Anime/Manga General

I'm a huuuuuge fan of Eva. And yeah it's confusing as hell to watch. It took me a few sessions to figure the whole thing out =p

I would imagine so! Like apparently the creator was in a DEEP depression for awhile during the making of the manga or something like that? All I can remember in one scene is the main character seeing the red-hair chick (Asuka?) in a hospital and some stuff happens...then next scene suddenly he is yanked himself and uhh...yeah...

Confusing to say the least :P

What have you heard to indicate "probably forever?" I was under the impression that it's on hiatus and coming back next year.

There has been no official announcement from what I can tell (then again, I hope to GOD I am wrong since I haven't looked for it). Not even a "See you next year!" or anything like that. NO previews on the last episode (which means nothing, I know). Though, honestly, I am really relying on my Tumblr friends that are obsessed with it (and DAMN dem girls are obsessed with it xD) to scream in my ear, "THEY ANNOUNCED SEASON TWO!"

...like they did with Free! Iwatobi Swim Club >.> *sigh*

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this happens to AoT because SO many other AMAZING series have had the same fate. Berserk being one that instantly comes to mind.  But, I keep hoping to the VERY core of my tiny MINISCULE black soul I am wrong xD

Attack on Titan's slated for the spring or summer 2014 season. I'll hunt down the link later, but it was probably on ANN if you want to save me the effort.

There's really no limit to what I'll watch. Last season I was watching, or am still watching for those that are continuing, Attack on Titan, Watamote, Sunday without God, Hakkenden, Free!, Hunter x Hunter, Majestic Prince, and so on on Crunchyroll alone. Then there Monogatari Second Season, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, Symphogear, Danganropa, and High School DxD on fansub.

So, yeah, my tastes are rather... all over the place. Mecha, harem, violence, action, comedy, a little shounen-ai, some magical girl, and so on and so forth. To name my favorites would be a little... difficult? If I liked it, I bought it, and I don't have room for the ones I've got and there's more coming out all the time.

I'm not so big on manga though. I read Naruto and Bleach after a few months so there's a nice backlog, but it's actually more because they never seem to end rather than that I don't like waiting. Every so often a new series will catch my attention and I'll read it, but I don't go looking for them.

Kill la Kill, Log Horizon, and Kyoukai no Kanata while fans of Infinite Stratos and Valvrave the Liberator are picking the second season up. There's also the Blazblue one as well.

This is a little off-topic, but jeezus what the frak is up with names for anime. xD So many just sound like a bunch of random words mushed together haha.

Any thoughts on shows from next season? I assume most people are going to try Kill la Kill, Log Horizon, and Kyoukai no Kanata while fans of Infinite Stratos and Valvrave the Liberator are picking the second season up. There's also the Blazblue one as well.

Of those, the only one I'm familiar with is Blazblue. I played Calamity Trigger a ton (Main: Taokaka!) although my interest was waning by the time Continuum Shift made it over. Still, I love the idea of revisiting CT's story in anime form!

This is probably not 'appropriate' but seeing as it isn't explicit I thought I would share it, since it amused me.

One of my best friends is JET who recently got back to the States. She asked me if I wanted some manga she had acquired while over there since they reminded her of me and she didn't have room for all her stuff in her new apartment. I haven't really read any manga in a while sans Pokemon Special don't you fucking judge me so I was like, whatever, sure. I got the package today...

I gotta be honest. While I'm a pretty fabulous individual, Free! Iwatobi Swim Club makes me feel a little uncomfortable...

I watched a few episodes, but I got this unsettling feeling like there's a government van outside my house getting ready to take me away. So I stopped. I wonder if straight guys feel that way when watching every other anime ever? :b

Ooh, your friend's got interesting tastes. LSD's got sadistic stuff, like BDSM and rape. Chi-Ran's stuff tends to lean that way too, though she does more than just BL.

Eh, I wasn't thrilled with Infinite Stratos despite the mecha qualities. Too much emphasis on the harem aspect. But I'll probably watch it anyway. I'm definitely looking forward to Valvrave though. I'll keep on with Monogatari of course. Hm, I plan to look into Diabolik Lovers, Coppelion, Nagi no Asukara, Kyoukai no Kanata, Strike the Blood, Kill la Kill, Yuusha ni Narenakatta, Walkure Romanze, Unbreakable Machine Doll, Tokyo Ravens, Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova, Blazblue, and possibly Pupa. I wasn't too thrilled with the first Freezing, but I might look into the second season too.

Hm. Yes. I'll be busy, and that's assuming I'll drop half of them when they fail to keep me entertained.

Edit: Ooh, and I just wanted to mention that Free's not that bad. I don't think you can even claim any legitimate BL.

Well... In the risk of possibly offending people, Free! isn't gay in the sense that it has actual gay character and BL, but it still definitely panders that message for the audience whom are females. Just like how a lot of cute girls SoL anime these days have female characters who aren't technically yuri for each other, but pander to the male audience because they want it.

I mean, when you have a guy leg locking on to the stomach of another guy, saying things like "I'll show you a sight you've never seen," etc etc, even though that isn't technically BL, it's a bit obvious what the show is trying to do. That said, I thought Free! was still a good show and surprisingly did the swimming sports thing well.

Oh no, I didn't mean to imply that it was! Sorry if it came off as projecting, I know the difference between two. The implications just made me kinda uncomfortable, weird as that is to say. It was just the heavy, foreboding sense  of "You really shouldn't be watching this." I suppose it just seemed kinda voyeuristic to me.

That's not to imply it's not good! I'm sure it's fantastic. I've been told the source material is really solid. I just can't get over that 'creepy old guy' feeling watching it though. I've never been that way about any anime before, even other 'high school' settings type ones. I guess because they're young boys who have been sort of gratuitously sexualized and I'm officially in the age bracket where 'boy watching' IRL would get me put in jail for many years.

I can see where you're coming from with this. I think you're having such a problem with it now because the 'C.O.G. Syndrome' (I made an acronym! Yay!) is more or less desensitized and/or completely absent for the men who are attracted to the opposite gender due to the over sexualization of most female characters that are damn near CONSTANTLY present in most Animes. So I guess, for better or worse, we're kind of use to it? You know, the whole moe thing and girls that look way older than they really are and vice versa.

People could argue that, "But they are 17 in the Anime! That is TOTALLY legal in Japan!" but that is a topic in a very grey area that I won't bother getting into. Again, totally see where you are coming from. Hell, even when I'm talking to 18, 19, and even certain 20 year olds, I have a little bit of reservation if we start flirting.

In the end, if you can enjoy it for what it is (which is NOT Yaoi xD), it is actually quite a fun series. Making fun of how they take off their shirts as if they were unsheathing Samurai swords might detract you enough to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

Anime:

Currently waiting for Valvrave Season 2. Not watching anything at the moment since a lot of the good ones just ended. Some of the recent ones I enjoyed were: Hataraku Maou-sama! (I really loved this one), Majestic Prince, Symphogear G, Sword Art Online, Suisei no Gargantia, Eureka Seven: AO, and Zetsuen no Tempest. Also watched the latest DBZ movie.

Manga:

I'm currently reading Magi (gosh, the last page of chapter 199 probably contains the biggest surprise in the whole manga), Naruto (it's about to end, I think), Bleach (really bored with this but it's the final arc so might as well finish it), Fairy Tail, Claymore, Rosario to Vampire II, HSD Kenichi, Zettai Karen Children, and Haikyu!!. My friends keep trying to get me into One Piece but I just...can't for some reason.

I've never really been big on anime or manga, but I did go through Battle Royale after being given it by a friend after we watched the movie and I'd read the original novel. It was pretty good, if very awkward to go through in parts due to some of the...uh...adult themes presented within. It was a bit of a culture shock, really!

I really need to get back into watching more anime.

I'm waiting patiently for the all new Sailormoon - which is going to stream worldwide!

I used to read manga in French to improve my french reading skills :3 Read Basara like that and a few volumes of Fushigi Yuugi and some short story collection.

Anyone else a big fan of J-drama? ;p or K-Drama, for that matter! It's sorta supplanted anime in my viewing selections xD

I watched Wolf Children Rain and Snow (Snow and Rain?) last night. It made me feel all the feels. All the feels forever. I had to watch a few episodes of The Wire just to calm myself down emotionally enough that I could sleep afterwards. It's just... powerful. And beautiful. I mean it's not for everyone... there's no action and it's mostly just about a single mother trying to raise two kids (that happen to be werewolves) but if you can stomach slice-of-life family dramas then this is the best of them. Bar none, hands down this movie will make you feel more feels than any anime ever has before.

Haha, I'm a pretty big fan of the cute girls doing cute things in anime group, but I must admit first time I picked up Strike Witches I dropped if before finishing the first episode (back when it started airing.) Thinking wellllll that was weird.

After the show was almost done with season one, and AMV's started popping up with action scenes from the series I went back and finished it, there was a weird rational behind them not wearing pants, but its just silly cause Saya wears a skirt...just leaves me thinking why they all don't. (I know the META reason of course cause: fanservice.)

Also....how did I miss the news of a new sailormoon coming out O.o!? Man I am slipping.

Might as well leave this here:

Robots robots robots robots. I just recently re-watched Shin Mazinger Shougeki Z-hen, as well as the Mazinkaiser miniseries/OVA. As far as actual series, Mushibugyo just ended...and so did Majestic Prince...but other than those, I'm watching Gifuu Doudou, Danball Senki Wars, and hopefully some sub groups will be picking up Gaist Crusher. (And the new Hajime no Ippo starts in two days, I'm hype as hell for that.)

Manga-wise, there was just a few I regularly keep up on. Namely, Toriko, Kingdom, and Onepunch Man. Those are my big three as far as currently running series. Toriko's still a Jump weekly, so it's out every week, Kingdom has been long running, so they translate about 8 chapters a week, which is nice, and Onepunch is like...two chapters a month, if we're lucky.

Hehehe, I never had any weird feeling on Strike Witches (my brain has created a compartment titled "WTF Japan?" that allows me to ignore some of the oddities per my American culture).  Instead, I watched all of Strike Witches and came away with ".....meh, nothing special. It was okay, though."

My most reason disappointment was Cat Planet Cuties. After reading comments that it was actually pretty good despite the obvious intent of fan service, I gave it a shot.  I'll agree, with slightly toning down some fan service, the first half was a solid show, but it felt like they hit the story's climax/resolution at that point and the last half was just sort of fan service filler to stretch out the show.  Seemed like they resolved the primary conflict way too early for the sake of more bouncy and nakey.  Status: I am disappoint.

Also, Sword Art Online.... $90ish dollars per blu ray and divided into 3 sets?  Aniplex, I am FURIOUSLY DISAPPOINT!  >:/

I also liked Our Home's Fox Deity.  Nice spin on the harem anime not having a real harem aspect.

Hmm... Penguindrum...

I always feel like when I don't like an artsy anime or movie it's because I'm just too stupid and uncultured to 'get it' but honestly I just think Penguindrum went way too far out of its way to make the plot obscure and hard to follow. By the end I still didn't know what the heck I had just watched or why anything any of the characters did mattered. I went to talk to the guy who 'recommended' it to me about his take on it and he replied: 'I never recommended that show to you. I just said it had good theme and ending songs'. I had one or two of my other anime buddies check it out and it left all of us scratching our heads.

I mean, I'm no neanderthal... I love stuff like 5cm/s or my abovementioned Wolf Children movie, and even super-artsy stuff like Revolutionary Girl Utena is fine as long as I know what the stakes are and why people are doing stuff but...

I guess what I'm saying is Penguindrum might not be a great recommendation for people unless you like the concept of not being able to understand what you are watching in the least. If you do, it is for you.

Edit: I feel bad about raining on someone else's recommendation without putting one of my own up for scrutiny so in the same vein of really insane anime that will make you mouth the word 'what?' silently to yourself over and over I submit to you Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita (Humanity has Declined). A story about a world where humanity has... well... declined. They're almost gone. In their place is the new ruler of the world: little fairy folks! The fairies are apparently all-powerful, with the ability to bend reality to their choosing... too bad they're too lazy and airheaded to do anything but make life crazy for everyone. Our main character is a mediator between the remaining humans and the fairies, though she seems just as confused by their actions as everyone else.

Here's the opening and a few scenes that sets the tone for the series:
