Kang Posted October 31, 2016 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2016 Hi all! As my insomnia currently refuses to let me sleep, I thought I'd kill the time by finally making an introductory post. My previous RP experience has actually been only with Star Wars games. Both Jedi Academy and SWTOR. So this is my first venture in RPing in either FF or pseudo-medieval fantasy. I'm a total geek for cheesy kung fu movies and martial arts. You could say I'm an action junkie. I grew up watching Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies. Power Rangers was my favourite show and my other big videogame niche is fighting games. As you can probably guess, the FFXIV Job I'm most drawn to is the Monk. (Samurai would be cool too but not until it happens of course) My previous FFXIV experience consisted of playing for about 2-3 months, leveling mostly by myself a Paladin until lvl 50 with 2 other friends who have since left the game. I stopped playing for a while after SWTOR released a new expansion though I expect to be playing more of FFXIV again now. I think a big problem (other than fitting my FFXIV time in with 3 other hobbies, school, work and some semblance of a social life), was that I failed to create a character that I was emotionally involved with. But I think my new concept will definitely interest me more. I haven't yet actually RPed within FFXIV since I don't have a Balmung character and my server has no RP that I'm aware of. But I think it's time that I finally drop the coin on a Balmung character. My biggest challenge will likely be the lore. RPing in SWTOR was easier because Star Wars lore has been well established. Whereas FFXIV is a fresh and new universe so there's a lot to take in. That and I honestly had a lot of trouble following the main story during my first playthrough (it's tough after playing a fully voiced MMO with modern dialogue). Whenever I end up on Balmung, I plan on re-rolling a fresh new character and hopefully I'll better understand the plot. I also plan on making a post in the Character Workshop to see if my character concept works. Looking forward to meeting, adventuring and telling great stories with you all! Link to comment

Thunderbolt300 Posted October 31, 2016 Share #3 Posted October 31, 2016 Hey there, and welcome aboard to Balmung! I think you'll be quite happy with the expansiveness on Balmung- there's a lot of different ways to get connected (such as the Linkshell, Free Company, and event calendars), so if you want to get off into RP with a running start, that ought to be completely viable. You can also make a post in the Making Connections if you'd like to spice things up even more! As someone else that only really started a few months ago? Yeah, drinking in the lore is like trying to drink from a firehose. If you can find yourself a copy of the Encyclopedia Eorzea, that might be a good way of getting a pretty easily-digestible lore dose. In any case, you're certainly well to tap me in-game if you like! Alternately, you can also poke around here for lore posts regarding what you want to know! Sounsyy in particular, being our resident loremaster, has made several great posts regarding lore information pulled from the game all the way back to 1.0. This includes MNK stuff for you to stumble upon and peruse, if she doesn't pop up to provide the links herself. And, of course, if you have any particular questions, feel free to ask here or in the relevant sections of the forums and someone is bound to provide you with at least some information! Link to comment
Kirakira Posted October 31, 2016 Share #5 Posted October 31, 2016 Welcome, Kang! I hope you were able to get some rest, at least. A friend of mine that got me into this was absolutely obsessed with the Shaolin vs. series, and we watched Shaolin vs Lama more times than I care to admit. Definitely an enjoyable genre. As far as roleplaying, it is a lot to take in, but you are at a great resource for learning about it here. Like Gegenji and Thunderbolt300 posted, you'll find answers to your questions here in their respective forums, and whatever you can't find, ask! We're here to help (especially Sounsyy when it comes to lore). So, you're trying to create a character here and not transfer? As Balmung is the place to be and there is quite the population, that's gonna be tough. I have heard some success stories of people making a character in the early early to early morning, but I'm not sure how viable that is anymore. I know the one sure fire way is to do the character transfer, which allows you to bring your other characters as well should you want to. Let me know what you decide to do so I can come and /poke you in Ul'dah! Link to comment
Mandy Posted November 1, 2016 Share #6 Posted November 1, 2016 Hi there! As a fellow newblet to the FF XIV RP scene I found this particular thread to be very handy as a refresher/info dump for threads about lore on the forums for when you get to the character creation for your RP. Good luck! Link to comment
Kang Posted November 1, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted November 1, 2016 So, you're trying to create a character here and not transfer? As Balmung is the place to be and there is quite the population, that's gonna be tough. I have heard some success stories of people making a character in the early early to early morning, but I'm not sure how viable that is anymore. I know the one sure fire way is to do the character transfer, which allows you to bring your other characters as well should you want to. I'll be transferring a fresh new character that I recently made on another server. I figured that might've been a bit confusing with the way I worded. Though I've pretty much accepted at this point that transferring a character is the only way possible. The two main reasons I'm transferring a fresh character instead of the one I'm currently playing were so that I can still have something to play with my non-RP/non-Balmung friends if they decide to resub. The other reason was that I wanted to change my character's name and race and that's a lot of coin to drop, on top of the transfer. The only annoying part is I'll have to re-grind, though I'll have the added benefit of running through the storyline again with a slightly better understanding. Thanks for the greetings, everyone! Lydia Lightfoot Posted November 1, 2016 Share #8 Posted November 1, 2016 Something to note - The same single $18 fee can transfer up to 8 characters at once, not just a single character. So if you have multiple characters on the same origin server, you may as well transfer the lot of them and then your new character can benefit from the gil and items the others have to spare (provided you have a friend who can help you pass it between them, or you join an FC that allows use of the Company Chest for that).
