I was going to suggest Mateus as a server to play on with a friend who's said he's trying out the game since I've got alts there, but I tried to play around with a new character last night and found it greyed out. Does anyone know when or why they blocked off Mateus to new players? It seems like it was done at some point outside of maintenance, but I can't find anyone who knows exactly what happened or when it will be reopened. It doesn't even state whether or not it's a congested world, just that it's closed. Has Mateus already reached "close down forever" status like Balmung?

This is something I've been thinking about for awhile, mainly in regards to Yotsuyo's tragic upbringing. We know that in Eorzea, there's pretty much nothing standing in the way of gender equality. While I definitely see more of a classic "medieval"-style in Ishgard, most of Eorzea seems to have no issue with letting its women be in positions of power, soldiers, warriors, ect. There also seems to be more of a focus on social class than gender when it comes to positions one can hold in society. When we get to the Far East, we learn that Yotsuyo was kept as a slave by her step-parents and stepbrother pretty much her entire life. Then presumably when she was barely past whatever the age of consent is over there, she's married off to an abusive drunk and then later sold to a brothel. I'm wondering if there's a culture difference in regards to how women are viewed. From what I've seen, everything appears to be reminiscent of real-world Asia - predominantly male-dominated. At the same time, I don't remember reading or meeting any NPCs that explicitly say "women aren't allowed to do X and Y". They seem to have no issue with the Scion ladies doing stuff, and everyone loves Yugiri. Hien's fine with women being on his force. Where I'm confused is why, when Yotsuyo was growing up/possibly in her twenties, she seemed to have no agency or any freedom to do as she wished. Is it common in this universe to sell young women to brothels whenever you want? If so, seems a little bit...archaic for this world, even in the Far East. I also find it strange that no one even objected to this girl's treatment, as if it were something natural. It all kind of sounds like a scenario you'd see in feudal Japan or early China, where women certainly weren't valued and those scenarios probably did happen frequently. I understand that Yotsuyu was more than likely cowed into being subordinate by her family, but what would have happened if she had run away? Would she be able to find employment elsewhere? Move to Eorzea? If the parents chased her in the interest of getting their moneymaker/slave back, would people just let them take her? I'm hoping this all makes sense. If I were going to play a Doman female character, I'd want to know a bit of backstory for the place and the culture differences as compared to Eorzea. I don't want to assume it's based off of one Asian culture or the other, but the information I have is a little confusing.

Yeah, I was having trouble finding a way to accurately describe it. You know how you're in a room with people, just kind of talking about stuff, and you can just kind of feel the mood slowly starting to change? That's kind of the way it was, except it was like I was the only one who didn't roll with the mood change and was kind of side-eyed, so to speak. In this case, the mood change rapidly moved towards suggestively sexual. This particular character was not interested in group intimacy with multiple women, essentially, but this was something that group apparently did on a regular basis, as I found out much, much later.

I'm with Faye on this, pretty much. Also, fair warning, what I'm about to say might offend someone, so heads up. My character is a straight female Au Ra. I don't have any issue with LBGT characters whatsoever - it's just that this particular character happens to like dudes. A lot of the time, during regular RP with a few previous guilds, I've felt very much like the odd one out when it came to the characters that were a part of those guilds. It's hard to explain, but while my character was never 100% directly propositioned, it felt "expected" in those guilds that my character be up for some random intimacy with the other ladies of the guild. The first time this happened, I didn't see it coming, and then my character reacted awkwardly about it, as expected. I think I unintentionally offended the members of that group in doing so, but I guess I needed to make it clearer that my character was heterosexual? The second time it happened, I was able to sort of extricate her from the situation as I realized what was coming. I don't know for sure if that offended people, though. There's nothing repulsive about any character with any sexual orientation. No. Really. IDGAF. My second character that I'm still fleshing out is bisexual. It's all good. The only time I have an issue is when it seems to be "expected" in certain situations. When there's exclusion, but not really exclusion. Kind of like everyone's just having a good time, and then, "Oh....that character is heterosexual". Someone kick me if that ramble didn't make sense/was offensive. Because I SERIOUSLY don't mean it to be.

Depends on who it is. If it's some random person, you're probably going to get pinned against a wall. If it's someone she's close to. she'll probably look embarrassed. If it's someone she's in a relationship with/has a thing for, she'll act sort of stoically pleased about it, but will secretly be feeling the warm fuzzies.

Why does it have to be so &^$%$ difficult to buy a house?
Drej replied to Ceoile Stendan's topic in FFXIV Discussion
This is why I'm honestly happier with an apartment than I am having a house. Do I wish the apartments had just a bit more space to compensate for the lack of upper floors? Yes. Do I wish that they had the same Free Company amenities as houses do so we don't have to rely on houses? God, yes. I had a house at one point on Balmung that was actually given to me by a player who was leaving the game. I've since given it to another friend who's now using it as their FC house, simply because I wanted to be able to take breaks from the game without worrying about the stupid timer demolishing the house because I felt like I needed to unsub for awhile. Now, having an apartment is almost better for me because the house was honestly too much space for me. I'm not one to really enjoy building out large sprawling mansions. Honestly, I see what Square is trying to do with housing, and I like it. An interactive neighborhood for everyone to live in. Problem is, that sort of thing is likely incredibly difficult to code. And if I recall, they've mentioned that there's a limit to how many wards they can realistically add. The situation still sucks though, especially on populated servers. -
Comedic relief in RP makes RP for me. It's just not enjoyable for me everything's super serious all the time. That said, the comedy does still need to stay lore friendly, but that's not hard to do. I actually had a supposedly "super serious" mission in my old FC where we were sneaking into the Castrum to rescue my character's siblings. One guy's solution to try and get over the wall was to grab his Miqo girlfriend's tail and swing her up over the wall. She splatted (but survived, albeit slightly injured). We died laughing over Discord.

discussion Community Opinions on RPing Hybrid Races?
Drej replied to infamousviolet's topic in RP Discussion
I've never had an issue with mixed-race characters, so long as it's a hybrid that's physically possible. Now, I'm not 100% sure exactly how mixed-race works in this universe - most accurate thing I've seen is that the child usually gets most of the mom's attributes. So, human mom + Au Ra dad might produce a mostly human child, to my understanding. And all of the races are....well, "human" enough to make reproduction viable between races (I'm thinking of Elder Scrolls where a human and an argonian would very much not be producing a baby). I think as long as you're not making your hybrid character an overpowered super snowflake or constantly having them angst about their half breed status (insecurities are fine, but don't overdo it), you're fine. -

Tanks doing huge pulls in expert. But then forcing DPS to mostly just use their single target rotations on trash pulls because that's all some of us can realistically do when the tank keeps dragging the mobs out of our f*king Doton. -
How is my name not Lore Abiding? I'm tired of being told it isn't.
Drej replied to Mother's topic in Character Workshop
Whoever you were talking to has a weird nitpick problem. I'm a lore snob across all of my games/universes and I think yours is just fine. She's supposed to be a Raen, yes? Then you're fine. I did do a quick google out of curiosity and found that the name seems to be actually from a JRPG character, but meh. Raen have Japanese names and you're not actually trying to BE that JRPG character (I also have no idea if you were even aware that character exists), so I'd say don't worry about this person and block them if they're determined to keep giving you crap for it. -

Um. What the hell was done this expansion to you poor SCH mains? Seems like just about every party's out for your blood. -
I took advantage of the AFK exploits. Not even going to sugarcoat it. It's either that or fall asleep waiting for 3-4 hours to log in only to immediately log out after an hour for bed. So I'm pretty worried now that I actually won't get to play much at all for the next month or so until SE gets their shite together. I really don't see this forced logout thing helping at all since everyone is just going to be spamming the login button and then AFKing for the rest of the evening during prime time. It isn't going to change a thing. Also, punishing the other servers for the mistakes the high pop servers are making. LOL. SE's method of dealing with server issues is to hack off the damaged limb with no anesthesia and put a Minion bandaid from the dollar store on the stump.

I'm not totally new to this, but when it comes to selling stuff on Balmung...I'm totally lost. I've noticed that the issue with Balmung is that you can post one thing for one price, but that someone 30 minutes later will have undercut you so badly that it just snowballs until your item's worth practically nothing. I've had several items sitting in my retainers for weeks now, and I really don't want to have to vendor them like I've been doing lately out of frustration because things seem to take at least six weeks to sell. There's a lot of stuff sitting in my inventory and in my retainers' inventories because of this. Do I just have to undercut along with the undercutters until somebody gets tired and finally buys my item? I'm a little weary of posting an item up at market value, then having to knock the price way down when I get home from work because an item worth $44,000 gil is now worth $30,000, and still declining.

Persistent fantasia usage is far more likely to weird people out than just another miqo'te. I'm not accusing you of anything, obviously it's fine if you wanted to mess around with the different races before settling on one you really wanted to play. Just something to keep in mind. Oh yeah, I'm definitely aware of how weird that can be. I wasn't actually in the roleplaying scene during the time of all the fantasia-ing, so I think the only confusing thing was temporarily having my Hyur running around with a Roe name until I got paid that week.

Haha, sounds like the FFXIV version of night elves and Goldshire. I guess I was just afraid people would start ribbing me for playing a class that tends to get the "overly sexualized furry" treatment, rather than an actually somewhat dignified character. Literally had a friend who plays go, "wtf you're wasting your fantasia on waifu trash?" No, I just happened to come up with a miqo'te that looks cool enough for me to want to race change. Definitely grateful for all of the responses thus far, though. Currently in the process of setting up her character profile and all that.
