You don't even need to label yourself as a villain. My character could more or less fit into the 'good guy' archetype, except he's got such hatred for Ishgardians due to past events that he'd gladly see every one of them dead and their cities burnt to the ground (and he may or may not be plotting some domestic terrorism towards those ends). That said, only one person knows about his feelings towards Ishgard and everyone else he's encountered would be hard pressed to think of him as anything more than a somewhat abrasive know-it-all. To the outside world he's no different from any other adventurer, even though behind the scenes he may be working towards more nefarious ends. And even then the act would be completely justified in his (possibly damaged) mind, so he doesn't see himself as a villain at all.

Dunno why so many people have to make their character into something super unique or unlikely in the first place. A good RPer should be able to work within "the norm" for whatever world they're in without needing to use gray areas that could potentially end up making their characters non-canon. You should make your character unique by what they go through in-character and how they develop from it, not by giving yourself the most special snowflake backstory you can imagine. My character will call out anyone claiming to be from a "far off land" who can't go into explicit detail about their homeland because it may or may not exist just because they couldn't fit their character into the confines of the established lore.

The official lore says pure-blooded Garleans generally can't use magic and any mages you see are conscripts or from conquered territories. However, magic using pure-blooded or half-blooded Garleans aren't impossible, just very VERY rare. So even if it's possible, don't try to be a special snowflake and do it anyway.

I would honestly think twice before making a detailed character from Othard or the Far East because of how little information we have. If some lore drops that contradicts something you've made up yourself it can lead to complications.

Knowing Ishgard reveals were all but a sure thing in the coming patches I purposely held back on pushing my characters current storyline/whatever you wanna call it. I always find it funny when people run away with stuff the game gives little to no information on with their characters and then either have to backpedal to the point of losing weeks/months of RP or keep RPing a then non-canon thing despite it. I'm waiting for more information on Othard/Doma/the Far East to come out down the road to show how silly it is for all of these people with japanese-y names to be running around claiming to be from there.

Keep in mind Soken seems to keep many of the music files for previous games he's worked on in that directory, an example being SK4 likely having to do with his work on Seiken Densetsu 4. Samurai could just as easily be a folder with his work from Musashi: Samurai Legend.

It's still pretty awful.

I had planned to turn a house into a public library, but the costs and availability kind of dashed those hopes for the time being.

Won't lie, the night of the patch I stayed up late with the girlfriend so we could grab what we assumed would be reasonably priced houses next door to one another. When the information rolled out she was disappointed and I was downright angry. I'm over it now, though, because at least now I can spend the couple million I'd been saving up knowinf full well I'll never be able to afford one of these 'personal' houses unless changes are made. =P

Yehn'za is one of the few literate people in his company and would love to meet more intellectuals. He has a small library in the Clandestine guild house with all of the books he's collected or written over the years with his specialty being the ecology of Eorzea following the calamity and Eorzean history.

I only skimmed over that, but please don't do the Padjal thing. You'll get a lot of ridicule. They're supposed to be super rare if we were meant to play as one SE would let us.

Dunno how it taking longer to master swinging a pickaxe than advanced mathematical spellcasting makes much sense, honestly.

I think the player needs to know when to limit themselves for the sake of being realistic. I personally RP my guy primarily as an ecologist/author who just happens to have knowledge of thaumaturgy and just enough of an idea how arcanism works to heal scrapes and bruises. I have a bunch of classes at 50, but other than the ones mentioned I ignore them.

Seems like every MMO has "the worst" support anyone has ever seen. =P They all feel the same to me, with The Old Republic standing out after they opened that one call center in Scottland, those people were awesome.

I'm in dire need of a new headset myself. I've been using a cheap Chinese one for the last 4+ years that I got online for like 10 dollars. It works, but man is it poorly made.

The Garlean Empire is a well oiled machine, so it stands to reason that those of us choosing to RP as spies or sympathizers should be organized as well. We'd be able to coordinate our subversive efforts all the more effectively if we had a linkshell to talk in, or even just knew another agent on sight! So, that said, if you're interested in forming a more cohesive imperial spy network drop me a PM with your character name and I'll have one of our people shoot you an LS invite at some point. If when you look at them all you see are the negative sides, that they're hookers and loose and fanservice only, chances are you had some of those ideas in your mind before you even signed in.

Thanks guys. I'll wander off and do something else while I occasionally refresh. Rather than make a new topic though, I had another question: How ridiculous is the catperson overpopulation? A friend is sort of pushing me towards making one, but I hate to be "part of the problem".

Just wondering if I'm wasting my time sitting at this server select screen, or if I should stick it out and hope it'll open up as it gets later on in the night.

I just wish there was a simple answer to "which server has more/more active roleplayers". I ended up going to Exodus with some friends but I'm already noticing them losing interest in the game so I figured I would at least make alts (possible future mains) on an RP server, but now I'm worried I'll pick the "wrong" one. >>

Can one of you do me a favor and let me know if I'd be able to run this on my PC? I have a PS3, but I'm vastly more comfortable playing MMO's on my PC and it'd save me 30 dollars or so on pS3 peripherals. AMD Athlon 54 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 4GB of RAM GeForce 9400 GT I don't expect it to dazzle me with it's graphics as I know my video card is "old" (by PC standards), medium-low settings would be good enough for me.
