Another Balmung Newcomer!

Hi, everyone! :moogle:

I'm a newbie to Balmung, so I thought I would come and introduce myself here. I've been playing FFXIV off and on for about a year with my husband on another server (which has mostly consisted of us bludgeoning our way through the story quests), and the time has come for me to FINALLY check out the roleplaying! I am a huge, huge fan of all forms of roleplay. I've been doing it in other MMOs for about eight years, and, to make myself feel old, about fifteen or so in tabletop. I did my transfer a few days ago, and I've lurked here and there to check things out. Now, I'm hoping to come out from the shadows.

At the moment, I have two characters I plan to be using for RP:

Azure Sea: A Roegadyn lady, born to a Hellsguard mother and a seafaring Sea Wolf father. Originally of Thanalan, she left at a young age for Limsa Lominsa in search of her father. Though she never found him, she became inspired by the Yellowjackets, and joined their ranks during her search. Recently, she has since resigned to pursue her true passion: Baking. She's a woman with a big axe, a big grin, and a big heart.

Ahzra'li Lhomi: A taciturn and dour young hunter of the Keepers. He is much more at home among the trees with a bow for company than in the big cities and crowds, and is quite knowledgeable on the Shroud's flora. He aspires to learn the art of alchemy so he can put his knowledge to use, but that is easier said than done. After all, you can take a Keeper out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the Keeper.

With those out of the way, I do have a question:  I have seen a lot of people suggest that newbies to the community should try to join a linkshell. Is that a good way to go? Are they just OOC chat channels, or are they IC also?

It's nice to meet everyone! I hope to catch people in game soon!

I think that joining a linkshell or two (or three, or four - whatever you can reasonably handle) is a great way to go!

There are some OOC linkshells for RP-based networking, but I think there are many that are treated as IC devices (my own linkshell included.) It really depends on the linkshell, but I think there's definitely a healthy mix of IC and OoC linkshells out there!

Another good way to get a feel for things is to attend an event, or perhaps many different events. Each event comes with its own flavor and set of activities, so even if you don't have much fun at one, I think it's always worth rolling the dice again on another.

Best of luck and welcome to the community.

Hiya there!

There are linkshells for both! I think most of the ones here are more OOC groups for planning, coordination, scheduling and chatting, but they might go IC too. There are a few IC-only ones as well, but I generally see those coupled with Free Companies.

They're definitely good places to start if you're trying to get into RP. Especially if a large RP event isn't your jive or if the chat scroll gets too intense.

You'll also find that a lot of people do open-world RP on Balmung and if you stick by the major cities, you can go for walk-up RP as well. A lot of people will use the RP status icon or put something to the effect of "walkup friendly" in their search info. If it looks like a big group or something pre-established and you're not sure, I'd recommend sending a /tell to one of the people. Most people are pretty friendly on this server.

If you've got any questions on the RPC, wiki, other site features, etc, lemme know!

Hey there, and welcome aboard to Balmung and the RPC!

Linkshells and a good Free Company are definitely the ways to go! You can also create a Making Connections post here on the RPC to try and wrangle some more long-term contacts for your characters that would be good matches. All you need is a good idea of what you'd like to be looking for (such as other alchemists, wilderness survivalists in the Shroud, and so on).

Based on what little you've said about your characters so far, however, I would point you toward ShroudLife (details in my signature) for Ahzra'li! He ought to be a perfect fit for that Linkshell in particular. If you have any questions about it or would like to get an invite, just let me know!

Thank you for all of the replies and info! You guys certainly know how to make people feel welcome.

I was considering stopping into one of the open taverns I've seen advertised in the party finder. Can I say I am entirely too excited to see so many player-run taverns? They can be hard to find in other games.

Thunderbolt300: Wow, that does seem spot on. I'd love to try it out! That would certainly come in handy for Shroud-lore things.

You're more than welcome! You can go ahead and visit the Discord invite in the OP in the ShroudLife thread- just add your character name to your nickname when you get into the channel (helps with telling who is who- you'll see what I'm talking about once you get into the channel). The ShroudLife Discord is arguably more active than the in-game LS, but you can ask for RP in either channel and get replies!

Hi there! I'd like to give you a big welcome to the RPC! Hope you have a great time here. Your characters do sound very interesting! I'd love to meet them someday so feel free to hit me up, I run a tavern along with some unlawful RP if you're ever interested ^.^

See you in-game!

Hey there and welcome to Balmung!

The best place to start is with the Balmung RP Calendar and finding a few events that angle toward the kind of RP you're interested in.  Then you can start looking at other character profiles once you've found a few characters or personalities you'd like to meet.  While you're window shopping, be sure to check out the Free Company Hall or the Linkshell Hall to find Free Companies and public groups that may suit your character.

For lore questions, be sure to check out Sounsyy's Lore Compilations; she's done an amazing job with compiling a lot of the game lore into easy-to-find threads!

You're welcome to add me to your friends list; I'm a fairly busy person, both in-game and out, but I'm always happy to schedule/arrange a day to roleplay with folks!  You're also welcome to come out to my Free Company's open roleplay evening Nights on the Toll, which happens every Thursday that I'm not hosting the Gridania Story-Go-Round.

All that said, I hope you find what you're looking for and hopefully I'll see you around in-game!

Thank you for the welcomes! And for all of the helpful links, Syranelle. I will have to check all of those out when I am out of work. Very interested in the Nights on the Toll once my toons are big enough to get there without getting their faces eaten by mobs (I left my main on my old server to keep playing with the husband's character!).

If there's anything I can do to help (like Unsynced dungeon runs or armed escorts!) let me know and I'll be happy to pitch in where I can.  ^_^
