What games are you playing/looking forward to?
Ildur replied to Orlog's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I finished Rogue Legacy. And by 'finished' I mean I reached New Game++ and then never touched the game again. It got very annoying very fast: bullet hells don't work when you don't have a lot of freedom of movement. So I'm currently replaying Kingdoms of Amalur. It's like an off-line MMO but with good combat! Even the story is kind of clichetastic. Also waiting on Saints Row 4 and hoping it will be less offensive and stupid than the last one. -
The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?
Ildur replied to hypatiala's topic in FFXIV Discussion
ARR's combat has nothing to do with age and all to do with latency: the tab-targetting system they are using is less vulnerable to ping issues, unlike an action-y one like TERA. I remember TERA was completely unplayable if my latency went up 300+ which is, incidentally, the point where all First Person Shooters also become unplayable, unenjoyable or, at the very least, annoying to play (because you react, literally, a third of a second too late no matter what). They still placed those charged attacks to mobs that you have to 'dodge' by calmly running out of range or around the mob, though, so it's like they were trying to throw a biscuit to the action-combat crowd anyway. -
Ulanan smells like olives. Because she carries a jar of them everywhere.

For Ildur, it would be an orange skin. For Ulanan, it would be a rope. Don't think too hard on them, I certainly didn't.

The background sounds nice enough. Even the justification for the last name is sound: his foster father was trying to raise him as he would his own son. It is a simle solution, but the simplest solutions are sometimes the best. I do not think there's any poems referencing the Primals, though once the game launches we might find some buried deep withing quests. If you absolutely feel like you must have a poem handy, you should probably write your own or, if you are not confident enough about your poetic skill, write down what the poem talks about on, say, each paragraph. Then you can just /emote it whenever it comes up. If you do write one, make sure you don't imply via RP or backstory that it's a very important poem. That might bring trouble when talking to other fellow bards who will react with 'Uh, I have never heard about it! You sure it's a famous one?'. Here's the wiki page on Primals. On the topic of roleplay: there's nothing saying you can't pre-plan the outcomes on interactions, but I think most roleplayers want scenes* to start and end organically, without any plan (or maybe just a general guideline of what the prefered outcome is). Most often than not, people won't plan scenes out: they will just roleplay and see where things end naturally from there. The only plans you will see constantly are of the 'let's have X and Y characters meet at Z'. Everything from that point up isn't planned, most of the time. * a scene is not necesarily a pre-planned thing: we call 'scene' to a series of interactions between characters sharing the same space-time. For example: if Jezvin and Ildur meet by chance in the road and talk about the weather briefly, fight a rampaging eft that was close by, joke about it and leave together towards Gridania before they part ways, that's all a whole scene. For clarification, 'cause some people have wondered in the past if 'roleplaying a scene' meant having it scripted down.

They kind of had to do that with all headhear for Miqo'te, so that their ears wouldn't simply vanish, though. I remember one of the helmets even having special holes in the 'socks'. This makes me think that Miqo'te headwear might not be a morph but an unique mesh. I'd like to believe Squeenix is a large enough company to say "A new race? It requires unique meshes? Sure thing!" instead of "A new race? It requires unique meshes? Whomever designed this race, you are FIRED. Now let's make another sexy animal girl race."

I'm okay with that calling them gnomes as long as they are really dwarves! I want the aesthetics, not the whole cultural, ussually Tolkienesque package. Big beards braided into complext patterns. Short legs, but powerful and stout bodies. I'm a slave to my aesthetic sense.
-
If they wanted Viera in the game, they probably should have made them a Miqo'te subspecies. And then add a fox subspecies to have all the basic options of the animal-girl catalog. I still vouch for dwarves. Or DRAGON dwarves!
-
I'm kind of happy with what we have. How odd. Musketeers will likely be a thing, but I do like the idea of having another, not purely magical ranged class. I'd also like a two-handed sword class and a mace user. They might step a bit on the roles of Gladiators and Marauders, though.
-
Bunny girls or cat girls. Decisions, decisions... I'll pick Miqo'te because we already have them. With that said, however, if Squeenix adds any race I hope they are dwarves. Because every game should have dwarves with awesomely large and complex beards. Not that I expect them to do that...but I can dream!

A new Dev Blog about the Unicorn Mount is up
Ildur replied to sanguineFenrir's topic in FFXIV Discussion
What I'm disliking about the unicorn is that some races females sit side-saddle. It looks nice and all, but it doesn't make much practical sense. Just a small complain. Because I like to complain! -
It's really up to you, Crimson. It can be useful if you need to remind yourself of those little details you keep forgetting. If you do keep forgetting them, I mean.

I'm going to leave a small acknowledgment that my opinions on the backstory mirrors what FreelanceWizard said. Yay for others thinking and writting for me! B obviously looks better, but that has little to do with the hair and all to do with the emote. I think you should have provided screens of the three alternatives during the same animation. Otherwise, option B ends up despicting a much more interesting personality than the other two. With that said, I'll go with hair A.

Officialy, Ala Mhigo was conquered by the garleans 20 years ago. It is stated that Ala Mhigan children are sent off the city for military training and heavily brainwashed to serve the Empire. This would mean that Sofine wouldn't have spent much time with her parents at all. You can solve this in a couple of ways. The first one is making her older for about 12 years (so that she is outside of 'adoctrination' age). The second is to move them to the garlean mainland (I forgot the name), but lore about how life is there is bare-boned. Not that it matters much, though. Just use some generalizations and avoid talking about everyday life or how tidy/untidy the cities were. You should also have an answer of why she and her parents were accused (and found guilty) of treason. It doesn't have to be anything complicated. Maybe her parent refused or failed to comply some higher up order, or maybe an overzealous officer was angry at her for not responding his romantic advancements and took revenge by planting evidence and whatnot. I would also change being exiled to 'escaped execution' or 'escaped during her parents execution'. The reason for this is that most military cultures threat treason as a very, very big deal punished by death. It makes sense in the case of the garleans, too, because they wouldn't want their soldiers to spill details about how their military, training or technology works.

Just leaving this here because, knowing the internet, someone is going to raise fingers and call Naunet a liar or something: Yes, I'm in Unity. I disagreed with my fellow companions and we are all quite fine with it. At least until we initiate the Blood Games of Blood where we will duke it out to know who is right...! Wait, what do you mean that's not how arguments should work...? Companies have a goal to make money, indeed, but they don't have a right to make it. This mentality leads to companies using shady business models and to not respect their customers. It also leads to customers being indulgent against company bullcrap and being unable to demand for improvement.

Not necesarily. They would give a representation of the actual settlements, unless the settlements theirselves are just a representation of a bunch of other settlements. It depends on how you interpret it. Just as an anecdote: in Fallout 2 there was the 'New California Republic', which was supposed to be large country with thousands of citizens. In-game, however, it was represented by a town divided in three sections. In-universe, it was stated that cars were somewhat commonplace. However, in-game, the PC was the only despicted owner of a car. So, in a way, the 'car driver population' was only represented by the PC. It's very likely (and preferable, I'd say) to consider that many, many more towns and locations exist in Eorzea but are not reacheable for gameplay or mechanical reasons. That gives us roleplayers more options at the time of making backstories. The only 'requeriment' is that those places should not be relevant or critical to the game's plot.

At least midlander males have eyebrows, contrary to highlanders.

Back in 1.0, you could see garlean mooks of various races, so I wouldn't worry about his race at all. I think one of their high ranking officers, the leader of a whole Legion, was actually an elezen, so you are good on it. It is implied, though, that garleans might have a predominant Hyur population (because garlean Hyur mooks are more plentiful than mooks of other races).

That is true. Ignoring and blocking the trolls has always worked fine for me, so of course I do not fully see the necessity to make alternatives. I do understand that, if ignoring doesn't work, then alternatives must be brought up. But another problem I have with the two methods (the third, reporting, is perfectly fine) is that they require the roleplayer to disrupt his own roleplay, either by dropping character or by moving to a new location. The moving to a new location is actually something I could get behind in some circumstances, like being trolled constantly by a lot of different people (probably caused by roleplaying in a high-traffic area). So I guess I don't really have much of a problem with that one if the circumstances are right. But then there's the first one, dropping out of character to acknowledge the trolling. I still think this will encourage the troll to linger longer than he would if you simply ignored him. This wouldn't be a problem, ussually, but acknowledging their trolling constantly until they decide to leave is going to strain and disrupt your current scene. Of course, as you have said, our experiences kind of contradict each other. It's kind of hard to form a 'unified theory' when that happens.

I pick the Hyur, even though I don't like that particular hairstyle. The Miqo'te is very...monochromatic.

That's much better. Allow me to give you this brownie of approval! I will point you out to the very useful 100 questions thread here. Do not feel like you must answer any or all of them; it's hardly needed and they are a lot of questions. I'm just linking it here because many of them will make you think about things you probably wouldn't ponder about otherwise. Just don't try to answer them all on one day; take your time to ponder about the answers. You could also skip questions if you think they don't add any depth to your character. It's a good thought exercise, even if you chose not to answer them at all. About ex-garleans: it depends on how you justify their background. If you are going for a deserter, you'll want to consider that garlean military training is very harsh and designed to make zealots for the empire. You might want to go for a civilian instead, since, while they are likely subject to imperial propaganda anyway, it would be on a lesser degree. It's different if you go for a garlean spy: someone who has lived in Eorzean society for a long time might be able to get past the imperial preconceptions (thanks to personal experiences and the lack of ideological propaganda) and decide that the Empire is actually a bad thing.
-
The Calamity is a good excuse for explaining why Maleqo'tes are suddenly more common: the devastation of the land forced them to integrate into Eorzean society to rebuild. Alternatively, tribes might have been obliterated thanks to death rates increasing (because of giant balls of fire), forcing members to move to other locations, or whole tribes and communities disbanding due to low numbers. They were always there, they just didn't have any kind of 'plot relevance', so to speak. Unless they are retconned PCs from 1.0. Of course, Squeenix might present us with the 'official' explanation eventually but, until then, I'd explain it with the ones above.
-
Pft! It's just because you made an anime pretty boy! *shakes walking stick dismissively* I still think the Miqo'te has more personality. It's the beard, I tell you. Sure, Miqo'te may be overpopulated these days, but you can't argue with the appeal of BEARDS.

I've been RPing in TERA for like a year now, and all the griefers I have run into lost interest and left after a minute of me not acknowledging them. Even after it went F2P. I do not think your solutions to trolling in chapter 3 will do anything more than disrupt the roleplay. I'm not disagreeing with what is told on the other chapters, mind. I particularly agree with 'don't roleplay in an instance/party unless everyone agrees to'. It's just with the solutions with trolling that I have problems with.

I'm sure he's an adorable mini-ridick. You shouldn't resist the Lalaification! You could make all the young women go 'dawwww!' just by entering a room! And you could be named something awesome like Ashren Snowen, or Ashashren Snosnoren. Okay, maybe not that last one.
