Ddarke101 Posted June 14, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 14, 2018 (edited) Hello there, hello all! A little about me: I'm a vet from ESOEU, from a long time back. I took a break that ended up being indefinite, and for the longest time, I thought RP would forever be just a cherished phase of my life. But recently, my interest has peaked again. I don't feel like joining ESO again, for multiple reasons, mainly being that I am a different person to some extent. I scoured Reddit for good MMOs for RP'ing, and there was a resounding praise of FFXIV, so I thought I might as well check it out. - But wait! I have to figure out if this is even a thing for me and if I'm a thing for this seemingly (first hand impression, I gotta say I'm super impressed) community! So I think, perhaps I'd first get the basics out the way? Don't mind if I do (please?) I've absolutely NO clue about FFXIV. I'm so far away from the Final Fantasy universe, that I guess my only real connection with FFXIV, is that I worked for a short while as a 3D-aidé for IO-Interactive (the guys who make Hitman) - which I think got bought out by Square Enix? My RP'ing reins are pretty dusty, and so might my style be. I'm into semi-realism, relatively melodramatic, gritty, free-moving, multistyled RP. Essentially, I'm used to play in a world where you'd theoretically choose as many layers of the world as you'd want, including Crime, Nobility, Proletariat, Adventure, Heroics, War, Scholarwork - and with most of it making sense interlogically - ie. it being connected, and seeming grounded. I absolutely adored that about ESO, and other communities (SWTOR and GW2) didn't really sport that. I also love both sides of the spectrum, the wonderful stills of average life, like a tired evening at an open tavern after a grand event, or the brittle, if not frail tenderness in dealing with the deeper emotional troubles of a noble or criminal's life - behind closed doors. On the other hand, I also love heroics, the madness of a competition, where characters' skills shine, and show eachother their style - and of course, taking down a big monster, rescuing an ally from a group of criminals, or solving an arcano-mechanical mystery! I'm not really the most fit-for-style nerd, and real life can sometimes take a toll on my gametime, with things like my studies, diminishing family and the endless struggle of maintaining good friendships. I'm still quite nerdy. I rant about film-making, study philosophy, most of my friends are scientists/to-be scientists (Hey! I'm young) and I play D&D. That about covers me, now the real iffy, is that before I get too excited about the game, and then do something reckless, I'd like to know if this is something this community holds to some extent. I'm openminded though! My style is not a requirement, it's just what I'm used to, and what I've found I enjoy. I'm also a complete newbie. And nothing makes complete sense to me here, so I'm really intruiged how things work. Like the minutia - Which server should I join? How do RP Guilds work? (They're called Linkshells, right?), what are Free Companies? Does Tavern RP exist? Which 'Guilds' host what? Are some races considered Gimmick races? How extremely high magic is the world? Do I need to level to max? Do I need to buy the Stormblood expansion? Should I revere those Warriors of Light folk, I've noticed? How much Lore do I gotta know? Is swearing banned? Does ERP (*shivers*) exist? How's the normal style of Emote-to-Talk ratio? Do community events even occur? Are ingame skills referenced IC (like spells)? Are classes even referenced IC? Can I go against my char style IC? Is White magic always good? Do Miqo'te have wares if I am willing to buy? Is there a mega inside-joke all should know? Are memes a thing? D'you like jazz? How do mages work (I hear the term White and Black a lot, and is it as straightforward as it seems? - Do they study), is crime even a thing? Are Humans OP? And do Non-RP'ers hate RP'ers? I'm SO intruiged and excited to hear about this community! - Hope I'm not too troublesome. Kind regards, Darke (I had an old SquareEnix account named that, but I forgot the password and security question) Edited June 14, 2018 by Ddarke101 I wrote Stormborn instead of Stormblood. That's okay! FFXIV is set in a world separate from other Final Fantasy titles, though, to be fair, each Final Fantasy game is in a completely different, unconnected setting. Though, there are suggestions that there may be some kind of connection. 25 minutes ago, Ddarke101 said: I'm into semi-realism, relatively melodramatic, gritty, free-moving, multistyled RP. Do I need to level to max? Do I need to buy the Stormblood expansion? Should I revere those Warriors of Light folk, I've noticed? RP guilds work like any other guild, I suppose. They're just...guilds. In FFXIV, they're called "Free Companies." They're far more similar to a WoW guild than an ESO-style guild. Linkshells are a completely different kettle of fish - they're more akin to what you would have encountered in ESO as "guilds." You can be in up to 7 linkshells. If you're interested in looking at RP guilds and Linkshells that are recruiting, you can check out the Free Companies and Linkshells tabs up top. As to your question about races, I don't think any races are considered "gimmick" races, although there are a lot of Miqo'te and Au'ra these days. Eorzea is very high magic (as is Hydaelyn as a whole, really). In fact, magic is so strong in Eorzea that it posed a very strong threat to the Empire of Garlemald when they first encountered Eorzean magi. There are healers that can bring a person back from the brink of death, potions that can change your appearance (literally), an entire Class/Job that, in terms of the storyline behind it, were literally drawing power from a stolen dragon's eye (because dragon's eyes apparently have a lot of magical power). There are magi who can lay waste to entire areas with their spells. At the same time, most people aren't magical, and most people don't have access to things that the Warrior of Light (which is who you are in the quests themselves) has. It's completely possible to play a perfectly ordinary character, without any magic at all. Personally, I think Stormblood is absolutely worth a purchase. But it's a somewhat big investment, so I completely understand if you just want to buy the ARR/Heavensward bundle. 25 minutes ago, Ddarke101 said: I'm SO intruiged and excited to hear about this community! - Hope I'm not too troublesome. (IC, I'm not gonna barge in to anything, but I'd theoretically like to have the possibility to do so, if it made sense ) Are you saying that the Questline is defining of the gameplay? How do mages work (I hear the term White and Black a lot, and is it as straightforward as it seems? - Do they study), is crime even a thing? Welcome to the RPC and Eorzea! Okay so, going down the list: Servers: Balmung, Mateus, and Omega are the three biggest RP servers. Balmung is locked due to population currently, I think. Mateus is primarily NA, Omega is primarily EU. You can find guilds, aka Free Companies, on the blue tabs above just below the site logo. They're divided up by server. Guilds: The classic "guilds" you're probably used to are called Free Companies in FFXIV. But you also have access to Linkshells, which are sorta like Invite-Only Chat Channels. You can have up to 8 Linkshells, but only one Free Company. So, you'll find a lot of RP Linkshells for various types of RP or concepts, but you'll also find numerous Free Companies that offer the same. Some FCs also offer a LS so people from other FCs can still chat with them. As for community events, yes they do happen, pretty frequently in fact. There's an RPC calendar on the left side panel of the site, but there's also a dedicated Balmung and Mateus server event calendar that I'm aware of. (Possibly also one for Omega?) But I don't have the links on hand. There's all kinds of events going on every day. I highly recommend jumping in, even if you just wanna watch and get a feel for how people RP here. Some of the bigger events will murder you with chat scroll though, so be aware of that. Magic: The world of Hydaelyn is a nice mix of high magic and grounded realism. High Magic exists, but few people alive have access to it. The MSQ revolves around the actions of a fantastical, The One, Warrior of Light and as such what you see as you progress through the story tends to focus on the more fantastical and less mundane side of life. Magic does have rules though in the lore. Some people ignore them, others are a little more strict on them. You'll run into both types of RPers with about equal frequency. You can learn about magic stuff here! Leveling / Stormblood: You do not need to be max level to start RPing! Being higher level does help in the sense that you have access to more gear "glamours" and also access to more areas that people might be RPing in. Other than that, if you have a character who's centered in one of the starter cities (Ul'dah is the biggest RP hub usually) you won't need to be high level to jump in. Around Level 15, the MSQ will give you access to airships which will help you travel between the cities faster, so that's a good target to aim for. As for Stormblood, it's a good expansion, but it's not required. Play through ARR and Heavensward first and see if this is your jam before you spend more money! Swearing isn't banned (FFXIV's lore team encourages it), and ERP does occur on all the RP servers. It usually doesn't happen publicly, so there's that. Classes: Think of classes like a standardized way that that city or guild teaches how to use a specific weapon. Usually these classes also serve their respective city-states in their own unique ways. This doesn't always carry over ICly to a character. You can know how to use a spear, but not have been taught at the Lancers' Guild in Gridania. This just means that the way your character uses the spear might ICly be different than the way someone else ICly uses a spear, and that's okay! You can reference the classes, or you don't have to. Sometimes you're playing as a Dark Knight oocly, but ICly you're just a guy with a big sword. Inside joke: "Pray return to the Waking Sands." You'll learn this one soon enough. Mages: Refer to the above magic post! In brief, don't focus overly much on your ooc skills / abilities. You can use them, and they provide a nice base for what sort of magicks each class can feasibly wield, but they're not the end all be all of mages ICly / in lore. To fuel magic, mages use Aether. Aether flows through people and the earth like energy. It can be passive or kinetic. When aether is manipulated in a way it doesn't naturally flow, that's called magic. How a mage manipulates aether is what defines the type of mage, less so the spells they cast. Some types of magicks are ancient and forgotten, and only recently revived - these are usually the 30+ Jobs. Something that's often confusing about the leveling system is that the 1-30 base classes very often have absolutely no relation to the 30+ Job that follows after. An experienced conjurer does not become a white mage, they're two separate magicks, for example. Crime: Crime is a staple of the world and many RP groups! If you're into crime RP, there's quite a few groups who focus on that. Lore: This game has a ton of lore scattered throughout the MSQ, sidequests, item descriptions, and just NPC dialogue. Some of it's true, some of it isn't. How much you need to know is really up to you and your RP group. There's plenty of people out there who aren't too worried about what lore says, and some who're super "strict" about it. Most are probably in between. If you want to learn about the lore, I've got some posts on a wide variety of topics here that might help. Or you can ask questions on the forums here! Hope this helps! Edit: Quote I'm just more concerned with whether there is a logical realism to things like being hurt, physical pain, that fire hurts in most cases. Or are everyone expected to be as stacked as an OOC character? Yes, despite all the fantastical things there is still a base, somewhat logical, realism to injuries, most peoples' physical capabilities, etc. There are some people who RP more high fantasy and some who play more grounded. How you end up RPing injuries may depend on where you fall on that spectrum. Edited June 14, 2018 by Sounsyy 2 Link to comment

(IC, I'm not gonna barge in to anything, but I'd theoretically like to have the possibility to do so, if it made sense ) That's pretty much the definition of RP that I've seen, for the most part. However, realistically, you're going to encounter crazy every now and again. I try to avoid crazy, but we have a shiny Blacklist for the crazy that tries to crawl into our RP. 1 hour ago, Ddarke101 said: Are you saying that the Questline is defining of the gameplay? Yes. The main story of the game affects everything that happens, even if you are not playing a character directly connected to the situation at hand. Most players at the very least acknowledge the events going on in the main story. 1 hour ago, Ddarke101 said: What groups are you in? Well, I am unfortunately on Balmung, which is locked at the moment because of population. But, my main group that I roll with is called Roll Eorzea, and they're basically a structured RP group where we all sign up to be tortured by Verad. I also have a few other friends I RP with from time to time. 1 hour ago, Ddarke101 said: I'm just more concerned with whether there is a logical realism to things like being hurt, physical pain, that fire hurts in most cases. Or are everyone expected to be as stacked as an OOC character? I think that, for most people, a ridiculously overpowered character would just be a huge turnoff. Most people accept injuries, and want to RP them out. Some people don't, but I don't really RP with those people. 1 hour ago, Ddarke101 said: Wait, if I have to buy all that... That's like... How much? + the monthly subscription? Even after that, do I need to level all the way to max, and have done most raids or whatnot to be viable for most RP? You get one free month of time with ARR, iirc. If you pick up the Complete Edition (which is honestly the most value for your money, as Stormblood alone is $39.99), you're looking at $59.99 USD. I don't know how that translates in your country's currency. If you are content with only having one character on your server, you can get a subscription for as low as $12.99 USD a month, but the standard subscription is $14.99 USD. I poked around Amazon and found this ARR/Heavensward Bundle for like, $15 bucks: https://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Online-playstation-4/dp/B00UO4NL9Y/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1528946690&sr=8-12&keywords=final%2Bfantasy%2Bxiv&th=1 (check the "see all buying options" and there's a list of different places, and a mix of new or used games). Those seem to all be physical games, however, which means there might be a delay in you getting them. You do not have to level to max level to be "viable" for RP. The last major storyline I was involved in, one of the main characters was level 33. The only thing that not being higher level does is prevent you from using certain gear (so you may not get the exactly look you want) and prevents you from going to certain areas. For instance, you cannot access the Heavensward zones until you've started the Heavensward main story quest, which requires you to complete the ARR main story quest past level 50. Stormblood is a bit less restrictive, as it doesn't require you to have completed the previous expansion's main story quest, but you cannot access places like Kugane and Ala Mhigo until you've started on that main storyline, and even then, they unlock at certain points (I didn't get to Kugane until level 63 I think?) I've looked through the FC stuff I could find in the forums and things like that, and to me at least, it's gonna take a little while to sort things out, and get through it all -.- That being said; how troublesome would it be to headhunt folk? A playstyle I deeply enjoyed, and one that made the whole mess of being a new player, quite a lot simpler, was that of being tutored or an apprentice. Particularly in a field that has a lot of 'everyone could use that' like a medic or a guard. Or even something like being a servant. Of course, it's a two-way job, but experience tells me that most find it quite fun! Do you know if there's a more efficient way to find either records of people doing said jobs? FCs or Linkshells that generally work with a 'learning' character (I don't like playing a complete scholar on a first try tho -.-) - or maybe anyone's heard of someone that OOC'ly or IC'ly is looking for a student? Or could perhaps enjoy it. I get if this is maybe a pretty tall order - it's just that I rarely jump into anything like trying out a massive RPG game and RP'ing like crazy, without some sort of confidant that might enjoy me being 'stupid' or unknowing for some time? It is also because I've found that established characters know and explore cooler things, than a newcomer to an area (which makes a lot of sense). Getting piggybacked is a logical reason for a character to participate in things, which is something I'm really into. I hate when characters suddenly 'show up' to events without any connective reason to, like friends or such. I do, however, intend to insert myself fully as a character that is a newcomer to a general hub, as to enjoy exploration doubly. - I don't want to play an established relation with anyone though, like a sibling; that might feel sort of unnatural. A simple yes or no is always good enough for me, but if you've got info for me to start with, I'd be more than overjoyed. Edited June 14, 2018 by Ddarke101 Link to comment
Sounsyy Posted June 14, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 14, 2018 Balmung was for a very long time the "place to be" for RP. But because of an exploding population causing server stability problems, SE locked the server for a very long time causing people to look elsewhere and establish newer communities. This is where Mateus (NA) and Omega (EU) came from. They are both great alternatives to Balmung! As far as looking for carving out your place in these communities and establishing a learning character, I'd recommend making a post in the Making Connections forum on the RPC and seeing if anyone is interested in interacting with the type of character you're wanting to play! Alternatively, if you've decided which server you want to make your character on, you can go directly to the Mateus or Omega discords and try making some friends there and setting up some potential connections! I'm sure there'll be someone looking to take on an apprentice or a retainer of some sort if that's the sort of character you're going for. Otherwise, feel free to just jump in and start RPing! A newcomer is bound to stumble unwittingly into some event or another or maybe just follow the sounds of drunken revelry to the nearest tavern to make some friends. 1 Link to comment

Thank you so much! - I wasn't sure if that was the way to go. Sad to hear that NA and EU are split, and that I can't get to RP with you, as a Balmung player -.-, you're awesome. It sounds like Omega is less active than Mateus, is that true? I'm in the EU, but I switch my sleeping schedule a lot, so if one is much more active than the other, I might be inclined. But this is awesome! - Will do! Edited June 14, 2018 by Ddarke101 Link to comment
Unnamed Mercenary Posted June 14, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 14, 2018 I'd recommend rolling a character on both and checking our their respective groups to see what works best for you. Before the EU datacenter was actually hosted in the EU, a lot of EU players had made characters on Balmung and I wouldn't be surprised if Mateus is similar in that regard. While you'll see the most activity from Balmung and Mateus here on the RPC, it's a weird confirmation bias feedback loop in that regard. All the site resources are open to anyone on any server, although we do add filters in the Free Company and Linkshell sections for the bigger servers to help everyone find what they're looking for. (Which also means we can add them for more servers later on!) 1 Link to comment
