  1. Old FF games had shitton of Star Wars references > FFXIV is all about old FF references > Everyone hates SW prequels > SW prequel were all about politicians talking about stuff > If HW narrative had focused on taking apart millenia old rotten theocracy with power of politics in uphill battle, it could have been SW prequels tier fun ride at worst. Beware what you wish for! Silly, melodramatic, at core more optimistic than not and at times bit dark power fantasies ftw. Heavensward was Dragons out of 10. "Become humanoid dragon, with Dragoon job, to kill dragons, to ride dragons!" (Sorry for maximum sillyness...)
  2. Own this idea! It sounds fun! So what someone disagrees with drawing from more comical side of canon. Those who will take chance have new, exiting rp experience ahead of them which tbh is refreshing and memorable!
  3. Making "was adopted by hyurs" as your character's backstory just because of her name is... kinda meh? I mean, it works, but it's not all that original option, but it does work, but it's damn unoriginal. Haha, loop is endless. (Also I guess Krile has mentioned it's not her real name? So, I suppose you can find not traditional names from Sharyalan. I really cannot think of any other canon examples.) Even in real life there are people with names which are not traditional. Even in real life some people choose their name, and change it. If leaving your character's background simple and clean is what you are looking for, do what you must. Gotta admit, sometimes the simple answer is the right one.
  4. Decision to shoehorn toon's class into it's roleplaying persona is the one I think everyone should this twice and hard. I hate to sound this blunt but I also hate to see people have hard time putting together satisfying rp persona for their FFXIV character, just because these classes and especially jobs have some heavy lore behind them: lore which is fine in context of msq, you being WoL and all, but delete that WoL part and it really changes game. The character I have roleplayed most with is not even lvl 60 yet (I am incredibly lazy grinder, and I put most effort to direction where it makes difference, in raiding and on my raiding characters). The job I'm doing my in-game toiling with him is Dark Knight but, his roleplaying persona has diddly squat to do with actual dark knights at Ishgard. He is as much DRK as Van Hydrus is, or Ser Zephirin. Supposedly all dark knights wield greatsword, but and all greatsword wielders are dark knights, all Dragoons wield lance but not all lancers are dragoons. Etc. Though, obviously you need max level class (and job stone to not get bullied too hard in duty finder) to play the game, msq with it's premade WoL fantasy, that WoL persona rarely ends up being your toon's roleplay character persona. There is the differenrence I cannot ignore. Alyssa, as she is now, is bit all over the place, bit of a power fantasy, fitting for that WoL role from msq. She does not feel person yet, as much as she feels collections of attractive traits and ideas. Half-Ishgardian, half-doman, miqo'te, raised at Gridania, Dragoon, adventurer, defender of weak! People looking this from outside... may find it really hard to find her believable, interesting character yet. Good thing is, since she is just draft still, everything is possible and she is as goos as empty canvas. Choose one thing to start over from, to focus on. You really, really want her to be Dragoon, part of current generation of peerless dragonslayers, carrying millenia old martial legacy? Do some reading, title of Dragoon is much more than fancy lance and cool armor. I'm sure you can find enthusiastic Dragoon and Ishgardian lore gurus here from this board. Also, knowing Ishgardians I demand some incredible writing to detail how Alyssa did leave such an exellent impression to someone important enough that she was "urged" to join Knights Dragoon. There has to be more than killing dragon here! :DD I mean, old habits die hard, though lovely Aymeric is currently trying his best, it is going to take more than generation or two to leave history of strict religious control, isolationism and constant war behind. What about her lineage? I mean, Alyssa's parents' story sounds very interesting already! Hydaelyn is closer to pre-modern than modern world, and back then, before commercial flights and stuff, extracontinental traveling was time consuming, expensive and dangerous. What made her father do such a gamble as to travel as far as to Aldenard and to go through that hardships that is to get inside Ishgard to do business. Like, I doubt Ishgard has been North Korea level isolated, but surely there must be whole lot hoops to jump through perfectly to be accepted in, and I can just assume market there is regulated by the church. Plus the place is mostly hyur and elezen populated. What is her mother's family history? Again, I'm not saying "get rid of everything!" because that is silly and closeminded. Good writer can make most extraordinary ideas to work, but just like excellency at anything else, it takes time and effort. Looking forward to see what path you are going to take with ALyssa.
  5. Different opinion time! This snippet caught my eye for few reasons, but core of it boils down to how I view FFXIV: like an ultimate FF theme park! Wherever I turn, there is cool references and eastereggs calling back to classics and this side, to me, makes Hydaelyn as roleplaying environment too, more fun, more inviting. Is my view of Hydaelyn of serious, factual accuracy above everything else valuing flavour? No and yes. I have caught the spirit of playfulness developers of this game have towards whole FF franchise, and in many ways this spirit makes me more concerned of having fun time and coming up with fun stories, and if it takes a little bending of rules and lore, that's fine by me. To my point: if we view the concept "incorporeal/extradimensional being possessing/manipulating/impersonating as someone or something else" purely as trope, I do not think it sound alien to FF at all!! Cagnazzo as king of Baro, just Zemus, Garland made Zidane act weird at Pandemonium, Shuyin's will affected pyreflies at Den of Woe and Ultimecia possessing and manipulatig other Sorceresses throuh time. Just examples, without going too much into technicalities, it's same trope taking different forms. I think these and so many other even better examples at least demonstrate my point. Even in XIV, beside mentioned succubuss cases, the aether oil quest miqo'te lady was possessed by spirit (was it late Allagan citizen?), later half of Dark Knight has us searching high and low more about the spirit of dragon inside Rielle and thaumaturge questline has that loser Coco brother pretty obviously possessed by some kind of malevolent spirit. So, personally would not bat an eye at next case of foreign spirits or other incorporeal things inside someone at FFXIV, maybe even possessing them!! Onwards. Let's, for sake of argument, examine those fair warnings that most likely good number of roleplayers, with more mundane and lore abiding characters, might not be interested in writing with op's character. But who would? "Demonhunter" type of characters come in mind, and "dark mystic" types, but pool for those is smaller, op just needs to find someone relaxed enough with lore. In sense, I do not see difference here, good roleplay comes with good match of right players, and if op is at Balmung, which takes pride in it's diverse communiy, I do not think there is much to worry about. Then criticism time. Which is bit weird, since I admit being the kind of hack who actively browses literature, history and music for inspiration. I'm not familiar with Parasyte, but I guess the title alone gives away enough about that manga. Whether player is concerned with lore or not, anyone had hard time taking ninja named Naruto seriously, if you catch my drift. Possessions are not unheard of, as this thread has confirmed, but going into such detail kind of is. Again, I can only speak for myself, but if I were introduced to character, who is... let's say ahriman possessing roygadyn to have more practical, less...well, voidal vessel to interact with mortals of Hydaelyn to feed off the viciousness of Eorzea's rotten underbelly, I actually could not have problem with accepting that combination of ideas. Unorthodox? Maybe, but not too foreign, which I think is the key here. Parts which make up your character I think are best introduced in order from simplest to more complex and unbelievable, to kinda trap people on path that makes them accept the fantasy you have created. Herein lies the reason why I find so many super detailer character profiles dull, becase they lack any subtlety to hold my interest, even worse if good chunk of that profile is information I would be absolutely hyped about if I found those things out while roleplaying and being in that completely different state of mind. As op's character is just feels bit disjointed and dare I say "edgedark"... not even because of that posession by decapitation, but because in the void, in realm of nothingness teeming with predatorial demons, there apparently in little enclave of proto-civillized beings like krasue who care enouh to send one of their own to religious exile. Even in group of lesser yet special demons, there is one even more special. And dammit, I want to emphasise that if I was writing that sort of "demonhunter" character stuck in company and of op's character, and then in this hypothetical rp there would be this character building moment where my character would learn about op's characters actually very sad history? I would eat it all, no breaks in suspension of disbelief here. This is already too long post, I've lost this text like 3 times for being mad enough to write this on my ancient tablet. Need to do something aboug my tendency to go on with rambling. Two advices I can give you. Continue working with this character, phase out obvious references to manga without deleting them (it is not cool to have glaringly odd reference, but it is exiting to figure out that something actually is reference). That should make your character more acceptable to wider audience. Or find friend to plan and plot with, to come up with this awesome custom rp experience just for you, the kind which is unlike to happen spontaneously. Good luck and sorry for some harsh rethoric here and there in this monster of reply. EDIT Looks like I ended up quating myself? Fixing this on tablet will probably be more work than it's worth...
  6. Seeing that "new 4.0 world" is the most popular vote, the time for making Discord to congregate, plan and prepare this huge attempt is now or never. To be clear, I'm not against any of this, just pointing that out. Balmung is not going to fall if EU datacenter actually successfully made it's own "unoffical RP server" happen. I mainly rp with few good friends, because a) not on Balmung, so catching event is not that simple b) even if there was events on Leviathan I think I could join my voice with those who fairly point out that NA RPC caters ideally to NA players. Which is right, but as with raiding I think I rather sleep when it's 4am for me, than catch static raid, or rp event x)
  7. Hello fellow lurker and oh myyy, I'm feeling bit drowsy already as I write this comment (so my ability to really get written detail through my thick skull may not be at it's peak), but after reading and rereading your character concept I can't but applaud a bit. The amount of care you have put into developing Alastair shines beautifully through your text, and makes him interesting and genuine feeling character in my mind.
  8. Mmm, I really do not have anything constructive to since I never knew Lich had some minor RP action going on. More you know, and fortunately my main raiding character in at Lich atm I hope its not too impudent to ask that from which FCs it would be best to look for roleplayers and event makers on Lich? This thread really sparked up my curiousity.
  9. Hello! My name is Imp, and what am I doing here??? Excellent question, which I am going to answer for myself and yourself now. Obviously FFXIV is awesome game and I enjoy pouring way too many hours into it (even when I should be doing something else). Combine with that the fact that I am bit of a storymaking and roleplaying enthusiast, it all beginning to get glaringly obvious! Yeah, I have stopped by this forum before, lurked, had a good time reading threads (there are so many people so well versed with this game's lore I cannot but salute you). Now, I'm looking forward to maybe jump into discussions myself, so nice to meet you people of Hydaelyn Role-Players. P.S. Apologies of really restless introduction. I am not good at writing these, but E for effort Also I am from EU, not native English speaker so there is the reason why I may sound just... exotic sometimes. Have a nice day, dear reader, and cheers!
