and exceptional individuals it's not immediately clear who this gentry includes. Limsa Lominsa has self-styled Pirate Kings, but no true nobility as the people firmly believe in personal freedoms and that no one person's blood runs redder than the rest. As for the beastmen languages, we do actually have solid evidence that at least three (Amalj'aa, Sahagin, Moogles) have their own written language, with lore which strongly suggests that the Ixal and Vanu also have their own written languages also. As for how Eorzeans view the beast tribes, that depends greatly on where they're from and which beast tribe. For example, Lominsans are friendly and accepting with most beastmen (Qiqirn, Goblins, Mamool Ja, and kobolds at one point) and are only bent towards war with the Sahagin. Ul'dah, on the other hand, has a sultanate decree banning all beastmen from the city-state. Whereas Gridania is somewhere between. They have amicable relations with the Sylphs and Goblins, but so much as treating a wounded Ixal is grounds for exile from the sylvan city-state. In any case, here's a few links that answer the above in greater detail: -Bellworks FC's Ishgardian Nobility and Title Lore Compilation -Lore Overview on Eorzean Nobility -Languages of Hydaelyn Lore Compilation Hope this helps! ^^ So basically everything I said in my post was wrong. Well, I guess that will teach me to weigh in on lore threads.
  9. "Duke of the Isles?" What isles are we talking about? There are various isles in or near Eorzea (Sharlayan is an island city-state, for example), but none that would be controlled by a duke. If you want to play an Ishgardian noble, your choices are vicount or baron. There are also counts in Ishgard, but only four of them, and we already know who they are. The higher real-world French ranks of marquis and duke don't exist in Ishgard, or anywhere else in Eorzea, seemingly. Note also that Ishgard is the only city-state we know of that has a true nobility. Gridania seems to have a class of important people who get their own little part of the city to live in (I refer to them as the gentry for lack of a better term), but the city is governed by the Seedseers. Ul'dah is a sultanate, but the wealthy and powerful people there are the monetarists. Limsa Lominsa is led by an Admiral, so the closest thing to a noble class there would be naval officers, I suspect. If you're playing a character from a made-up, faraway land on some other continent, then I suppose you could hold onto the duke and marquis titles, although some RPers might raise their eyebrows at you. I suggest you name his homeland something other than "the Isles" though, because again, what isles? And if your character is from a land far away from Eorzea, it doesn't make much sense that your character would know Eorzean beast tribe languages, especially if his appearance in Eorzea has been "rather sudden." Most Eorzeans don't even know beast tribe languages, because why would they? Beastmen are considered subhuman by most Eorzeans. And note also that we don't have any idea whether these tribes even have written languages. I would study up on the lore a little bit and ask some questions to flesh out your character, if I were you. I think you can make your general character concept work, but if you're going to RP in the gray areas of the lore, it's helpful to be very familiar with it first. Edit: I did some thinking after concluding this post, and it occurred to me from your character concept and the style in which you introduced it that you're going with an almost regency romance kind of vibe for your character. That can work, but it does have to be adapted to the game's lore. I did something similar with Solenne, who is a wealthy Gridanian aristocrat. She has many of the accomplishments and life experiences that a regency romance heroine would have, but she is also shaped by the fantasy-based environment of FFXIV.
  10. Hello! The Mythril Wings is nearly always on the lookout for serious RPers. We're a relatively small company, but we're very active. Lore is important to use and we try not to break it, but little bit of creative bending is okay. We nearly always have at least one story arc in progress, and we also encourage members to run their own character arcs, so there's usually a lot going on RP-wise. Please hit me up if you want more info! Our RPC FC Page Our Website
  11. We're still here and still recruiting! Please check out our website for more info.
  12. The history of ice cream predates the freezer by... well, a whole lot. It's said that Marco Polo actually brought over a recipe for something resembling sherbet to Italy from China. That recipe is thought to have evolved into ice cream sometime in the 16th Century. So it sounds like that person doesn't know their history at all and should be ignored. If it's plausible for a food item (or any item, really) to exist in Eorzea, I have no problem with people RPing it.
  13. There are some people who theorize that the second new job in the upcoming expansion will be blue mage, actually, so this idea might work even better than you think. But even if that doesn't turn out to be the case (and I'm pretty sure we're going to find out for certain during the EU Fan Fest in February), I still wouldn't consider it lore-breaking to play a character who learns new magical skills via observation like a blue mage. If your mage character is particularly clever and willing to get hit with some unpleasant magic in the name of science, I see no reason why they couldn't pull it off.
  14. I haven't updated Sol's wiki in months... and months, and months. When I find the time, I plan to scrap most of it and start over with just basic information that won't require a lot of updates (and will discourage metagaming). Writing out her backstory for all to read was helpful at first. Without a pre-established network of RP contacts, her wiki bio acted as a useful RP hook. But now so much has happened to her, and she has changed so much, that her pre-RP past is less relevant to the storylines she's currently involved in. And the idea of updating her bio with every event that happens in RP? Ha. No. There's no way I could keep up with that.
  15. Happy Starlight everyone! We've updated our leadership section, so check it out and let us know if you have any questions.
  16. Nah, you're not out of place. I know a lot of people who agree. I do, for one.
  17. I don't think they look sickly at all. I love the cool-toned color palette. I love it for Duskwights too. I think the clans should have some traits that distinguish them. There's always the option of rolling Seeker if you want a cat with a tan.
  18. Yeah, playing a traditional vampire in FFXIV would be very lorebreaking. Playing an aether vampire, on the other hand, is merely lorebending, and a lot more RPers are willing to go along with that. What I mean by "aether vampire" is a character with a voidsent-like ability to steal aether from other living beings. I play a character with this ability, and I have a friend who took the concept farther and plays a character who, due to reasons that are long and involved, can't regenerate aether anymore and has no choice but to feed on other people's aether to survive. Queue plenty of vampiric angst. "Aether vampire," by the way, is a purely OOC term. Since there are no vampires in Eorzea (as far as we're aware), it wouldn't make sense to use that term ICly. As for the rest, I'm always very leery of people who are looking for an RP partner (especially one of the opposite gender) to embark on a long-term and exclusive RP plot with them. You're asking someone to become isolated from other RPers and devote themselves primarily, or even solely, to your story. That's a lot to ask, and it could even open the door to abuse. My advice to you would be to create your character, try to make sure they're reasonably lore-abiding, and try to build up a network of RP-partners. You might find what you're looking for that way, and you'll have an opportunity to build some trust before you ask a potential RP partner to invest large amounts of time in your plot.
  19. We're still here and still RPing almost daily! We just concluded a major plot arc, and now our characters are taking a well-deserved vacation. We have recently gained several new members, and so we are temporarily closing recruitment while we get to know them and make sure they feel settled.
  20. I'm late posting for October, but we're still around, still having wild adventures, and still recruiting!
  21. I'll admit I don't quite get the appeal of playing an NPC, but clearly it's something many people enjoy. I definitely wouldn't want to mess up anyone's fun. I will not personally RP with people who play NPCs for a lot of the reasons other people have already outlined. I think the biggest of those reasons is the automatic power imbalance it creates between my character and the NPC. I have worked hard to develop each of my characters. Some of them are respected by other characters, and that's because they've had a chance to earn that respect through the months I've been playing them. But anyone can create an Aymeric, Haurchefant, etc. and automatically command the respect of the world (theoretically). I'm not okay with that. It doesn't seem fair. Because of this, I also won't go to public events where I might be forced into acknowledging or even RPing with NPC players. Again, I don't want to spoil anyone's fun. But I also want to be able to have fun myself, so I avoid NPC players (and politely ask them not to engage in RP with my characters if we're thrown together by chance).
  22. Thank you so much for doing this! Your art is lovely! Here is my broody Duskwight, Michaux:
  23. Thank you so much Sounsyy! All this seems to confirm the research I've been doing on the subject. The one remaining issue is that my character will definitely need to leave the Shroud, so I might need to think about that a bit more. (Or do a wee bit of handwaving and hope most RPers will forgive me.) It sounds like that's a bit of an unknown, since we don't have an example of this sort of thing happening after the Calamity. If you get an answer to that question at fanfest, I'd love to hear it!
