Just to clear things up a bit, I have no problem with people roleplaying villains and the like as long as they have made the case clear that is what they are aiming to do. My issue is with people who think they're playing a hero while at the same time committing regular acts of evil against innocents. I've had to deal with that non-sense when playing Dungeons and Dragons before, and I don't want to have to deal with it again. It was almost like these guys thought that because their hero was able to walk into someone's house and loot it for hi-potions in some previous game they played on the DS or something that it is perfectly alright to do so in an actual role playing situation. :frustrated:

He made a choice for the greater good to do that. It was for a disguise if I recall. It comes down to the context of why they are doing it. A guy whose needs are already met, but decides to steal from a bystander anyway is just a villain. Being a thief isn't a good thing, and a person needs a very good explanation for why they are committing acts of theft, if nothing more than to show they aren't just a cold-blooded monster in the shape of a person. Yes, I know about the survival thing. However, thievery in and of itself is an undesireable act. The poor steal because they have no alternative, but that is only considered acceptable because of the particular situation, not because theft is morally ambiguous.

Normally I avoid posts that are critical of other people's play styles, but unless the person in question wants to role play a villainous lowlife he is better off not playing his character as a thief in the traditional sense. I've seen references to Locke in multiple places here by people who are RPing thief characters or organizations that aren't in the least bit like Locke. Locke was an agent, spy, and saboteur for the Returners (resistance movement in FFVI) and greatly disliked being called a thief because that simply wasn't what he was (outside fitting the description of the Final Fantasy class of the same name). He preferred the term treasure hunter since he used his skills to help return others' property that was taken by force (via the empire), undermine the effectiveness of enemy targets, or simply acting as a real treasure hunter. Locke was never the type to steal from innocent bystanders regardless of them being well off or not. It simply wasn't something he would ever agree to do. When you RP a character that is willing to target bystanders whom your character knows nothing about, then you're essentially saying your character sees others as targets to take advantage of, not people. He is completely untrustworthy as a character and is willing to commit vile criminal acts against innocents. Forgive me for saying, but anyone who finds that quality endearing has more than a few screws loose.

The following is the drop list for my plainsfolk lalafell, Velito Angelito.

Item Name Drop Chance

Gil 50 to 100 pieces 100%

Bundle of Love Letters 100%

Baseball sized Diamond 100%

Grapefruit Sized Ruby 100%

Full Waterskin Labelled "Kakajuju" 100%

Amid mostly useless bobbles and junk, you find the following: Bundle of Love Letters A bundle of letters that appear somewhat weathered from being kept a long time. It includes a love letter addressed to a "Princess Nanamo Ul Namo", a more recent letter composed to Momodi at the Ul'dah Adventurer's guild, another to a Kikipu, and the rest are to individuals whose names are unfamiliar. A common pattern among love letters addressed to non-lalafell is that if he were larger, he would carry them into the sunset, but alas, he will settle for hugs instead. Strawberry Sized Diamond This tremendously huge gem must be worth a small fortune. A slip of paper from the same box reads "To my future wife and betrothed." On the back of that same slip, it reads "What's useless to a goblin..." Orange Sized Ruby If the last one was worth a fortune, then this must be enough to buy a small kingdom! A paper slip in the same box reads "This thing is totally cursed. Do not try to pick it up or sell it without express permission of Velito Angelito. I'm definitely not lying. I would never think of writing a letter to purposely lie for the protection of my property. Yep, I'm a totally honest lalafell." Full Waterskin labeled Kakajuju You're not sure what the stuff is, but an inscription on the waterskin reads "It kills cowardice... and most everything else. Wards against tempering to boot!"

Instead of reposting my stuff here, I'll just include a link to my photo album at FFXIV Realms. http://ffxivrealm.com/screenshots/best-of-meines-beta-screenshots.94/view

Question about an OOC Free Company and IC LSes
Momoji Momochi replied to synaesthetic's topic in RP Discussion
I view RP as something I'd do occasionally, since most of the activities in the game are not very conducive to RPing. Having the entire free company be an RP zone would put a tremendous amount of extra pressure on players doing content that is hard enough as is. People who RP very regularly might be able to pull it off, but most RPers have to stop and think about what they're character would say or do, and that takes quite a bit of effort on the part of those involved. To be honest, I wouldn't want to be in an RP free company unless the RP is a planned event. Otherwise it will turn RPing from being fun into a form of work. -
Will you be using Naming Conventions?
Momoji Momochi replied to Tranquil Dawn's topic in RP Discussion
To be honest, the naming conventions presented for the game so far are not complete. That is, they were made to satisfy the need to name NPCs and not player characters. For instance, giving a character a surname based on a personal accomplishment like with highland hyur is perfectly fine for characters that you meet briefly, but over the course of a character's life, that title may change several times. In addition to which, Raubahn Aldynn's last name certainly doesn't fit the presented naming conventions for highland hyur, so even SE isn't following the naming conventions they set up like a hard ruleset. Similarly, a naming convention based on rhythm and rhyme is fine, but the standards presented for lalafell are very limited because they only intended to use the lalafell names to create cute, humorous, or otherwise funny sounding characters. Amida Amori would be a perfectly fine name for a plainsfolk lalafell and it is clearly outside the presented naming conventions. My advise is to use the naming conventions to get the general idea surrounding the race's naming conventions, but don't rely on them as a hard set of rules. I'd know, I spent many hours playing with the naming standards for lalafell and highland hyur, and I rarely find a name that I would stick with. It is not until I start changing things up a bit that I get a name that I would stick with for the long run. -
Being a complete MMO junky, I will recreate my closed beta character, a female character I've been wanting to try out, and a lalafell. I'll be using my previous three 1.0 characters to do this, since none of them are higher than level 10 on their selected classes. I've always had a penchant for working on multiple characters, but hopefully I will settle down with just one after the first week of open beta. In all likelihood, my first day will be me rushing to level 20 on my pugilist, Heinrich. Accompanying me on this insane quest will be my twin brother, who is also playing Final Fantasy XIV. Given he is really into keeping himself healthy though, he probably won't take the day completely off, so I'll get ahead of him somewhat. Alternatively, I might choose to level a female highland hyur archer or male lalafell thaumaturge. I liked both of those classes, particularly the archer. I really liked how the female highland hyur I made during closed beta looked when it came to playing that class. At least to me she looked better aesthetically in the equipment than Heinrich did.

I double checked and it looks like I'm following the naming conventions save that the title my character has is in German. Foust means Fist in German, and it also happens to be a surname. It came from a nickname for people who were pugilistic long ago. That works out fine for me since I'm going for pugilist. -
Your list reminds me of what my DnD characters carry around. Then you saw right through me. I'm was a big DnD player back in highschool and remain a fan of the brand name. I picked up all the basic 4th edition books even though I didn't particularly like that incarnation of the game. So I learned to have my fantasy characters pack stuff like my DnD characters.

Heinrich carries the following things with him in his backpack: 1) A small jug of sting brew. The stuff is useful for getting rid of large insectoid pests before setting up camp or logging, and for drinking. 2) A full water skin. 3) Bandages. 4) Gysahl Greens. He chews the stuff. If it is good for a chocobo, it must be good for me. 5) Some jerky and trail rations. 6) A large survival knife. 7) A hatchet. 8) Needle and thread. 9) Flint and steel. 10) 50 feet of silk rope. 11) A bar of soap. Since he typically ventures into the wilderness to log, he doesn't have any gil on him. If travelling, he keeps a small bag of gil stashed in the darkest depths of his pack along with one change of clothes. He would also include a bedroll and blanket.

I have always put my male highland hyur around 70%. Now after looking at this graph, I'm thinking, maybe I didn't make my character tall enough?

I sort of follow the naming conventions when it comes to highland hyur. I, however, prefer a legitimate surname rather than being called something like "Fireaxe." Quick Edit: Although, technically the surname "Foust" perfectly fits the naming convention for highland hyur. -
Anyone who is having trouble trying to figure out what outfit they're going to use for RP, I completely sympathize with you. I've found that some of the crafting and gathering gear doubles as a decent set of casual wear when mixed with other items found in game like eye patches and glasses.

Well, my characters aren't legacy characters per say, but they bear the mark. One of my characters fell overboard on a maritime vessel when the calamity happened. He thought he was going to either drawn due to the turbulent weather or be eaten by a sea serpent, but instead a light engulfed him and he awoke stranded on a deserted island on the eastern side of Eorzea. He spent two years stranded there dealing with a crystal problem and a ghost train. The ghost train was due to carry the victims of the calamity comfortably to Thal's realm, but was being prevented from doing so due to an aberrant crystal on the island. After resolving the issue at great risk to himself, the ghost train's conductor agreed to take him to Ul'dah, which would be fine since he had to make a stop there. In the end though, Waldron did not want to leave his dead friends and crewmates, who threw him from the ghost train at Ul'dah to save his life. Waldron then spent the next three years delivering the letters from the deceased to their family, friends, and loved ones. I don't have any explanation for why my other character has the mark as of yet. Hopefully I can come up with something interesting in order to fill in the time gap between the calamity and the present, since they weren't warped. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Quick edit: I'm probably going to go with a ghost ship as opposed to a ghost train for the final draft of my character's story and a less negative ending to it. Probably will just have them all celebrating their victory on the ghost ship during the voyage, then Waldron wakes up alone at the docks with a letter from his captain and crew. Also, on part of people remembering things or not, I'm under the general impression that if you bear the mark you will remember the world as it really was regardless of being time warped or not.

Well, I can't post anything related to lancer equipment, but I do have an image of the twin adder caster stuff. Here is a picture of my character with all the stuff on. Copyright 2010-2013 Square Enix Co. LTD all rights reserved Final Fantasy XIV

I don't speak for anyone but myself, but I'll be on Balmung. Since the original warriors of light are supposed to be part of the story, it would feel a bit odd if they weren't around.

Well, I originally voted as undecided, but then I came up with an interesting character named Manfred/Alfred Quillarts (haven't decided on whether to go with Manfried or Alfred) who happens to be a male highland hyur. Since my old characters were all thaumaturges, I decided to go with a scholarly background and choose the surname/title accordingly. It took quite a bit of time to arrive at Quillarts, as I was first going with Blackfeather, Whitefeather, or featherlight based on his scholarly tool, the quill. Personally, Manfred Blackfeather sounds pretty cool (A quill heavily saturated with ink = Blackfeather). I guess I could also go with Blackquill... and now my brain is running through names again. Edit: I'm finding that the more succinct names are holding greater appeal to me, so I'm just going to stick with Ranolf Weise. If I name my character something crazy, I've got the feeling I'll start regretting it later down the road.

It's so hard to choose. I could go highland hyur, but I also have some old low level transfers from ffxiv 1.0. One of those is Suemyr Moonshadow, my thm moon kitty, who I still have the citizen slip for. My first ffxi character was a Galka monk, so I might go hellsguard.

What would you do if you got stuck in Final Fantasy?
Momoji Momochi replied to Vashies Rosada's topic in RP Discussion
Well, I'd probably begin work as a merchant or librarian given my extensive education background. However, my off-world knowledge makes me a god among men there, and I could easily dissect a magitech walker and begin the process of building my own production facility, creating cheap, disposable weapons useable by infantry to take out any of the magitech weapons they have demonstrated in game. Hidden land mines containing combustive materials mixed with a fire spell, lightning powered tesla rifles, long distance missiles propelled by areo, etc. I ask you, what is a gigantic armored blimp to half a dozen armor piercing magitech missiles? Well, better get started... :geek: Gwahahaha! The thing is, I do have skills that don't exist in game.: Calculus, physics, basic chemistry, and an otherwise strong science background. That will change how I as a character interact with the world. I simply could never be encapsulated as a mere thaumaturge. While they fight an open war, I'd be beating back the Empire with trenches, mobile black powder cannons, and greek fire. Hydaelyn's magic mixed with even basic physics and chemistry is a lethal combination. Certainly I'd need time to adapt, but dropping a highly educated person from our world into their's is essentially dropping a god into their world. -
Besides unequal distribution between the sexes, there is no inequality between the sexes in seeker culture. Being a nuhn is a duty, honor, and privilege to their race, not a mark of kingship. The trial by combat method of choosing Nahn probably adds to this confusion, considering it doesn't make much sense to begin with. A battle between sentient beings has no guarantee of determining prime breeding stock considering that a weaker person may just be more ruthless and cunning than the healthier male, which is an acquired personality trait and not related to bloodline. It is entirely possible that if a Nahn got too full of himself, the women may choose to breed with a Tia instead, since they are under no compulsion to breed with the Nahn if he treats them as possessions. I'd even go so far to say that a well intentioned Tia would easily win out over a Nahn in terms of getting female affection.

My preference has been the highland hyur for a combination of reasons that I still find difficult to explain. They project a strength of character and seriousness that seems appropriate in the context of what has happened to Eorzea. Their homeland has been taken over recently, which gives a good reason why any number of highland hyur would be seeking their fortunes elsewhere, either to turn a new leaf or to prepare for the eventual reconquest of their lost homeland of Gyr Abania. I feel those are the reasons that draw me the most to the race, although there is also the fact that miqo'te seem to dominate the servers, so I feel compelled to play something different. Plus, they are a proud race with a strong sense of honor. They had everything and then lost it all. There is a struggle to find meaning in their lives and to regain the respect that they had lost.

For anyone who is interested, I have a post in a lore thread over in the RP section talking about Gridania. Unfortunately, the name of the thread eludes me at the moment. Quick Edit: The thread is called Observational Question(s) in the RP section.

I think it would be better to say how they are different, because some things that appear the same are merely superficial. First, the similarities between the FFXI and FFXIV races only runs skin deep. There is no doubt that the appearance of the FFXIV races are a different stylistic take on those from FFXI. Other than that, their cultures are completely different (except for hume, who don't really have a definitive culture). The city states in FFXIV vary in terms of the level at which they mimic the original big three of FFXI. The only comparison that can be made legitimately between Limsa Lominsa and Bastok is that they are both port cities, and that Galka/Roegadyn call the city home. However, racial tensions are almost non-existent in Limsa Lominsa, instead replaced by tension between the navy and pirates. Gridania really doesn't resemble Windurst or San d'Oria. The city has no racial identity nor a strong central authority. The padjal listen to the elementals of the woods, which in my opinion is far less impressive than how the Star Sybil listens to the heavens for guidance. However, the Padjal seem more interested in maintaining a balance in nature between the Gridanians and the forest spirits than actually leading the Gridanians to greatness like the Star Sybil did for the tarutaru. Its like they took the shire from Lord of the Rings, changed it from being built on open plains to a forest, and then added a good does of asian animism into the mix. Ul'dah has a strong central authority like San d'Oria, but it's run by lalafell, is Persian inspired, and is built in a desert. So not really all that similar to San d'Oria. It's the capital of the Dunesfolk, but the city feels about as multiracial as Gridania. The excuse for all the races being around is that they opened their doors to other races since it was good for trade. The whole Lalafell running the show thing kind of gets deluded a bit as a result. Perhaps its similar to a city in the Aut'Urghan expansion, but I never played that part of FFXI, so I wouldn't know. I've got to hit the sack, so I'll leave it at that for now.
